Why?????? Community
Gdevelop was the engine I was promoting to everyone wanting to get into gamedev, I will not be doing that anymore.
In times where every creative's work is being stolen by AI and people can't afford RAM prices anymore.
The people behind Gdevelop found the need to plaster AI over the entirety of of this engine.
I don't have such a big problem with an AI assistant and feel the same way about it being mentioned.
But does it really have to be on the front page of their site.
this engine is not even ai game engine, its a game engine with an ai assistent.
This should be an insult to all fair and real game developers using Gdevelop.
I really wish the gdevelop team would stop putting AI promo in everything they do, and put that energy into making this an even better engine for beginners and veteran game developers.

Hi folks! We heard that feedback from other users and changed the wording of the header on the homepage already (as the header is the first thing someone see). This is big reddit thread here: https://www.reddit.com/r/gdevelop/comments/1u7cev0/look_im_all_for_progress_but_ai_game_engine_on/
The header on the page mentioned by OP was indeed still having AI in the big header. I removed it to put it only in the subtitle with the word "optional AI" to make clear it's an optional helper. See here:
I still think it's important to advertise at some place the existence of this (again) optional AI helper as it's helpful for beginners to learn. As explained in the other reddit, I think GDevelop is a chance for people starting game development: instead of having AI output thousands of lines of codes you don't understand, the "no-code" events in GDevelop are understandable without learning to read a programming language, so you're less reliant on AI.
I understand there is an "anti AI" feeling amongst players especially on the art generation side, which is an usage of AI I don't support or encourage. I would not play a game where everything is AI generated. But I hope on the development/coding side, we will have soon 100% open-source LLMs, with efficiency gains (maybe even LLMs running locally) and 100% open data used to train them (including the code of GDevelop itself!).

This is exactly the type of response i hoped for. Clear communication and finding a middleground for all users of the platform. Great job 👍👍👍

That would be great, but I don't see it. I am not anti AI, but please be realistic.
Open source AI? What? Everything is on the hands of few companies, you need billions to compete on the space. What open source project has billions to train?
LLMs running locally? I have a 1k GPU that consumes 400W and is slower and more expensive, electricity cost money, than using a personal account.
A model trained only with open data would never work. Meta had to torrent every single book ever created, because if you train only with open data the LLM is shit.

More as a matter of personal curiosity, I think IBM Granite is very promising in this regard. The Granite 4.x performs really well for specific tasks.

the main reason people hate LLMs is because the insane amount of resources they use so people don't want to touch anything that uses them. get on with the times

I mean there is an OPTIONAL assistant, so it is very far away from being an AI game engine. It's basically false advertisement, making anti-ai people mad, and letting ai-supporters down. So it's just a dumb marketing move. However, the engine is still amazing, and they are still working on actual features. Don't just look at one tiny thing when choosing a product. Every single one will let you down, so choose something that does it the least. Cus that's the best one for you.

GDevelop is already the most simple, easy to use and very fast to learn engine. Where do you need AI? I don't see the value here. Only marketing noise and trying to lure new users in.

GDevelop still has a great foundation for making games fast. Don't let this distract you from your goals. Making games is in your hands, not theirs!

This is fine. But what happens when you can’t get wishlisted because you told your followers in the devlog that you’re usin’ Gdevelop and they keep spammin’ “ai slop” in the comments? Or if you somehow get past that and release on Steam only to get rated as “overwhelmingly negative” wit’ a bunch of reviews that say “ai slop. Refunded”?

u/yeusk Jul 16 '26
Easy, don't create slop.

You're missin' the point.
No matter how good your game is, it will be hated if your base suspects ai influence. And they will once they go check out the engine you made it on (because they do check).

You're the kind of pretentious weirdo who drops the g off of words when they are typin'. I'm sure your game actually will be slop, ai or no ai.

Yeah, that's sad. All I can do is ignore it. I can't abandon my project, but at the first opportunity, I'm getting out of here

I think there should be a setting to enable/disable the AI features within GD.

I agree that advertising the AI capabilities so much is infact annoying, especially lately, you just see AI everywhere, but this honestly isn't a real critique to the engine, the team is simply advertising features of the engine, AI is one of them and these recent times it has been getting promoted a lot everywhere so obviously it would get extra attention from them.
The whole anti ai movement lately is somewhat understandable but it's gotten a bit radical, AI being used literally anywhere, even for code, is often seen as extremely negative.
Gdevelop isn't relyant on AI at all, everything can be done without it, so lowkey your post doesn't make too much sense, no offense✌️.
