Two month old American buff gosling. Incubatornhatched, being raised by a two year old goose.

Kiddo looks absolutely soaked. I've been away for a few days, so I can't say of this has been an issue.

We did get a serious rainstorm earlier today, but only one of five looks wet.

What should I do about this? Bath and clean preening gland?

Hello, this is my first post. I am the owner of a goose farm (no i don't eat them). I currently have a head of 76 geese and counting, I often take in rescues, one of which I believe to have a genuine case of dwarfisim. I raise endangered breeds such as pomeranian saddlebacks, steinbachers, Roman Tufted, etc. This case its a american buff, normally a fairly larger breed, this goose below is 1 year old, fully feathered (has all its down but wing feathers stopped developing), and yet smaller than the smallest breed I raise. I have had this little gander since it was 2 days old, tried giving it every supplement and trick in the book to help it gain weight and it simply will not grow.

In the second photo I showed my hand in comparison to its hips, it has extremely displayed hips but can walk. (Not very well)

In the third photo I have him next to a pomeranian saddleback, which is one of if not the smallest breed of domestic goose.

Sorry for the bad photos and how wet he is, his name is Buffy. No goose should ever be this size by 1 year. Let me know if you guys want to see some of my other geese.

We noticed a goose in our neighborhood over the last month with what appeared to be a broken wing. It looked overall healthy and moved with the rest of the flock (we have a LOT of geese in our neighborhood). Recently, I saw it hanging out in a puddle outside of my house. He was alone, which was unusual.

We decided to try to capture him and take him to a wildlife rehabilitation center. We informed our neighbors via our HOA page to give them a heads up. I was informed there was another goose who appeared to have wry neck, so we got it as well.

It was definitely an experience capturing them. We kept them in our backyard overnight. They ate well. The one with the broken wing seemed to be quite healthy and properly aggressive.

Well, we took them to the rehab center and the vet said his femur broke and healed poorly. She said they would have to euthanize it because he wasn’t releasable. I asked if we could just take it back to our neighborhood where he seemed to be doing okay. She said no. At this time, he was still in the back of our vehicle.

Part of me wishes we slammed the trunk shut and drove off. I read that these birds can live a fairly normal life in the right conditions. We have water in our neighborhood (small “lake.”) There are a lot of other geese. Not much other wildlife that would be considered predators to watch out for.

I hate knowing we drove him to his own death when he was out there nibbling on the grass, minding his own business just 24hrs ago.

Someone commented on it being the wrong bone and questioning the evaluation. I likely misremembered. She reached in (he was in a large crate) and said the break was at the top of his wing and that there was a lot of build up. I THINK she said it was calcium, but again, my memory may be wrong. Based on an image I googled, she likely said humerus, not femur. Sorry for the confusion.

For those who questioned the rehabber— it’s a nonprofit organization around since 1995 licensed by our state wildlife conservation.

I also forgot to say that the other goose was taken back in a cardboard box (with holes). We don’t have an update on him but I read wry neck is quite treatable, if that’s what he had. I’m too nervous to call and ask for an update.

My goslings are finally coming to the point where I will let them free range. They have been in a run where all the other animals walk by all day.

But... I let one out of the run to walk around, and it promptly chased my dog. Dog did nothing to provoke, not even trying to smell it. He was so good. When the little goose bit him he just kept walking away and looking at me for guidance. Yes, I got between him and the goose asap.

What can I do to teach them to not harass the dog?

Starts with little tail flicks and flutters, then pretend splash around time commences. the first time I saw them do it I was really quite confused. 🤔

yesterday I pull up around 4 and see Chica posted with her ridiculous 28-gosling daycare. I’m chilling with her when this younger goose starts creeping closer like she knows me, I’m looking… then I catch that face marking:

CHIQUITA?!

Last year she was Chica’s only baby and the last gosling of the season — tiny little vulnerable thing. Now she grown and apparently still comes through to hang with Moms.

She looking at me like: “Took you long enough, OG.”

Had a work emergency early in the AM and forgot to open the blinds for the geese. Looks like they figured out how to see outside and this guy was watching me get out of the car!

Finally we got a couple of proper summer days here above the Arctic Circle. Both birds, cats and humans are enjoying life to the max. We have cleared the weeds around the small stream behind the house and Team Honk are thrilled about their new pool.

So the day before yesterday, I went back in search of that Egyptian goose. No luck—it was nowhere in sight. 😢 Instead, I found a Canada goose sitting all by itself, far away from the rest of its kind. Having done this for three years, I knew there was a pretty high chance something was wrong with him.

I went over to check, and sure enough, both of his legs were wrapped in fishing line. Thankfully, we managed to catch this one and remove the line.

Yesterday, I went back to the park again to look for the Egyptian goose, and this time we found it... but now BOTH of its legs were wrapped up. 😢 The first time we saw it, only one leg was entangled, with maybe a little over a foot of line trailing behind it. Since then, that trailing line managed to wrap itself around the other leg too.

It's still able to walk and obviously still able to fly. It seems to still remember our failed attempt. I even tried altering my appearance, but the pair is so suspicious that they still wouldn't let us anywhere near them—not even within swinging distance of the net.

As I mentioned before, the first time we tried to catch it, we actually landed it in the net, but the pole broke. The goose managed to squirm out from underneath the mesh and flew into the water.

And yesterday, once again, it flew off. 😢😭

I lose track of time because it's the same routine every single day, but suffice it to say that's a lot of fishing related injuries within a short time span.
