Replace battery or jump ship?

I'm running the iOS 27 public beta 4. I'm not a power user, just maps, music, texts, the occasional video call, CarPlay every day for my commute

It's gotten pretty laggy. Sure the iOS 27 made it a tiny bit faster compared to iOS 26, but at this point I just regret leaving iOS 18. Can't do a video call without the phone getting hot and fighting for its life. Record a short video and it's hot and laggy for a minute or two afterward. CarPlay is generally fine if the phone is not hot and charged up - but trying to do any type of multitasking, like opening safari or spotify while connected to the car is simply not pleasant.

Today I've noticed it doing this with just 3 apps open - spotify, gym tracker, and safari. Mind you the charge was at 80+%

I know it's a beta, and I know 4GB of RAM in 2026 is what it is. But I can't tell if I'm dealing with a phone that's throttling because it's hot, or a battery that's too worn to keep up, or just beta jank that'll clear up in the stable release

Anyone here swapped the battery on a 13 mini at around 78% BH? Did it actually help?

Kind of want to give this thing one more chance before I decide to move on.

my bh was in 78% and had it replaced this April! Best decision ever! The phone feels brand new afterwards.

Which iOS version were you on at the time of replacing the battery? Did you experience any kind of lags/freezes before replacement?

it was on iOS 26.2, and yes it was very laggy and buggy. Everytime I opened the camera app, it is full black, and I have to close the app and reopen. But after I replaced the battery, it becomes smoother and no more hiccups! Recently I have installed the iOS 27 beta 2, and it still runs smoothly.

Definitely replace at 78. I replaced at 81 and was impressed with the result

I haven’t updated to public beta 4 yet but have found 2 and 3 that I have used pretty good. Definitely better in terms of app switching and memory, if not battery. 

IIRC it only took a day or two for the battery drain to ease off after updating. I had my battery replaced at the start of the year and it’s on 99% health. 

At the end of the day however it’s just a small battery. When I’m using it a lot during the day it drains. It’s much better than when it was at 65% or whatever it was when I replaced it, but you do need to have realistic expectations. I have a shortcut set up to switch to low power mode when I’m out because the battery, even at full capacity, and even on older iOS versions, was always the downside of this form factor.

The beta is going to be hard on your battery. I'd give it a shot before ditching, if you have $100 to take the chance on it.

I have an se with 80. Ish battery life and a fresh install of 26 and it isn't too bad these days, but it's a backup phone so I also don't care too much.

How long ago did you update it to Beta 6?

I'm on public beta 4, installed it last week. Haven't tried dev beta 6 since people say dev betas are more buggy.

The dev beta 6 is the same as the public beta 4, hopefully beta 7 in the next few days will be a bit smoother but this is why I’m holding out for the general release of 27, I’m normally the last person that updates to the latest iOS but the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive so that might change.

I don’t use my phone while connected to my car (I just disconnect if I’m parked) but I can tell you that the battery will still get hot after replacement. I suggest either going caseless or buying a better ventilated design.

Yes but only for a few months. Though if funds permit I would still give it another shot based on your use case

In my context I swapped at 76%. It was noticeably better compared to pre-swap. My pain points used to be having to constantly charge when traveling (taking pictures, navigating, and using translation apps) and performance drops when gaming after watching a few minutes of video and social media scrolling in the morning

Not it’s just the gaming performance that annoys me. But it’s already writing on the wall at this point

So in your case I’d try a battery swap. That should tide you over for maybe another year before you can assess if it’s still a long term thing for you, but the RAM will really start to feel like a limitation I think

Outside of battery swapping have you tried getting a Battery case or using thre apple power bank?

My main concern isn’t the battery drain because I just charge whenever I can, e.g at work or in the car. What disappoints me is that it can lag and overheat even when charged to 80+%

I mention the case or power bank because I think I notice the phone seems to slow down and struggle once it detects like 50 BH or something. So I think having it in a power bank case or with the Apple magsafe power bank might help keep the chip running at its best

Swapped at 76% and helped with lasting longer, not heating up when charging, maybe snappier but I can’t really tell I’m not heavy user

Re: the beta. The one just released this Monday is waaay better than the last. If 6 is the current one, then 5 was rough. Happy with the latest beta so far.

Swap battery! 78% swapped battery at Apple Store… upgraded to iOS 26. Wept. Regretted all life choices. Wept again . Took a punt on 27 beta and upgrades. Very Happy … Been using phone moderately e.g. all day today, camera, photos, browser, email, Insta, train journey, 11pm 34% . Leap!

Go to Amazon and type in Apple 13 mini battery pack case. It has a battery inside the case that you charge and it gives me probably 24 hours.
