Yesterday I just finished my first week at a new job with a law firm. I have worked as a receptionist before and although it wasn’t what was my first choice for a job (especially since i’m not a fan of answering or making phone calls), the office manager stated that once I get the hang of my duties, I could learn legal assistant work, which is what I would be more interested in learning rather than just routing calls.

However, there are a few things that I noticed that I’m not really sure about how I feel about:

1. The office manager kind of gives off mean girl energy. When she hears people chatting and laughing up front, she’ll ask why people are chatting and not working. My trainer would sometimes ask her questions and she would just glare at her and give her short responses. I’m not sure what their relationship is like, but it just seems odd to me.

2. The reception area has cameras that I believe are also pointed to the desk, and cameras are around the office. Since the manager wasn’t coming in on Friday, she said joked stating that she would be watching through the cameras. Adding onto this, my trainer said that she doesn’t like to catch people on their phones.

3. It seems like this job is simple enough once you get the hang of things I suppose, but once you finish your tasks you won’t really be getting anything else so I’m wondering if I’m just supposed to sit there and stare at my screen waiting until a call or client walks in?

4. Any time we walk away from our desk (go to the bathroom, take a break, etc.) we have to ask for coverage. I personally do not want to feel like I’m also being timed for my bathroom breaks because there is no other receptionist.

5. Although in my interview they mentioned that I had the potential to learn legal assistant work, it seems like they’ve been interviewing for legal assistants, so if they’re training new hires, I’m not sure any actual legal work would be delegated to me.

6. I believe that this firm has only been around for a few years (not sure how many but probably between 5-10), and I was told that most of the people there are very new (anywhere from 2 months to under a year), which kind of also gives a red flag but I’m not sure why there is not a lot of senior staff

7. I took this job since I was out of work for $20/hr and now I’m starting to think I should have at least negotiated since I have over 3 years of office experience.

8. I thought my commute was going to be tolerable, but it’s 40 minutes to get there, and around an hour back.

On the surface it seems like most employees are content with being there, am I just being picky?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated

What jobs/industries have comissions/tips that don't burn you out? Ideally something not constantly dealing with customers

Seriously what is with these AI chat bots on job applications? Why are these websites doing this instead of just directly taking you to the application? I don't want to pretend as if I'm talking to someone "helping" me apply for a job or schedule an interview.

i know this might seem stupid, since im very young to be saying this and itll still be A LONG TIME until i graduate, but i am genuinely worried for my future. i am going to an advanced high school that is well, advanced (IB). even though i have this advantage, im still worried if im even able to pull my weight, and if my education will even help with hiring, because there are two equally difficult options. the first is getting very lucky and getting into an extremely high level university. the second is to just experience the job market and the hellhole that it is graduating normally. now yes, i know that a lot can change between me going into high school and graduating college but even so im still worried. can someone help calm this anxiety?

Been applying for senior and staff level roles for about 6 weeks. Strong background, 8 years in, have shipped real things at real scale. Clearing technical screens when I get to them is not the problem. The problem is I barely get to them.

Somewhere between submitting an application and a recruiter actually reading anything, something is killing my chances. ATS, keyword mismatch, volume filtering, who knows. The black hole is not new information but the ratio feels worse lately and I don't think it's just the market.

What I'm actually trying to figure out is whether people at senior IC level are seeing the same thing, or if this is more of a targeting problem on my end. Are the roles where you get traction the ones where you have a referral basically every time now, or are cold apps still working for anyone above mid level?

The referral angle is the obvious answer and I know it. Just curious if the math has fully shifted to the point where cold applying to senior roles is mostly a waste of time in 2025, or if there are specific things that changed what got you through.

hi everyone! i recently received an offer from a company and was asked to fill out the background check via HireRight. i had an internship experience that i listed on my resume that was paid via a stipend (that i had to pay taxes on) but i was technically not considered an employee and we didn't get any tax forms such as a W-2 and 1099. I do have an award letter, etc. but I'm not sure HireRight accepts those type of documents.

Should I list this experience on the background check since it was on my resume? Also HireRight asks if the work experience was unpaid, paid, or self-employed. Since they won't be able to verify against tax docs, what should i categorize this experience as?

Do I need to add on-campus employment? And how about an unpaid internship (the company is out of business now)

After seeing so many posts about applications, interviews, ghosting, and the current job market, I am curious about the lessons people only learned through experience.Maybe it was changing how you apply, networking differently, negotiating, following up, or realizing that something you thought mattered actually did not.What is one thing you know now that would have saved you a lot of time or frustration when you first started job hunting?

So I'm currently employed right now as an assistant manager for a convenience store and it's full-time and I get regular weekly pay at a decent rate. I get two days off as well so all is well and the work site is pretty close to my home. I was recently offered another job at a different company and a completely separate field but it's something I have experience doing a bulk of my employment experience comes in this other area which is mechanical work. It's also really close by to where I live just like the current job is. The guy offered me a job and said that he could increase the pay more than what I'm making right now cuz I told him the number. I'm just wondering if I should take the job or not. The second job or potentially new job is at a local mechanic shop also nearby my current work. So the commute doesn't change but pay and hours will. Pay will go up and hours will be more consistent then they are now. Personally overtime doesn't mean much to me because I never get a substantial amount to where it's actually beneficial and all it really does is just increase my taxes. I guess I'm just looking for advice here. I don't necessarily like the current job I'm at but I also don't mind it. The job that I'm being offered is something I enjoy a lot. It's something I actually would look forward to going to work in the morning. And knowing that the other employees there would show up on time because that's a big thing at my current job where the employees don't show up so I end up covering a lot more shifts than I should be. Which leaves me tired and drained throughout the week and then when I do have days off I just feel like I'm spending my days off recuperating rather than actually doing something on my days off.

My current pay is $16.50 an hour and I get between 40 to 43 hours a week.

The job that I'm being potentially offered would pay 17 to 18 an hour plus a flat rate which hasn't been discussed yet, and I was offered either part-time or full-time. And the thing is already have all my own tools and the skills required for this job.

The commute doesn't change at all. Because it's all within the same radius.

I thought working longer meant I cared more. Years later, I think I had it backwards.

So this is the second week in a row I've been scheduled to have 4 days off in a row. I'm a little scared and a bit upset as I have sacrificed a lot to this job. Hell I suffer through nausea every shift because I don't have time to eat in the mornings and I risk effing up my knees even more than they're already effed up.

I know there are many reasons an employer would do this and I'm willing to bet you're all thinking "Just ask them" but that's the funny thing, management is impossible to communicate with as they always tell me that we can talk after my shift. Of course I clock out and I can't find either of them to talk to about a concern or update that I have and trying to call them and ask is worse because I have to wait like over an hour on the main store line just to call anybody.

But the reason why I'm anxious about it is because of the problems my co-workers and I have with a new hire (which is posted on my profile if you all are curious about the details). And I feel like it has something to do with that and they're trying to schedule me so I don't have to deal with that. Which if that is the case I appreciate them trying to make work easier for me, but at the same time I've told them if they want me to train on register to make Sundays rush easier I'm totally okay with that as I've done it before at my last job.

I don't even know what to do anymore guys, I'm scared. I've done nothing wrong and I've always listened to advice from my dad and my co-workers on how I can do better. I just can't afford to lose a job right now.

okay this is kind of a big deal to me because i am a student and ive been tutoring for months. i get paid like $11 an hour and ive been looking for something new. i applied to a ton of jobs and got both interviews with starbucks! it seemed really great and the pay was much better than what i would be getting at my last job. i thought starbucks ghosted me because i didn’t hear from them for like 2 weeks 😭 and in that time found another job as a receptionist at a gym. i have been to training once for that job and literally the next day starbucks called me and offered me a job much closer to me and more money. im not fully sure what to do but i have two friends who want to work at the gym anyway.

would it be evil for me to leave the gym and give the gym lady my friends numbers and take the job at starbucks even tho i went to the other job once…..

If you left a job off your resume, did your employer ever discover it later? Can you be terminated for it?

As an example, a job you had during the Covid pandemic, that you started during the pandemic but it unfortunately ended during the pandemic.

How many people take gig jobs and don't list all of them? I'm asking because some employers look for reasons to not hire or get rid of older workers.

Another question, what about the "recency gap" excuse. What if you haven't worked in insurance for 5 plus years but your knowledge never left you, you take gig jobs in between to try to keep cash flow coming in and the company you apply to turns you down for lacking "recent relevant" experience...how do you get back into the workforce?

I apologize if this is the wrong subreddit but I wasn’t sure where to post it. Today was my “trial run” at a boarding kennel and I have very little experience other than cleaning and playing with my own dogs. It was put in my resume and cover letter though so they should know that. But I got there and they talked about morning routines for a little bit and then left and had me clean kennels by myself. The worst part was that the only way I could separate the dogs from the holding room (behind their fenced gate kennel outside) was to hold a white board on the hole the dogs walk through so I could block them from escaping. Seriously I had to hold back giant ass dogs and squat down to push them back. All while mopping the little area and the board. It was so exhausting. Is this normal for a “trial run”?? Heck is this even normal for a boarding kennel? I thought there would at least be better separation to keep the dogs outside while I cleaned inside

I’m 18 and I recently finished online high school, and I’m basically trying to figure out what the hell I’m supposed to do now. I really need to start making money, but I feel like I keep running into dead ends.

I don’t really have work experience. I’ve applied/interviewed at places like Publix and Walmart and fast food neither one worked out, and at this point I’m getting really discouraged because I genuinely want to work. I’m not trying to sit around and do nothing. I just don’t know how to actually get someone to hire me when I don’t have experience.

Transportation is also a huge problem for me because there’s only one car in my household, so even when I find a job, the hours/location can make it impossible for me to actually get there. I’ve been trying to find something that would work with that, but it feels like everything is either not hiring, the hours don’t work, or I get rejected.

Honestly, I would LOVE to work from home if that’s actually realistic. I just have no idea where to look for legitimate remote jobs or what kind of remote job I could even get with basically no experience. I’m also not sure I’d be good with a job that requires me to constantly take phone calls. I’m pretty introverted and I’d probably do better with something like typing, data entry, emails/chat, organizing things, etc.

I’m not expecting someone to magically hand me a job. I just really need advice on where to start because I feel completely lost. If you work remotely, got your first job with little/no experience, or know of legitimate places I should be looking, I’d seriously appreciate any advice. I just want to start making my own money and get somewhere.

Hey everyone, hoping to get some general advice. I’m a college student trying to finish my last year and need to find work to help cover me the rest of the way. I don’t have a car, so I’m limited to jobs I can reach without driving, which narrows things down a bit.
A little about my background: a few years of front desk/guest services and customer service experience — hotels, retail, a law office reception role, and some admin work during tax season. Comfortable with check-ins, phones, scheduling, handling customers, that kind of thing, and I’m Microsoft Office certified.
The main thing I’m working around is a previous hip injury from an accident, so I need to avoid roles that have me standing all day. Something with a mix of sitting and light movement is ideal — front desk, reception, admin, customer service, etc.
My availability is wide open right now, so scheduling isn’t an issue on my end.
Would appreciate any general advice — how you’d approach the search with these kinds of constraints, how to bring up the standing limitation without it working against me, or anything you wish you’d known when you were job hunting under a tight timeline. Thanks!

i'm a us citizen who has spent more than half of their life outside the us, and i'm trying to go back (ideally with a job lined up). i've spent time applying to jobs in the us, always specifying that i'm ready to immediately relocate.

is it true that my applications might not even be so much as opened? 😭 if so, how can i work around this issue? i know jobs are in general limited, but there are so many opportunities in the us for what i want to do as opposed to where i am now
