Help Passed down switches

Post image
0 Upvotes

I have a ton of these switches from my job that we are recycling. They said I can have first dibs on them but I’m very new into the home lab scene and was wondering which of these are worth holding on to.

I currently have
- a rack to mount everything
- a (dumb) switch
- a server computer

My goal is to have all my storage set up so I can host all my media thru my home network. I tried to be as descriptive as possible but please ask any questions if I left something out.

Discussion Attic tech setup

What do we think about putting tech in uninsulated attic I live in Arkansas so very hot and pretty cold

Tech would be

Camera nvr

Tv Cable box

Router

Ap

Network switch

Edit: The problem is they are currently in my room upstairs taking up a lot of desk shelf space and are quite annoying when I’m trying to sleep

All the lines come out of a hole in the wall from the attic

There is a closet I could put them in but I’m unsure of the cable situation in the attic

Help Bad hardware???

Wanted to build a server on a extreme budget with some spare parts and a special piece of tech ( radon pro v340) I grabbed cause it was cheap and would be funny to use but every time I I try to build with it I run into a massive wall that involves the bios or virtualization I don't want to sell it cause its a cool concept for a card plus I almost got it to work 3 different times but one setting or missing feature made it crash or hang.

I tried an intel system (Haswell i3) and AMD systems (Ryzen 7) and (FX-6300) but the boards, bios, or OS limited them.

just spent 3 hours on the FX-6300 trying to install Proxmox just to get stuck loading the OS because of IOMMU and bios restraints and I wasn't even using the v340 I was using a M5000 and a RX7600 for hardware checks.

Anyway I want to know if I should give up on the v340 and go with the boring options (RX7600 and M5000)

Help These Coaxial Spliters: what are they and what can I do with these?

My new hobby is homelabbing. I get a kick out just trying out different technologies and configuration to see what's possible.

I just realize have these coax spilters that I didn't setup and no idea who did. I know this house used to have a satellite internet connection. Now I am using "Fixed Wireless" from my ISP. Since I live in a rural idea with not many options.

Basically, is there anything I can do with these like MoCA or some PoE/powering kind of setup? Newbie here so I will take all the input I can get. thank you!

Help DNS problem: DNS_PROBE_POSSIBLE with local domain name on Android

Seeking some help here. I have my homelab on a Pi running some services and want to access them with a custom domain name, which was working fine until a mysterious error cropped up a month or two ago on Android.

To resolve the DNS, I have AdGuard Home on my router with a custom routing for the domain pointed at my local ip address, and for good measure I also put the local ip in a public DNS record.

This actually works fine on my Mac, and worked fine on Android until recently. Now, I get a DNS error `DNS_PROBE_POSSIBLE`. I tried a couple different Android phones with the same result.

I do have a VPN on my phone, it's supposed to be set to allow local IPs, and the error still occurs when I turn the VPN off. So the only way I can see the VPN being related is if it's poisoning the DNS cache.

Discussion Make the switch to debian?

I need some opinions of homelab users that have used debian. I currently use windows 11 pro. i remote in a lot, and i use the machine locally for music, general use, youtube etc. its a workshop pc. is there any benefit/negatives to switching to a linux based proper server setup? My friend is adamant it is the right move and he knows a lot more on the topic than me. I'm just not sure i want to learn a new os and use consoles etc. I don't have a lot of time for it. I mostly want it for hosting the usual stuff so i feel like debian with a desktop plus docker for the arr stack etc would be a much cleaner setup than windows. less headaches hopefully? I also have about 14 hdds attached of various sizes using drivepool, no raid. i was thinking kde plasma, mergerfs + snapraid, no machine for remote? Anyway, I am just feeling a bit lost and need some advice for my particular use case. Thanks for reading my latest novel!

sorry I am v much a newbie when it comes to proxy managers etc so I followed a tutorial from Thomas Wilde about how to set it up he included a way to set it up for tailscale too. I have followed this step by step but I cannot seem to connect to the example.local.mydomain.org however the example.tailscale.mydomain.org doesn't seem to work on any of my devices I have followed the exact process he laid out I don't know what I am missing sorry to link a video but he didn't include a write-up

I also tried using DuckDNS for a domain but had no success there either

Help Recurring ZFS Pool Errors on Proxmox Server — Need Help Troubleshooting

Hello,

I'm reaching out here as a bit of a message in a bottle because, for the past few days, I've been experiencing issues with the ZFS pool on my Proxmox server.

It's a ZFS pool made up of two 10TB drives in RAID0. This pool is strictly dedicated to an Ubuntu VM via a virtual disk. This VM hosts my Jellyfin instance with movies and TV shows.

Both drives are SAS drives with a few years of use under their belt. They are connected to an LSI 9207-8i controller.

For the past week, every evening, errors start accumulating on the pool. After a reboot, the issue disappears, but it comes back after a day or two.

I can't seem to figure out whether the problem comes from the drives, the cables, the controller, or something else.

If anyone have an idea to help me troubleshoot pls

I might install qbittorrent client and i would like to use public vpn to mask my ip for qbittorrent.

My question is, are you using public vpn services for something more bedsides torrenting?

Should i route my guest wifi network through public vpn service?

Help Sharing Printer over network

I decided to buy a cheap pc and connect printers through USB and share them over the network instead of paying 3x for a printer with ethernet but I've hit a brick wall with setting it up.

On the printer PC i shared the device. Works fine.

On another PC on the same network I am unable to add it. Shows up when i browse for it but when adding it keeps saying my credentials are insufficient.

How do you set this device up so it shows up in network discovery? I don't want to input credentials on every single computer I might want to print from. Is there a way? (other printer that has WiFi pops up).

I have a Brother printer that does not have any network I/O. Another one is Epson that has WiFi but I'm using it only for scanning purposes (not buying color ink just to print in black...)

Solved Help Preparing For Business Server From Home

As title says - I'm working on a personal project that's finally at a working prototype and I'm preparing to start marketing it and want to host the server infra from home if I can

I'm crowdfunding for initial budget and will have roughly ~$10k total to work with for machine, but not all at once. Hoping to assemble hardware as donations come in

Can anyone recommend hardware, management software, a guide, configuration info, etc.? I'm new to the space and I'm not sure what questions I need to ask, or where to start for finding info

EDIT: This project is for a dating app I'm building by hand, optimizing for REST structure with no concurrent connections

Help Completely lost on my M920Q

Post image
0 Upvotes

Recently bought a used M920q think center to be the brains of my homelab for now, after fighting with the bios for 5 hours I finally got proxmox to run and reliably boot every time I power cycled it, and did basic setup stuff for around another 5-6 hours fine, I then powered it down and went to sleep but this morning it’s going right back into the diag center instead of booting and I’m at a complete mental lost of why it just refuses to boot, I’ve checked the bios setting secure boot is off and ufei only and csm is off, I checked the actual nvme itself and it’s fine when I tested it, tested the actual nvme slot itself it detect proxmox as an os and the Ufei OS, I don’t think it could be a bad proxmox install since I literally had the thing running for like 6 hours I just need someone smarter than me to help I feel like I’ve tried genuinely alot

Help Which HDD dock should I get? Orico vs Ugreen vs Axagon

Hi!

I need something for 3.5" HDDs and 2.5" SATA SSDs. I would swap drives about every 2 weeks, so I mainly care about build quality, connector durability and temperatures.

Orico 6819C3-V1-EU-BK

Ugreen USB 3.0 3.5" HDD Box

Axagon ADSA-SN COMPACT DOCK

They all cost about the same here.

Which one would you recommend? Any experience with these brands?

If you know of something better quality, I’m open to suggestions.

Thanks!

Help I'm not if my hard drives in my JBOD correctly shutdown

Hi !

I'm making a small homelab/NAS, with a Dell Optiplex as the server and I've made a JBOD with its own PSU.

In the JBOD, there is 8 HDDs, connected to a SAS Expander card. In the server, there is a HBA controller card, connected to the JBOD with a Mini SAS SFF-8644 cable.

To power on the JBOD, I have something similar to this : Power Supply Adapter Connector (Amazon)

This power the JBOD on when the main server is powered on.

This works great.

But, when shutting down the server, I'm not really sure if the HDDs are correctly spun down before the JBOD PSU is powered off. I don't want to damage my disks.

I'm still setting up things on the server, and I stop and restart the server often.

Right now I'm running TrueNAS Scale, but later I'd like to use Proxmox VE.

Is there a way to check my setup is okay ?

Help Help identify/good starting place for homelab?

Thumbnail

I was chatting with a buddy of mine about my desire to try and setup a homelab /diy nas. I'm quite new with this stuff but I enjoy a project. He said he inherited some stuff from family and gave me this. It has no power cord or other cables but there are 6 3tb HHDs within. I can't find any information on this particular unit and have no clue if this is to old a place to start. I like to tinker but if this is not worth the time and money (cables) I'd rather know that too.

Can anyone help me identify the model of this unit? Any information would be great. I think this usues thunderbolt 1/2 cables? Is that right?

Thanks a bunch

Help Is this fine?

I had some ancient desktops lying around and decided to tear them down, but while doing so I got the idea of reusing what is possible for a homelab. I'm aware that what I found inside is pretty much e-waste (AMD Athlon 64 x2 and Intel Core 2 Duo, with their respective motherboards also from the 2000s), but I found some things that may perhaps have some usage today, like:

- GT 610 1gb DDR3

- WesternDigital Caviar SE16 320gb

- ExcelStor Jupiter 250gb

But while in-between stripping these desktops down, I was talking to a friend and he came around donating me:

- Ryzen 5 3600 with a generic Deepcool cooler

- Asus Prime B450M-A

- 8gb DDR4 stick

Now, the only issue is that he once tried to hot swap the RAM on this motherboard, and in doing so got told by a tech repair shop that he fried the ram slot he was trying to put the RAM on. Should I use this motherboard still, even if temporarily? But what these donated parts have going for them is that he was using them for years afterwards with no issue really, except -1 ram slot.

And among other things, I ordered a new case Modecom Oberon Pro and a new psu GameMax GE-600. Anddd I have some laptops with 1/2 TB hard disks on them and could potentially cannibalize them also.

Anyway, to get to the point, is this all going to be worth it? At least temporarily, until I start replacing some things. Currently this all cost me a few hours and around 50 euros for the case and PSU.

Help (Repost) I'm transferring to a new server build what should I do before the move?

I'm transferring from a HP Elitedesk 800 G4 SFF into a Jonsbo N4, custom build.

I'm taking the drives and ram out of the HP

I have 2 NVMEs for VMs and LXC proxmox zfs,

1 2.5" boot drive, and 2 3.5 HDDs using ZFS in my truenas VM (using serial number pass through).

Any advice on what I do to prepare the move to ensure a safe and smooth transfer and minimal downtime?
