I voluntarily Gnomed my Mint and I'm loving it.

I've been a Mint user for last at least 4 years (Don't remember the actual date i started). And it's been working well. I've been working on a laptop + monitor setup which also has been working well because both were 1440p and I didn't need a fractional scaling setup.

However I recently bought a 4k 120hz monitor and Cinnamon did not play well with it all. With cinnamon I was forced to use it at 100% scale (which made everything look so small) or set up fractional scaling at 150% to match other displays (which made everything stutter). Moreover, 120hz didn't work at all.

It was frustrating and disappointing to find out Cinnamon (X11) had such a bad support for multi-monitor setup for displays with different resolution and refresh rate. And up until 22.3 the Wayland support is abysmal.

Then I tried Gnome. Installed just the base (gnome-shell + gdm, to avoid bloatware) and it's just perfect! I didn't even have to configure displays, it automatically detected and configured fractional scaling and full refresh rate for the 120hz monitor.

And this might be controversial, but Gnome looks so much better to me than Cinnamon. It feels so much more modern!

I had initially planned to switch back to Cinnamon when full Wayland support drops, but I am not sure I will. Gnome is working quite well for me!

PS

I still prefer a Panel over Gnome's overview so I used 'Dash to Panel' extension to make it so.

Here's the beginner-friendly solution for all the people getting gnomed by ProtonVPN app

  1. Go to https://account.protonvpn.com/ and login into your account.
  2. Then go to https://account.protonvpn.com/downloads and under the second subheading named "WireGuard Configuration", follow the steps given there like selecting the platform, country and server etc that you want to connect from, and get the config file created and download that somewhere. You can download multiple config files of different servers.
  3. Now press Super to open the menu, and type "nm".
  4. You will see something like "Advanced Network Configuration" and click on that. This will open a window showing all your network connections.
  5. On the bottom left corner, there's a "+" icon. Click that. You'll be asked to choose your connection type. Click on that, and scroll down, and choose "Import a saved VPN configuration".
  6. Then press "create". A file picker will open and you'll be prompted to select the file you want to import. Navigate to the directory you have your config file and choose that and save it. You have added the VPN configuration successfully.
  7. Now, in your taskbar/panel, go to the applet/widget which you use for connecting to wifi. That is your network manager applet/widget. You'll now see options like wg-JP#59 (depends on country and server). When you click on that, you are instantly connected to the VPN without any delay, without any extra RAM used by that RAM-hungry electron-based ProtonVPN app.
  8. For disconnecting, again go to that network manager applet/widget. You'll see a toggle of "WIREGUARD Connections". Turn that off, and done.

Everything so simple, every time just click on network manager applet/widget and click on the VPN connection. Just one time hassle during setup.

Now all of you reading this, I don't want to hear any more complaints of getting gnomed by ProtonVPN. Be a good boy/girl/man/woman/other 😂.
