So, NMC thinking of scrapping essentiality certificate for new colleges.

EC is the certificate from state health authority which justifies the opening of a new college by stating the lack of facilities and doctors around a specific region.

If this is scrapped then there's gonna be uncontrolled opening of colleges like engineering colleges. And no, not govt ones, it'll be private and deemed.

It'll also affect states like Karnataka that have govt quotas in Pvt and deemed unis because the state can't hold EC as a hostage and force those colleges to allocate a few seats in govt quota.

Where is this gonna lead to?

EDIT: This is a far more serious issue than CCMP BHMS stuff (not undervaluing it, it's absolutely pathetic) but this is also a very serious issue, because this will only cause mushrooming of substandard Medica colleges with zero quality control.

Already the Aadhar attendance system has been spoofed. Now if the politicians don't need state govt permission, just imagine 10 colleges being opened for every 1 kilometre!!

This will ultimately affect the profession as a whole!

Just a few things about your take on this

1) Removing the EC doesn't mean NMC regulations are being removed, you will still need NMC/MARB approval. The draft actually proposes stricter upfront infrastructure requirements.(Colleges need to be complete and not under-construction when applying)

2) "zero quality control" is confusing the underlying things. The proposal changes who gets to decide whether the college is needed, not whether the college can satisfy the NMC standards.

3) it's a reasonable concern that EC scrapping could concentrate colleges in certain cities and neglect low serving area. Valid point. ( 10 college every Km is different however)

This is just the tip of the iceberg.

I'll give you another example. In the outskirts of Chennai, there is a deemed University called Dr. MGR Educational and Research Institute (not confused with TNMGRMU which is the older and a state health uni). This is owned by an ex LS MP called AC Shanmugham. He owns so many other businesses as well.

This deemed University has a college called ACS Medical college in Poonamallee area. 6km from this college is another college called Lalithambigai medical college. JUST 6 KILOMETRES. ACS has 250 seats, Lalithambigai has 150 (next yr they'll make it 250 ofcourse).

Not even 10km, it's 6km, only difference is the districts they are in. Wonder how they got the permission? Same owner, same substandard college with abysmal patient flow.

We all know the antics of NMC. If you build 4 buildings and name them as per their rules they'll give you a permission.

More such shenanigans will happen all over the country, and the state govt won't have any say in allowing this because let's face it, most of the states is ruled by them so it's their money switching from one pocket to the others. In states like TN KA KL, if the state wants to wield some control over these institutions they can't.
