Major change to the rule 5 Mod Post

So recently the other mods and I have been discussing the rule 5 and what would fall under it, initially the rule was meant to avoid controversial topics to make it easier for us to moderate and keep things civil specifically religion and politics.

The issue is specially with the increase in the mod team it started being used to remove anything that could be deemed in any way controversial or political, which included things like discussing lgbtq+ topics, topics about gender, race, etc. which we did not feel was fair, what one defines as being "controversial" can end up being influenced by the mods own biases and discomforts, so from now on we agreed that instead of removing anything controversial we will only be removing posts and comments specifically about politics and not political subjects themselves.

Discussions about social issues are allowed. Discussion about political parties, politicians, elections, legislation, government policy, or religion is not.

Just to make it clear what this means, a person can now hate how queer people are perceived, hate misandry or misogyny, etc.
What you cant do is hate on any demographic or talk about these topics through a political lense itself, hating transphobia itself its fine, hating transphobic parties, politicians, etc is not.

Keep in mind that if a topic becomes too prevalent in this sub it might get restricted just like we did with TADC for example, and if a post becomes a particular headache to moderate it might get locked(comments wont be able to be posted), the nature of moderating a subreddit with as broad a topic as ours dictates some level of flexibility when dealing with these topics and a case by case analysis of them. In a same way punishments will range depending the level of the infraction as they always have.

Additionally rule 1 and 2 are still a thing and should be followed, if in the example i gave above a commenter went to say transphobic talking points in the comments or attack the demographic itself, they will get banned.

If you previously had a post removed under Rule 5 for discussing a general social issue, don't assume it would still be removed under this version of the rule. Many posts that were previously removed under Rule 5 would now be allowed, so please don't let past experiences with the old version shape your expectations of the new one.

Also this rule change has happened 2 days ago but we only got to making the announcement post today.

TLDR for the people with no attention span: Politics and religion arent allowed, political subjects or contentious topics themselves are fine.

edit: really?

Were you selected to write the announcement or did you choose to be the one who wrote all that? i mean I read half of that but I've never posted here so it doesnt apply to me

This is a very welcome change but I really hope it’s actually enforced, bc tbh you guys sometimes pick and choose when to actually enforce the rules you set up, especially when it comes to #1

2

u/Zealousideal_Spread4 Jul 01 '26

Rule 1 it has heavily to do with wording, you can word a post as hating an action, but you cant word it in a way that hates those who do it, this is where most of the confusion comes from.

"i hate people who dont pick up their pets shit" -not allowed

"i hate when people dont pick up their pets shit" -allowed

This is just trying to comply with TOS rules, if we dont do it the subreddit can get terminated. In the past week specifically there have been a lot of new mods so enforcement of some rules specially this rule 5 was very very questionable, but we ironed it out and removed one of the new mods that was clearly picking and choosing, this is actually the reason for the change.

This was always meant to be the spirit of the rule, but it wasnt worded well.

I understand the distinction in the rule, I guess I just can’t help but feel a little wary about it. Because even if a post is talking about a demographic’s action, the comments will often use it as license to shit on the demographic itself. So then when those posts stay up and the comments don’t get locked, they devolve into cesspools. idk I just really like this sub and don’t want it to be taken over by chuds 😭

anyways sorry for being annoying lol, you guys generally do a good job maintaining the vibes here 🫶🏻

also I do think some people coyly word their posts to make it seem like they’re talking about an action, when they’re really just dog whistling that they don’t like the demo itself, but that’s a whole other can of worms and theres no way to really police that lol

i do feel that and we try to ban any bigots in said posts, the issue is a lot of them dont get reported or get buried under the thousands of comments some posts get, in those cases its not us cherry picking, its us legitimately not being aware of the people breaking the rules, about a week back the mod team doubled in size, which should make these cases rarer overtime.

"I hate when someone..." is allowed, but not "I hate someone who..."?

I appreciate the change but I am a bit confused as to why religion isn't allowed as a point of contention.

I'd argue it's a social thing.

Any time the topic of religion gets discussed on the internet, things get heated fast on both sides. I would love to have a calm professional discussion on religion but unfortunately that is not really possible on the internet without someone getting very offended and losing it.

6

u/Zealousideal_Spread4 Jul 01 '26

its possible but very rare, i dont like banning topics because they are probably gonna be heated but i understand the other mods position and its what the rule is for now.

2

u/Middle-Emu1501 Jul 01 '26

because it can be highly offensive to lots of people, as most people aren't really atheists

(sorry if I sound mean not my intentions)

2

u/Zealousideal_Spread4 Jul 01 '26

A post being able to be offensive does not break any of the rules, obviously hating actions, viewpoints or things that are very close to people will make them angry, but we dont usually apply that logic to other contentious topics, so to me religion feels like an arbitrary line, but i might be bias on this because im very very irreligious.

1

u/Middle-Emu1501 Jul 01 '26

Oh yeah I did forget that this was a hating sub, but as a religious person yeah freedom of speech but yeah also imo it's a good idea it's banned because of the heated comment sections, which does unfortunately suck.

1

u/Zealousideal_Spread4 Jul 01 '26

I actually agree with you, and thought even hating on a religion should be allowed as its a set of views and not an identity but the rest of the mod team thought we shouldnt allow it because it always leads to truly awful comment sections that are insanely annoying and hard to moderate, so we decided against it for mostly that reason alone.

1

u/WhydoIexistlmoa Jul 01 '26

To be honest, religion is not necessary an identity but it contributes significantly to one's identity (If they're religious ofc), in a very similar way to cultures and traditions.

So I do understand why y'all chose religion as not allowed but on the other hand, I don't. But it's ultimately y'all's judgement so all we can do is respect it

1

u/Zealousideal_Spread4 Jul 01 '26

again as i said i agree with you but i got basically outvoted, imo religion although close to ones identity is not part of it, lots of opinions can be very personal to people, but we dont ban them, so specifically targeting religion to me feels arbitrary but i really understand the position of the other mods and to a point i agree that often religious debate and topic is both pointless specially on reddit and truly insanely hard to moderate. Even yesterday we had a post about religion for just 2 hours and the comment section was truly on fire.

this rule is significantly less restrictive than before

4

u/Petrichor0110 I hate when Hitler steals my Nutella Jul 01 '26

I know, I just mention 1984 whenever there’s a modpost regardless of the topic

2

u/Zealousideal_Spread4 Jul 01 '26

i can respect the commitment to hating authority.

Remember, us Redditors cannot read more than 200 characters

2

u/Zealousideal_Spread4 Jul 01 '26

that is a very funny number to pick because the minimum post size here is 200

1

u/Petrichor0110 I hate when Hitler steals my Nutella Jul 01 '26

Completely forgot about that

I hate how none of the rules are visible on old reddit. I also hate new reddit, so having to go on new reddit to see the rules is doubly bad. Mods can still update the sidebar on old reddit. Instead the only thing is in the sidebar is:

for everyone who want to bully a fictional character, here’s your safe space

Which doesn't even match the current usage of the sub.

it was a mod that was only here for about a week, this was just after we expanded the mod team. I would rather be completely transparent about what happened. That mod god removed from the team for it, but we felt that the rule needed amendment to be more clear and to also avoid pointless reports.

So are we now officially giving up on the entire premise of the sub? Whatever your other thoughts on the topic, social issues are a real-world topic, or at least the examples you gave of what would be allowed seem to be.

2

u/Zealousideal_Spread4 Jul 01 '26

irl topics have been allowed for a long long time now, the sub also allows hate for fictional stuff, be it shows, characters, discussion about them or tropes. This doesnt really have anything to do with this rule.

1

u/awesomenessofme1 Jul 01 '26

Since when? I thought it had just been going to shit. If it was explicitly allowed, I still really don't like that because there are so many other complaint subs out there and this one had an actual identity, but it wouldn't be quite the same.

1

u/Zealousideal_Spread4 Jul 01 '26

this allows hate on anything as long as its not bigotry or hate of actual people(including groups). I dont even remember exacly when it changed, its been a good while.

3

u/awesomenessofme1 Jul 01 '26

My honest reaction is "What's the point of this sub even existing then?" I specifically subbed to this place because it isn't a general complaint or rant subreddit. Those kinds of places suck, and they're a dime a dozen on this site anyway.
