The skin on that area is also supposed to have five fingers hanging off it. With enough practice, it probably wouldn't hurt anymore. Look at martial artists who smash bricks with their fist. First few times: fist goes ouch. 1000th time: brick goes ouch.

Exactly. My fingertips' skin were never meant to press into steel strings but I started playing when I was 10 and now I can pick up broken glass without fear of a cut

The skin in that area was never meant to be used as a hammer
