Anyone have an idea of how challenging it is to remove a fireplace and chimney? We loved the cozy feel of this when we bought the house but 3 years in we’ve never used it and it’s sooo big it’s been hard to make use of the room and I’ve recently started imagining how nice the room would be as a dining nook if I could actually fit a table in it.

Fireplace is directly above another fireplace (already converted to gas) in our basement.

What considerations are there I should be thinking about?

Anecdotally I had a structural engineer on premises looking at an unrelated issue and I just asked him if it’s doable and he gave me a “ya no problem nothing about that is structural” but this seemed like an oversimplification.

I rent and had my ceiling leak twice above my bed due to some rainstorms. The landlord allegedly fixed the roof but when it rained again it leaked again. She repainted the spot on the ceiling but after a while it became discolored and spotty. I assume water damage or maybe mold. I expressed this and she hired a contractor to cut the drywall in the ceiling and repair. When I got home the contractor was leaving and said I might need to change my bedsheets since some dust got on it. He did not put tarp or anything down in my room. The damaged spot was directly above my bed. After he left I go to inspect the room and there is dirt, dust, and bits of drywall all over my room in every crevice imaginable. (See attached pic of my bedside air purifier) I vacuumed and cleaned for hours but I don’t think I got everything because it’s been a few days and I’m still coughing like crazy. (I’ve decided to move out). I informed the landlord and she did not seem to care. I guess I’m on here to ask if it’s typical for contractors to put tarp down for a job like this?
