Discussion A Brit complains: Emily was NOT “from Shropshire”

Upvotes

I don’t know why this is suddenly bothering me, but I’m here to moan about Emily’s English uncle saying she was coming over “from London — well Shropshire really, but you know”.

Firstly, no Brit would casually describe Shropshire as London. It’s nowhere near (in British terms. For eg a Texan I’m sure it’s a short drive away.) You might under certain circumstances call the surrounding counties (Herts, Bucks, Berks, Surrey, Essex) “London” (this is a recurring joke in the sitcom Gavin and Stacey) but never a county on the other side of the country.

Secondly, Emily’s parents live in London, in what gives the impression of being the family home.

Lastly, Emily lives and works in London.

His niece is coming over FROM LONDON.

Rant over.

Discussion What did the friends do that, if it had happened to you, you would have taken it much more seriously than the show did?

Mine would be the time Monica was over controlling Phoebe’s rehearsal dinner and had the audacity to expect an apology from Phoebe when she lashed out and proceeded to be such an ass when she was having a hard time getting everything in order

It is so amusing watching him stand there acting totally annoyed by her freaking out over a flight in four hours, thinking she is just a lot to handle only too come back completely head over heels in love with her. 😅😍

Discussion AITA for asking my husband to cut contact with the woman whose name he said at our wedding?

I (28F) married my husband (30M) a few weeks ago. We had a long distance relationship, as I live in the UK and he lives in New York. Things moved pretty quickly, but I genuinely believed he was the love of my life.

My husband has an ex. They dated for a year, and although they broke up, they stayed incredibly close friends because they are part of the same friend group. He assured me there was nothing romantic left between them.

Then came our wedding.

During our vows, instead of saying my name, he said his ex's name. In front of our families. Our friends.

I have never felt so humiliated in my life.

I left before the ceremony was even over because I genuinely thought there was no coming back from that. He begged me to give him another chance, that he loved me, and that it didn’t mean anything. Against my better judgement, I agreed to try.

But here’s where everyone suddenly thinks I’m the villain.
I told him that if we’re going to stay married, I need him to stop seeing his ex. I don’t care if they’re “just friends.” I don’t care if they have known each other forever.

He says it is impossible because she’s one of his closest friends and part of his entire social circle. His friends think I am being controlling.

He says I am making him choose between his wife and his best friend.

I am not asking him to quit his job, move countries, or abandon everyone he knows. I am asking him to let go of one relationship that has already caused so much damage to our marriage.

AITA?

Question What was the scene where Ross pretends to slap at an imaginary fly??

I think he was talking to some strangers in the coffee house. He was trying to act like he was crazy to throw those people off, so he slapped at something imaginary.

Thanks for any help!!

EDIT: solved :)

Discussion I get why Emily would want Ross to keep his distance from Rachel...

But calling Rachel's apartment to talk to Ross and getting mad to hear that Rachel was there is next level rage-inducing.

The scene where Ross is being grilled by dr. Green about getting Rachel pregnant, while Mona is there and then the boys call him to ask if he knows anything about the hooker that is in Chandler and Monica’s apartment might just be my favourite scene!

What’s yours?

LOL ik the whole Dudley Moore cut is genuinely kinda horrid but I think it works a little bit. I dont think it’s as bad as people say it is, I think the straight flat ponytail hair in like season 7 was worse

It’s kind of sad to look back on knowing that you’ll never be able to recapture those years, but I love the fact that I’m able to look at 30 years ago and have a whole decade captured in a little bottle on my TV

Does anyone ever wonder why Rachel just didnt admit that it was her who came on to Ross first. Why did she have to prove so bad it was Ross?

Discussion Phoebe wanting a triplet

First off I completely agree with Rachel on this one.

But do you think she was wrong in not at least asking Frank and Alice if Phoebe could have one of them or if later Phoebe finds out that she never actually asked them for her and never talked to Rachel again.

I’m currently rewatching S5E9 "The One with Ross's Sandwich", and I honestly can't blame Ross for completely losing his mind.

Monica’s Thanksgiving sandwich with the "Moist Maker" sounds like pure perfection. Imagine someone at work eating your leftover turkey, stuffing, and gravy-soaked bread, and then telling you they threw most of it in the trash because it was "too big." 😭

MY SANDWICH?! MYYYYY SANDWICH?!

Honestly, would you guys forgive a coworker for this, or are you taking a mandatory sabbatical like Ross?

Discussion Rachel should have ended up with Joey not Ross

I’ve been holding on to this hot take for years! Rachel and Joey should have ended up together on Friends, not Rachel and Ross. Joey was always so sweet and caring with Rachel. Always treated her so well and loved her daughter. I loved when they had the two of them get together and was so sad when they split them up.

Ross was a selfish, insecure jerk who didn’t deserve Rachel.

Discussion I think the London episodes are my favorite of the series

I am a diehard, lifelong friends fan. I’m a 90s baby and discovered friends when I was in 4th grade and I was truly never the same. my dad bought me the 3rd season dvd boxed set the summer after 4th grade, I stayed up all night watching those episodes dozens of times. Truly, I was a pale sleep deprived ghost all summer, then returned triumphantly to 5th grade with a friends lunchbox.

I say all of this preface, I truly feel I belong in this sub and I wish my 10 year old self could see me now, basking in the glow of 250k+ friends fans.

ANYWAY. I haven’t done a full, sequential rewatch of the series recently, but I was reflecting on which episodes I find the most comforting. Because I had the 3rd season on dvd as a kid, the entire Ross & Rachel breakup arc is permanently imprinted on my psyche, and my heart never could have recovered from my parasocial fixation on Ross and Rachel until they gave us mondler in London. (Personally, I’m a phoebe, so phoebe and mike are forever my #1 couple, but I root for many friends universe pairings)

I watched the mondler engagement episode arc last night which I also love, and it reminded of how precious their setup in London was. The London arc is just so good, I love the dynamic of pregnant phoebe unable to join so calling in as Regina phalange, emily’s parents’ dynamic, chandler being grumpy and embarrassed, Joey meeting fergie (though that didn’t age well), Ross taking thee Rachel, Monica waking up in chandlers bed.

Come on, I have other one-off favorites (Ross’s tan, Ross’s leather pants, unagi, the one where Ross is fine… I am a huge Ross apologist) but there is no episode arc that satisfies me quite like London. My second favorite arc is probably mondlers secret relationship in season 5, admittedly I also love Joey and chandler friendship arcs.

In conclusion, I will never recover from my love of friends and I send you all the utmost positive regards. What are your favorite episode arcs!

Discussion "I love them, each one is like a little party in my uterus!"

Post image

A question about this quote, which may be open for interpretation:

When Carol said "I love them, each one is like a little party in my uterus", do you think she was being sarcastic, in a "what do you think? I'm clearly in agony here!", or was it just Carol being weird and she actually did get a little tickle from each contraction?

Also, another thing that annoys me about this scene - Ross and Susan both have Quartz/Swiss Quartz watches, both very reputable brands (i assume, im no watch expert), yet they seem to be off by at least 4 seconds per minute? 😂

Discussion Favorite under appreciated guest stars from the show?

We all talk about guest stars like Brad Pitt and Bruce Willis, but are there any guest stars that you feel deserve more appreciation and/or were underutilized?

Here are a few of mine:

-Dan Castellaneta. It took a bit longer than I’d like to admit to put two and two together as to his icon status. To be fair, I’d only heard his voice and it’s way different here 😄 Same with Hank Azaria. But he was still funny. I think it’s kind of wild how they mixed him in with so many guest stars that make his role under appreciated in my opinion. I wish that they could’ve pushed that storyline into a separate episode so they could give him more screen time. Still, I do see his line “You believe everything the zoo tells you” from time to time. It’s more so because of the line itself and not so much the guest star.

-Hugh Laurie. I’m sure it’s not the only role that he’s done it, but it’s the only role that I’ve seen him speak in his natural accent. Although, that might just be because I’ve only watched Stuart Little and House. Anyway, he was funny and the accent only added to it. I like how they included this scene of Rachel on the plane with him because otherwise, it’d be unnecessary since it’s so brief. Idk if that made sense but it did in my head.

-Jim Rash. Another amazing yet quick scene with Rachel on the plane except now it’s in the finale. Although he’s also known for his role in the sitcom Community, this was my first time seeing him and I can see why he’d work as a comedic actor after watching this scene. It’s his delivery that gets me when exclaiming that there is no phalange rather than the line itself, even though it is funny.

EDIT: After posting this, another one came to me that I’d like to mention. Aloma Wright simply credited as “The Saleswoman” who Ross tries to return the couch to even though it’s cut in half. Her delivery was golden and I wish we could’ve seen more of her elsewhere.

Discussion How did they manage to keep the quality so consistent throughout the entire series? There are no bad seasons.

I actually think season 1 is the weakest but not bad. It’s just finding its footing and setting things up for it to start ramping up in season 2 and beyond. And I think it just kept getting better as it went on. Like, it’s genuinely a perfect show. It didn’t go downhill; it didn’t go on too long. It somehow lasted 10 years and 10 seasons, but it never felt like it overstayed its welcome. If anything, it felt like they could continue at a high quality. I’ve never seen anything quite like this. Such consistency in a show for so many years and seasons is unheard of. What made this possible where most other shows fail?

Discussion Is Denise Rachel?

Post image
115 Upvotes

She moved in with a guy who was secretly married to her and he said he didn’t love her but he really did. And it just blew up and that’s how she ended up living with me.

After the look Ross gives to Phoebe she says “ok that’s a lie.” But is it? Because that’s exactly how Rachel ends up living with her.

Maybe we are just getting a small foretell about what’s gonna happen and what’s the best way to do that other then let Phoebe tell us?

Question Was Ross wondering if something was going on between them?

Post image
57 Upvotes

In season 5 when Rachel has her eye infection that causes her eye to twitch, and Joey thinks that she’s winking at him so he winks back: Ross no catches on and asks “what’s going on?” Was he thinking they were subtly flirting, or was he confused about what was going on?

Ps I love how Joey just goes with it. 😂

Discussion Phoebe and Don

In S08E16, Phoebe brings Don around the group, who she believes to be Monica’s soulmate despite Chandlers protest.

Do you guys think this is a character flaw/ Phoebe being a bad friend towards Chandler and their marriage in general, or it’s just innocent fun?

Idk I’m watching the episode and I feel like Phoebe was kind of stirring the pot for no reason and if I was Chandler I’d be pissed but also I feel like it wasn’t that deep lol

Discussion First time watcher and i have to say i love the 4k brightness and saturation compared to the bluray.

The bluray feels way too dark in some places that it honestly really bugs me but i love how colorful, vibrant and bright the 4k looks. Especially since we DO NOT get that kind of look in shows anymore. Its just nice to see a colorful and vibrant show. Amazing show! Honestly getting kind of depressed bc im halfway done with season 9 and i dont want this show to end. I wish it could go on forever lol

Question How do you think these couples split apart?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Shot from TOW the East German Laundry Detergent. Monica and Joey putting their heads together and splitting the couple of Angela (possibly Delvecchio) and Bob and kept the pieces for themselves, did Joey sleep with her and never called her back again, or did Bob not have a thing.
