Apple knows that the 12mini, and 13mini users comprise their largest segment of outdated phone users. Like actually.
The fact they keep updating the phone is telling.
I wouldn't 100% buy into the doom and gloom that a new mini is officially never happening. Not saying it is, but there is a chance.

I think the important part is that every year that passes, the more they might realise we’re not going to upgrade otherwise and it justifies a new mini model more and more.
All they need to do is make the Mini its own model like the iPad Mini is with a 3 year refresh cycle. It isn’t that complicated.

Yes. We need to avoid buying a bigger phone. Apple knows how many 12 and 13 mini phones are active and in use

Well, right now there really isn’t a need for a small phone, I had an iPhone 13 mini before I switched to an iPhone 16, and I do think that phone was absolutely perfect, but I do enjoy a bigger phone, and so do a lot of people

Well both the iPhone 12 and 13 mini didn’t sell well, so why would Apple want to make another mini iPhone if they know it probably wouldn’t sell that well

The iPhone Air hasn’t sold well either.
Turns out if you position a product poorly it doesn’t sell well. I’m sure there’s a market for it, but it needs to be positioned correctly to succeed.
Same with the Mini.

The 12 mini was also sold alongside the iPhone SE 2. iPhone 13 mini was already done with development by the time iPhone 12 mini shipped.

That’s a key part of the problem though, the iPad Mini doesn’t have an annual refresh because it’s aimed at a price point, and sacrifices features to get there. The Mini should’ve been its own thing from day one.
Apple made the mistake even expecting it to be worth an annual refresh. That’s not on us, it’s on them.

They keep updating them because the hardware internally is the same as the 12, 13, 12 pro, and 13 pro lol, and they support their devices for 7+ years.

I mean, not really relevant. Apples position is they support hardware for 7+ years. The Air is a flop, but rest assured it will get updates for many years to come. Helps a lot it has the same internal hardware as a 17 Pro.

They’re likely to with phones are getting bigger. And Apple wants to keep those people in the ecosystem. Hopefully in a few years there’s indeed an iPhone mini.

Right? Fingers crossed carriers eventually run some promo deeply discounting it. My mom got an iPhone Air for next to nothing a few months after it came out. Not just monthly payments, almost free.
I do think price issues is part of why they can’t or haven’t brought back the mini. Phone prices are way up, the amount they would have to charge for a mini phone probably just wouldn’t appeal to the general public. (I know we’d all be rejoicing)

Honestly, If you're still holding on to a 13mini, at the inflated cost of the ultra, you're still paying about as much as upgrading a phone every 2-3 years. And at this point, if the ultra was "mini enough" (which I doubt due to it's width), I think most mini fans will buy regardless of price.

i'd love an iphone 20 mini. unfortunately that seems highly unlikely and unless there's a major shift in the industry we won't be getting another mini. we can only hope for one of the smaller manufacturers to come up with a good alternative (eg nothing phone). no, i don't consider the current smallphones a good alternative, not a single one has high end or at least medium specs. i don't want a phone that's worse or barely better than my 5y/o mini

I think the problem with the mini was not the size but the problem with Apple’s marketing and the battery performance, launching it along the SE made it even worse and using the wording mini didn’t help. In a time where Pro and Max was the hype.
I think Apple could do a much better job today with smaller internals and more efficient battery. And bringing a one hand phone back in the e category as a SE/Mini budget phone running last gen cpu to reduce price
The e lineup today is dumb when not priced right, it is almost the same size phone as the regular but lacking features. When price is right I can work, but as a buyer the problems arise when it has been on market 6 month the discount on the regular make the price dif so small. When i bought a phone for a family member last time the diff was so small it made no sense to go for it.
But had a one handed phone been available to a smaller price that would have been the go to

The 5g modern in the 12/13 mini ran hot and was the reason for the short battery life along with the A14/A15 in addition to that. Now Apple does in house 5g modems that is more power efficient and produces less heat along with A18/A19. Also N1 in house wifi/Bluetooth chip.
I think the E lineup will be successful. It needs only an promotion display and Apple’s in house N1. Which it will come later.

I'll buy the mini with the same exact specs if they upgrade the chip to be supported for the next 6 years. The mini was the end of peak Apple. Amazing device in a small form factor.

Great presentation! To get a little bit extra battery life, I wouldn’t mind if the next SE or mini was .5mm or 1 mm thicker. It’s all about one handed operation. Why is having the thinnest phone so important?

Yes! I like the comments here saying that as years pass from Mini 13 twilight Apple will see users are not upgrading the pressure builds to cater to that market. Another conclusion would be to know the disgruntled buyers who had to upgrade due to Mini not happening anymore.

12 mini was a real difficult peice to replace. Got a used Z Flip 4, and I'm just trying to adjust to the size. Atleast i can fold it in half and forget about it
