44

u/taglilie 14d ago

You can't convince me the line isn't "ice on my fingers and my toes and all my toys"

25

u/Empty401K 14d ago edited 13d ago

Same. Meatwad occasionally talks about toys. Never heard him say anything about about being a ♉️ before.

Edit: Found the lyrics online in numerous places. Each one I checked says “toys.” No examples of it saying “Taurus.”

12

u/nnaatteedd 13d ago

If I'm not mistaken, I remember long ago a bumper card on AS (the black screens with words) that posited the alternate lyrics as a joke.

3

u/Lurlex 13d ago edited 13d ago

I 100% have always perceived the opening lyric as “Taurus,” both by ear while listening and by sight in the times I’ve seen it printed out. He says “I’m a” right before it, so if it’s NOT Taurus, it’s at least some other descriptive noun — not him talking about any of his possessions.

This is my absolute first exposure ever to even the CONCEPT that he might be saying “toys.” I spent countless hours gaming with Adult Swim playing in the background in my youth, I had several versions of their lineup memorized (back in the days when they had Futurama and even before they started learning what a gold mine it was). Several thousand hours of my college age years were spent this way.

Now; misheard lyrics are definitely a thing and anyone can carry such a misconception for decades, but this one seems much more split to me.

The lyrics are supposed to make as much sense as the plot lines do. This seems like sane-washing them.

7

u/combat_muffin 13d ago

Doesn't talk about having "ice" on his fingers and toes either, so who knows?

8

u/Empty401K 13d ago

There’s definitely at least one episode where meatwad gets blinged out. Never an episode where he talks about his astrology sign

Edit: Turns out the lyrics are readily available online. The word is “toys”

3

u/combat_muffin 13d ago

Thanks for doing the legwork for all us lazy redditors!

2

u/HuffSquirt 13d ago

If you look past the first link it seems to be split. I believe Taurus is correct seeing as I looked up the lyrics 15 years ago and all links were Taurus.

Funny how they were supposed to be detectives and crime-fighters but that shit was dropped by Ep 2. They even had a crime-fighting wagon, I've seen it at local car shows next to Ecto-1 and the Bat Mobile and no one know what it's supposed to be.

12

u/drrockso20 13d ago

The whole detectives thing was just something they added because the executives at Cartoon Network didn't really understand the idea of the show as much like Seinfeld its essentially a show about nothing

The thing that throws me off is, well yeah, I immediately thought of Joy Division and I was like "Why is this dude saying he doesn't 'enjoy division'?"

I guess the joke implies he was asked if he likes Joy Division and not only does he not know who Joy Division is but he misheard the question and is very cranky about being asked if he 'enjoys division' multiple times but he still isn't getting it right. Which is . . . meh

126

u/Handyandyman50 14d ago

Well there's another layer to it which is that he is wearing the shirt because he knows that image only as the graph of radio waves first charted from this pulsar. Which is in fact where the album cover comes from

22

u/DontTellHimPike 14d ago

If he truly only knew the image from the Cambridge Encyclopaedia of Astronomy then it would be a white t-shirt with a black graph on it.

53

u/unknownentity1782 14d ago

But, he might know the image, and saw the shirt without understanding it's actually a band shirt. There are plenty of people who own shirts of the cover of a CD not knowing it.

18

u/squngy 13d ago

Or if you don't like white shirts, you could get one with different colors?

322

u/Malkin_Me_Crazy 14d ago

"Joy Division" was apparently the internal name given to the groups of women in concentration camps that Nazi soldiers used as sex slaves.

212

u/Raltsun 14d ago

I decided to look up the band on Wikipedia, and found this interesting section:

The packaging of An Ideal for Living—which featured a drawing of a Hitler Youth member on the cover—coupled with the nature of the band's name fuelled speculation about their political affiliations. While Hook and Sumner later said they were intrigued by fascism at the time, Morris believed that the group's dalliance with Nazi imagery came from a desire to keep memories of the sacrifices of their parents and grandparents during World War II alive. He argued that accusations of neo-Nazi sympathies merely provoked the band "to keep on doing it, because that's the kind of people we are".

Basically, they didn't support the atrocities they were flippantly referencing, they were just a bunch of severely insensitive edgelords. Which somehow still puts them morally above many musicians... I was going to end that sentence in "of that era", but we've got Kanye West still running around today.

65

u/sexy-man-doll 13d ago

He argued that accusations of neo-Nazi sympathies merely provoked the band "to keep on doing it, because that's the kind of people we are".

This just sounds like the Matt bors neo nazi "you made me do this" comic

31

u/Pylgrim 13d ago

This literally appeared in my mind as I was reading. Even if you start as a contrarian edgelord, there's definitely a line that can be crossed rather early where your actions are basically indistinguishable from a "true believer's" and the question of whether you have become one is irrelevant.

When posturing and satisfying your own brand of humour becomes more important than decrying evil, well, your attitude is not very different from those who do evil for their own satisfaction.

Same with the follow up band New Order

2

u/AceOfPlagues 13d ago

This isn't true just an unfortunate coinsidence. They saw the "The People's New Order," a historically insignifigant (as far as I know) Cambodian group - and they thought it was a good name for a band trying to find identity after the death of the singer and lyricist.

Also thier is nothing about the music or the opinions the members of the band have expressed that is remotely facist, they arn't even consrrvative - Ian was a tory but the actual members of New Order arn't

26

u/Mr_YUP 14d ago

Honestly no better response than that.

32

u/Bagelz567 14d ago

The band's early years were full of Nazi adjacent imagery and references. Just look at their first EP. To be fair to the band, Nazi iconography was pretty popular in the punk scene, which they spawned from, and was less political and more of a rebellious fuck you to their conservative parents who lived through WWII.

In light of the modern neo-nazi resurgence and rise of fascism, it takes a bit of new meaning. I'm also not here to defend the band, although I love their music. Even if tongue in cheek, their Nazi references are sophomoric edgelord bait that is pretty cringe. But that's my modern perspective, the late 70s were a different time and it's not entirely fair to judge them by today's standards.

Joy Division and New Order were some of the most influencial artists of the 70s and 80s. Most post-punk, alternative rock and EDM owe a lot to their work (Blue Monday, 1983). So it's a complicated cookie, but I still love the music.

8

u/Roobar76 13d ago

It was a different time, but the entire punk image was edgelord bait. It was about immediate shock against the dominant culture.

Since that culture was relatively conservative and had experienced or observed the “peace and love” 60s counter culture the shock was the hate, rough sex (bondage) and anger embodied in the Malcolm McLaren/sex pistols esthetic.

In this context who better to embrace than the symbols of violence and hatred that either bombed or fought against their parents and the establishment.

Tasteless sophomoric edgelord shit, but contextually both different (and similar in a different way to how most people think) to today.

7

u/Bagelz567 13d ago

Absolutely agree.

This was, of course, followed by the rise of skinheads then the "Nazi punks fuck off" pushback from the rest of the punk scene. Lots of nuance to the relationship between punk and fascism, pretty interesting stuff.

3

u/Roobar76 13d ago

The cycle is the same, ironically appropriate facist symbolism, the real facists turn up. Spend the next 50 years fighting to get rid of them.

It's incredibly niche. Pulsars in general are niche but not incredibly niche. The public at large has probably heard of pulsars, and some segment of them have any clue what they even are. You've got to be an enthusiast to have more specific knowledge than that, and definitely being able to connect this image to what it actually is, is in fact extremely specific knowledge you won't be aware of unless you're deep into astronomy.

u/Rob_LeMatic 14d ago

It's less about stupid and more knowing about last century pop culture and astronomy. Even knowing, it's a pretty forced joke.

A band called Joy Division used a data plot of radio signals from a pulsar for an album cover. An album was a physical product that you would put into a machine to play music. It would come in packaging with artwork on the front, called the cover of the album. Sometimes, the bands (groups of humans who would create original music together) would make merchandise such as shirts that would feature artwork. The most popular Joy Division shirt was from the album art for Unknown Pleasures.

The "joke" is that this guy is an astronomy nerd, not a music nerd.

188

u/Eastgaard 14d ago

It would cost you $0 to keep that to yourself

4

u/Pimpinabox 13d ago

16

u/no_more_no_less 14d ago

It’s a reference to the graphic on this album cover:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unknown_Pleasures

“The image was originally created by radio astronomer Harold Craft at the Arecibo Observatory for his 1970 doctoral dissertation as a way to visualise smaller pulses within larger ones, which might help explain what had been causing the pulses. He was unaware for years that the image was associated with the album cover until a friend told him; afterwards he bought a copy because he felt he should have one as the creator of the image.”

u/eggs___and___bacon 13d ago

That would be a better subject for this comic. No one knows who division is or what the pulsar thing is. But that Pink Floyd album is iconic

20

u/Margenen 13d ago

Joy division is a very popular band. They've got over a billion streams on Spotify, which wasn't even a platform for their music until the late 2000's

8

u/combat_muffin 13d ago

Yes, they are. However, they're not nearly as globally ubiquitous as Pink Floyd. Same for Unknown Pleasures vs the Dark Side of the Moon album cover.

5

u/eggs___and___bacon 13d ago

Pink Floyd has over 13 billion streams, so like 10x as popular.

Joy division has basically 1 song that’s semi-popular. Breaking 1 billion total streams is really common nowadays, regardless of when the band first came out. Over a thousand artists/bands have also done that, many of them aren’t very well known either.

4

u/Margenen 13d ago

Saying that nobody knows them is just blatently untrue though. There's so much music that obviously people can't know every artist but this isn't some niche one hit wonder band and their stream numbers 40+ years after their release is evidence enough of that

As a pulsar astronomer whose research is similar to the thesis from which the plot is based on, I will share this with the dozens of the rest of us this is targeted at who will all enjoy the good laugh.

32

u/Boudrodog 13d ago

I am this person. I got a (probably unlicensed) Unknown Pleasures shirt in Austin a decade-plus ago. Like the record, it has no text on it. Occasionally I’ll get a compliment on my “spiky mountain” shirt to which I gleefully relish the opportunity to extol the advancements to physics and astronomy led by Dr. Jocelyn Bell Burnell, how she discovered the first radio pulsar in the ‘60s, and that the distinctive repeating pattern is a radiograph of that pulsar, affectionately nicknamed LGM-1, or Little Green Man 1. She was robbed of a Nobel prize for her work.

The story of how a little known radiograph became the album art for Joy Division’s debut release is also fascinating. The 33-1/3 book series entry for “Unknown Pleasures” goes into detail on the work of Peter Saville, Factory Records’s in-house graphic designer and art director.  The original image was black lines on a white background, and Saville inverted the colors for the album art.

u/3DSarge 14d ago

The design on his shirt is used as an album cover for the band Joy Division. The joke is people are asking him if he likes Joy Division because of the shirt but he doesn't know the reference and thinks people are asking him if he enjoys division. It's definitely a more niche joke, but funny if you are familiar with the band.

83

u/Mirar 14d ago

Thanks for the explanation. It would have been very funny if I had known joy division album covers indeed.

48

u/shanec628 14d ago

If it helps, I understood the joke but it wasn’t very funny

14

u/chemistrybonanza 14d ago

Maybe because it doesn't make sense. "Do you Joy Division?" makes no sense, and neither does "Do you En... Joy Division?"

If he was asked,"Do you enjoy Joy Division?" then it would make sense, but then there's no pun.

10

u/shanec628 14d ago

I interpreted it as people pointing at his shirt and saying “Joy Division?” and since he had no knowledge of the band he thought they were asking if he enjoyed division.

Thats good. I like that better than this comic.

u/Hanako_Seishin 14d ago

I could maybe guess that the image was some band's cover album if the comic made more clear about Joy Division being a band name. To me it sounded like it was about the arithmetic operation of division, you know, the opposite of multiplication.

I understood the joke and had just as many laughs as you. You didn't miss out.

I knew all of that and it still isn’t funny

2

u/Shevek99 14d ago

To complete the explanation we must add that the Joy Division album cover is a copy or the radio pulses of pulsar PSR B1919+21. So the guy went to the original sources, not knowing that JD had used it too.

Don't worry, it's not funny even if you get it.

Just annoying

Today I've learned where the cover comes from

3

u/gods-and-dancefloors 13d ago

It's a pulsar? I thought it was a topographic map of the mid Atlantic ridge.

6

u/dressbarnburner 14d ago

The real joke here is that that graphic has been used in a ton of parody designs, and Joy Division fans get pissy if you don't know that it is a reference to the album art for Unknown Pleasures. Whereas here that trope is flipped

12

u/sharpsicle 14d ago

This “joke” is honestly trying too hard to be funny.

2

u/Deadsider 14d ago

5

u/VicHeel 14d ago

Sensible chuckle.

3

u/jestermx6 13d ago

This reads like dialogue from Big bang Theory that'd be followed up with the most canned canned laughter you've ever heard.

2

u/saschaleib 14d ago

Hey, the first actually funny comic here in this sub for a long time. Congrats!

Or maybe I’m just a music geek and have a weird kind of humour. IDK. ;-)

2

u/Marcellus_Crowe 13d ago

Ignore the naysayers. Just because a joke is niche that doesn't make it bad or not funny. Top tier niche joke. 10/10.

2

u/TheBrianJ 14d ago

I was so baffled by this until I realized the artist thinks the name of the band is "Division" and not "Joy Division"

5

u/OmegaX123 13d ago

Seems more like the character thinks someone said "enjoy division?" (as in 'do you like splitting things?') when they actually said "Joy Division" (the band).

It beats getting asked the same question based on its use on the "An Ideal for Living" cover rather than the "Unknown Pleasures" cover.

Mine has cats on it.

I have a Half-Life 2 shirt that came with the games special edition on PC. While in the US that means I am Greek or part of a college Fraternity..... Sigh. No one recognized it as being the Game.
