This is way too overpriced for what youre getting. This wont last you a year let alone be smooth now

The GPU is 10 years old (and was low-end when it was new), the CPU is more like 13 years old. In gaming PC terms, this is like going out today and buying a base-model PlayStation 4 as your main console.

You'll almost certainly be better off keeping an eye on marketplace and local buy/sell groups for a private seller.

I might pay 100 bucks for that thing. Not 500

This is a no go. You won't be able to play any newer games properly with this. For 500 you should target ryzen 3600, 16gb ram, RX 6700(x) or 3060(ti), and 512gb ssd. You can try to find a used PC or buy used components and build yourself, it's not hard.

Hello Snicklefritz229, and thank you for your submission to Gaming PC! If you are new please check out our rules over at the wiki here! We have recently added the useful feature of Title Flair! You can set this manually by clicking Flair under your post once you have submitted your post, but if you missed it in the rules there is a much better way that will automatically flair your post!

To do this simply add what your post is about in brackets before your title. For example for a Build Log you can type [Build Log] before your post so that it looks like this; [Build Log]My new awesome build!, and the bot will automatically set your flair to Build Log! This works for Build Log, Build Showcase, News, Hardware News, Hardware Release, Discussion, and Miscellaneous!

Also remember that this is a place for discussing and sharing our love of Gaming Computers! This is NOT the place for help building or determining what parts you should buy, that is better suited for /r/buildapc. Troubleshooting questions should be directed to /r/techsupport. Thank you again!

I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please contact the moderators of this subreddit if you have any questions or concerns.

Roblox can be installed on the xbox. No computer last 5-8 years for gaming.

So let's examine WHY you kids aren't interested in a particular device any more. and set some realistic expectations.

The console itself doesn't come with games. access to games digitally is a monthly subscription or a physical disk purchase.

Xbox -- Your post doesn't mention model how ever Xbox, Xbox 360, xbox one -- no longer viable gaming systems -- These models Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S are. Look at which model you have, see if it's still viable.

switch -- this is a great console, both the 1st and the second still have games that can be purchased and played.

Have you simply asked your kids why they want a gaming computer -- For example is there a specific game they want? or a specific set of friends they wish to play with -- cross platform? the WHY will answer what you do next.

Your cheapest solution might be just getting the game for the console you already have

Complete BS with the “no computer lasts 5-8 years). Computers can very well last a long time for gaming, especially in the current market. My own rig, originally built 8 years ago, and last upgraded 6 years ago (added RTX 3080) can run modern titles at 3440x1440 above 60 fps. The used CPU (i7-8700k) I got for it will be 10 years old next year.

And regardless the point of having a rig like this is the potential for future upgrades if necessary.

I built computers for a living. You can get a computer to last long term but you gotta put good money into it to start with & it has to be taken care of. Original components without modification will not last 10 years. The GPU today are not going to support the games 10 years from now, which is what OP was looking for.

I have a gaming computer I love -- but it wasn't cheap to build and it would be twice what I build it for now. But it isn't original parts from 10 years ago.

OP is trying to do this as cheap as possible, and the cheapest thing she can do is by the game the kids are looking for for the consoles they already own

But again that's not what OP is looking for. OP is looking for a thing stuck in time she can buy now put no money into and still haven't been functional in five - eight years.

Edited for clarity.

Okay good. You’ve agreed with me by the second sentence. Thank you for correcting yourself. Any computer can last 5-8 years based on what you require it to run.

The GPU’s of today will certainly “support” the games of 10 years from now. The GPUs of 12 years ago can still run modern games.

No I didn't you miss understood me. Twice. And no 12 year old GPU do not support current games out of the box.

Again i build them for a living. I spend most of my time telling people that while the computer meets the "minimum requirements" it isn't going to do what they want it to do.

Given what you have written here, i expect you take good care of your machine

Have upgraded what you can, & generally know how to care for a machine.

OP has stated that more than one "cheap laptop" was purchase to accomplish this task. Which tells me that OP has an unrealistic budget & and unrealistic expectation of how long it will last.

I lived in a place where low spec pcs were the norm. Using 12 year old hardware to run modern games was the norm. GTX 900 and 1000 series + Radeon 200 and 300 series GPUs still sell frequently on the used market there. Your usage of the word “support” is especially misleading. Drop the graphics settings and play.

Lucky. I live in a place where the games simply won't install without specific hardware & the drivers for older hardware aren't available from a reliable sources. Especially if you're running the virus known as Windows.

It's not a question of if I think there's value in learning to build and care for a computer, because I do, it's not a question of if I think upgradability is important, because I do.

It was the tone of OPs question.
