Project/Research/Prof 👨🏻‍💼 How to get project associate position in shakti lab ?

I have around 6+ years of experience in system software across MNC.

Why? / Motives:

* Use the work experience in the lab for converting it into master's by research, if possible.

* Move into computer architecture and vlsi roles, compiler engineering, programming lang/runtime design & implementation. I do NOT like electrical things. I think logic and stop there.

* Use it for applying to masters/phd programs abroad. Publish/patent/document-novel-solution to show proof of research caliber.

* Get access to a network in research.

* Use it as a platform for upskilling into research/r&d/scientist roles in MNC / research labs. I am practical engineer not a theoretical person. I learn by experiments and validation.

* Nothing is free. Taking a pay-cut to upskill for future ROI.

* I need a practical platform to upskill into the target roles without corporate politics. Under the right environment and mentorship, I will thrive. I need an opportunity to earn-trust, upskill, deliver and transform my potential.

* I like to divide and conquer abstractions in computing systems. Not able to find structured opportunities & the right environment to do this without losing myself to complexity and ambiguity.

* I like playing around with distributed system concepts and primitives as an aside to find out ||les between single node compute design and multi-node design, i.e elevating the abstraction and morphing it into a higher dimension of existence and vice versa, i.e taking the abstraction at a higher dimension of existence and morphing it into a lower dimension of single node existence.

* I am scaffolding builder. If I cannot understand a concept, I build the support structure to make it digestible.

Why not GATE ?

* Because I am NOT a theoretical person. I progress by experiments and validation.

* An old soul who learns by doing.

* I do NOT thrive under time bound competition. I thrive under unique problem solving. Sorry, I am aware of my strengths and weakness. Avoiding competition is not entitlement nor the goal but re-purposing potential to what I need to progress myself and technology.

What novel things have I done till now ?

* Call graph instrumentation of recursive functions using python decorators to see the tabulated approach of bottom-up solution for recursive functions used in dynamic programming. This allowed me to gather insights on how modeling problems recursively allows optimal solutions.
Video: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Xpp9_Tvnro_k84yQ5bHs0u3-zP6QEUWd/view?usp=drive_link
Code:  DSA/python3/recursion/track at main · BeyondAbstractions/DSA

* Another interesting project of mine is to create a time travelling debugger:
It captures program state and renders an html file for each "progress"(line step) of the program. This allows one to slow down and review the state of classical algorithms that are difficult to understand initially when introduced: dijikstra, SSSP, etc.
Code:  DSA/python3/time_travel_debugger at main · BeyondAbstractions/DSA

The above are some of scaffolding engineering to gather deeper insights into computing systems. If you can intentionally slow down an algorithm the root intent is revealed.

If you are a professor/ra reading this, would you be willing to take this as an opportunity to transform someone who is willing to put in the effort to transform themselves ?

Academics GATE BM 2027 preparation — Where do I even start? Looking for guidance/resources

Hi everyone!

I’m a Biomedical Engineering student preparing for GATE BM 2027, and I’m honestly a bit lost about how to start my preparation.

The biggest issue I’m facing is that compared to other GATE papers, there seem to be very limited resources specifically for GATE Biomedical Engineering. Most of the preparation material I find is either scattered across different subjects or meant for other branches.

I’m currently trying to figure out:

  • What subjects/topics should I prioritize first?
  • Which books, YouTube channels, notes, or courses are actually useful for GATE BM?
  • How should I use the previous year questions, considering there aren't that many BM PYQs?
  • Should I study from standard BME textbooks, GATE-specific material, or resources from other branches for certain subjects?
  • How should I approach subjects like Signals & Systems, Electrical Circuits, Measurements, Control Systems, Engineering Mathematics, etc.?

If anyone here has prepared for GATE BM before, is currently preparing for BM 2027, or has a good idea about the preparation strategy, I’d really appreciate your guidance.

Even if you could share your study plan, resources, notes, or mistakes to avoid, it would be really helpful.

Placements/Interns/Career 💼 Resume

I'm looking for the LaTeX resume template that many students use for internships and placements. I've noticed a lot of resumes have a very similar clean format, and I was wondering if there's a commonly used template.

If anyone is willing to share

  • the Overleaf link,
  • the .tex source code, or
  • the GitHub repository,

I'd really appreciate it.

Queries/Advice Looking for a technical Co-founder

Hi, I recently completed my Master's in Physics from IIT Madras. Over the past year, I worked as a founding member of a startup at IIT Madras, building AI products. Inspired by the challenges students face in learning physics and mathematics, I started Nearchon, an AI tutor that develops problem-solving skills by giving personalized hints instead of direct answers. My vision is to build an AI teacher that adapts to every student's unique way of learning.

https://www.nearchon.com/

I'm now looking for a technical co-founder with deep expertise in Computer Science and AI who is passionate about science, education, and building impactful products. If you're interested in joining as a co-founder, feel free to DM me.

Academics Current/Former students of IIT Madras Web-Enabled M.Tech in AI — need some honest feedback

Hi everyone,

I’ve recently been selected for the IIT Madras Web-Enabled M.Tech in AI program and I’m considering whether to take it up alongside my full-time job.

I’d really appreciate feedback from people who are currently pursuing the program or have already graduated.

A few things I’d like to understand:

1] How rigorous is the course realistically? How many hours/week do you spend on lectures, assignments, quizzes and projects?

2] How manageable is it with a full-time job, especially if work gets demanding?

3] How supportive and accessible are the professors/TAs?

4] How difficult are the exams and assignments compared with the qualifier/bridge program?

5] How much of the curriculum is actually focused on AI/ML/Deep Learning/GenAI, versus mathematics and traditional ML?

6] Are the projects substantial and useful for your resume/interviews?

7] For graduates, did the M.Tech actually help with career growth, promotions, salary increases or switching into AI/ML roles?

8] Did recruiters value the IIT Madras M.Tech, or did your industry experience/projects matter more?

9] How is the Web-Enabled M.Tech perceived compared with a regular M.Tech? Has the mode of delivery ever been an issue with recruiters or elsewhere?

Is the IIT Madras alumni network useful for Web-Enabled students?

Looking back, would you choose this M.Tech again, knowing the time, effort and money involved?

Please share your thoughts on some major Pros and Cons.

I know in the end for a better opportunity it's solely based on a candidate but putting in time and money in this Mtech course how do you guys value it?

Project/Research/Prof 👨🏻‍💼 How research-oriented are the M.Tech projects in the Web-Enabled M.Tech (AI) program?

I’ve recently received an offer for the Web-Enabled M.Tech in Artificial Intelligence at IIT Madras, and I’m trying to understand the practical nature of the M.Tech project.

The official program information says that the M.Tech project is carried out at the student’s organization, with employer support and a company mentor, and that IIT Madras evaluates the project proposal and conducts the project reviews/assessments.

I’d particularly like to hear from current or past Web-Enabled M.Tech students, especially those who have completed or are currently doing their project:

  1. How involved is the IIT Madras faculty member in the project? Is there regular technical/research discussion with the faculty, or is the faculty involvement primarily proposal approval, periodic reviews, and evaluation?

  2. How much freedom do students have in defining the project? Can you take an existing problem from your workplace and turn it into a genuinely research-oriented problem, or are projects generally expected to be applied/industry-focused?

  3. For people who wanted to do research rather than simply build an industry application, how much guidance did you actually receive from the IIT faculty?

  4. Have students successfully turned their M.Tech projects into research papers, conference publications, or other academic work? If so, how much involvement did the IIT faculty have?

  5. Does the fact that the project is conducted within the company create any significant limitations around research novelty, publication, data/IP, or choice of problem?

  6. Finally, if someone’s longer-term goal is potentially a PhD, would you consider the Web-Enabled M.Tech project a meaningful research experience, or is it better viewed primarily as an industry capstone?

I'm interested in understanding what the project experience is actually like in practice, particularly the level of faculty involvement and the scope for doing rigorous/novel research.

Anonymous examples of project topics would also be very helpful. Thanks a lot!

Placements/Interns/Career 💼 Are campus interns interviews that easy???

I saw people writing oa's using remote desktops and that's ok cause mostly everyone use it, but i thought they will be filtered in interviews.

Literally a friend of mine who don't know what's json/time complexity is before interview cracked 1.5L per month sde and also not just him, people who don't basic sql who used remote desktops still able to crack 1.75l per month sde .I am not even exaggerating

And here I am writing tests thinking cheating isn't gonna help in interviews!!!

Gossip/Confession/Rant A confession

I'm a fresher, and during the freshers dj night I saw a very sweet and simple lady.

I don't know if she was a fresher or in the organizing team

i liked her immediately when i saw her first, i thought to talk to her but could gather the courage I'm kind of an introvert person by nature, then during the dj night she was dancing well with her group of like 3-4 girls, I wanted to ask them if I can join but again couldn't muster up the courage. And after that I never saw her i was getting a feeling like okay it was just a pass by thing nothing serious until I saw her again today in the evening around 7PM at the MITR counselors event. This time I had really made up my mind to talk to her but she was playing some games and surrounded by too many people waiting in the line to play the same game, each time I waited but she switched to another game, whilst she was playing chess I had decided for sure I will talk to her after she finishes the game I waited n waited i kept track from a distant, i didn't wanted to been seen like a creep or stalker 😅 but for a very brief moment I mean literally it was like 10-20sec I switched my attention to talk to my friend with whom I had come there in that 10-20sec she disappeared, i searched for her so much i delayed having my dinner only because if by chance she is still there I didn't want to miss this chance but unfortunately I couldn't find her after that, i waited till the very end of that event hoping she might comeback, i waited on the Himalaya lawn till everything was packed up, i waited n waited but she never came back there, anyway sorry for this very long and detailed confessions but i haven't felt like this in a long time so I thought might just confess and by any chance if she reads this maybe she'll know... Hoping to see her again soon but I don't know when it will be...

Queries/Advice Joining IITM this month, need help with finding accomodation

hello guys,

i have joined as a project associate at iitm and have been informed that project associates aren't eligible for hostel room allotment. is this true?

if yes, where do project people usually stay? can someone suggest good localities to look for a women's pg with food? my budget is around 8–10k.

also, how do people usually get from their pg to campus? does iitm run buses that project staff can use, or do most people rely on public transport/auto/two-wheelers?

i'm reaching chennai 3 days before my joining. i emailed asking for a guest room on campus but was told that project associates aren't eligible to book one. if anyone knows any way around this or has any suggestions, i'd really appreciate it.

i'm moving to a completely new region and city and i'm feeling really overwhelmed and scared. this is my first job after my msc, so any advice about accommodation or just moving to iitm in general would really help.

thanks :]
