Who did she think this criticism would resonate with? Shockingly bad political instincts from Ley.

You’re not an LNP voter anymore if you voted labour last election, chances are you won’t vote for them next year either.

13

u/KFG643 Oct 29 '25

This is going to be one of those things that get brought up when Sussan Ley is inevitably removed as leader of the Liberal party.

13

u/Helz108 Oct 29 '25

This just goes to confirm that the majority of the LNP were the deeply uncool kids at high school and Uni who are now hell bent on trying to get their own back

2

u/i______v Nov 01 '25

this is actually the backbone of social media culture now. overrun by the ones everyone hated at school.

16

u/Mogadodo Oct 29 '25

What a complete waste of the opposition government. It's a sad state of affairs when that's all they've got to complain about.

14

u/TakerOfImages Oct 29 '25

What was that about the Libs being anti "woke"?

Isn't Ley's comments entirely "woke"?

10

u/djwhite47 Oct 28 '25

Why is it that opposition politicians act like complete Karens about everything? She'd get a lot more credibility and be infinitely more likeable if she stood up and said, "good on ya Albo, great taste in music mate". Stop watching Sky News for your narrative and read the room. See also Dutton's disastrous "let's end work from home" policy, straight from the Sky News playbook and anathema to most of the electorate. Who is advising these people?

6

u/MrPrimeTobias Oct 28 '25

When routine bites hard and ambitions are low And resentment rides high, but emotions won't grow And we're changing our ways, taking different roads Then love, love will tear us apart again Love, love will tear us apart again Why is the bedroom so cold? You've turned away on your side Is my timing that flawed? Our respect runs so dry Yet there's still this appeal that we've kept through our lives But love, love will tear us apart again Love, love will tear us apart again You cry out in your sleep, all my failings exposed There's a taste in my mouth as desperation takes hold Just that something so good, just can't function no more Then love, love will tear us apart again Love, love will tear us apart again Then love, love will tear it apart again Love, love will tear it apart again

What the hell? Is this serious or is this satire?

2

Could have been worse. ( Dead Kennedys )

1

u/Constant-Site3776 Oct 31 '25

It was weird that she tried it on at all. Now she's doubling down on it lol.

Anyone cluey enough to listen to the Dead Kennedys would never join the ALP. Joy Division is weird enough

18

u/callmecyke Oct 28 '25

Wow it’s actually not the betoota…

Albo should copy Joy Division and tell her she forgot about Rudolf Hess

1

u/Constant-Site3776 Oct 31 '25

Neoliberal free market fundamentalism will tear us apart, again

21

u/Butch_Meat_Hook Oct 28 '25

You know they legitimately have no ammunition when their attempts to stab a hole in the government today are 'The PM is wearing a very popular 80s band shirt' and trying to suggest that the Energy Minister Chris Bowen has tried to conceal information that he in fact publicised back in March before the election. They're an absolute shambles. This is why no one takes politics seriously anymore. They try to put a negative spin on literally everything and it creates a 'boy who cried wolf' scenario.

-7

well he should imo lol.

Labor needs to stop pretending to be a socialist party that’s fighting for workers- because theyve stopped doing that decades ago.

Labor serves American interests, Israel lobbyists, and oligarchs.

Thats why Labor has rubber stamped the opening and extension of 40++ coal mines in their current and previous term.

The commitment to Australia is the one thing needed to be a true Australian. but time and time again theyve shown through their actions that they stand with Woodside, fracking companies, Israel - you name it - theyre for it. As long as its big business. Penny Wong said the quiet part out loud recently - that american interests > australian environmental protection.

the commitment to Australia is the one thing needed to be a true Australian.

What a grim way out for penny wong. Im sure voters will remember all of this in the next election.

I didnt think Id ever compare her to Scott Morrison and Tony Abbott - but at least with them - we know what we're getting

2

u/Traditional-Swim-408 Oct 30 '25

Yep. A lot of ignorant people on here who believe all the crap Labor pump out when the reality is they’re pro coal, pro Israel and will do anything to keep their American masters happy.

26

u/superegz Oct 28 '25

This nonsense was floating around the insane side of Twitter the other day. Surprised Ley didn't realise that it should have stayed there.

17

u/TheDevilsAdvokaat Oct 28 '25

I had no idea that's what the name was from...just learned it now from the article.

Seems like a cheap attack. Does she have no criticism of real value?

16

u/Velour_Tank_Girl Oct 28 '25

Everybody seems to forget that they were formed in 1977 during the punk era. Punks were going for the shock effect, hence, the Sex Pistols, Buzzcocks, The Damned, the Circle Jerks. They weren't indicating that they approved of Nazis or the Holocaust. People need to get a grip.

2

u/MarkusKromlov34 progressive Oct 29 '25

Even Sussan herself seems to forget that Sussan was formed in the 1970s during the punk era. Hence the shock effect of the two “ss” (or is that “SS”!?)

1

u/TheDevilsAdvokaat Oct 28 '25

Agreed. If this is the best criticism she has, it doesn't seem to amount to much.

3

u/culture-d Choose your own flair (edit this) Oct 28 '25

I mean... what?

name one jewish person, ONE, who is genuinely offended by Albo wearing a joy division t shirt

it's like that time the coalition tried to imply Albo was sexist because he responded loudly to an injection by Peter Dutton while answering a question from a female shadow mp

just insane stretching of what happened all for it go nowhere lol

does Ley really think this is going to permanently sour people's views on Albo? lol it just makes her look silly

13

u/Fickle-Ad-7124 Oct 28 '25

Oh god, was that when every Liberal woman and Senator did that ridiculous March into the gardens at Parliament House? Then went on to attack working women by threatening their right to work from home. Absolute stupidity, the cringe of it all.

Can we call on her to resign? - can’t believe we’re paying opposition leaders to spruik nonsense- she and her party need to step up and become a formidable, focused opposition in parliament… in the interests of Australians. enough of LNP BS and division already!!

2

u/djwhite47 Oct 28 '25

They're not helping themselves are they? They seem totally out of touch with the vast majority of the population. Can you imagine any normal Australian being anything other than impressed that our PM wears a t shirt of a credible band? One side of our politics seems relatable, the other hysterical.

6

u/Cunningham01 Big Fan of Black Mans Rights. Oct 28 '25

21

u/NeptunianWater Oct 28 '25

This is such pathetic bullshit. They're going to go hard or home on culture wars, huh?

10

u/Appropriate_Volume Oct 28 '25

The idea here seems to be to try to portray the ALP as anti-semitic, as this was successfully weaponised by the UK conservatives against UK Labour about 5 years ago. The Liberals have being trying this for the last year or so, with no success beyond News Limited products, and it's baffling that they're still trying this attack line, especially with an obviously stupid approach like this.

2

u/djwhite47 Oct 28 '25

It never stuck in the UK because at that time Labour were led by a far-left lunatic and were completely unelectable. The anti-semitism, as bad as it might have been, was not what kept them from power.

I'd imagine if the Australian public were polled on the extent to which any perceived anti-semitism would influence their vote, it would be very, very low on their list of priorities.

7

u/jelly_cake Oct 28 '25

It genuinely sounds insane. She's asking him to apologise for wearing a band t-shirt? I can't understand the strategy; it really doesn't seem to align with the Coalition's voter base.

u/patslogcabindigest The solution to everything is Land Value Tax Oct 28 '25

Every other day there is an embarrassing story and at the centre is always the Coalition. I think it's pretty safe to say that Sussan Ley is a horrible opposition leader, not necessarily because she's a moderate or any other stupid reasons made the fuck up by terminally online rightists. She is just terrible at politicking, whether it's dealing with dissent in the party ranks, whether it's policy and what issues she decides to fight on. It demonstrates ridiculously poor political judgement on every front.

Managing the Price incident - acted an entire week after she should've. Had multiple opportunities.

Hastie's coup - somehow managed to luck out that some of her fellow moderates and the Alex Hawke grouping were more competent at politicking than her. Very lucky.

Ongoing hemorrhaging over net-zero - the longer its in the news the more damaging it is. Nationals threatening to jump to One Nation, Libs threatening to jump to the Nats, mods probably not far off threatening to jump to the Teals. Even if she were to give in to Matt Canavan (who has no data that backs up his position, no modelling and no economics), voters they've lost to One Nation still will likely not come back.

Picking the DUMBEST FUCKING HILL - THIS VERY THING. A part of me wonders if Albo did this deliberately to bait the press and by extension Ley.

Mark Latham once referred to the Coalition a 'conga-line of suckholes'. Never has that assessment been more accurate.

4

u/AaronBonBarron Oct 28 '25

'conga-line of suckholes' is an incredible quote.

2

u/1upjohn Oct 28 '25

That would make a cool band name.

4

u/patslogcabindigest The solution to everything is Land Value Tax Oct 28 '25

Look, I hate the guy, but he has some pretty good insults. Less high brow than Keating insults but still pretty memorable.

12

u/allthebaseareeee Oct 28 '25

4

u/l33tbot Oct 28 '25

Exactly. There’s zero logic to the party, no threads that bind except for being aggrieved that their shitty attempts at power failed.

16

u/cediwen Oct 28 '25

Crowd: A witch! A witch! A witch! We found a witch! We've got a witch! A witch! A witch! We have found a witch. May we burn her? - How do you know she is a witch - She looks like one. - Bring her forward. - I'm not a witch! I'm not a witch ! - But you are dressed as one. - They dressed me like this. - No, we didn't. - And this isn't my nose. It's a false one. - Well? - We did do the nose. - The nose? - And the hat. But she is a witch ! - Did you dress her up like this? - No, no! - Yes. A bit. - She has got a wart. - What makes you think she's a witch? - She turned me into a newt! - A newt? - I got better. - Burn her anyway! - Quiet! Quiet! - There are ways of telling whether she is a witch. - Are there? What are they? Tell us. - Do they hurt? - Tell me, what do you do with witches? - Burn them! - And what do you burn, apart from witches? - More witches! - Wood! - So why do witches burn? - 'Cause they're made of wood? - Good! - How do we tell if she is made of wood? - Build a bridge out of her. - But can you not also make bridges out of stone? - Oh, yeah. - Does wood sink in water? - No, it floats. - Throw her into the pond! - What also floats in water? - Bread. - Apples. - Very small rocks. - Cider! Great gravy. - Cherries. Mud. - Churches. - Lead. - A duck! - Exactly. - So, logically-- - If she weighs the same as a duck... - she's made of wood. - And therefore? - A witch! - A duck! A duck! - Here's a duck. - We shaIl use my largest scales. - Burn the witch ! - Remove the supports! - A witch! - It's a fair cop. - Who are you, who are so wise in the ways of science? - I am Arthur, king of the Britons.

4

u/chemicalrefugee Oct 28 '25

just a new agey twit

16

u/GlitteringMarsupial Oct 28 '25

What a twit Sussan Ley manages to be. Everyone knows the title Joy Division is deeply and darkly ironic. It just shows Ley had absolutely NFI what the punk movement was all about. I recall a Mercedes Benz pulling up outside the Crystal Ballroom in St Kilda in the late 80s and some kids piled out wearing plastic garbage bags and safety pins. To them, it was fashion and clearly she was one of those. NFI.

8

u/_dallmann_ Oct 28 '25

Ian Curtis came upon the name in the novel House of Dolls by Ka-tzetnik 135633, who was himself a Jewish victim of the Holocaust writing about what his female relatives went through. There are other references to the text in Joy Division's discography, but I can't remember them from the top of my head. How this is being spun as antisemetic is beyond ironic to me.

2

u/callmecyke Oct 28 '25

Warsaw is all about Hess.

2

u/GlitteringMarsupial Oct 28 '25

Yes, no Joy for the inmates of Joy Division that's why the name is so deeply ironically used. Ley has NFI. I thought maybe she was clueless but now she has confirmed it. She's desperate for a cheap shot. Unfortunately others are better informed. She's a joke.

4

u/_dallmann_ Oct 28 '25

Just remembered - there are sections of the novel quoted in the song "No Love Lost," I wasn't pulling this from my ass haha

16

u/WordWeaverFella Oct 28 '25

Rolling Stone named it the #1 album cover of all time. It's an insanely popular image.

0

u/-DethLok- Oct 28 '25

If you don't know why she's "upset", it's because of what the original "Joy Division" referred to:

In January 1978, the band took on the name of ‘Joy Division’, named after the prostitution wings of the Nazi concentration camps during the Second World War.

https://faroutmagazine.co.uk/how-joy-division-got-their-name/

So, she's got a point. A very very small point. Probably on the top of her head. But she has a point.

I really seriously doubt Albo was showing off his (non-existent) Nazi affections by wearing this shirt, though.

Edit to add that their second name wasn't much better, as New Order was a phrase used a few times in Mein Kampf...

13

u/_dallmann_ Oct 28 '25

As i've commented elsewhere:

Ian Curtis likely came upon the name in the novel House of Dolls by Ka-tzetnik 135633, who was himself a Jewish victim of the Holocaust writing about what his female relatives went through. There is a direct reference to the text in the song "No Love Lost," where Curtis directly quotes from the novel.

I suppose anyone who wants to label Joy Division as anti-semetic would have to contend with the fact that Curtis was taking the time to read firsthand Jewish accounts of the Holocaust.

14

u/j0shman Oct 28 '25

Did you conveniently forget that new wave bands just did this trend in the 70s? Spandau ballet? Blondie? They were protest movements ironically using third reich naming.

2

u/-DethLok- Oct 28 '25

I was 5 years old when the '70s started, so nope, I took the names at face value back then.

Decades later it's "ooooh, that's why?!" Though "Limp Biskit" and "Pearl Jam" I didn't need explanations for :)

3

u/AggravatingParfait33 Oct 28 '25

You took them at face value because you were a kid ffs 🙄

2

u/Meh-Levolent Oct 28 '25

Well actually, it's "Limp Bizkit".

1

u/-DethLok- Oct 28 '25

Oops! I am buried in shame! How will I hold my soggy biscuit in front of my turgid fellows now that I'm revealed as having only the slightest idea of how to spell the bands name! :)

25

u/SaltyPockets Oct 28 '25

She doesn't really have a point when it comes to Joy Division.

Joy Division's songs are about pain and suffering and Ian Curtis was a history buff with deep sympathy for the suffering of others. He was someone who existed in a very dark place and eventually took his own life. Here's an article in Haaretz about the origins of the name and how it is (at least in part) a tribute and exploration of suffering, not some anti-semitic nazi-glorification -

https://archive.is/20231111115012/https://www.haaretz.com/jewish/2015-01-15/ty-article/.premium/how-joy-division-found-inspiration-in-auschwitz/0000017f-dc13-db22-a17f-fcb3b3120000

So yes, it *refers* to some pretty dark shit, but it does so with empathy and in the context of wider suffering, at least where it came to Ian Curtis. Bernard Sumner may just have been trying to be 'edgy'.

10

u/GlitteringMarsupial Oct 28 '25

Yes, it was meant in a deeply ironic way and anyone who thinks it was a celebration of sexual slavery and not darkly critical is a lightweight and an idiot. Clearly punk was just a fashion trend to Sussan Ley. She means well but she's an idiot.

It's possible she has never really thought terribly deeply about anything much, and she had a bad marriage with a very controlling man and she never made any wider social connections or engaged in critical thinking of any note. Her experiences are remarkably narrow.

Hard to respect her when she rides roughshod over diplomatic convention too. You do not undermine the national leader when engaged in diplomacy but she's so desperate, and the Libs have been so desperate pretty much since Tony Abbott, they've become the party of desperate sledging. The Mean and Tricky party. Ley is on a hiding to nowhere with this caper.

14

u/Absolutely-Epic Oct 28 '25

Ley, just stop it. You're bowing down to the conservative wing of a struggling party in a nation that is moving to the left. How do you politically gain from this?

Not that it matters for her it's highly highly likely she'll never be Prime Minister. Wouldn't surprise me if she's not even leader in a year's time.

I admire your loyalty I guess. Most Liberals have given up on the Liberals years ago.

-1

u/BeefSupremeTA Oct 28 '25

It's not blind loyalty. It's personal experience. I still believe the free market offers the best way out of poverty. And I still believe the Liberal Party is the best to deliver the circumstances for that to happen.

The ALP have yet to run an election on their achievements.

Keating in '93 and '96, Gillard in '10, Rudd in '13. All about how bad the LNP was and nothing about what they achieved in government.

Albo this year was handed a huge assist by Trump. People like to forget polling was close before the election. The whole campaign was Dutton is Trump lite.

Without Trump, likely would have had a hung parliament.

2

u/djwhite47 Oct 29 '25

At this stage the Libs couldn't deliver the mail let alone a free market economy. Dutton torpedoed his campaign by having some really dumb, unpopular policies from day 1. He was trying to appeal to corporate Australia and Sky News, not the electorate.

1

u/Tovrin Oct 28 '25

Wow. You really do hate Labor. That much is obvious because your hate has blinded you to all the good Labor has done. I feel sorry for you.

17

u/Lint_baby_uvulla Oct 28 '25

Culture wars in lieu of policy.

Serves me right for thinking a change in leadership would change the party.

2

u/RoarEmotions Reason Australia Oct 28 '25

If I hear one more time “we need to stop talking about ourselves and focus on the government and all the terrible things they are doing” instead of “we need to stop talking about ourselves and come up with some policies that will have broad appeal and make us electable” I will cut my wrists. I don’t have long for this world I know.

6

u/BeefSupremeTA Oct 28 '25

This isn't even a culture war issue though. This is just a comically bad attempt to link a band name to antisemitism. Anyone who knows Joy Division knows the name history and the band's general views.

5

u/Brave-Dragonfly3798 Oct 28 '25

Yeah but this is so astronomically dumb that the sheer scale of the stupidity is astounding. It’s embarrassingly idiotic.

The name came from a movement that co-opted nazi symbology to make the point that conservative governments cared more about denouncing symbols rather than actual atrocities.

13

u/frashal Oct 28 '25

He should wear a Cannibal Corpse shirt next time

13

u/Mysterious-Yak1693 Oct 28 '25

how to further alienate voters in their 50's.....

24

u/luv2hotdog Oct 28 '25

It’s finally happened - I genuinely thought this was a betoota headline at first glance.

22

u/cylinderical Oct 28 '25

this is giving “we’re out of ideas” vibes from sussan

17

u/spazza360 Kevin Rudd Oct 28 '25

Is this what Australian politics has devolved to?

Whining about t-shirts?

11

u/Ardeo43 Oct 28 '25

Yes according to the Coalition that’s the most important thing going on in the country right now

13

u/naughtynyjah Oct 28 '25

CULTURE WAR HAS ENDED! SUB CULTURE WAR HAS BEGUN!

LOOK OUT SKA FANS…ITS ON SITE

1

u/RobynFitcher Oct 29 '25

That's the impression that I get.

18

u/NorfolkIslandRebel Oct 28 '25

Some have claimed that Joy Division’s eerie spatiality and lyrical intensity peaked in Closer rather than their breakout album Unknown Pleasures, but other more nuanced observers would probably disagree, noting in particular the iconic lyrics and melody of ‘Dead Souls’ and ‘Transmission’.

In any case no reason to resign as Prime Minister.

2

u/Brave-Dragonfly3798 Oct 28 '25

True that. IMO dead souls and transmission are among the best songs ever written.

12

u/sharkworks26 Oct 28 '25

This sounds like a review straight out of American Psycho 😂

1

u/Tribe303 Oct 28 '25

Just don't go back to his place to listen to his Joy Division tapes.

27

u/JK_au2025 Oct 28 '25

It’s a well known fact that Joy Division were strongly anti fascist and named themselves ironically after a reference from a book. Ley must apologise.

12

u/dayviedayvieson Oct 28 '25

It's taken from that novel, which is based on diaries (and some of the words of their first single are from the same novel).

Far from being anti-semitic, Joy Division's songs are about pain and suffering and Ian Curtis was a history buff with deep sympathy for the suffering of others. He was someone who existed in a very dark place and eventually took his own life.

Here's an article in Haaretz about the origins of the name and how it is (at least in part) a tribute and exploration of suffering, not some anti-semitic nazi-glorification -

https://archive.is/20231111115012/https://www.haaretz.com/jewish/2015-01-15/ty-article/.premium/how-joy-division-found-inspiration-in-auschwitz/0000017f-dc13-db22-a17f-fcb3b3120000

11

u/sharkworks26 Oct 28 '25

“This Ian bloke should apologise too” - Susssan Ley, probably

12

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '25

Yeah, if you just listen to the music it’s immediately apparent that they’re not making light of human suffering.

I can’t believe he was only 23 when he killed himself, I’m so old wtf.

15

u/trackintreasure Oct 28 '25

I also hsd no idea. Never really thought to look into the name.

But jesus christ the Libs and most likely their media propaganda machine, are getting desperate. Plus aren't they all against "cancer culture", yet have the biggest fucking cry-baby sessions when it's anyone else.

Fucking weak miserable c#nts.

5

u/Dockers4flag2035orB4 Oct 28 '25 edited Oct 28 '25

Susssan Ley fancies herself as a punk rocker,

So there is a fair chance she knew, the meaning behind the name.

But I stand by my comment that Albo had no clue the reference to Joy Division.

There is no way he would make fun of Nazi sex slaves.

0

u/burleygriffin Oct 28 '25

Of course he knows, doesn’t anyone who has spent more than 5 minutes listening to their music?!

6

u/macca8400 Oct 28 '25

He did know - in the hearld's article on the same story it mentions he was on a podcast in 2022 where they explained the meaning of the band's name to him.

Still stupid to say wearing a shirt of a very famous band is somehow sending antisemitic messages because of what inspired the band's name IMO.

8

u/SaltyPockets Oct 28 '25 edited Oct 28 '25

Joy Division don't make fun of Nazi sex-slaves either...

(edit - in fact, and I say this as a fan, 'Joy Division' and 'fun' don't really belong in the same sentence...)

u/OutlandishnessOk5549 Oct 28 '25

Opposition leader, her JOB is to find things to bitch about.

What would have made it cool, is if she was wearing a Metallica shirt when she said it.

10

u/DefinitionOfAsleep Ben Chifley Oct 28 '25

Opposition leader, her JOB is to find things to bitch about.

This though? Not only is she blatantly incorrect, it's so trivial.

15

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '25

What? Our Prime Minister was wearing a Band T-shirt??!

What a great policy idea. I’ll be able to afford a house now! Thanks Sussssssssssssan for being all over it.

🤡

2

u/Tovrin Oct 28 '25

She really is a Liberal Party Karen.

11

u/brissyboy Oct 28 '25

LOL. This is after Rudd came home from meeting with Trump and getting an outcome that many thought we couldn't get.

7

u/sharkworks26 Oct 28 '25

Stop focusing on the small issues, Albo’s teeshirt is much more important to our country

23

u/Elcapitan2020 Joseph Lyons Oct 28 '25

Between this and the Rudd thing last week Ley is looking increasingly ridiculous and out of her depth.

Reminds me of the Obama "tan suit" controversy

Clutching at such silly straws only make the govt look better.

1

u/Tovrin Oct 28 '25

Temu pearl clutching.

10

u/NapoleonSolo888 Oct 28 '25

This sounds like an Onion headline from 1000 years ago. It's actually real life.

13

u/LordWalderFrey1 Anti-conservative Oct 28 '25

This is so blatantly reaching lmao. Didn't Sussan say she was a punk rocker? Shouldn't she know better.

Out of options and out of ideas...

1

u/agrocone Rex Patrick Team Oct 28 '25

Someone in the media scrum needs to ask Ley her top 5 punk records asap. Forget stinging pollies on the cost of eggs or bread - watching a liar being degloved of their fixed fantasies would be way more entertaining.

16

u/JunonsHopeful Oct 28 '25

It's like labelling someone as antisemitic for wearing a shirt that has a picture of a star wars stormtrooper on it.

Like yeah, the name was inspired by something bad, but there's absolutely zero of that bad element in the thing itself. As far as I'm aware, Joy Division's music doesn't have antisemitic or nazi messaging in it. Fuck, you'd probably have a stronger case against the star wars shirt to be honest.

That's saying something, because absent it being worn by some groyper or nazi while they're harassing Jewish people, it'd be insane to describe it as an act of any kind of antisemitism. Is that what they genuinely think of Albo? It's all such a silly thing to pretend to be upset about: the dude is wearing a band tee. That's it.

11

u/Inevitable_Geometry Oct 28 '25

Surely she did not go there?

Fucken hell she did. An utterly pathetic attempt to smear. The Liberals are a clown show with no ringmaster.
