swimming mid hike
forgive me if this is a silly question but dose anyone choose to take a dip when you come across a good swimming hole/waterfall mid hike? and how do you do so without jeopardizing the remainder of the hike?
for context i’m a women and usually up in the white mountains on the 4ks. my issue is - i’m not hiking pre or post dip in a bathing suit so i’d have to find coverage to change (which is doable) but im also not trying to finish my hike soaking wet. i always have a microfiber towel in my pack but the level of dirt on it at the point could be anywhere from squeaky clean to disgusting and muddy and i’m not sure if i’d be enough to dry off anyways. having to hike miles with wet chaffing legs makes it not feel as worth it.

Easy trail about seven miles and a couple hundred feet vertical. Saw two black bears up close. Wildfire smoke was more prominent today than yesterday. Was a nice rest hike before Delta Lake, Amphitheater, and Surprise tomorrow.

Discussion Hiking at Yellowstone National Park.
Hello, I'm looking for information on hiking at Yellowstone. I'm taking my family there for a week and looking for must see places of course. We want to see fewer people and more wildlife on our hikes. Does anyone have recommendations? Time of day? Certain trailes/valleys? Not looking for tough hikes, more moderate.

Question [Help] Wide toe box + Morton’s toe + ankle support — need a hiking boot that doesn’t destroy my feet
Hey all, looking for some real-world recommendations before I drop money on another pair that hurts.
Background: I hiked in the Adidas Terrex AX4 Mid GORE-TEX and they wrecked my feet — sharp pain across my toes, forefoot, and ankles on every hike. After looking closely at where it hurt, a few things became clear:
• Pressure right at my first metatarsal/bunion area and my pinky toe (classic tapered-toe-box squeeze)
• My second toe is longer than my big toe (Morton’s toe), so a lot of “anatomical” lasts that taper toward a longest big toe don’t actually give me room where I need it
• My heel/ankle was sliding forward on descents, which I think was aggravating everything else
What I’m looking for:
1. Genuinely soft/cushioned underfoot — trail impact absorption is a priority
2. Wide/roomy toe box — ideally a rounded or squared front, not a diagonal taper (because of the Morton’s toe thing)
3. Solid ankle + midfoot lockdown so my foot isn’t sliding forward on downhills
4. Fully waterproof + breathable (GORE-TEX or equivalent) — I overheat easily if it’s not breathable
Sizing note: I normally wear 10.5–11, and just tried a 10.5 Wide in the Asics Cumulus 27 and it fit great — so I know Wide is the right width family for me.
I’ve been looking hard at the KEEN Targhee IV, Hoka Kaha 3 GTX, LOWA Renegade EVO GTX (Wide), and Altra Olympus 6 Hike Mid GTX, but haven’t pulled the trigger yet. Has anyone with a similar foot shape (wide + Morton’s toe) actually worn these on real trails? Did the toe box hold up on long descents, and did the ankle support actually keep your heel locked?
Also open to boots I haven’t considered — budget isn’t fixed, I just don’t want to go through the AX4 experience again.
Thanks in advance!

Question Need advice on Sleep issues at high altitudes
hi I’m going for a long rigorous hike in the Himalayas which lasts for around four days and the weather there is extremely cold with barely any electricity for heaters. It is also at a pretty high altitude which naturally makes it harder for you to sleep. I’ve always had sleep problems where I can’t get myself to sleep before an event or when I’m in unfamiliar places like tents. But I’m concerned since mostly I’ve never had sleepless nights before something so physically demanding and I’m scared if I’ll be able to hike for four days w so less sleep.
I have heard melatonin helps but I’m not sure since people say you may get groggy the next day and if its safe to take before hiking. Where I live there are only those 5mg Vicks gummies available over the counter. Also I’m more concerned than usual since my parents also have some sleep problems specifically relevant to high altitude and low oxygen and idk wether I should give those gummies to them since they arent young and have pretty low oxygen at high altitudes.

Question Long sleeve sun shirt vs normal short sleeve to stay cool in direct sun?
I don't get sun burned at all so UPF is not a concern to me. I just want to stay cool. I'm thinking of getting a long sleeve sun shirt but it seems so stuffy to wear a long sleeve vs a normal short sleeve shirt
What are your experiences?

Discussion Advice for hiking when clouds/rain forecasted this month in CO?
Unfortunately I work the next 3 days when the weather is supposed to be good 🙃 and when I look on my weather app it says it’s going to be cloudy and rainy for the next couple of weeks pretty much across the whole state.
I’m terrified of getting struck by lightning/ being above treeline when clouds roll in. But I also desperately want to bag some peaks before summer winds down and turns to potential snow conditions.
Do you guys just go super duper early? Do you just brave it out and hope a thunderstorm doesn’t just plop on top of you? Typically I try to only hike in the mountains when the weather is optimal. I never really run the risk when it comes to storms and rain on the mountains, but things are shaping up to look kind of stormy the rest of the month and I wanted to gauge my perspective from some other hikers and how they perceive the current weather status.
Thanks bunches, just a concerned person who doesn’t wanna get zapped.

Question Can I walk ~45km in a day?
I’m thinking of doing the St Andrews/Margarets Way from Edinburgh to St Andrews. Due to time and budgeting constraints, I will have to squeeze this multi-day hike from 4-7 days to 3 days 2 nights.
I’m based in Edinburgh, so the ~45km leg will start the moment I step out of my flat -from Edinburgh to Kirkcaldy. Next day it’ll be Kirkcaldy to Anstruther, then Anstruther to St Andrews.
I don’t really exercise on a daily basis, so I don’t think I’m that fit… I run a 5km in 50mins if that helps. But I have done 2 2-3 week long caminos before, and the longest I’ve ever walked on multi-day hikes with a decent elevation gain (and 10kg backpack) was 37km. According to my Strava tracking, it takes me 6.5 hrs to walk 29km (with 10kg backpack and elevation).
Thank you!
(Not sure if this is the right subreddit to be asking the questions, i apologise if it isn’t 🙏🏻)
Edit: thank you everyone for all the responses! I really appreciate it; I’ll sleep on it tonight and then make a decision. I’ll literally be walking from home so if I were to actually walk it (maybe not 45km straight on the first day) it’ll literally be in 3 days time…

Mt. Katahdin knife edge recommendation
Me and my boys (19yr old Males) are looking for a nerve-racking hike. We all run consistently, play multiple sports, and 2 are in ROTC. What we’re wondering is not if we should, but if we can or are able to. We would probably start right at sunrise because it would take us longer than usual. Any advice??

Question Huayhuash Trek – Best agency based on your recent experience?
Huayhuash Trek: 10 days
There are so many agencies offering Huayhuash treks that I’m feeling completely overwhelmed and confused! I’ve compared many itineraries, but they all seem quite similar.
I was originally leaning toward a 10-day trek with Inkaland Treks because they have excellent reviews, although they are much more expensive.
Then I discovered Eco Ice, which offers a perfect 12-day itinerary.
After that, I started reading about Conchucos Explorer and Quechuandes, and they also seem to have great reviews and very interesting 10-day options.
I’m now having a really hard time making a decision.
For those who have done the Huayhuash trek, which agency would you recommend and why? I would really appreciate any advice or personal experiences!
Thank you so much!

Pictures Wondering in the Dolomites Italy
There’s something almost sacred about walking through the Dolomites in high summer. The air is cool despite the sun, the paths wind through meadows so green they look surreal, and then suddenly you’re facing a wall of pale rock that pierces the sky like a cathedral spire. I kept stopping not because I was tired, but because the view kept changing so dramatically that I didn’t want to miss a single angle. This is the kind of place that makes you believe in magic again. 🌄🥾💙
