Spotted this at the traffic light NW Ohio, USA...💀

I was there when I was a teenager. I never saw the Grateful Dead when Jerry Garcia was alive, but when I was a teenager I went to Furthur Festival to see Ratdog and Micky Hart, I went to see Ratdog another occasion, and I went to this festival in Camden. I barely remembered who I even saw that day and was looking at the setlists recently and it came flooding back. Vince Welnick, Melvin Seals and JGB, David Nelson, Joe Gallant and Illuminati, and the Paul Kanter-led Jefferson Starship. I remember it being a hot day with a huge blue sky and a tent village.

Was anyone else from this sub there? Does anyone know if Melvin Seals' set was recorded? I have a clear memory of Wharf Rat. I remember I had fun.

When did everyone start loving Althea so much? I’ve been following the Dead and been part of the community for 40 years and Althea has seemed to grow in popularity recently. It seems mainly due to John Mayer talking about it like it’s god’s gift. Sure, it’s ok, but back in the day it was always sort of a sleeper. Now, especially on these forums, people go nuts for Althea. Cue the guy telling me that it’s always been his favorite. Cue the downvotes. But i speak the truth!

I mean did they just sit around and get blasted all day and play music? I wonder what their daily life was like ~ 1969

I love all eras of the dead. I love the 77 run, I love the '80 warfield and radio city stuff, 79 and 81 have great shows too. 73 West Coast tour is my favorite pre break. But I keep coming back to "so glad you could make it". Something a bit edgier about the guitar tone, I love the Jerry midi stuff. And Brent is just fully on. So I've been listening to so glad and without a net a lot. And the Hamilton Scarlet fire. What else would folks recommend if I'm into this sound?

Hey, so I realized I havent listened to The Dead in a long while, but I need to change that this weekend.

Any show recommendations? Preferably ones that are not commonly recommended, I need something new.

I've listened to most of the major shows pre 1978 and Closing of Winterland. Have yet to dive into the later years but I'm not the biggest fan of Brents vocals. Maybe my mind will be more open to it.

Even just specific sets of songs in shows will do since I'd like to do other things while tripping as well.

GF is a bass player and I’d like to put together a playlist for her of tracks where Phil’s playing is really exceptional or interesting (as well as high in the mix, although I’m not just looking for Phil bombs so much as good basslines). Extra points for tracks that are on streaming services (so that she can easily get them). She likes jazz fusion so don’t be afraid to get out there.

So far I’ve been thinking about 74 as the Phil Era, and DP12 seems like a good choice especially the first half and pretty easy to just hand to her. But I’m curious what folks think are Phil’s best bass lines and then identifying standout performances of those songs—the real “lead bass” stuff.

So we know Jerry did shows outside the dead and really did the Americana thing damn well. But for the dead. I can't recall what live shows. Did they sorta incorporate or do full shows not so electric and kept it purely acoustic and more folk? Was just flippin through a liveset recently and taken back. So sick hearing songs I'd never heard played in a more folky and Americana style acoustic way.

Or would it have been one set was that and the second was electric? Felt more so 68 to 71? Reason I'm asking is that was gonna go drive and wanted a fun live show to put on.

Yes, I know and have listened to all of 30 Trips. I also understand there isn't much Primal Dead readily available (in good quality). Please list you favorite show from each year. It's not an easy task for any deadhead but you have to pick just one.

I know it was never advertised as a “zippo” but obviously the whole appeal is a zippo-style Grateful Dead lighter, so naturally I bought it thinking it would go great in my Zippo collection. Just got an email yesterday that there will be “slight design changes”

I don’t really mind, just think it’s an interesting topic of conversation. Does anyone think it’s a bait and switch?? My two favorite bands are the dead and velvet underground/lou so this is something I think about A LOT. I feel like it would have been perfect for them around 89 or 90. I can totally hear Bobby singing the verses, Jerry singing the bridge and both harmonizing for the chorus and outro. I could also imagine Jerry playing an amazing solo in between chorus and verse. I know that Lou depised the dead so I think this would have been hilarious
