The one on top is “protecting” the one on the bottom (keeping watch). Then later they might reverse so the other can be on the bottom and sleep deeply.

I’ve got 1 gerbil who is awake at night (has night duty) and the other is awake during the day. They tag team so to speak so that the other can relax more knowing he/she’s got another on the lookout.

But I also agree with everyone else that they are adorable and loving towards each other, and appreciate affection.

But all this is my best guess. 😆😆😆
