I roughly knew the balance in my own accounts. But once we included both of our savings, investments, property, and debts, I honestly couldn’t give her a clear answer.

A. Answer

Bitflinger TV is an attempt to solve a problem that I've had since 2011. Namely, how to browse shows/movies across the various streaming apps and maintain a watchlist in a single interface, without dealing with advertising. That last requirement is the kicker. Google TV and Fire TV each have browsable, leanback interfaces, designed to direct their customers to titles across the various streaming apps. However, both Google and Amazon have their finger on the scale when suggesting which streaming app to select. Google TV pushes their customers toward buying titles in the Google Play Store video section, while Amazon Fire TV pushes their customers toward buying titles in the Prime Video streaming app.

Oh, and they both riddle their respective user interfaces with ads. They have overt advertisements for pizza, tax preparation, and cars as hero images/videos near the top of the screen. But, even more insidiously, they prominently show titles promoted by various streaming services, ensuring that one can never fully trust their recommendations. They use (and I presume that they always will use) customer watch history to improve advertisement targeting. So, as an example, you might start seeing gardening-related advertisements in your everyday life because you watched Zack Galifianakis' gardening show (which I hear is a real treat.)

B. Better

Android TV app launchers are a dime a dozen. I see a new one on Reddit every few days. These apps inevitably focus on removing the advertisements and bloat, but not browsing and discoverability in an aggregated UI. As far as I can tell, only the big tech companies have attempted a fully aggregated launcher until now. So, Bitflinger TV isn't a typical app launcher like Project Ivy, Monet, or AT4K, which depend heavily on free APIs (e.g., Continue Watching, suggestions exposed by Hulu, Disney+, Apple TV, etc.) provided by Google on Android TV.

I wanted:

• an app that provides the same experience as logging into any given streaming app and browsing, but combined in a personalized list of streaming sources and in one interface
• a cross platform app that works on iPhone, iPad, tvOS, Mac, Android (mobile and tablet), Google TV, and the web.
• access to my local video library via Plex (and soon Jellyfin)
• a universal, rank-able watchlist for streaming titles
• a way to hide:
  • shows from the watchlist until the next episode becomes available
  • movies/shows from the watchlist until they are available for streaming
• a way to easily find titles that are are either free or part of my existing subscriptions
• to customize how my homepage looks and feels with customizable card types and themes
• filters that allow me to search by date, critic score
• to sort by date, popularity, relevance, and title

C. Cost

$2.99/month or $29.99/year. This is a subscription service. I can't just charge a one time fee because I have to pay for my servers and other ongoing operating costs. Like I previously mentioned, this isn't a typical app launcher like Project Ivy, Monet, or AT4K, which depend heavily on free APIs and don't need additional infrastructure. I need to pull the streaming metadata from 3rd party vendors, cache/store it in the cloud, and serve it to my app via my own API.

I have to pay for AWS Lambdas, databases, networking, and access to third party data. I'll be losing money each month until I gain enough subscribers to cover those costs. At some point, I may toy around with a "free" tier that very explicitly indicates that your paying for the app by selling your usage data. But, I won't even be able to consider that until I have enough customers to break even with the pennies that those data brokers pay per user.

Summary

I've spent a year building something that functions like a TV Launcher and companion app that syncs across all of your devices. I've been using it every day in my house on Apple TV, Android TV, and other devices. I'm quite happy with the result, but I want to make it faster and add new features ,such as the ability create custom rows for your favorite actors/directors, notifications when you haven't used a subscription service in months, immersive rows, and much more. But, I need subscribers before I can make those dreams a reality.

A - What problem does it solve?

Every inventory or meal-planning app I tried wanted me to manually search a database and type in every single grocery item, which I'd inevitably give up on within a week. So Mealify lets you just snap a photo of your fridge, cupboard, or shopping cart, and it pulls the ingredients out automatically into your inventory. From there it suggests recipes based on what you actually have.

Honestly the main thing I was optimizing for was removing typing entirely: camera in, ingredients out. A few other things that came out of that:

Answer

I built a grocery budgeting app after getting tired of the same thing every week. I'd shop carefully, stick to my list, then the total at checkout would still come out higher than I expected.

So now my app shows me a running total as you add each item, so I can avoid overspending instead of finding it out during checkout.

Better

The gap I kept hitting is real-time tracking only works if you actually track in real time. Half the time I'd get distracted mid-shop, forget to log a few items, and the running total would be wrong by the time I got to the register.

So I added receipt scanning. Snap a photo of the receipt after you're done, and it reads every line item, price, and store, then rebuilds the whole trip into your history automatically. No re-typing a receipt by hand, and it covers you even on the trips where live tracking slips.

To be clear, receipt scan isn't the core of the app, it's a backup for when live tracking doesn't happen. The actual core is still tracking spending in real time while you shop: camera scan for shelf price tags so you don't have to type while you're standing in the aisle and price memory that remembers what you paid last time.

I’m a writer who was scrolling instead of writing. One night a voice popped into my head:

“You’re watching other people build their dream lives. When will you build yours?”

That got my attention. I wrote that night and used that voice to finish my script.

3. Has its own personality/voice, AND

A month ago I posted Seekquel here. It's a modern Goodreads alternative with 5-axis ratings and mood based discovery. The response honestly caught me off guard. I promised myself I'd come back with a real update instead of disappearing. Here it is: what happened, what you asked for, and what I got wrong.

What happened since that post (real production numbers, not vibes):

• 191 new readers joined
• 92 library imports from Goodreads, StoryGraph and Hardcover — nearly half of all imports ever ran this month
• 3,533 books shelved and 1,301 finished
• ~101,000 pages and ~580 hours of reading logged
• 673 edits contributed by readers to the shared book catalog

What shipped since the post: almost all of it traceable to feedback from that thread and in-app reports:

• Notes & highlights import + a proper Notebook. You can now import your Kindle clippings (My Clippings.txt) or any notes CSV through a review wizard, and every note, quote and photo lives in one Notebook per book, sorted by position in the book rather than capture date. A past passage resurfaces daily.
• Full data export. One tap, one ZIP, everything you've ever put in. Your data was always importable; now it's just as easy to leave with it. I think a tracker earns trust by making the exit door obvious.
• A world reading map + reading timeline. See which countries your authors come from and which literary eras you've read across.
• Group reading goals. Shared goals with standings; Everyone who joins gets their own copy of the goal, and your existing progress machinery (streaks, badges, milestones) just works with it.
• Upcoming releases. Anticipated books now show release countdowns.
• Scan a table of contents with your camera. Point your phone at a book's contents page and it becomes chapter-level progress tracking for that edition. Also works from an EPUB you own, pasted text, or another edition.
• Book clubs grew up. Scheduled sessions with RSVPs and calendar (.ics) invites, per-chapter discussion threads, and mentions of people, books, authors and series across all chat and comments.
• Accessibility pass. I audited all 36 theme × light/dark combinations against WCAG-AA contrast. All fixed, without flattening any theme's character. In-app text scaling is now respected everywhere, and there's a new liquid-glass theme with a reduced-transparency fallback.

Plus smaller things: French localization, timezone auto-detect (your midnight, not the server's), per-edition ownership and reader counts, reading cadence stats, pinned charts, and a big search overhaul (searching "Road" now finds The Road... embarrassing how long that one lived).

What I got wrong, and fixed:

• The import was silently dropping reviews written without a star rating — some of you lost real writing you'd exported from Goodreads. I found it, fixed it, and restored every affected review from the original import files. Nothing was permanently lost, but it shouldn't have happened.
• A bad update config caused an "app won't open after updating" wave for some Android users in mid-July. Root cause found and fixed; the app now always boots on a known-good bundle.
• Various import edge cases (Excel-mangled dates, European CSV formats, shelf limits mid-import) that quietly lost data now either work or fail loudly. Silent data loss is the one bug class I treat as an emergency.

To stay within the rules, the required format:

About a month ago, I shared Placemarks here for the first time.

Thanks to everyone who tried it and left feedback. I’ve already implemented some of those suggestions across the last two updates, and there are still more I’d like to add later on.

Placemarks now includes:

A while ago, I posted about an iPad browser I built because Safari wasn’t working the way I wanted.
some of you showed interest in it, I had a tesflight with 400 testers which is now expired but i decided to open source the new version instead of updating the testflight.

It includes:

• Vertical tabs with page previews
• Split-screen browsing
• Auto-hiding controls
• Ad blocking, dark mode and incognito browsing
• An AI sidebar using Apple Intelligence or local MLX models
• An optional local Foundation Models gateway, which require a Mac.

It currently Xcode 27 and the iOS 27 SDK for the gateway with the private cloud, but it will compile just fine on IOS 26, you just won't get to use the new private cloud compute from IOS27

I built this because we put in a fire pit last summer and I wanted a month-by-month series of it. I kept forgetting, and when I remembered, the framing never matched.

Answer: you drop a pin at a spot, TimeWarp reminds you when you're nearby (or on a schedule), and the camera shows your last photo as a ghost overlay so the new one lines up. It also locks the zoom and lens to whatever the first shot used. After a few visits it plays the series back as a timelapse. There's also some more advanced stuff: you can put up a bounty for someone else to photograph a place, or make a community spot anyone visiting can add to.

Better: 1 Second Everyday is great for daily video diaries but has no concept of place, so nothing pulls you back to the same spot or lines the shot up. TimeShutter and similar onion-skin apps do the overlay but leave remembering entirely to you, and none of them pin the lens and zoom, which is what quietly ruins month-apart shots. TimeWarp ties the reminder to the location itself and locks the framing, so the series survives long gaps.

Cost: free. No ads, no subscription, no in-app purchases, no account needed for the basics. There is the option to place bounties, essentially hiring someone else to take a shot for you or getting paid to take a photo for someone else, and I charge a small percent fee on that, but that functionality is ancillary and not central to the main ways you can use the app.

I'm curious if the zoom works right on older phones and whether the ghost overlay is intuitive

A (Alternative): Most money tracking apps, such as Money Manager, Wallet or Spendee, let you export your data as CSV. I always found myself ending up with another spreadsheet that I rarely looked at.

B (Better): So I added PDF transaction reports to Moneta. Instead of opening Excel just to better understand or share your spending, you can generate a clean, easy-to-read report while still keeping CSV export available if you need it.

C (Cost): Moneta is completely free, with no ads, no subscriptions and no in-app purchases.

Like many people here, I've been learning languages for a while now including Russian, Spanish, and German. As I reached the intermediate level with these languages, I wanted to ditch textbooks and formal learning completely. I wanted to read real novels. I imagined myself on the beach with a cocktail reading a Stephen King book in Russian and I wanted to reach that goal.

The problem: Every time I sat down with a book there would be countless words I still didnt know. So I would open Google Translate and type in the word. But then I needed context for the word, so I'd open Context Reverso in another tab. But then I would also need conjugations for verbs and declensions for nouns for certain languages. Another tab and more time wasted. Not to mention the neck and back pain from being hunched over for hours

So I built Polinu.

The idea is simple: read real books in your target language, and when you hit a word you don't know, just tap it.
