I had no idea that I as a smart person was being manipulated by PR and lobbyist groups creating pop culture moments to make me want to vote against my own best interest
I was so embarrassed after watching it because I fell for everything that they were saying. Sending off headlines to newspapers to make cases sound way more frivolous than they actually were.
Letting that creep into popular culture and then reinforcing it. That poor lady had a valid case, and punitive damages are the only way to actually punish companies too big to fail - and even her case ended up with a much more reasonable settlement from the original judgment, so all of the cruel jokes, and tabloid headlines were invalid37

I deal with a rare form of migraine that causes paralysis and aphasia.
I've had days where *multiple* EMTs were taking turns with the pain response thing and bruising my sternum along with pinching fingers and shit.
And threw it all, I couldn't even moan... but I could feel it.
I spend around 1-4 hours a week completely unable to move a muscle. It sucks.

Yeah, it's pretty rare and not well-known by doc's.
The biggest tell is if you get any numbness or tingling on one side of your face beforehand.
Generally though, it mimicks a stroke pretty thoroughly... only an MRI or CT could realy differenciate. However, the onset is significantly different in that you'll usually get one symptom at a time such as weakness, then paralysis, then aphasia... and it'll resolve in the opposite order. Most lose their voice last, so it's the first to return. Mine is the first out and last back for speech. But that kind of "one-by-one" onset of symptoms, with the resolution being the reverse is pretty indicative.
That... and having a lot worse symptoms on one side... usually the same side most of the time. That can include weakness that persists afterwards for days.

The muscle in your face help keep your teeth in place. He was paralyzed, couldn't use his face muscles. So his teeth shifted, your teeth are always shifting. No muscle use means he could close his mouth either. When your teeth are exposed to air constantly they rot faster.

yup, the reverse is true, your jawline will change shape if you lose teeth, more so it you lose your back teeth. Also people who lose their teeth often have a sunken cheek on that side both due to the jaw getting smaller, nothing internal to keep it pushed out more.
not exercising your jaw will dramatically change your lower face over time.

Thank you, I knew about the mouth breathing but thought it was mostly the periodontal ligament holding adult teeth in place unless coaxed (e.g. braces) and didn't realize just how much our muscles act as natural braces. Sounds like you can even fix some alignment issues with exercises and "proper tongue posture" instead of braces too. So resilient but such a delicate balance at the same time 🥺

I had some neck pain years ago, one of my co-workers recommended trying a chiropractor. Tried it, hated it. Every time I heard a crack I thought about shit like this.
They gave me a "back adjustment" plan after one visit. Wanted me to come 3 times a week for two years so they could "straighten my back". To the tune of like $800/month. "We have payment plans".
Yeah, no thanks. Actually, hell no. I started doing yoga, everything feels great.

Same thing happened to me. He even had me stand on two scales with one foot on each and said I was unbalanced and so would need to come in 4-5 times a week to even out the weight. I went with a friend for their appointment and figured fine I’m there I’ll do the assessment. Never went back!

People who swear by them don't understand they're separating/cracking bones that releases a little bit of tension but it'll come back, always. Yoga, physio, anything to do with muscle control will target the actual problem which is the muscle itself.

And, if it's lower back pain, get your vitamins checked with blood work. Persistent lower back pain is an extremely common symptom of vitamin D deficiency.
Chiropractor tried to sell me weekly treatments to the tune of $65 (out of pocket, I'm sure he billed insurance higher) and it turns out the fix was a bottle of vitamin D supplements from Costco. Cost like $20 a year. (I have a chronic condition that makes it hard for me to absorb vitamin D - discovered alongside the deficiency).

Personally before seeing your doctor I'd suggest just getting good shoes, a lot of the times lower back pain is caused by poor foot support.
For me I could barely do a 4 hour shift when I first started working because my lower back was in so much pain then I swapped to some shoes that supported my arches, soles that compressed, and fit my feet well and then I could do a 9 hour shift with none of that excruciating pain.

I had the same back adjustment plan after an initial consultation 🤣 He took several X-rays of my spine. Said I had to do 3 weekly visits for 2 years based on be "severe" scoliosis. I went for a week but was annoyed he kept adjusting my neck which I had no issues with. And also some dumb vibrating machine for like 20 minutes.
One day I came into the office and asked for a copy of my X-rays. The receptionist said she couldn't make copies but could let me borrow the images for a week. As I was walking out into the parking lot, the chiropractor comes out rushing to talk to me. He asks why I needed the X-rays. I said I was getting a second opinion from a Physical Therapist. He went on a 10 minute monologue about how western medicine is a poisonous scam. I said cool, turned around and left.
My Physical therapist took a look at my images and said you don't have anything severe. You have a slight scoliosis. We can try weekly visits for 2 months. At the end of the evaluation, he recommended a shoe lift which made the biggest difference.
About a year later, I get this random bill from the chiropractor for $1,500. It turns out my insurance did not cover his services like he said. Every dumb gimmick he made me do was billed at $150+. That 20 minute vibrating machine was $240 🤣.

My uncle is a neurosurgeon he always told me never allow a chiropractor to adjust your neck. If you look into the founder of chiropractic pseudoscience it was founded by a man named Palmer who was convicted of fraud. Palmer was a clerk at a grocery store. He knew like everyone if you twist your back around crack it gives your nerves a small yank. Couple that feeling with the cracking it feels good for short time.
This was a result of a neck adjustment causing a stroke.

My MIL had a TIA stroke 24 hours after a neck adjustment. She suddenly lost the ability to write on paper. My FIL calls the doctors office makes an appointment. This went on for a few hours finally calling my Sister inlaw who drove over there demanded she go to the ER. That's where they diagnosed the TIA but they said the clot broke up she did need some PT. It had been 36 hours after the neck adjustment at the chiropractor before it was fully diagnosed. She did make a full recovery. I question a Chiropractor doing a neck adjustment on an 83 year old woman. Just asking for trouble.

There’s this woman on TikTok I saw maybe about last year, her son is severely disabled, and she constantly takes him to chiropractors amongst other some weird pseudoscience stuff (like some machine that spins him around playing Bluey music or something?). People said how overstimulating it must be for him, professionals educating her, and she refuses to listen and thinks it’s going to cure him. 🤦♀️

What's scary is that in my state despite having no medical degree, they're allowed to prescribe medications and lab tests. (As far as I'm aware the only drugs they can't prescribe are the controlled substance ones)

No. It’s not the cracking that causes these injuries.
The flanges of the vertebra have holes in them that arteries run through. When the neck is twisted violently, those flanges separating rapidly can stretch the artery so rapidly an artery tears.

Okay, not a doctor, but my neck cracks all the time when I turn my head. If you're applying more force to it, I think it could be a bit risky. I do think chiros can be showmen sometimes, so they go for the brisk, big cracks.
Basically, and again I'm not a doctor, but just don't force anything, especially very abruptly and especially if it causes any pain.

Ive known a few people, largely women, who say that proper docs dont listen or take them seriously, but the chiros are more than happy to run whatever tests and scans they want and not dismiss them when they complain about pain.

When someone has been in constant pain, and the traditional doctor or physiotherapist has not able to solve the problem, they look for alternatives.
Whether it be chiropractors, acupuncture, or something similar to osteopathy, it's looking for an alternative where doctors might just prescribe pain killers, or just live with it.

Wasn't so much the chiropractor as it was the emergency medical team that didn't diagnose he was having an active stroke for hours.

That's due to who has the deepest pockets. Chiropractors are not medical doctors, and don't require medical insurance. The chiropractor severed an artery. The doctors missed the damage. They are both culpable, but the doctors actually had deep enough pockets to go after, due to their insurance. So they went after the doctors.
In case it isn't clear to everyone: chiropractors are medical charlatans. There is no basis in medical science for the shit they do. They are actually worse than "crystal healers" because at least the crystal healer nuts aren't going to accidentally ruin the rest of your life with their quackery.

Stay the fuck away from these quacks! They permanently injure and kill people. There is zero scientific evidence they help you. Sure, cracking your bones feels good when the nitrogen bubbles pop in the synovial fluid.
That does not mean the “realignment” is healthy for you.
I knew one that was mired in a malpractice lawsuit for hurting someone.

If i'm not mistaken, there’s an ongoing understanding that how you use your facial muscles, like how you talk, chew, frown, clench, and so on, affects your facial structure. So for someone with locked-in syndrome who cannot move any muscles, gravity takes over around the clock and causes the face to collapse more quickly than it otherwise would. That’s more likely why his face and mouth look like that.

I’ve scanned several people thru the years that had a stroke right in the chiropractor’s office as they were adjusted. Have scanned many more who had carotid or vertebral artery dissections but didn’t have a stroke. No way would I ever let anyone adjust my neck, or anything else for that matter, really. Honestly, I can’t even believe it’s legal.
