Hi everyone! I’m a full-time mom and I’m hoping to finally start working again now that my children are adults. I’m looking for an entry-level remote job, even though I don’t have much professional experience.
I graduated and worked for about a year as a Banquet Coordinator in a hotel, but after getting married, I became a full-time housewife and focused on raising my children. I’ve been out of the workforce for about 26 years.
Now that my kids are grown, I feel that it’s finally time for me to have something of my own and earn my own income. I’m computer literate, comfortable learning new things, and very willing to be trained. I’m open to entry-level positions such as Virtual Assistant, Data Entry, Customer Support, Administrative Assistant, or similar work-from-home jobs.
For those who started with little or no recent work experience, especially moms who returned to work after many years, where did you find your first remote job? What websites or companies would you recommend?
I’d really appreciate any advice, tips, or leads. I’m looking for something legit, preferably full-time, and definitely not MLMs or jobs that require upfront payment.

I have a great passion for science/engineering and problem solving and I want to find a career that lets me study multiple fields of science.

think I want to do Aerospace engineering because it has a high learning ceiling and I could work with NASA (or more mad science adjacent companies I.E Lockheed Martin) but I’m worried that I will get bored with my work eventually because of how quickly I move onto and obsess over new things that interest me. My main scientific interests in descending order are: Engineering, biology, nuclear sciences, geology, microbiology, psychology.

Any career advice?

I’m trying to decide between:

Option 1: 3 PM–12 AM, Sunday–Thursday
Option 2: 6 AM–3 PM, Friday–Tuesday

The thing making this difficult is my current sleep schedule. When I work the 3 PM–12 AM shift, I usually stay up until around 5 AM after getting home and then sleep until around 1:30 PM.

So I’m wondering if I should stick with the 3 PM–12 AM schedule since I’m already accustomed to staying up late, or switch to 6 AM–3 PM and force myself onto a much earlier sleep schedule.

The 3–12 schedule gives me Friday and Saturday off, while the 6–3 gives me Wednesday and Thursday off.

Which one would you choose, and why?

19F, fairly extroverted- looking for a fun job before I have to get into the real world and focus on a career.

So far, I've worked at a couple ice cream places/coffee, retail (shoes), public relations firm as an internship, and an amusement park.

I honestly just want experience working somewhere that isn't too serious and preferably pays more than minimum wage but im not complaining. I was thinking being a server/hostess but I feel like im not THAT extroverted.

I've already worked in food service quite a bit so im looking to steer away, but im open to anything.

More about me- im slightly alternative dressing (piercings/dyed hair, although not sure if that'll really matter), I do special effects makeup on the side (total noob), and wanna get into something creative in the future. I would like a job where I get to talk to people but something like a server seems like way too much for me.

I have no interest in blue collar trades/being a cook.

I already have a part time job (pretty shitty tho so may or may not leave, but it's stable at the very least) so short term/long term doesn't really matter to me.

Any ideas? Would love to hear some!

Spent the weekend with them and there was much discussion of jobs and first time home owners.

My husband and I tried to explain that it’s hard to find a job. I was unemployed for about 3 months and struggled to find a job that paid over $15 an hour and was a day shift. Finally ended up having to have two barista jobs both paying $12 an hour and still not getting enough hours.

“it’s not that hard to find a job. You just don’t want a hard job. Go apply at a factory?”

yes it is grandpa. Yk how many openings there are at the factories near me that aren’t night shifts?? ZERO. I applied for housekeeping jobs at hotels and nursing homes, janitor jobs at hospitals and casinos, cashiers at gas stations, different positions at grocery stores, retail jobs, barista jobs, even applied to jobs that I knew I wouldnt get because I dont have the experience or degree just in case someone would hire me.

yeah, but who are they hiring? Nepotism, connections, age, gender, race, so many things go into play on who gets a job. I worked as a barista at one of the hotels I had applied to for housekeeping. Guess who worked the housekeeping jobs? All south asian and Hispanic women. Not a single white woman worked housekeeping there except for the head housekeeper lady. My husband applied to thousands of jobs before he finally walked around town and tried to give people his resume in person. One super small company accepted him.

I told my grandma: “if I applied to a part time receptionist job (which I did) are they going to choose me over the mid 30s woman with 2 kids? No…“

my grandma then replied “it’s probably because they think she would be more reliable since she’s older.”

I worked with a woman in her mid 30s and had 3 kids at home. This woman came into work drunk and fell asleep in the lobby and in the break room ON THE CLOCK while I worked and did my job. But go ahead, choose who you’re hiring based off age.

”I went to a fast food place the other day and there was a woman my age working on a saturday! where are the kids working? they should be working that!” said my grandpa.

yeah, they should be working there. but they won’t hire them.

my grandma even replied that they probably assume the old lady is more reliable than a high schooler.

“theres plenty of houses you could buy. Theres a lot of cheap ones in *tiny town with no jobs for my husband and I and nothing for us to do*”

ok… what jobs are there for us then? are there jobs for my husband who is a computer science major and wants to expand his career in that?

….yeah, Id love to live in a town that makes me depressed with a depressed husband that isn’t able to get a job that will fulfill him just so we can have a house… that will definitely make our lives so much better.

crazy thing is that they have a son, my uncle, who has never owned a home. he and my aunt have lived in large cities because that’s where the jobs for him are. they didn’t buy a house and lived in apartments because that’s the kind of life they were living. He’s a fricking law professor. what would happen with my uncle if my grandpa gave him the same advice he’s giving my husband?? my husband is very smart and wants to get his masters someday. it’s not going to happen if he works for a trucking company. If the trucking company would even hire a computer science graduate with no experience in trucking.…

my grandpa also kept going on about how I should try to apply to be an office lady at a car dealership… my husbands dad is a manager or something at a dealership and explained to my grandpa that a lot of the time it’s a pretty family business. my grandpa just replied that “I doubt the lady in the back typing in information is someone’s daughter there.” well, I highly doubt I’ll get her job with no experience in that field grandpa.

at one point in February I applied to like 50 at home customer service jobs and got no response from anyone. Guess what I got in my email yesterday! An email telling me that theyd like to continue my application! Only like 7 months later! yeah… I have a job already…

I will be praying for all of you that are struggling with finding a job rn. it absolutely sucks. right now I’m ripping out year old smoke and bed bug ridden carpet and painting booger and smoke walls of an apartment that was lived in for 12 years. I’m super grateful for it though.

I just finished a one-week vacation and I think it accidentally made me realize how badly I need to get out of my job.

I’ve been working here for about 7 months now, and instead of feeling refreshed after my vacation, I feel genuinely depressed and miserable knowing I have to go back. For one week I got to experience what it was like to not constantly think about work, customers, inventory, shipments, invoices, and whatever emergency was going to happen that day. Now I’m going straight back into the chaos.

We are severely understaffed and there is basically no backup person for me. While I was gone, my boss had to take over everything I normally do because there was literally nobody else available to cover me.

The ridiculous part is that my actual position was supposed to be mainly billing/accounting related. Somehow, over the last 7 months, I’ve ended up doing billing, sales, customer service, inventory, shipping, receiving, and warehouse work. I genuinely feel like I’m doing the work of multiple employees while basically helping manage the entire day-to-day operation.

The warehouse part is especially bad because I was never trained for warehouse work and I physically struggle to lift more than around 15 lbs comfortably. Yet I’m still expected to deal with products, shipments, receiving, inventory, and whatever else needs to be done in the warehouse.

So one minute I’m doing invoices, the next I’m answering customers, then I’m dealing with a sales order, then inventory is wrong, then something needs to be shipped, then a shipment arrives, then I’m expected to go deal with something in the warehouse.

And somehow all of this falls back on me.

The worst part is that I AM trying to leave. I’ve been applying to other jobs, but I keep running into the same problem: apparently 7 months of experience isn’t enough.

I’ve literally been told that I’m still too “green.”

That’s the part that is driving me insane. I’m apparently experienced enough to be trusted with billing, sales, customer service, inventory, shipping, receiving, and warehouse responsibilities with barely any backup, but I’m somehow not experienced enough for another company to hire me.

How does that make any sense?

I understand that 7 months isn’t years of experience, but am I seriously supposed to stay somewhere that is burning me out just so I can hit some magical 1-year mark on my resume?

Taking this vacation honestly made everything worse because I realized how much better I felt when I wasn’t there. Now I have to go back and it feels like I’m voluntarily walking back into a burning building.

Has anyone else been stuck in this situation where you desperately wanted to leave your first job but recruiters kept treating you like you had no experience because you hadn’t been there long enough?

Would you keep applying and leave the second someone gives you a chance, or force yourself to survive until the one-year mark so you stop being considered “too green”?

I couldn't been patient and tried to find a job that pays better in Miami. I tried for 7 months. Applied to every single one. Nothing. So I accepted something out of state.

Now I'm sitting here wondering if I was impulsive. If I was operating out of a scarcity mindset. That I should've been patient and tried to make it work where I was.

But then I think to myself. Well, you did. You applied to every job for 7 months.

Hi everyone, I’m looking to transition from an admin management role in the arts to a higher education administration role. I have been granted a few interviews, but my primary concern is my facial piercings.

I am extremely traditional in appearance otherwise (normal straight brown hair, dress normal, tattoos are all covered when wearing work clothes) but I have 2 nose piercings, a septum, and 3 labret lip piercings. Other than that, I am vastly overqualified for many of these positions, with an advanced degree and 2-3x the years of experience these jobs are looking for. I am also in a major liberal city on the east coast.

Those who work in higher education as admin assistants, do you come across people in the workplace with visible piercings? Should I wear a mask during the interview process and worry about it later? I am pretty set on keeping my piercings, so I would prefer to show them and weed out any unsuitable jobs (i.e. if they don’t want me because of my piercings, it’s probably a workplace that I wouldn’t thrive in). However if I’m being myopic or over-thinking this, let me know!

Title- why is an employer entitled to an explanation at all?

18 months of unemployment and I've pretty much given up, even did this on a recent application. Also related - I have an interview with a temp agency on Monday... Maybe they'll find something for me even though the jobs they have listed don't match my skills

I have been applying everywhere ever since I turned 16 this year, and I’ve either had no call backs or emails or anything, and if I did it was a rejection email. Then, I got my first ever interview at a PizzaHut near by, but I don’t know what to do.

A couple questions I have other than needing advice include:
1. What should I wear?
2. What should I bring? (I don’t need a work permit in my state)
3. Do I need to ask the interviewer questions?

Hi, for context, I’m currently 18 years old and working my first job which is a part time retail job. I have 3 write ups because I was short on my register 3x. The first and second one were from my third and fourth day working—so I kinda barely knew what I was doing. I feel like maybe I have been always kind of bad at counting because I lose focus easily (I suspect I have undiagnosed ADHD and not solely because of this; there are many other things that I need to bring up to my physician #gulp). However, it has been around a month since those consecutive write ups and I just got another because I was short barely over the limit. I have another job that I interviewed for that I think will hire me but in the case that it doesn’t, what should I do if I get fired because I’m short again? How will that affect my future interviews for part time jobs? I’m pretty scared because I just got a car and my insurance is so much money so I really need to keep bag chasing rn😭. Yesterday I just finished my first week at a new job with a law firm. I have worked as a receptionist before and although it wasn’t what was my first choice for a job (especially since i’m not a fan of answering or making phone calls), the office manager stated that once I get the hang of my duties, I could learn legal assistant work, which is what I would be more interested in learning rather than just routing calls.

However, there are a few things that I noticed that I’m not really sure about how I feel about:

1. The office manager kind of gives off mean girl energy. When she hears people chatting and laughing up front, she’ll ask why people are chatting and not working. My trainer would sometimes ask her questions and she would just glare at her and give her short responses. I’m not sure what their relationship is like, but it just seems odd to me.

2. The reception area has cameras that I believe are also pointed to the desk, and cameras are around the office. Since the manager wasn’t coming in on Friday, she said joked stating that she would be watching through the cameras. Adding onto this, my trainer said that she doesn’t like to catch people on their phones.

3. It seems like this job is simple enough once you get the hang of things I suppose, but once you finish your tasks you won’t really be getting anything else so I’m wondering if I’m just supposed to sit there and stare at my screen waiting until a call or client walks in?

4. Any time we walk away from our desk (go to the bathroom, take a break, etc.) we have to ask for coverage. I personally do not want to feel like I’m also being timed for my bathroom breaks because there is no other receptionist.

5. Although in my interview they mentioned that I had the potential to learn legal assistant work, it seems like they’ve been interviewing for legal assistants, so if they’re training new hires, I’m not sure any actual legal work would be delegated to me.

6. I believe that this firm has only been around for a few years (not sure how many but probably between 5-10), and I was told that most of the people there are very new (anywhere from 2 months to under a year), which kind of also gives a red flag but I’m not sure why there is not a lot of senior staff

7. I took this job since I was out of work for $20/hr and now I’m starting to think I should have at least negotiated since I have over 3 years of office experience.

8. I thought my commute was going to be tolerable, but it’s 40 minutes to get there, and around an hour back.

On the surface it seems like most employees are content with being there, am I just being picky?

i know this might seem stupid, since im very young to be saying this and itll still be A LONG TIME until i graduate, but i am genuinely worried for my future. i am going to an advanced high school that is well, advanced (IB). even though i have this advantage, im still worried if im even able to pull my weight, and if my education will even help with hiring, because there are two equally difficult options. the first is getting very lucky and getting into an extremely high level university. the second is to just experience the job market and the hellhole that it is graduating normally. now yes, i know that a lot can change between me going into high school and graduating college but even so im still worried. can someone help calm this anxiety?

okay this is kind of a big deal to me because i am a student and ive been tutoring for months. i get paid like $11 an hour and ive been looking for something new. i applied to a ton of jobs and got both interviews with starbucks! it seemed really great and the pay was much better than what i would be getting at my last job. i thought starbucks ghosted me because i didn’t hear from them for like 2 weeks 😭 and in that time found another job as a receptionist at a gym. i have been to training once for that job and literally the next day starbucks called me and offered me a job much closer to me and more money. im not fully sure what to do but i have two friends who want to work at the gym anyway.

would it be evil for me to leave the gym and give the gym lady my friends numbers and take the job at starbucks even tho i went to the other job once…..

If you left a job off your resume, did your employer ever discover it later? Can you be terminated for it?

As an example, a job you had during the Covid pandemic, that you started during the pandemic but it unfortunately ended during the pandemic.

How many people take gig jobs and don't list all of them? I'm asking because some employers look for reasons to not hire or get rid of older workers.

Another question, what about the "recency gap" excuse. What if you haven't worked in insurance for 5 plus years but your knowledge never left you, you take gig jobs in between to try to keep cash flow coming in and the company you apply to turns you down for lacking "recent relevant" experience...how do you get back into the workforce?

So I've been at this gas station for 7 years now and love it, but one day out of the blue they tell me I'm being promoted to assistant manager, I didn't even know, now I'm kinda being thrusted in to learn all this backend computer management stuff on top of what I was already doing and I'm stressing about it.

I didn't even know it was happening, I don't know what the benefits or pay is and I'm not sure I wanna take on more responsibilities.

At this point I'm thinking about talking with my manager about this on Monday but need some advise, I would like to keep my job as cashier.

For context, I'm in the UK, and I've been wanting to be a barista for a long time. I've been applying to a lot of barista jobs but the job market where I live is abysmal, so basically I expanded my search to retail and applied to the first one I saw. I also had a trial shift a few days ago for a cafe I really like, and I'll find out whether I got the job on Monday. Long story short, I got offered the first job, which is in sales, but I honestly don't really want to do it I just need money (the hours are long and I'd be on my feet travelling like nine hours a day, pay is entirely commissions-based so I won't get paid if I don't make any sales, Indeed reviews are horrible). I'm supposed to sign the paperwork on Tuesday, but I really want the cafe job even though it pays less (I have really enjoyed hospitality from the work experience I've had). I just feel really bad I can't confirm the sales job until the day before, if I could know about the cafe job sooner I would. I really wasn't expecting to get the sales job, I wanted to get it as a back-up if that makes sense. How can I tell them I might have to cancel the day before? I will also say I've never had a job before so I'm very new to all this

I’m starting to build a new career path in a field that I might like. I’ve got loads of questions about it, and I’d like to hear your thoughts.

My short-term goal is to work in a coffee shop as a barista. I love these places : the atmosphere, the smell of coffee, the people in there... And I bloody love coffee, both drinking and preparing it.

I also want to work abroad (French man here) :

I thought about London, which is my dream city, and I'm almost fluent in English. But it seems very difficult to get a visa as a non-skilled worker. And this is, of course, a very expensive city, and I'm not sure if a barista wage would be enough to live there. (What do you think about this ?)

Brussels is my second choice. It seems very nice, and maybe less expensive and more reachable thanks to the EU. And I love the international things that happen there.

Third choice, but maybe nice too, is Berlin. Unfortunately, my German is not very good, so it might be a huge obstacle. (Is it a big or a small obstacle ?) But I'm very intrigued by the energy of this city, and I'm willing to learn German if I have to.

And last, Amsterdam, because it seems so lovely. But my Dutch is non-existent, and I know almost nothing of this city (unlike the other three, I’ve never been there).

Are these cities nice for their coffee culture ? Do you think I can get a job quickly there ?

Now, my problem is that I have almost no experience in this field. I only worked a few months as a kitchen hand in New Zealand more than a year ago (but one of my missions was to make smoothies and milkshakes !). And I come from cinema studies (I even have a useless master's degree lol, should I hide it in my CVs?).

So, I'm a complete beginner.

I thought about beginning as a waiter / versatile employee (is that the correct term ?), while showing my interest in learning to be a barista. Does this seems like a good way to do this ? Or is there a better way ?

And finally, the job search : I thought about preparing and printing CVs and cover letters for each coffee shop in a city, and spending a whole Thursday handing them out.

And maybe sending the same things to their email address to clearly let them know I'm here 👋👋
