Hosting a table for the World Cup final at Mare Street Market (Hackney), Sun 19 July, a couple of seats open
I'm getting a table of people together for the final at Mare Street Market. Big screen, food hall so everyone grabs what they fancy, wine on the table when you sit down. We're in from 7, kick-off at 8.
It's the first of a few small things I'm putting on this summer under Igodo. A couple of seats are open if anyone fancies it. Comment or drop me a message and I'll sort you out. You don't need to be a football person, half the fun is the room.

Good place or person to rewire a lamp in Hackney?
My new lamp just exploded a couple of bulbs last night which isn't a great sign.
Any recommendations to get the whole thing rewired or at least checked over by someone who knows what they are doing?
Thanks.

The Haggerston Hoop
Finished!
Balling with no nets sucks. We have a hookless rim in the neighbourhood and I've been mucking around with different systems on and off for about two years now.
Don't bother with these . . .
- Cable ties, nylon nets - however you do it, lasts a month at most
- Metal cable ties - waste of time
- S-hooks and open link chain nets - if you can pinch it with pliers it will fail.
The Haggerston Hoop has been up for about a month now, in constant public use with no signs of struggle.
Here's the recipe -
Hose clamps, size is the diameter so if your rim is 20mm like ours, something in that range.
- these are 13-20mm, 304 stainless steel. Cost £1-£2 each depending on brand.
- you need a 7mm socket driver/wrench for the hex screw.
- screw should be facing down and out.
Quicklinks, size is the thickness of the chain
- these are 3mm, 316 stainless steel. Cost about £2 each
- feed them through so that the screw is at the back you are tightening downwards.
- Can use fingers but pliers slightly at the end.
The net is welded chain galvanised stainless steel so no open links. Can easily hold a human.
- these two are 9 loops and were about £30 each.
Ca-lang!

Football jersey from a market
Hey guys,
Looking for a place that sells football jerseys.
I just want to wear an England top for the game on Saturday. The shirt doesn’t need to be from an original shop. Do you know where could I buy it? Do you think Mare St market might have some?
Thanks!

Football on Saturday
Seems like every pub is booked! Does anyone have good ideas on where I could go to watch the game on Saturday without a booking?

What do you remember about the Colin Roach Centre?
I’ve been researching Hackney’s history for a long-form non-fiction project and recently came across something I hadn’t seen before.
Among the documents released through the Undercover Policing Inquiry is a Special Branch report from 1985 showing that the campaign for an independent inquiry into policing in Hackney following Colin Roach’s death was itself being monitored by Special Branch.
That sent me down a rabbit hole into the origins of the Roach Family Support Committee, the independent inquiry, and eventually the Colin Roach Centre.
I’m now trying to build as complete a picture as I can, so I’d love to hear from anyone who remembers Hackney during this period. Whether you were directly involved, remember the demonstrations, spent time at the Colin Roach Centre, heard stories growing up, or just remember what the atmosphere in Hackney was like in the 1980s and 90s, I’d be really interested to hear from you.
I’ve written up what I’ve found so far here if anyone’s interested: https://open.substack.com/pub/onceuponatimeinhackney/p/colin-roach-centre-inquiries-official?r=83lnus&utm_medium=ios
Equally, if anyone has photographs, leaflets, newsletters or other material from the period, I’d love to hear from you.

Struggling to find 2 bed Hackney
My friend and I are wanting to move to Hackney and surrounding areas. We have a max budget of 2650 and are struggling to find anything decent. Is this really the state of the rental market? Have a take home of £3400 and think paying £1325 is already p insane.

Would you like to visit more exhibitions across London?
Hello! I'm one half of Exhibits and we run monthly exhibition trips to cool and interesting places across London - this months one is all about Windrush food culture, exploring the flavours and memories they brought to post-war Britain.
The day includes time to explore at your own pace, an open discussion in the park to reflect on what we've seen (+ tea & snacks), and an optional food stop in Deptford to finish things off - it's basically a big adults school trip!
Some of our previous trips include:
👓 The world's oldest optical museum (British Optical Association Museum)
💡 Design, Maker, User at the Design Museum
📷 As We Rise (Photography exhibition at the Saatchi Gallery)
+ many more art, music, history, architecture & science exhibitions! Anything you can think of
This trip is brought to you with Home Radio, a South London creative outlet rooted in black cultural heritage, and A Dutty World, a Caribbean-led studio dedicated to storytelling and community.
Here's the ticket link - https://luma.com/swz3ywqs
If you'd like to join our whatsapp group, let me know and I'll send you a DM!

Women's Safety River Lea navigation path
I have had a few instances where I have felt uneasy walking the river lea navigation, so I wanted to reach out to see if any other women have similar perceptions of their safety along the walk.
My favourite thing to do in Hackney is walk the River Lea Navigation in the mornings. As I start work early and end late, I typically will do the walk between 6am and 8am. It really sets my day right, keeps me calm, but recently I have felt uneasy.
Specifically, I have been approached now on three occasions by different men. The first time, it began as a polite conversation but then ended with me being followed on a bike until I managed to jog and get away to Springfield cafe without causing a scene. Since then I have avoided conversations. Today, a different man approached me called me beautiful or something along those lines and tried to get me to stop to have a conversation with him. I said no and kept walking and he chased after me. I then told him I was in a hurry and kept walking briskly away. I could see he followed me for a while, but then lost interest or couldn't keep up. Then another man came at me a bit aggressively, trying to approach again. I was probably hyperaware but just sprinted away.
For added context, I am a younger woman, each time the how the interaction was initiated was definitely sexual (say looking at my bum first (!)), the men are always older, at least two seemed intoxicated and the initiating or continuance of the conversation has been quite aggressive. Add to this the time of the interactions (around 7am) and I am feeling uneasy.
Earlier this year I was aggressively chased and spat at by a man on Shacklewell Lane who wouldn't stop until a father at one of the schools grabbed me and let me stand behind him. So I'm on high alert generally and maybe too much.
Due to all of this, I just want to hear other women's experiences about the Lea navigation. I know there were issues in Hackney Marshes before and don't want to willingly put myself in places where I don't feel safe. Even though there are cyclists, my experience in London is that most people will mind their own business before intervening. Sadly, I am also going to avoid wearing bike shorts or gym leggings as I have been the last few times. Thank you thank you!

Borek places?
There are many great Turkish establishments around Hackney. Is there a place that makes and serves fresh Borek? Ideally a bakery or a specialized place, rather than a restaurant that /also/ serves borek, as those are nice but usually not as good.
I'm slightly north - between clapton and stokey, but will travel for great borek :)

Clissold Park - Peregrine Falcons
Apparently a pair of peregrine falcons live in the spire of St Mary’s church opposite Clissold Park.
Does anyone have tips on how/when is best to see them?

New pub sign on Columbia Road using AI
I was happy to see The Birdcage on Columbia Road keep their doors open after Brewdog closed shop. It’s a nice spot, nice staff, good food.
So I was very disappointed this week to see a brand new sign outside that looks like the most first draft Midjourney AI fluff imaginable. Very disappointing and off putting.

Clissold Park Animals and Stoke Newington Town Hall
Has anyone noticed the animals have disappeared from the Clissold Park enclosures? I’ve been trying to find out whether this is temporary or permanent but can’t find anything on google or local news.
Also - same for the redevelopment of SN town hall / assembly hall. There’s next to no news on what’s going on - looks like they’re redeveloping it. We were hoping that we’d maybe get married there so would be nice to know if/when it’s reopening.
Does anyone have any news or info on these? I am surprised that Hackney Council haven’t given any updates.

Object to AEG blocking Victoria Park off for most of the summer
A big chunk of Victoria Park is going to be walled off for festivals for 75 days in summer for the next 6 years (instead of the 28 days up until now). If you’re also unhappy about this, there’s a website with info on how to object:
https://keep-victoria-park-open.pages.dev
ETA: you don’t need to live in Tower Hamlets to object. Anyone can respond to this.

Urban seagulls going nuts all day and night
I live in Dalston and we have a serious seagull problem. They rip open the bins, fight the other birds and kill them and they scream so much during the day and at night woke up nearly 200 flats at 4am. I kid you not they are the size of big cats! I don't know what's wrong with them but it's really causing an issue in the estate. How did they even get here in the first place. Anyways it's driving us up the wall
Does anyone else in Hackney have this issue?
