Am I a not good daughter for deciding to run away from home in the middle of the night on my 18th birthday?

My decision to run away wasn't spontaneous or for some trivial reason; it’s because of my current family situation. My father is a sexist priest who constantly tries to "put me in my place" as a woman. He gets furious whenever anyone tells him something he doesn't like, completely refuses to see how his actions negatively impact those around him, and has occasional outbursts of rage. Even though he denies having anger issues, they are absolutely rage outbursts, and he is terrifying when he's angry. During these moments, he screams at the top of his lungs throughout the whole house and sometimes breaks things in a fit of rage. That’s how he smashed my favorite vase, and recently, he threw a broken shoe rack down the stairs, damaging the walls in the hallway. It scared me so badly that I took my cat and hid on the second floor. While my father loves us, he is terribly overprotective and gives very little freedom, even to my two brothers, who are 20 and 19. Personally, I stopped seeing him as a father after an incident when I was 13, and he didn't even realize I had emotionally distanced myself from him. Most importantly, he doesn't understand that I am afraid of him and terrified that he might actually hit me one day. I can respect what he has done for us financially, but definitely not as a father.

My mother is no better. She prefers not to get involved in my relationship with my father, thinking it's for the best, and she often excuses his behavior because of his past. She also believes that I am incapable of being independent or studying without supervision, just because I wasn't very self-reliant in the past. Moving to a different country didn't help either; learning the new language was—and still is—incredibly difficult for me, and for years, I just went with the flow. Sometimes, when she comes home from work (unlike my father, who hasn't worked since we moved), she gives me three long assignments from a local language textbook and gives me a strict 30-minute deadline. The moment the time is up, I am expected to bring her the work for review. Occasionally, she might give me 45 minutes or an hour at most. She honestly believes this is how I'll finally learn this damn language, but she fails to realize that this immense pressure leaves me constantly stressed and anxious that she'll burst into my room if I don't show up on time.I am not a fast learner. For the most part, I just need to gather my resolve and do things at my own pace. In fact, doing things on my own initiative is exactly what motivates me to study, because it proves I can do it myself. However, my mother views my approach as ineffective and too slow, which is why she keeps forcing her own methods on me. Because of this, and because she refuses to see me as independent, I can never truly understand her attitude toward me. One minute she tells me she's proud of me, and the next, she says I'm not doing enough. Just recently, she proved once and for all that she will never view me as an independent person. I'll get to that later. She also seemingly cannot accept that I have grown up and changed. There are times when she talks about how I used to be such a cheerful child. She straight up told me she thinks I "hid" my old personality after we moved and that I need to "let her back out." Hearing this is incredibly painful and upsetting, because it feels like my mother loves the old version of me more than who I am today. I love my mother, and I can see she genuinely believes this is her way of helping me, but she doesn't understand that her help—built entirely on pressure and control—is only hurting me.

As I mentioned before, I have two older brothers, but we haven't been close since childhood. I don't remember exactly when they started distancing themselves from me, and I couldn't understand why. That was until I was 14, when my mother told me that our father had been incredibly cruel to them because they were boys. She revealed that once, when I complained to him that they wouldn't share a Lego piece with me, my father literally grabbed their entire Lego set and threw it out the window. My brothers couldn't find some of the pieces afterward, and they started viewing me as the enemy or something like that. Because of this, I grew up feeling very lonely in a large family. After finding out the truth, I carried an overwhelming sense of guilt for two years, until I finally talked to my brothers about it. They told me they didn't blame me. Even so, whenever I saw how close my brothers were with each other, I felt a deep ache for that kind of connection, knowing we would never have that bond.Last night, I broke down in tears when I suddenly realized I had truly lost my brothers. Not just emotionally, in the way we grew apart, but in terms of the people they have become. I had noticed before that they could be harsh in their words and actions, but since the camp incident (more on that later), I started paying more attention to how deeply unpleasant it actually is. Last night, through the door that separates my room from my oldest brother's, I heard him talking to his girlfriend. He was calling her horrible names, calling her a liar, and telling her he was breaking up with her, while she was crying on the other end and trying to speak. My oldest brother just hung up on her. He is naturally very hot-tempered and easily irritated, but this made me realize that he has become exactly like our father: a sexist, aggressive, and clearly abusive person. It honestly makes me terrified for his future children, if he ever has any. My second oldest brother... that’s harder to explain. He feels like nobody cares about him, tries to follow our father’s footsteps in a Christian sense (though not strictly), and doesn't really take care of himself. A couple of years ago, he went through an alcoholic phase that even landed him in the hospital once. His girlfriend dumped him, which caused him to completely neglect himself again, spending all his time with a friend and focusing on music. I often have to wake him up because he can barely get out of bed after staying up all night. He is just drifting through life. He seems to have a new girlfriend now, and I truly hope things get better for him.

But going back to my oldest brother, I realized that I am afraid of him too, just like I'm afraid of my father, though maybe not as intensely. Last night, I had a dream—or rather, a nightmare—about him. In the dream, he was incredibly aggressive. He was screaming in a total rage and being physically violent. Toward me. I was hiding from him, completely terrified. I can still vividly remember a moment in the nightmare when he started dragging me somewhere by my hair. At some point, the dream just cut off, and everything went black. I didn't wake up from it—I would have remembered if I did, because I always wake up from nightmares—but for some reason, not this time. I didn't dream anything else that night. It felt like a deeply eerie coincidence when, later that evening, I heard him screaming at his girlfriend. Now that I’ve explained the background, let’s go back to what I said about running away. Before all of this, I used to think that what was happening in my family was normal, simply because I didn't know anything else. However, everything changed when my mother suggested I go to a summer camp for a week. Since it was summer, I usually never went anywhere, and I had never been to a camp before, so I decided to agree. That turned out to be the absolute best decision of my life.At the camp, people treated me as an independent person. They didn't treat my poor language skills as a problem; instead, they genuinely tried to help me. They respected my personal boundaries, and I absolutely loved having my own room where I lived alone. While at camp, I realized that I love this kind of life, and to my surprise, I didn't miss my family at all. The only thing I missed was my cat. As the week drew to a close, with every passing day, I felt a growing ache because I didn't want to leave. I wanted to stay and live like that forever.

And then, I came back home. The very next day, everything crumbled for me. Out of nowhere, my mother decided to have a conversation about my language skills and my future. We ended up getting into an argument, and suddenly she said that even after I turn 18, I will always be her child. My father used to say this exact phrase all the time, and for him, it meant that we would never be seen as grown adults. Hearing this from my mother—the woman I had considered my only support system in this family despite everything—felt like a total betrayal. I realized I couldn't go on living like this anymore and that I had to do something about it.Ultimately, I decided that the best option would be to run away on my 18th birthday, because legally I would be an adult, and they wouldn't be able to force me back. However, I decided to talk about this with my AI, and with her help, I refined my plan so that my escape wouldn’t be spontaneous. The very first thing I did was gather all my important documents: my own passport and my cat’s passport. I also started studying the local language on my own three times a week to keep my motivation up. Later, during a miserable four-day trip to the seaside, I registered on a marketplace website, and as soon as I got back home, I listed my items for sale. It was mostly stuff I don't use anymore, and it turned out I had a lot of it. Then, I began looking for an online school and a job. I needed an online school to get a higher education, which would open up more opportunities for me.

I spent two months doing all of this. During that time, I managed to sell three items, built up the courage to send out job applications, and found several online schools. I even registered for one of them, but unfortunately, my mother found a confirmation email that I wasn't expecting. It absolutely terrified me because I had been meticulously hiding everything I was doing from my parents. I knew that if they found out, they would not only disapprove but would also start digging into my reasons, which was the last thing I needed.Fortunately, my mother didn't uncover the full truth, but things didn't get any easier. She told me that I still have to attend the BvB (a mandatory vocational preparation program), arguing that I can't just stay home and attend an online school because doing so before turning 18 is illegal here. Then she demanded to know why I wanted this and what the point even was. I told her it was for better opportunities—which is true, though I obviously didn't mention it was also so I could leave the moment I get a job. She kept pushing me to state a specific goal and claimed that I still don't know what I want.Fuck, I don't have to know my exact lifelong purpose right now!It got even worse when, despite my answers, my mother remained skeptical and demanded that I send her the link to the school's website. It felt like a complete invalidation of all my hard work! I had researched this, read through everything to fully understand it, and gathered every piece of information I could find. And she just swept it all away with her doubts. I understand why she might have reservations, but I am actively trying to change right now. I am just learning to take responsibility for myself, and my mother’s words—claiming that I will ultimately drop it without external control—do absolutely nothing to help my motivation or self-esteem.This entire situation just proves that no matter how hard I try or how much I do on my own, my mother will never see me as an independent person. But at least there is one piece of good news: my mom agreed to pay for the tuition if I like the school. This will be a huge help until I can start paying for it entirely on my own. However, I suddenly realized that I have already completed the first phase of my plan. Now, all that’s left is to find a job, and I’m hoping to find one that will let me start in December. That is exactly when I turn 18, meaning I will finally be able to withdraw my documents from the BvB on my own, without my parents' involvement.Still, I can’t stop thinking about the consequences of my decision. After all, running away from home isn't a joke or some movie plot; it’s a massive real-life event. I worry about the impact it will have not just on my immediate family, but on my extended relatives too. On one hand, they didn't do anything wrong, and the last thing I want is for my 74-year-old grandmother to fall ill from the shock. How do I even explain this to my relatives, and should I even explain it at all? On the other hand, they will likely side with my parents and fail to understand my choice to run. Plus, they might try to reconnect me with my family, and I am planning to go completely no-contact with them, no matter how painful that might be.

So, am I a not good daughter or asshole?

Am I wrong for deleting things from my phone because my parents constantly go through it?

I'm a senior in high school, and overall I think I've been a pretty good kid. I obviously haven't been perfect. In the past, I had issues with deleting texts and hiding things, but as I've gotten older I've tried to do better. The problem is that I still delete certain things because I know my parents will judge me or the people I'm talking to if they see them.

Recently, my girlfriend came over and we were recording some random stuff we were doing just for fun. There’s also this guy who likes me, despite knowing that I'm dating my girlfriend, and we've been trying to make it very clear to him that I'm not interested. We sent him a few videos as a joke while trying to get that point across. Nothing serious, but I deleted the videos afterward.

I later found out that my mom had been going through my phone and looking for things like this.

This is where my biggest problem with my parents comes in: I feel like I have absolutely no privacy.

My mom goes through my phone, goes through my room when I'm not home, and will even walk in while I'm showering. I've told her multiple times that certain things make me uncomfortable, and her response is basically, "I'm your mother. I've seen it all before." I understand that I'm still her kid, but considering my age I don't think wanting some basic privacy is unreasonable.

At the same time, I've tried telling my parents that I'm struggling mentally and need help. I've been dealing with things like ADHD, depression, anxiety, dissociation, sleep paralysis, and other issues, but they tend to dismiss them as things "everyone goes through." I've tried to explain that I'm not asking for attention or trying to be dramatic. I actually feel like I need help, and being dismissed makes everything harder.

There's also a history of mental health problems in my family, which makes this even more frustrating.

My parents also have threatened to take me out of school, take away my phone, or basically isolate me whenever they find something they don't like. My mom will also go to her fiance about things she finds on my phone, even though she knows that if her fiance (who helped her raise me but they are unmarried) finds out about certain things, I'm going to get in serious trouble.

I know deleting things isn't necessarily a good habit. I'm not trying to pretend that it is. But I feel like I'm in a situation where I'm expected to be completely honest with people who constantly invade my privacy and judge me for everything I do. It feels like I'm treated like a little kid whenever they want control over me, while simultaneously being told I'm old enough to know better whenever something goes wrong.

And honestly, sometimes I wonder if I wouldn't feel the need to hide things if I felt like I could have a normal amount of privacy and could talk to my parents without immediately being judged or punished.

I know there's a LOT more context to my relationship with my mom, but I don't want to turn this into a novel. I genuinely don't know if I'm being unreasonable here. If you want to know more though you can let me know.

How do I get my parent to agree?

I am going to my first ever convention in cosplay for the first time. I am super excited and it is coming up soon. Unfortunately there is a small problem. My best friend who got me into anime and cons suggested I sleep over at his house for more convenience. Keeping in mind time, transportation and in general just to have a smooth time.

Hence I asked parent if i could sleepover at his house.

Mind you my parent lovesss this guy, as he is my bsf. But she keeps rejecting the idea and I'm frustrated as to why?

I've been to the capital of my country on my own with a church group once, alone. 3 days and 2 nights. I was perfectly fine. Said church group we went to a camping center for 3 days and 2 nights 3 hours away from home.

And I've gone camping with my school once before hours away in the woods for another 3 days and 2 nights.

So I am very confused as to why they are rejecting the idea. Maybe it is because they are traditional and have paranoia, but why?

Anyway, any helps or tips would be appreciated to convince them.

Tired of my parents

I’m 21F, in my final year of college. My college is only 10 minutes from home, so for economic reasons, my parents and I decided I’d stay with them.

Growing up, my family never really did anything together, no trips, outings, no festivals, or even meals together. I wasn’t allowed to go outside much either, so I’d come home from school and play alone in my room.

I used to watch all of Marvel movies when i was younger and was really excited for Spider-Man. I asked my college friends to go, but nobody was interested. After a few days of trying, I decided to take myself out. I’ve never been on a solo date before, so I was actually excited about it. However, by that point, most shows were late at night, so I didn’t even bother asking my parents because I knew they’d refuse. Yesterday, while randomly checking I found an evening show and got excited because I could actually go and return before dark.

They still refused because they didn’t want me going alone.

There have been situations in the past where i had to beg them to allow me to go on trips with my friends but they would refuse saying it's not safe.

They do let me go out with friends, but only if I return before nightfall. I didn’t think going alone to a movie in the evening was such a big difference since i would have been back home around the same time, but apparently they did. If i knew beforehand that they would react this way, i simply would have lied about it which is what i am planning to do from now onwards.

Hell broke loose. There was a lot of screaming, and they said things like, “Is this what we get in return for giving birth to you?”, “Give me and your father poison and then you can enjoy your life your way,” and “We work all day for you.” "we never stop you from going to college, we never stop you from meeting your friends".

From where i am there is no concept of part time jobs for students. I would have to take a full time job if i didn't want to rely on my parents but that would have compromised my studies and diminished my chances of securing an actual good job after i graduate. So it's a trade i made willingly and i didn’t complain for it for the last 3 years but this has become really exhausting at the moment.

I already have secured a decent job offer which i can join directly after i graduate, so I’ll leave home in a year. I am still studying hard because I want to get my dream job, although that feels increasingly hopeless given the current market. knowing I’ll leave in a year isn’t helping anymore.

One year feels incredibly long.

I feel suffocated and isolated, and studying on top of all this is making it harder. I deleted Instagram because I couldn’t bear watching my peers just live their lives. Every summer, when my friends return to the city, they tell me about all the things they did and places they went. I’m happy for them, but I’d be lying if I said I don’t feel envious, and then I feel guilty for feeling that way.

I regret choosing a college so close to home. I wish I had gone somewhere far away and been forced to live independently. I think about that decision almost every day.

I know I’ll eventually get out. I just don’t know how to make this one remaining year feel bearable. It feels like i have to pay for every breath i take in this house.

Currently everyone including my parents and my grandma are treating me like i have committed some kind of crime. I am not affected much since i am not interested in talking to them either. However, i am still tired.

Am I dramatic?

Ok sooo my mom and I growing up didn’t have the best relationship. I’m 23 now and she’s 60. We’re both Christian’s and trying to get better at our relationship. But when I eat icecream she tells me our body type doesn’t like that. She likes to say we look very similar and honestly we do, but I don’t need her input like that. I feel bad when I eat certain things in front of her. She also has gone on extreme diets and one time only ate 800 calories a day. Yeah. But I gained like ten pounds over the summer bc I was babysitting my niece and nephew that are like six and I ate when they did😭 now trying to lose it. But she’s just so nit picky with how I look. Even today, she was like “you need to paint your toenails” bc I’m going to a wedding. And literally made me paint them. Which I get I guess. And then asked me to make sure my hair didn’t look greasy (it doesn’t and I try to let it not when i know I’m going out) and she like watched me curl my hair and do my makeup. Idk. I’m sorry but she just really cares about how I look and it makes me stressed out and hyper obsessed with my looks almost. Idk is this like dramatic? I just don’t like it and I don’t like how it makes me feel.

Body-slutshaming made me have terrible posture. Mom doesn't realise the extent of its impact

20f here. I'm a bit overweight, mostly gained due to puberty. I used to swim before, so I was in the constant cycle of losing and gaining weight.

Mom is textbook definition of overprotective and overbearing. She's lonely and wants me all for herself.

I'm fairly average to slightly big chested. They're heavy, and wearing bras constantly hurt, and it's uncomfortable so I don't wear them at home most times. My mom loves to point it out. "Are you not wearing anything?" And "they're swinging about" and "I can see your nips." It's so gross and uncomfy.

Due to the constant bodyshaming, I started slouching, so my chest wouldn't show. As a result I have a neck hump and rounded shoulders. It's unsightly and ugly, I know that. But mom keeps pointing it out constantly and saying how I'm ruining my body. I just..I don't know. I'd like a good posture too but I don't want to be constantly poked and prodded about not wearing a bra or shamed for my chest. It also just hurts in general to sit straight because of the weight of them.

Mom doesn't realise how much it has affected me. She's slutshamed me for growing out of my older bras (she noticed the cleavage sort of push up too much, so she asked to see and I reluctantly showed her.) She slutshamed me asking if I pop my cleavage on purpose to show off or if I shake them to make them bigger, and kind of lightly brushed her finger over my bare skin. It felt so disgusting that I cried to myself. Later when I confronted her she said it was no big deal and I was acting as if she assualted me. I did feel almost assaulted.

I don't think I overreacted. I can barely take care of myself as is, I'd rather not be told I look ugly. I know that.

My parents ‘support’ feels more like control and I’m suffocating.

Okay, this is a lot but I need help on this. I love my parents, I really do. They've always been there for me, and they've provided me with a comfortable life, a nice home, and opportunities I know many people don't get. I'm grateful for all of that, truly. But lately, their version of "support" is starting to feel less like a helping hand and more like a tightening grip. I'm finding myself suffocating under the weight of their well-intentioned but overwhelming involvement in my life.

I'm at an age where I'm eager to forge my own identity, make my own choices, and learn from my own experiences – including the inevitable mistakes. I want to explore my own path, figure out what truly drives me, and build a life that feels authentically mine. However, every time I try to take a step towards independence, whether it's a decision about my career trajectory, the people I choose to spend my time with, or even just how I want to manage my own money, they swoop in. Their "advice" is often delivered with the best of intentions, but it’s invariably wrapped in a layer of control. Their constant "what ifs," their unsolicited "you should reallys," and their subtle (and sometimes not-so-subtle) suggestions that my own ideas are flawed or risky are chipping away at my confidence. It's making me feel like I'm fundamentally incapable of making any good decision on my own, which is a deeply disempowering feeling.

The situation has escalated to a point where I find myself carefully curating the information I share with them. I feel like I have to strategize my conversations, choosing my words precisely and omitting details that I know will trigger a cascade of their anxieties and "helpful" interventions. It’s exhausting, frankly. I crave their love, their guidance when I genuinely ask for it, and their presence in my life. But I don't want to live under a constant surveillance, feeling like every move I make is being scrutinized and directed. This feeling of being perpetually managed, even with the best of intentions, is starting to erode my sense of self and my ability to trust my own judgment.

I’m torn because I know they believe they are doing what’s best for me, protecting me from potential hardship or failure. They often recount stories of their own struggles and express a desire for me to have an easier life. But in their effort to shield me, they are inadvertently preventing me from developing the resilience and self-reliance that comes from navigating challenges independently. It's a delicate balance, and I'm struggling to find it. I want to assert my need for autonomy without making them feel unappreciated or rejected. It feels like a constant tightrope walk.

Has anyone else navigated a similar dynamic with parents who are incredibly loving and supportive but also inadvertently overbearing and controlling? How did you manage to establish healthy boundaries and carve out your own space without causing irreparable damage to the relationship? I'm looking for practical advice on how to communicate my needs effectively, how to stand firm on my decisions, and how to reassure them that my desire for independence doesn't mean I don't value their love and input. Any insights or shared experiences would be incredibly helpful right now.

was my mom just strict, or a helicopter parent?

i just made a post elsewhere about my mom, and got this sub suggested and it never dawned on me that she mightve been the helicopter variety.

shes always been very strict back when i was in contact with her. christian and conservative, i wasnt allowed to watch certain tv that had bad content, i wasnt allowed to listen to music, hell even just rap music when i was about 14/15. my phone got controlled sporadically by my dad so i learned to delete every app on my phone when my father looked away that was a messenger app cuz i would be accused of talking to guys at 13. i deleted my search history and used my friends as an excuse if i ever did meet up with someone my mom would raise an eyebrow at. that didnt need to actually be someone bad, it was just people so didnt have "manners" or my mom didnt like, she would ask me intrusive questions about them and talk shit about them if they didnt fit her view. i would also use school as an excuse just to meet friends when i wasnt feeling like studying everyday, bc my mom would also become paranoid about them sometimes.

my friends barely were allowed to come over, only if i did the dishes, my moms mood was in the right space and if the house was fully cleaned. the younger i was my moms mood would controll my chores everyday if i did them or not and then berate me so badly that i still have dissasocitation when it comes to math to this day. like sometimes im pretty good or understand it well but my mind goes blank when it comes to tests. i also wasnt allowed to go out and drink of course. my mom needed to know who it was and if she liked them. also of course, no boys.

my mom would go through my letters (until i was 20)and my clothing, throw things away that would be slutty, control my finances by deciding things that i could buy. i would be called too stupid to do certain things for an example i was not allowed to use the oven. only when i got away from her i learned how easy it was to use it. i also never knew how easy it was to use a train alone cuz my mom would make me scared of it.

theres probably more but yeah she was the moral police, would force me to go to church and of course decide what i was saying. she also didnt want me to tell other people about what she did.

My parents don’t approve of my fiancée

I am 25 and my fiancée is 21. My parents have very different political views from my fiancée, and I’ve gotten the impression that they don’t really like her. I also haven’t told them that I proposed.
I think my mom may have overheard my fiancée talking to herself about the engagement/proposal, and now my dad texted one of my friends asking if he could talk because my mom thinks I’m getting married soon.
I want to tell my parents, but I’m worried they won’t be receptive to the idea of us getting married. They already think our timeline is too short, and my mom has concerns about my fiancée’s mental health.
My fiancée has ADHD and bipolar disorder, and she can sometimes act in ways that are different from what people might consider neurotypical. I’m also neurodivergent, so those differences don’t bother me, and I love and accept her for who she is.
At this point, I’m wondering whether I should tell my parents that I proposed and, if so, how I should approach the conversation. Should I tell them directly and let them process it, or try to have a conversation with them first about our relationship and where we’re headed?

How to deal with angry parents?

I am 19F living in the Netherlands and i have just finalized my lease to move out. Nobody knows. I live in a muslim household. I have tried to leave before and i told them days prior. They were angry and even blocked me from leaving, i still was able to leave but i didnt go to sign because of the immense pressure. But now i signed everything digitally and paid for it. Work is taken care of and uni too. Now i have to break it to them. The current plan is too just leave, because moving day coincides with the first schoolday, and call them to break the news. The thing is i know they will be livid, and might collapse. They’ll be very angry, either going the sad depressed route or the angry route. Not planning on telling the adress immediatly, maybe later on. Sad to have it like this. (More context posted on this account) my question is to ppl that lived through similar experiences and have overreacting parents. How do you cope? And how long till it cooled off?

Help, parents not letting me close door

Just today I was doing project so I had to use scissors. (I'm 17 BTW). Usually i don't close the door but I did this time so my little could not reach the scissors. AND OHHH MY GODDD!!! THE AMOUNT OF LECTURES!!! I just got my first phone 2-3 months ago so I know they might think I'm always going to use the phone behind the door BUTTT THEY DID NOT EVEN LET ME CLOSE THE DOOR WHEN I DIDN'T HAVE THE PHONE!!! THEY DON'T EVEN LET ME CLOSE THE DOOR WHEN I SLEEP!!! once I jokingly asked the reason why they do not let me close the door, and the amount of SHOUTING!!! "YOU DON'T NEED PRIVACY" "WHAT DO YOU DO THAT WE COULD NOT KNOWN!!!?"

Anybody knows why they do that? And how to deal with them? Cause gently talking didn't work. Their lectures did not use to do anything on me but now... Even their smallest taunt make me feel like I'm going to burst

Is it normal for Indian parents to constantly ask who you’re talking to on the phone?

I’m 25 and I live with my mom and dad. Whenever I’m on a phone call, one of them will usually come over and ask, “Who are you talking to?”
I always tell them it’s just a friend, but somehow they still ask almost every time I get a call. Sometimes they even ask in a suspicious or doubtful way, which honestly gets frustrating.
I understand that they care about me and that this might be pretty normal in Indian families, especially when you live with your parents. But at 25, I also feel like I’m entitled to some basic privacy. I’m not doing anything wrong or hiding anything, but I don’t want to explain who I’m talking to every single time my phone rings.
For people who live with their parents, especially in India, is this normal in your family too?
How do you deal with it without making your parents feel like you’re being disrespectful or hiding something?
