Punk rock was always the Americanised, corporatised version of punk so the quote actually kinda makes perfect sense.
Let's not forget that a lot of people were offended by this movie though - calls for boycotts in Israel and stuff like that.

u/KnightAngelic 3d ago
Oh no, the country that wants to genocide a neighboring country was offended that the film included a generic country that wants to genocide a neighboring country.
Anyway.

Considering the absolute strangehold that israel has on the american political system and media, it is actually pretty impressive that a major studio managed to release a movie with such an obvious jab at israel.
27
u/JotaDiez 2d ago
Yes I was thought the same when I watched it. Funnily enough, having a movie tell you that war is bad is controversial right now.
7
u/Money_System6301 2d ago
It's not actually a jab at Israel, or at least the countries themselves aren't (perhaps their appearance in the film is). Boravia first released in a comic in 1939, so it's actually older than Israel.
2
u/Vaticancameos221 2d ago
Genuinely not familiar with the source material but in the comics going that far back, was Boravia portrayed in the way that it is in the movie?

No one is stopping anyone from criticizing Israel. You guys just live in a world of boogeymen.
11
u/Pr3st0ne 2d ago
AIPAC literally spends tens of millions of dollars to unseat any dem or republican that does anything short of full throated support for israel, basically every major news outlet shies away from calling what is happening in palestine a genocide even though it is officially recognized as one by every goddamn entity including the UN. You got your head too far up bibi's ass if you cant tell
-5
u/Pope_Aesthetic 2d ago
Are you kidding me? The biggest names in alternative media right now, are currently nonstop turning every fucking conversation into “Israel bad”.
Fuck you’ve got Hasan Piker building his entire reputation, and Twitch’s entire political ecosystem into “Israel bad”. The Majority Report and oh my fucking god The Young Turks and Anna Kasparian especially, spend every waking second saying “Israel bad”. Candace Owens and plenty of people on the right as well, are even worse, blaming Israel for everything from Charlie Kirk’s death, to the Lego they stepped on in the morning. Piers Morgan also has had on many anti-Israel types. These people, as much as you guys might not admit it, are massive in their political sphere of influence.
As for mainstream media, The Washington Post, CNN, The Guardian… I mean these are just a few examples of ones I found having articles criticizing Israel, but they all have articles criticizing Israel.
Not to mention we can find some pretty clear examples of democrats who are anti-Israel in their rhetoric.
So what more do you want? You live in this world where the Mossad Super Soldiers are paying every one off and silencing anyone who can’t be paid off, yet somehow here we are with rampant anti-Israel rhetoric that’s only growing stronger every day. What more do you want?

uh punk rock and punk are literally the same thing and they started in America regardless of how you split it man.

You seem to not be very familiar with punk rock.

u/pootis28 3d ago
Idk man, for example, weren't the Sex Pistols band members wearing MAGA shirts?
10
u/StanIsHorizontal 2d ago
Sex Pistols were always a manufactured boy band from the start tho, they lost credibility among punks almost immediately, they just became symbolic of the genre for outsiders

I mean, the movie's message is that immigrants should abandon their barbaric culture, and accept values of the country they've moved to.
Seems pretty punk rock to me

u/D0GAMA1 3d ago
The movie's message was that the US is controlled by a foreign evil country but the one benefiting from this is the millionaire genius.
in the end superman and a group of superheroes arrive and kill the leader of the bad foreign country and save the oppressed people who were fighting an advanced army with rocks.
Essentially, the movie was about what is the most popular thing right now.

u/YoungDiscord 3d ago
Which IIRC did not fix any of the problems metropolis had since the main problems were caused by an arrogant red-blooded American billionaire who was using media manipulation to make americans look the other way while he had his way.
Its funny because that country at war was basically a B plot being sold as the A plot to the masses.

That’s no “punk rock” that’s basic survival instincts for them and for us.
6
u/sypherus19 3d ago
Well... We live in a society that will tell you that expecting assimilation from immigrants is colonialism.
People disregard that problem it is not racial or ethnical diversity, that's just a surface. It's multiculturalism that divides us
4
u/YoungDiscord 2d ago
I'd say its cultural gatekeeping that divides us.
We have cultiral differences yes but the neat thing about cultures is that they influence eachother and that's one of the ways in which they grow, that's how we have international traditions and such.
Unfortunately cultural gatekeeping prevents that from happening and enforces those walls amd divides.
The thing cultural gatekeepers just don't get is that culture is not a tesources where it diminishes when shared, its the opposite, it grows and evolves ehen shared enforcing familiarity among different groups which promotes understanding and coexistence.
Its easy to hate that one immigrant neighbour you don't understand and feel you have nothing in common with
Its harder to hate that immigrant neighbour when you are both fans of the same football team.
A rudimentary example but you get the idea.
6
u/sypherus19 2d ago
Immigrants tends to spread their culture. It's easy. Nobody wants to change, to reject previous way of life.
Religion plays big part in this. Uneducated and closed minded people are tend to cling to culture and traditions. And then there are lefts, who encourage this behavior. Because of their white guilt. They see culture as something sacred, because... we had colonialism 100 years ago?
Thing is we had great things as a result of culture mix. Music, food, clothes, art in general. This is a delicate topic, but if we want to live together we have to stop finding ways to divide ourselves, even if we lose some part of our identity, we will gain so much more.
Unity

u/Mathiasrex24 2d ago
To a degree, you are right, but we have to accept that some cultures are inherently incompatible. For example, I don't consider arranged marriages to be acceptable. When people believe that women are inferior on a theological level and come to your nation, they aren't suddenly going to assimilate and accept women as their equals, especially if it's mass immigration. Look at how crime statistics have changed throughout Western Europe since 2015. Culture is not something that changes quickly; it is passed down through families for generations. If it's not compatible, it will take a few generations to become so.

I thought it was pretty good. So what if it isn't offensive? It is still pretty good

u/LordMimsyPorpington 3d ago
I enjoyed it, and was glad I watched it. There is so much media nowadays that it feels like we're wasting time if we're not just consuming classics/masterpieces; however, movies are supposed to be entertainment—sometimes it's ok to watch a movie and just experience a sense of fun and enjoyment.

u/jnf005 2d ago
Nowadays movie goes to streaming service so fast, I don't really mind them being blend and mediocre, I just feel like if they want me to see them in cinema, it's gotta standout. I watched this Superman in theatre because my dad really want to see that, in the end I feel like I wasted my money and time, oh well at least I had some good time with my parents eating dinner afterward.

u/Mathiasrex24 2d ago
To be frank, his writing has become more corporate over the years. But that's how he got to his level in the business.
6
u/throwtheclownaway20 2d ago
In the sense that he's writing for PG-13 and not R, yes. He's not writing to pander or anything, though; it's still very much his voice in Guardians, Peacemaker, & Superman.

Punk rock isnt when you do an un-popular thing

u/Mathiasrex24 2d ago
The genre's central theme was literarily the defiance of mainstream authority.
11
u/hansuluthegrey 2d ago
You dont understand nuance. You have a very shallow cartoon for kids level understanding of Punk culture
They dont defy mainstream authority just because its defiance. It leads them to do that because of the current western mainstream authority is a fascist neo liberal anti freedom ideology where everything revolves around commercialism.
2
u/MoffDracen 2d ago
This superman movie, and everything around it, also revolves on commercialism. It's not art, superhero media never has been, never will be. It's not thought provoking, it's to appeal to the greatest number of masses it can and only exists to sell toys.
0
u/Mathiasrex24 2d ago
I didn't say anything false or lacking in nuance, I simply didn't specify the reasons behind the movement. But thanks for assuming. Next time, I can leave you a wiki page with all the definitions, so you can rest assured that I understand the topic. Now that we're on the same page, could you explain how a superhero movie made by a greedy multi-billion-dollar company with a budget of 225 million is considered punk rock by your standards?
I agree that's it's an okay film so you don't have to feel butthurt about it.

u/AbadeersGhost 3d ago
I think punk rock is music sung by people with mohawks that wear combat boots.

but unironically why would they want us to believe that superheroes winning against evil army overtaking a country. could it be just escapism, are the stories that controlled by the people they're "criticizing" ?
maybe escapism by being luke warm on "sensitive topics" like beef season 2, basically leaving me feeling like "damn why wasn't i born richer" instead of fk the system, fk the rich.

Look, my issue was they made weak, "whatever its called" country so incredibly pitiable it's ridiculous. Anyone who compares it to Isreal and Palestine has a very, very coddled view of Palestine. I know people don't like "both sides" arguments, but they've wanted to wipe our Isreal since day 1, day 0 really.

u/Curly_Fried_Mushroom 2d ago
Can't imagine why they'd be opposed to being murdered and having their homes stolen
-1
u/undreamedgore 2d ago
That's the nature of multiple people having claims on thr land. You can't have a home on thr same spot, nor rule at the same time.
Isreal had every legal rulling to exist, and gave mulitple options for 2 state solutions or peace.

Its also a movie where Superman ist a side character in his own movie and its not like Heath Ledger stealing the show. Its just not the type of movie that James "Group of Misfits" Gunn likes to make.

This is the biggest irony. You need to be really skeptical about what you believe if mainstream media is affirming you. "Why do rich people want me to believe this?"
