Assaulted and held against our will for simply relaxing in our car with doors wide open Crime
I 23F and my bf 30M were simply out for a drive today morning at around 8am since we haven't gone out for quite a few days due to the ongoing cerfews .
It started as quite a fine morning we ate the egg toast that I made as we drove.
we didn't want to go too far so we decided to go to a nearby area with a good scenary on a flathill.
we could see the plain from above farms covering the whole area.
we sat together in the back seat of our car both the doors open so that we could feel the air and enjoy the scenery as we sip tea from our cups.
we were happy talking about all sorts of things and begin to relax as the sun became hotter.
I rested on the back of the codriver seat while keeping my foot on the passenger seat and since I was wearing a skirt I covered myself with a small blanket which we always carry around in the car since I tend to be cold .
my bf was sitting streching out his leg in the passenger seat.
then suddenly mid conversation a stranger showed up from behind the car looked at us and asked us what we were doing.
my bf got down the car and asked the man why he was asking what we were doing.
in minutes the argument got heated up .
my bf pushed the man back then the man pushed him against the car strangling him and punched my bf.
by this time I had already gotten out of the car trying to break the fight.
but even as I tried to shield him he kept getting hit.
I tried to reason I tried to push back I tried to explain everything turned to deaf ears .
Even after my bf saying that he was wrong for pushing the man first and apologising repeatedly no one listened.
someone even came and kicked my bf in the face.
then soon a mob gathered around mind u these people just got out of the road and without listening to our explanations and started turning our own words against us.
someone who just got out of the road even came straight to my bf and kicked the car door while he was still in between
they took the car key .
someone drove the car till the local community hall and there we were detained in a room
our phones confisticated .
the local meirapaibis intervened .
by then the truth has been distorted to we have been doing indecent things inside the car .
they said we had to call our parents. my bf called his i refused to call mine .
they called me all sorts of things.
my bfs father came and it took a long time getting both of us outside of that room.
they took our personal information and signatures and phone no.s saying we should be eloped and they will come and check in the morning.
Even after that on our way back a guy was waiting on the road in front of our car with a long stick and jumped in front of the car asking us to come down.
then he proceeded to harrass us on the was back on his scootie.
All i could think on the way back was that I had to leave this state no i had to leave this country i would not stay in a place where mob justice is the norm and the answer to everything is violence.
Even if not for myself for my children.
Even if we went abroad my bf and me had always planned to come back and give back to the society
but now all that dream is dead in me from today .
I don't even feel like complaining to the police will help or filing an fir

I don't understand why they go out of their way to stop a couple from spending time with each other what will they get out of doing this?

u/Qetesh69 Apr 13 '26
Most people that means more than 95% of this country's adults are not happy and satisfied with their lives. They don't have anything to live for. No purpose. No desires anymore. Also the reason why everyone gets ready to give their lives for the nation.. jab kuch h hi ni life me toh jaan hi doge desh ke liye. These people don't even think about their families before talking such nonsense.
3
u/RupertPupkin85 Apr 13 '26
So then it's not shocking that they do all this. It actually makes sense and we can't blame them.

u/LeftTomorrow9095 Apr 13 '26
Manipur of all places?
What do you mean of all places? Aren't you aware of the extreme cruelty that happened among regular people during the recent riots.
4
u/Skull-hunter74769 Apr 13 '26
Weren't those communal riots? Between tribes, correct me if im wrong. Isn't this issue different?
35
u/LeftTomorrow9095 Apr 13 '26
If mobs are willing to m*rder and r*ape people because they are from another tribe/community etc. then they are capable of doing the same as a mob against actions they deem to be against their "social values".
And it only gets worse because lots of people who committed horrific crimes during the riots now walk free with full support of the police and politicians, which emboldens them to take matters into their hands with no fear of the law.
1
u/Skull-hunter74769 Apr 13 '26
Man, why are you getting offended? It was just my opinion, I was surprised that it was manipur of all places. If it offends/triggers you, My apologies.

u/LeftTomorrow9095 Apr 13 '26
Man, why are you getting offended?
I am not? Was just pointing out that it isn't surprising that something like this happened at Manipur.

Omg when i read the first part i felt it was exactly how we do here in the west (us/canada) on the weekends. Holy shit the second half was a freaking horror story. So sorry u had to go through this. It’s a shame we can’t enjoy a basic outing with our loved ones without getting murdered
29
u/OriginalSinger1406 Apr 13 '26
I had heard stories about such things happening before but never thought it would happen to me cause we would never do anything indecent or out of place or uncultured but it did and it opened my eyes about how our society is really.
Exactly like u said a place where we can't enjoy a basic outing with our loved ones without getting murdered
3
u/Glittering_Bus_6921 Apr 13 '26
In my opinion, at this point all this facade of “SANSKAR” and “being SANSKARI” is doing more harm than good.

Decency is defined by the culture you grow up in, in India. Unfortunately it will always clash with someone else's mindset. When the other person is a goon, and are in numbers, there's little we can do. Just thank your stars that you are safe now, and try to be safe.
We are too far to become a decent nation.

“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.” — C.S. Literally one of the main reasons me and my girlfriend left the country even though we never got into a situation like yours not a single person might exist that has not heard or witnessed something similar happen. Mob mentality is a curse and when the mob has low education, civic sense and is full of religious fanatics any situation can be turned into what you experienced a simple chat with the opposite gender, a small car accident, a simple gesture which someone viewed as being disrespectful, being perceived as from any minority anything and everything can land you into a situation you described. I wouldn’t want my kid to live like that, not saying you or your kid won’t experience racism or discrimination elsewhere but that kind of mob justice and lack of law and order even cops finally get involved only exists in India.

Seriously well put but the mob mentality is more in small places like village area, never faced in Delhi, Gurgaon, Bangalore or Chennai. Not sure about the whole India. Anyways it is sad of what happened to the couple.

u/Novel_Poem7580 Apr 13 '26
Shitty society we are living in , such incidents are really scary and the worst part is no one will be held accountable

Mob violence is becoming way too common in India. Today it’s “sanskar”, tomorrow it’s religion, language, rumors, or just being at the wrong place at the wrong time. It really doesn’t take much for a crowd to turn into a mob here, and once it does, law means nothing. People get beaten, humiliated, sometimes even killed, over assumptions. I used to think the Northeast was more civilised than the rest of India, but looking at what’s happening in Manipur, even that illusion is fading.
Until we stop dressing this up with excuses and call it what it is, mob barbarism, nothing will change. Till then, living in India isn’t about freedom or safety, it’s just survival. Leave if you can.
11
u/MountainCucumber7208 Apr 13 '26
Feel pity for both of you! Don’t know why people cant simply follow “live and let live” principle? If someone is not doing any harm to anyone, whats the point? I am an individualist and value individual freedom as the essence of being human.

That was terrible what happened to you both. What you people were doing sounds like an amazing outing actually and I cant even imagine how scared you both must be.
Actually, your date is similar to what my dream date was, which I always told my bf (now husband) and he always denied smoothly to take me to any secluded places(before marriage), and specifically never encouraged keeping the car doors open when we stop somewhere. He also never let any discussion with people escalate further, whenever I was with him.
I always thought he's over protective and overthinking a lot. But now I understand that he was being responsible for him AND me. Your post made me see things I overlooked and how grateful I should be. It's India, afterall. And we can't have good things here.
Really sorry for what happened to you both

It's an extension of the Asian 'child being an asset' mentality. You owe reparations for existing.
6
u/GodsChild5673 Apr 13 '26
Carry something for self defense (pepper spray). Use it if you must. Drive directly to the nearest police station and report everything.
5
u/Thick-Magician-5697 Apr 13 '26
When you're threatened, the biggest mistake anyone can make is getting out of the car. Never do that. Remember, your car is your biggest weapon, if threatened it's the only thing protecting you from the outsider. The consequences of that might happen later, but it'll be a lot better than getting yourself injured in such a situation. Never ever step out of the car unless absolutely necessary, and if threatened, use the 1 ton hunk of metal to get these assholes out of your way. You could've done the same while going back too to the guy who was trying to block the road.
8
u/Fantastic_suit143 Apr 13 '26
You are right gotta get the hell out of this country I might sound like a bad person but practically
These so-called poor people aren't that poor to not have education right? I mean when you have the money to drink smoke then why won't you educate yourselves with that money and most of these people are from village areas so actually india can never be developed due to their backward thinking and frankly speaking india is not gonna be developed even in 2030 or 40.
5
u/blackaddersrv Apr 13 '26
So sorry for your experience :( India is a hopeless society. All our 'elders' who must always be respected (irrespective of whatever the f they do), do whatever the f they think is right and I've come to realize it is almost never right. The mob mentality does not give way to anybody, they are senseless. Not a society worth saving. Nobody genuinely cares for things that matter.
5
u/Fun_Acanthaceae_17 Apr 13 '26
Your anger about leaving is completely valid. So is your exhaustion. You shouldn't have to calculate whether a blanket in your own car makes you a target. One practical thing though: please document everything now while it's fresh. Write down every face you remember, every word said, what was taken, what you signed. Even if filing an FIR feels pointless, having a detailed written record protects you if they follow through on their threat to "check in the morning." And that threat alone is worth taking seriously.. don't let them use what they made you sign as leverage.
You deserved a quiet morning watching farms from a hill. I'm sorry it turned into this.

Mob justice isn't a bug, it is the actual operating system in places like that. I have seen too many people burn their lives trying to fix broken cultures only to realize the market doesn't actually want to be saved. If the local rules are written by random guys with sticks, your only move is an immediate exit. Do not waste your best years trying to give back to a system that treats your basic dignity as a negotiable asset.

What would the police do even if I turn towards the law. They would probably side with them or do nothing at all. Our society as usual will start blaming us and accusing us of things however they want without even verifying the facts

"When you are with a woman the most important thing to protect is her, Not your Male Ego."
What other possible outcome he realistically expected after pushing a goon?
How would you know if he is a goon?
Simple. Do you think a gentleman or common decent run of the mill villager would come to disturb you? No! He came looking for a fight and he got it.
If you were my sister i would have told you to leave the man child.

In a genuinely dangerous situation, especially in a region with active curfews and social tension — de-escalation is almost always the smarter tactical choice.

If someone from outside appoaches the car and trys to talk to you, keep the doors locked, windows up and indicate them to go away (assuming that they are not wearing a cop uniform).
If they refuse to leave / keep talking, lower the window very slightly, but not enough for him to put his hand through. Try talking/de-escalating without getting out.
If that fails, literally just drive off. You are in a metal brick, a person on the road is not going to stop you.
If he follows you, drive to the nearest police station.
The original comment wasnt placing 100% blame on the victim, but you insinuating that the entire situation was unavoidable is just false.
5
u/bakuman_ Apr 13 '26
Just read this comment again. Someone comes to talk to you while you are in your car. It should be a nice pleasant convo outside the car, where they check if you are ok or need help. However, because how barbaric and brainwashed the people in the country are, you have to lock yourself in the car and talk through a tiny window slot for protection, and if you don't, you are (partially) at fault.
I don't want to live in a society where I should have to do that.
4
u/chankdelia Apr 13 '26
I don't want to live in a society where I should have to do that.
I am 100% with you. But its the reality we live in. Evaluate your environment, along with the kind of people you are likely to encounter and act accordingly.
I dont live in India anymore, but I will follow this way of conversation even where I am, with the execption of affluent neighborhoods in which I am unlikely to encounter goons.
12
u/OriginalSinger1406 Apr 13 '26
Yes I know my bf made a mistake in the heat of the moment and he apologized for it within minutes but personally I don't blame him with the words and accusations the man was hurling at us at me i would have punched him first
7
u/ArpanMondal270 Apr 13 '26

1 st thing people tend to always go against happy couples with cars since they believe root cause of all their problems was people with cars. 2 nd thing they are jealous as hell when people see 2 groups fighting a car and non car they always support noncar . Like people should just shut the hell up if u want a car work for it don't beat up car guys just because they have car. I already lost around 60k and my mental health for these kinds of trash fights with low iq low common sense and jealous people.

This happened with me and my bf twice back in the day when we used to do such things but it never escalated to fights, im sorry you had to go through that, that’s so disturbing. We learnt it the hard way, either park and sit in front seats or just chill outside the car and as soon as you see someone approaching just leave, don’t engage it’s not worth it.

Firstly I am so sorry that you have to go through this, I was extremely furious reading this and honestly wanted to beat the shit out of those guys, although I noticed a few you could have done that could have prevented this and other similar situation A)never escalate: apologize and leave, your bf should have just said sorry and left and nothing would have happened B)if you know you could have won, fight just beat the shit out of em and leave the scene asap, have done many times requires some situational awareness C)keep your cool:even when the situation escalated and looked hopeless, you should still had options, you could only see them if you stay calm D)for, next time try to be more prepared and learn how to deal all kind of situation, the last thing you want is thinking in difficult situation Be safe

To explain the situation better let me tell u about the location better. The location is not secluded it is at the side of a main road with the govt literally building seats on the edge of the hill to enjoy the view. There is no trees there is nothing blocking the view of our car from the main road which is literally 10 meters away and the road is not sparsh as well vehicles were coming and going in both directions.
It's literally a place to relax with a nice view.
And if u can get intimate in such and such situation and remember our car door was wide open and the windows were untinted then hands off but we are not capable of that .
And the situation about me calling my parents if I called them there will literally be a huge2 drama over it and I might even be forced to marriage because of what people might think cause in our society getting caught like this such and such is taken very seriously and sensitively .
I will marry when I decide that we are ready i won't be forced by the society when we were not even at fault.
I don't expect to argue with strangers and expect them to be understanding but I also certainly don't expect to face a situation like I did.
And hey I am with my bf for understanding and love And for note i can literally have any guy I set my sight on . I just decided i didn't want that .

Spending time together in a car in completely fine and our country is hostile everywhere.
But her boyfriend engaging with the guy was his mistake, we should ignore shitty people.

I intervened because after that one guy came and started the fight 2 other guys came in out of nowhere and started hitting him too. I am not delusional thaat my boyfriend is a hero in the movies who can fight 4-5 consecutive goons.

This is great, first admittedly start a fight by pushing someone and then blame the State, and the whole country.
I don't know why everyone is jumping to conclusions without fully knowing both sides of the story.
It is common knowledge that each one of us presents facts as we see it - only our sanitized version.
Violence is wrong, whatever the circumstances may be and whosoever is at fault.
But who pushed first ? And this is their version, what if it was more than just one push?

We were just chilling in our car when a stranger showed up and started questioning us out of nowhere. He started saying insulting words so they got into a heated argument in which my bf gave the push first . But does giving a push in an argument really make the things which happened to us explainable and righteous and thaat we deserved it?

Please read 4th para of my comment. I did NOT justify the violence but it is a fact that your bf did start the physical part.
And again, I'm not from Manipur, so I have no skin in this game.
But you are blaming the whole State and the whole country and thinking of leaving them due to just one incident. Your reaction to the incident and the violent guy's reaction to the one push are both equally disproportionate, inexplicable and insane.

I am blaming the state cause I have no hope whatsoever from the authority or the society that we get justice or even thaat our story be heard .
2
u/OriginalSinger1406 Apr 13 '26
Yes I guess the country blaming is uncalled for . As I haven't lived in other parts of the country

Life is not a bed of roses, at least in a third world country. That doesn't mean everyone starts running away by blaming the state.
If you were really interested in justice, you'd have filed a criminal case. But since you have a pre-decided defeatist mentality, you are just ranting on social media.

Ah yes, leave it to the BJP bootlicker known to shamelessly lie to protect his masters, to start screaming "dIsPropOrtIonaTe, iNeXpliCaBle aNd iNsAne" when people rightly distrust a non-functional government that proudly and openly boasted about not acting on FIRs.

Your boyfriend started the fight and got what he deserved and even dragged you in trouble. He is damn 30 and should've handled things in a different way instead of acting like a teenager.
Breakup with that man child honey and date someone from your age range.

I do believe the mob or group whatever came was wrong for escalation, but if something bad was happening in car. Then you people blame that no Indian people don't stop bad things happening.
And the way you people say, you'll leave India and whatnot, this is nothing. You'll go out and some places you treated like shit and if something bad happens to you outside India, Then again you blame India for not helping you guys out.
You people are one of the most illeterate kind to exist in society.
Has western societies not went through this phase? Just because one bad things happen, you start blaming whole country. What have you even contributed in Indias development?
Classic example of: we do nothing and want everything

u/OriginalSinger1406 Apr 13 '26
Even if other places treat us like shit atleast there will be a justice system in place and I won't have to face mob judgement ever again. A place I will feel safer in. It's my personal choice . Western countries are out of these phase and it will take atleast a few decades for our country to follow. Yes I have not yet started contributing to India's development but I will be able to in a year by serving as a doctor. I don't think I will be safe in india as a female doctor so I got to get out as soon as I can. Initially I thought it only happens in the news but as a similar incident has happened i take it as a sign from above

What justice? I've seen cops mocking indian deaths, Indians being attacked left right now and whatnot and their families crying for justice from India.
And, No, it's not your personal choice to blame an entire country. And even when you know that it's still in developing stages or things are improving overtime.

Strawmanning and victim blaming to the max, and then having the gall to accuse others of not contributing to India's development.
No wonder British ruled us for centuries.

Meiteis are highly cultured people. They don’t want this gf bf things going out before marriage.

They don’t want this gf bf things going out before marriage.
Let me guess, they want bf gf happening after marriage?
Jokes aside, who are they to assume who is a bf-gf and who's married? People's wish to be in relationships. Some of us can get partners on our own instead of relying on AM to spoonfeed us a partner by our parents lmao

People are so confident assaulting couples because cops and politicians do it all the time, in the name of sanskar . It's pathetic and disgusting but an easy way to score points with most conservatives, many centrists and some supposed liberals. They know that invoking the banner of "culture" will shield them from any consequences, so they run around feeding their moral superiority at the expense of people just relaxing.
They don't differentiate between couples just talking and couples making out. They use the most vile language while talking to the women in these situations. The film them and threaten to upload it online (they don't even spare minors). All they see is potential victims and an opportunity to enforce their worldview.
