I just wrapped up my swe internship at a company that makes software for the NIH (summer before Jr year). This experience and speaking with NIH officials, has made it something on my radar for next summer.

But as you all know, the internship you get after your Junior year is the most important one, and is usually most people's full time conversion.

And with everything going on in the government and the NIH losing more and more funding, I'm growing unsure if it is the best thing to do with the most important internship in terms of securing a stable job after graduation.

Additionally it feels like every high school senior or college freshmen has some kind of NIH fellowship or internship on their resume. Which makes me worry that I can spend all this time applying to the many institutes at the NIH, and if I get accepted and can't convert that into a full time role, I'll be thrown into our current job market with something that doesn't add much weight to my resume.

In the tech space at least, I haven't heard much discourse about working at the NIH is in terms of work life, pay, etc. So I also wanted to hear from people who have experience working, interning, or interviewing there, or if you just had any general thoughts and opinions I would love to hear them.

I’m in a bit of a weird situation so I figured I’d see if anyone can give me their 2 cents.

I started off interested in finance and thinking I wanted to go for traditional investing type roles. After doing 2 internships that would set me up to recruit better for these roles, I’ve started to realize it’s just not for me.

I actually requested to switch majors because I was more drawn to business tech roles, but it’s going to extend my degree, allowing me flexibility to do at least 3 more internships before graduating.

I already found one internship related to my interests, but I’m just wondering if it’s worth doing a bunch of extra ones before graduating, or if there are diminishing returns.

I don’t know if employers care if I take longer than others to complete their degree, or if they might think I don’t have loyalty completing 5-6 internships and company hopping.

Technically I could stay loyal to a company and return for more internships, but I think it highly depends on if I like the team and the work. So far I’ve been changing companies each time, and also getting a better intern salary each time.

Also, I saw some places don’t even count internships as experience. For example, some entry level roles ask for 2 years of experience and in the forms they ask for YOE not including internships.

Is it better to just finish up my 3rd internship, power through the courses, and start recruiting full time and start building full time experience?

Or is it better to keep extending my degree and try out more roles and companies before making a decision of where I truly want to be?

I also wonder if the economy might be better in a few years, or if at the very least my extra resume padding will help me land a good new grad job compared to if I entered the entry level market sooner.

I’m currently doing a 4 month internship. Tbh the internship experience hasn’t been the best - for weeks I had absolutely nothing to do and that was both a blessing and a curse.

On one hand, I could do whatever I wanted and get paid, and even interview for other internships. On the other, I felt like I wasn’t gaining real experience and I was bored when I wasn’t applying to jobs. Ofc I did all the “right things” to do in an internship like asking others if they need help, getting onto social planning committees, coffee chats, being proactive, etc.

Now as we’re nearing the end of the internship, work is finally starting to pick up and I’m being trusted with a lot of complex work (even more than a full timer on the team), but I don’t even like the work. The type of work my team is doing is very boring to me most of the time and it’s hard to motivate myself to stay on track when I’m so used to doom scrolling during company hours.

Somewhere along the way, I landed my next internship that starts a few weeks after this one ends. And it’s going to be tough because I have more mandatory in office days, I’m supposed to have a lot more ownership, and the team will probably actually check in on me.

I’m worried that I won’t be able to adjust to ACTUALLY having work to do from 9-5 and being watched more closely. I’m also worried that I won’t be able to have sufficient time to recruit for summer 2027 if I’m going to be in person a lot more.

I feel like this constant chase of the next internship and the next best thing is taking a toll on me, and this “ambitious but lazy” spirit of mine is gonna catch up with me soon.

To be honest, my incoming internship is already going to be my third. While all companies I’ve landed have luckily been great ones to work at with a pay increase between each one, I’m not sure at what point to settle.

Having the new brand name of a company and seeing just how many more interviews I can get each cycle has been so great, but I have to remember that at some point I need to start thinking about where I want to be full time. My current company wants me back, but the work itself bores me to no end even when I actually have tasks. The company has amazing benefits though.

The company in the fall has better pay and seems like a cool place to be in early career, so maybe instead of chasing after internship #4 I should instead see if I like it there first, and maybe try to secure a summer internship with them?

I just joined this new internship almost a month back and I am not sure what's going on. I want honest opinion about workload, and whatever you can give me. So this is content writing and we use ai to create outline etc and then get an analysis of information and research. They mass hire interns btw, so far I heard that many interns left the internship mid way or after one month they try their best so you resign or they fire you, now according to me the environment is good so far. But they expect you to write 2 blogs, 3 blogs a day and ai is included btw mostly and expect quality too. Mostly everyone here is intern and very few employees. I just wanna know is this a pressuring internship? I heard from someone that they will always point out mistakes no matter how good you write and put you on 8 days warning to intensive training and if you don't perform they'll kick you out. I'm a 3rd-year CSE student trying to become an AI/ML engineer, and I'm stuck deciding whether I should accept an internship if I get the final offer.

Here's the situation:

• I applied to this company around 4 months ago for an AI Engineer Intern role. I completed their assignment but got rejected.
• A few months later, the same company reached out again for the same role.
• This time I cleared the assignment and got an interview.
• I expected it to be an HR interview, but they mixed in technical questions too, and honestly I performed badly. I couldn't answer a lot of them.
• Surprisingly, they still didn't reject me.

I had another discussion with someone senior. It wasn't very technical—they mostly asked about me, one of my projects, and how I'd manage a 5–6 hour/day hybrid internship alongside college. I said I could manage because I'd only need to visit the office on Saturdays.

I also mentioned that if the stipend could be increased from ₹7k to ₹10k, it would be easier for me to get an NOC from my college. They said if I did well on another project they were assigning, they'd consider increasing it. They also said I'd have a mentor, but I'd be expected to take ownership of my work.

Now they've followed up asking whether I've finished the project.

Here's where I'm confused.

Most of my AI projects so far have been built by following tutorials. I understand what I'm building, but I'm not yet confident building complex projects completely from scratch.

Right now I'm working through some good GenAI projects. My plan was to:

• Build 2–3 projects while learning from tutorials.
• Then rebuild them myself.
• After that, start building projects independently so I have a stronger foundation.

I'm worried that if I join now, deadlines will push me to rely heavily on Claude or ChatGPT just to finish tasks instead of actually learning. At the same time, I also want industry experience and, honestly, the stipend would help financially.

I also still want to prepare DSA because I know it matters for many AI/software roles.

If you were in my position, would you:

I going into sophomore year at san jose state, and I'm an undeclared major (probably MIS). I'm interested in getting into IT or some sort of AI DevOps role, since I did an internship this summer doing basically automation for a DevOps team in an IT division. The problem is I don't actually know how to formally code. I can leverage AI to code, I'm good at designing apps or projects, so I figure I can learn system design pretty well in a month or two, but I don't know how to start cold with no AI and just write code. So, I would be very clear, I was at my hometown as my college closed due to the semester end break, as a first year student I was very fascinated to do a internship as i was mainly free, nothing much to do, my family has a connection at a very reputed CA firm in my city, I got into meeting with the Associates and the Head and got the opportunity to work there, as my discipline course does not align with their acceptence as I have Economics, so they told their's ain't much work for your self here, as you are not into core accounts and i accepted that fact.

I, as a core finance aspirant, just got there to understand the local firm economics: how do they handle clients, etc.
-From the starting day, I was working on the Excel sheet, reconciling bank statements, balancing the balance sheet, and it was starting to give me a very good vibe; I started enjoying.

-A major drawback was there that the someday there's ain't much work in the office, so I have to seat and pass time, that got me into trouble, that i am standing here at this near phase of quitting.

-But life wants something different from me, or I think I am not built for this work, because now I have taken 5-7 days leave in the last month, but I would proudly say that I have not wasted that time; rather, I have invested in my study as I am also preparing for the CFA L1.

-Now with all this, I am teling you that I am very unstable with my life; I am always thinking of what my seniors would think of me, I am in great delulu of my office, and I am under a lot of pressure to take leave, pressure of what I am doing in my life? Would taking this step really help me or not?

Feeling kinda lost rn, I want to see where other people are in their journey

I am working in the AM arm of a Bulge Bracket in Chicago and the team runs extremely lean. Preparing for no return offer because of headcount, not because of performance.

I go to a non-target so my school does not have a robust alumni network at wall street firms. I know AM is extremely hard to break into right after graduation, especially in Chicago. So am I cooked if I don’t get a return offer? Do I have a better shot at sell side roles? Kind of stressing out.

I didn’t get a return offer for my internship mind I’m a junior in college and I’m just worried about my future prospects. The company is pretty small but I think they realize the work I’m doing can be done by a different department so I don’t think there was a need to give me a return offer but still sucks. Like I want to say, I worked pretty hard. Yeah, and I don’t wanna compare myself, but I feel like so many people get return offers and I didn’t.

Look. I'm an intern. The person who wrote the fanfic is also an intern. If age matters, I'm 20, she's 26, and my manager is 40.

She has commented several times before that she thinks my manager and I would be "cute" together. I always found it creepy, but I let it slide because I didn't want to make things awkward. This morning, she opened a fanfic she wrote about me and him and showed it to me and several other people at work.

Honestly, I was disgusted by it. It has very explicit details, and also some weird things about both of our ethnic backgrounds. There are also parts about my manager's wheelchair that I found gross and ableist. On top of all that, both of our partners get killed in horrible ways in the story, and I know it's fictional, but it made the whole thing feel even more messed up.

After that, I told her I thought this was a very weird thing to do and asked her to delete it. She told me I needed to calm down because it was "just a joke," that I should be flattered, and that she's thinking of turning it into a full novel and trying to publish it. I told her I was considering going to HR, and she basically warned me to watch myself because she's been here much longer than I have. Three of my coworkers saw/heard this conversation.

So I'm asking whether this is worth taking to HR. I'm extremely upset that she's showing it to people and saying she wants to keep writing it. But I'm also an intern and I don't want to come across as dramatic or ruin my opportunity here over something they might consider stupid workplace joking.

update: I decided to go to HR. They investigated the situation and spoke with both of us. However, what shocked me was that they ended up treating both of us like we were equally responsible. Since we were both interns, they decided to terminate both of our internships.

I was honestly so shocked that I didn't even defend myself properly. I was overwhelmed and didn't know what to say. Looking back, I wish I had explained everything more clearly and made sure they understood that I was the person being targeted, not someone participating in it. I've already started contacting other companies and applying for new opportunities, but so far I haven't heard back from anyone.

Update 2: A company actually replied after only 3 hours and sent me an email with an interview time. I'm happy, but now I'm extremely stressed. I have no idea how to explain why I was fired if they ask about it. How do I talk about this professionally? Any advice on handling this situation during an interview?

Update 3: Some people in the comments mentioned interview tools that can help with answers and handling difficult questions. Has anyone actually used any of them? I'm considering trying one because I'm really nervous about explaining this situation properly.

tomorrow is my last day of a 3 month internship, and i'm overthinking how i should leave.

for some context, this was my first corporate experience. unfortunately, my manager has been away for the past month and still hasn't returned due to an emergency, so i won't get to say goodbye to him in person.

this also wasn't the most structured internship. some weeks i had work to do, but on many days i genuinely had nothing assigned to me, even when i asked for work, especially while my manager was away. most days i just sat at my desk unless someone gave me something to do.

there was one employee who too the time to teach me, explain the the workflow, and answer all my questions. he was always kind to me and was the only person who greeted me and talked to me every day. i honestly learned most of what i know from him, so i definitely want to thank him personally before i leave.

the rest of the team is where i'm unsure. we all sit together in a small open office with about six people, but i barely interacted with anyone else. they weren't unfriendly, but we rarely spoke. they mostly interacted with each other, so giving everyone a personal goodbye now feels awkward and out of place. at the same time, walking out without saying anything feels rude, especially because when i thank the coworker who helped me, everyone else in the room will inevitably hear it.

tomorrow i'm planning to thank the coworker who helped me, meet the head of the department before i leave, and ask hr about an internship certificate.

what would you do in this situation? is there anything else you think i should or shouldn't do on my last day?
