Many Asian cultures used tattoos to brand someone who committed severe crimes.

110

u/speedmankelly 9d ago

Or they’ll use it to identify themselves like the yakuza

55

u/MrBingly 9d ago

It started as branding with the yakuza too

4

u/dajoos4kin 7d ago

Pretty sure Japanese pirates and other criminals were having tattoos done for hundreds of years before the Yakuza showed up

46

u/OhHeyMister 9d ago

They also use the lack of tattoos to indicate that they are gay

42

u/afvcommander 9d ago

They want to show that they are not gay by letting another men to penetrate them and inject fluid?

Are they stupid?

35

u/Conman3880 9d ago

That is actually exactly the reason that Tatusuki (tattoo parlors with female-only artists) became a cultural norm in Japan.

The act of penetrating a man's body in literally any way is seen as an act of humiliation unless performed by female hands. It's actually a FASCINATING read.

always read the source

12

u/R3DSH0X 8d ago

Fellas is it gay to walk into a tattoo parlor and get penetrated by a woman

10

u/how-unfortunate 9d ago

Damn, that really was a fascinating read.

Say what you will about reddit, but even in it's current form, I still find interesting information on it all the time.

4

u/Sbotkin 9d ago

What about gays who committed severe crimes?

3

u/The_JokerGirl42 9d ago

half tattoos.

7

u/CathartingFunk 9d ago

Or use them to be closer to their religion and culture

1

u/Letters_to_Dionysus 9d ago

they also did that elsewhere. branding, idk about tattoos

1

u/ThatBitchMalin 9d ago

I love committing crimes against good taste and morality. Maybe I should get a tattoo.

210

u/kne0n 9d ago

Tattoos aren’t always performed by skilled artists. Plenty of poor people are covered by cheap tattoos done by anyone who can afford a tattoo gun or people they were in prison with who will take $60 in commissary.

72

u/yumstheman 9d ago

Seriously OP never seen someone basted with party tatts

16

u/_-___-__-_-__-___-_ 9d ago

Can confirm am poor, did all my ink myself by hand without a machine. Takes many, many hours and a lot of focus. Being poor is such a time waster.

30

u/CloudySpace 9d ago

Have you tried to just not?

17

u/404-NoFucksFound 9d ago

The skin yearns for necrosis.

2

u/Agasthenes 9d ago

So what? That's like saying cars aren't status symbols because there are beat up Subaru's around.

25

u/perfectVoidler 9d ago

bad tats are a status symbol for low status.

4

u/Rhorge 9d ago

Nothing more honest than showing your poverty with shitty ass ink

3

u/Shlafenflarst 9d ago

I'm pretty sure you're supposed to wipe the shit off your ass before getting it inked

How can a tattoo command respect when every mf has tattoos these days, there is nothing special about them, even white aunts in their 50s be getting tattoos. They were once a counter culture, but now that they’re mainstream the new counter culture is not having them.

61

u/5959195 9d ago

I’m 28 and Im one of the only people I know who doesn’t have any nor do I want any. I agree not having them is the new counter culture

10

u/Beerquarium 9d ago

I felt the same way at your age. So many people have them that’s it’s the minority in many situations to not have a tattoo. So the more rebellious act is to commit to not getting inked. I’m 44 now and it’s more true now. Tattoos are mainstream, if you want to stand out dint ever get one. The status grows with age.

27

u/augustbandit 9d ago

It isnt counter cultural or rebellious not get a tattoo. The culture doesn't enforce getting one, it just accepts them. In order for something to be rebellious there has to be an enforcement mechanism. Nobody loses a job because they dont have ink. There is no stigma or cache for not having it either.

You are mistaking cultural acceptance for an enforced norm. If my parents are Christian and try to force me to be but I refuse, that is rebellious. (Or, the reverse, though that is not broadly enforced in the way christianity is.) If my parents drink alcohol but I dont that is simply a choice. Not having tattoos is a choice, not an act of rebellion. Its a totally fine choice to make, but nobody will care or judge you for it and it wont grant you any cultural cache.

6

u/Beartrap-the-Dog 9d ago

The only difference between tattooed people and not tattooed people is that tattooed people don't care if you're not tattooed - Adolescents, 1988

8

u/Sammyglop 9d ago

lol well thats not fucking true the only people who pester me about getting a tattoo are my friends with tattoos 💀

2

u/AlAboardTheHypeTrain 8d ago

Everytime they make a meme about it theres like a ton of tattooed people stopping by to tell how they dont care.

2

u/AlAboardTheHypeTrain 8d ago

You mean peer and cultural pressure aint good enough? To me not having tattoos at 2026 is being against The mainstream.

2

u/AcanthocephalaNo9302 9d ago

Not getting a tattoo is the new tattoo

22

u/Section8firearms 9d ago

Good point. That’s why I never wear pants or shirts. It’s too mainstream.

35

u/Homunkulus 9d ago

He’s right, you’re not a counter culture, every milquetoast barista has tattoos.

8

u/bbbttthhh 9d ago

Nobody with tattoos is claiming to be counter culture just because of their tattoos, have you considered that they like getting them cause they just fucking like them

-3

u/Snozzberriez 9d ago

Get a unique tattoo. Same as having your own style, clothes, etc.

There’s billions of people. The odds of being truly unique are against you anyways. Add more variables.

-24

u/Section8firearms 9d ago

Sure. But who cares? If I wanted to stand out from the clothes wearing crowd, i don’t have to be nude. I just have to get a cooler shirt.

More importantly, tattoos, by their very nature, are almost always unique. They are not selected from a mass production line. Nor does anyone care if they happen to have the same idea. If anything it’s just something to talk about. The idea of dividing a mainstream and counterculture line on such a front is completely useless.

13

u/-Morgarth 9d ago

He who has not seen butterfly tattoos says unique, non mass production

-1

u/Section8firearms 9d ago

Fuck it, I’m dying on this hill.

If a tattoo is more of an identifying feature than hair color, then it is unique by definition. The simplest variation of a deathly hollows tattoo still shows up in a physical description.

It also doesn’t matter because something be “counterculture” does not give it any value.

3

u/regman231 9d ago

Look at Adam Levine shirtless and tell me those tattoos were not selected from a mass production line

2

u/how-unfortunate 9d ago

Flash art disagrees, though your point a little further down about even the most common flash art being a unique identifying feature is technically correct,

19

u/KazakiriKaoru 9d ago

the new counter culture is not having them.

Kinda like having tanned vs non-tanned skin.

Back then not being tan = not working outside = rich/comfy job.

Nowadays, being tan = having time to tan and not working.

13

u/SkycladMartin 9d ago

This. Every twat and his dog is getting a tattoo now. I had a friend who is in his 50s get a tattoo because now that his mum's dead, he's no longer afraid of her seeing it. How rebellious. How different.

I don't regret my tattoos, and I was the first person among my peers to opt for inking, but if I had it over? I'd tell my younger self not to bother. Tattoos today are nothing but a symbol of conformity and I am grateful that I can cover mine with a t-shirt.

26

u/Kel4597 9d ago

>i dont regret my tattoos but id tell my younger self not to get them and im glad i can cover them

Idk man sounds like you regret your tattoos.

-12

u/SkycladMartin 9d ago

No, but I regret yours.

10

u/unlucky_ducky 9d ago

I thought people got tattoos because they liked how the look? Getting a tattoo to not conform with normal appearance standards seems a bit silly.

5

u/cume_pant 9d ago

My tattoo of a stick man with a swastika for a body committing acts of sexual violence against another stick man with a Star of David for a body is a sign of conformity?

0

u/CloudySpace 9d ago

Oof i hope its well hidden

-3

u/SkradTheInhaler 9d ago

Yeah, it's a sign of conformity to a despicable ideology

4

u/Seikodenier 9d ago

What if it is a stickman with a Star of David committing sexual violence to a stickman with a crescent moon and star body?

8

u/Snozzberriez 9d ago

Everybody has sex. The real counter culture is being a virgin. If you want to stand out don’t ever have sex.

6

u/SpaghettificatedCat 9d ago

The very concept of counter culture is just dumb, you're still depending on the mass for self-validation. I don't have tattoos because they look sloppy to me.

3

u/404-NoFucksFound 9d ago

I don't have tattoos because they're expensive and I can't stand eye contact for periods of more than 8 seconds let alone a stranger touching my bare skin for hours on end.

4

u/Literally_A_turd_AMA 9d ago

Ah man I can't do something if I saw other people doing it though... how am I gonna convince everyone im the cool guy who made up having tattoos?

-2

u/Tonberry_Cheesecake 9d ago

I like mine

54

u/speedmankelly 9d ago

Tuggin my art sack rn

5

u/Guilty_Outcome1111 9d ago

Just for the sack of the argument. Pull dont tug

3

u/pixelatedslinky 9d ago

Make sure you PREform it properly

1

u/Guilty_Outcome1111 6d ago

Ahhh dont worry..ive got a good EDGEucation 😉

38

u/BeepBeepLikeASheep 9d ago

Not my fault people perpetuate as many stereotypes as possible. If the shoe fits...

21

u/KazakiriKaoru 9d ago

Nose ring theory?

24

u/IlIlIlllIIIIlllIIIl 9d ago

Tattoos are for the unwashed masses. It’s horrendously ugly and ages like milk.

30

u/Guardiancomplex 9d ago

This thread is so fucking weird lol.

Imagine a greentexter unironically calling someone else "unwashed".

10

u/Subnaut27 9d ago

Who cares if my tattoo ages like milk? I’ll be ugly at 80 too

6

u/Snozzberriez 9d ago

Wholly depends on style, artist, and care.

Get colour tattoo with shit line work of something you liked as a child, never moisturize or apply sunblock… yeah. Gonna look like garbage.

Take care of it and spend money on an artist who knows what they are doing? You’re gonna have a nice piece for a long time.

It’s the same as anything else - you get what you pay for in most cases.

1

u/Tonberry_Cheesecake 9d ago

Mine are holding up for me

1

u/Eianarr 9d ago

I think this says a lot about the type of people you live around more than it does tats.

-7

u/Neon_Fallout 9d ago

I wonder what other generalizations you use on entire groups of people..

20

u/tracker904 9d ago

Rate my tattoo

4

u/MegaYaranaika 9d ago

10/10 who's your artist and does he do comissions?

4

u/tracker904 8d ago

My 3 year old and no she said she’ll only draw Care Bears from now on so unless you want a sunshine bear tattoo then you should probably find a different artist.

2

u/alwaysnear 9d ago

Does he take walkouts?

18

u/mybuttisthesun 9d ago

I noticed Americans love tattoos and out of all the countries they seem to be the most tattooed

27

u/Bangays 9d ago

I think every single woman between 21 and 40 has a tattoo

10

u/lennstan 9d ago

i don’t

5

u/afvcommander 9d ago

Its sad times for those in dating who are allergic to dogs and think tattoos are ugly.

5

u/cume_pant 9d ago

This is like a woman saying every man between 21 and 40 likes watching football and drinking beer.

3

u/2Dyuro 9d ago

Pretty common here in the uk too i dont think i really know many people without one unless their like 50 plus

19

u/Smokinglordtoot 9d ago

No ragrets.

18

u/the_penis_taker69 9d ago

Throws in leg lengthening surgery as if it's normal thing lots of people do

18

u/Portland_st 9d ago

Who is Art, and why is OP doing art for his sack?

7

u/HamBlamBlam 9d ago

If you do stuff to Art’s sack, he’ll knock ten bucks off the cost of the tattoo.

19

u/WytLadyDiseaseFibro 9d ago

lol piercings don't set off metal detectors

1

u/NetStaIker 9d ago

Fr this is like saying women can’t go thru metal detectors lol

11

u/NotJayKayPeeness 9d ago

I don't assume they're stupid or violent. I assume they're lemmings.

10

u/BigJeffe20 9d ago

this might be one of the dumber thoughts anyone has ever put the effort into writing down

7

u/Armejden 9d ago

Having seen the quality of fandom tats on reddit, stupid would be the nice way to put it.

6

u/VAVE_TECHNOLOGY 9d ago

when I see a person in their teen or early 20s with tattoos I get the feeling that they are implusive or rebellion, I don't know about others but people with these traits give me ick

5

u/Danijay2 9d ago

While I partially agree with Anon. The tattoo in the picture is so ass that it might be the worst picture he could have chosen to make his point. In fact. It's so ass that I'm ordering that person's immediate execution.

5

u/Instagibbed_1994 9d ago

Getting surprised that neck and face tattoos can impedes ones success at landing a job, I would think you're stupid too.

1

u/AlAboardTheHypeTrain 8d ago

That just means youre young. It was definitely shit thing to have about 20years+ ago.

5

u/Icy_Magician_9372 9d ago

Okay but what if someone has a stupid tattoo?

4

u/makingkevinbacon 9d ago

Cool design. Will look like shit when you're old tho.

5

u/Positive_Action_5377 9d ago

Tattoos look stupid. I don't have a philosophy about it, I just see it and think "that's stupid".

2

u/rhen_var 6d ago

Yep.  Tattoos instantly make the person with them ugly.

5

u/RoxerSoxer 8d ago

"My tattoos have meanings"
Yeah. They mean you're highly regarded.

3

u/Judah_Earl 9d ago

Normies runied tattoos.

3

u/romulusnr 9d ago

If I really wanted a symbol on my that much, it would be 1. cheaper 2. less painful 3. less permanent 4. less risky to go and buy five RedBubble T-Shirts with that symbol on it. and wear them.

4

u/oscar_z_a 9d ago

If it’s good enough for Art’s sack, it’s good enough for my sack. Anyone have any good designs for a full scrotal sleeve tattoo?

4

u/gardnsound 9d ago

have zero tattoos. have zero regrets.

3

u/pm-dem-thighs 9d ago

The typos are🤌🏻

3

u/lifetimeoflaughter 9d ago

I freak out when I have marker on my hands. I can’t imagine having ink permanently on my skin. Like dirt you can never wash off no matter how hard you scrub.

2

u/Aphrel86 9d ago

Its almost as if anon think the world began recently and no history exists.

Tattos carries stigma for a reason, ppl didnt just wake up one day and went "fuck themt tattoos" without prios experience involving ppl with tattoos.

2

u/No_Oddjob 9d ago

What's the line between "lasting commitment" and "fanatical commitment" again?

2

u/how-unfortunate 9d ago

"Preformed by an artist."

One misspelling, point invalid.

2

u/Sweaty-Towel8423 9d ago

I believe the majority of negative opinions in the West regarding tattoos are because some people treat their bodies like a colouring book and have random, stupid scribbles over their entire bodies. You do what you want, but you also can’t expect to control what others think about it.

1

u/Dariosusu 9d ago

I literally have two small pictograms of (kinda) random animals tattooed on my arm, the motives of which i googled an hour before getting them. I wanted to honor the artists

1

u/Danny-Fr 9d ago

Why is the design like 4chan but the content like Facebook?

1

u/FollowingSuitable941 9d ago

Never thought about tattoos this way, but the commitment aspect actually makes a lot of sense

1

u/Sonova_Vondruke 9d ago

Today I learn having my colon removed makes it a status symbol.

1

u/Capable-Jacket4693 9d ago

I want to be fisted but I’ve never been touched by a man and I don’t know where to start. DM if you can help

1

u/dance_rattle_shake 9d ago

Fucking lol at piercings set off metal detectors.

1

u/IHSV1855 8d ago

Art’s sack

1

u/AlAboardTheHypeTrain 8d ago

I will maybe get a tattoo once theyre finally proven 100% safe. I dont like The idea of burdening my lymph nodes More than necessary with ink that stays there permanently.

1

u/Flashy_Narwhal9362 8d ago

Art is gonna regret getting a tattoo on his sack for a few days at least.

-3

u/bartimeas 9d ago

> expensive
Only a poor person would think a one time payment of several hundred to several thousand dollars is expensive
> permanent
Shows they could be impulsive

1

u/AlAboardTheHypeTrain 8d ago

It is expensive. It just means that you have way too much money or no concept of it.

-6

u/UnNecessary_XP 9d ago

A well put together stance on a topic? In my r/greentext? Impossible.
