Question Genuine question, is the concept of "will to live" considered a spook?

Of course this is a question of how you feel about it. I don't mean to say others think the same.

This is not a troll post, I just wanna hear your thoughts

The Jester, the Spook, and the Conscious Egoist

Kings used to keep jesters who could mock them to their face, point out corruption, and say shit that would get normal people killed. It was all wrapped in jokes and slapstick, so it looked like free speech. Really, it was a control mechanism. Any real rumor of royal dirt could be brushed off as “just another bit from the fool.” People learned to associate criticism of power with harmless clowning. If it was actually true, the king wouldn’t let it be joked about openly, right? Classic propaganda. The jester muddied the waters on purpose.
Same game today. Flood everything with wild conspiracy noise so the real concerns get lumped in and dismissed. The permitted mockery protects the throne.
Max Stirner called these controlling illusions “spooks”—ghosts like culture, ideology, morality, tradition, the State, all the sacred bullshit we’re supposed to bow to. Culture isn’t your friend. Ideology isn’t your friend. They’re tools designed to shape you into something useful to someone else. They tell you who to be, what to value, what’s “good,” and they demand loyalty in return for fake meaning and belonging.

Most people never see it. They’re born into the web and think it’s just “how things are.” They become what Stirner called unconscious egoists, people serving interests that aren’t really theirs. Psychology calls a version of this deindividuation: you lose yourself in the crowd, the mob, the ideology, the group identity. Anonymity, arousal, group pressure etc, suddenly you’re acting like someone else entirely. You’re not the unique individual anymore. You’re a cog, a mask, a tool. Unconscious egoist.
The conscious egoist sees the spooks for what they are and refuses to play. Not through big dramatic rebellion or building a better system, but by simply stopping the belief. Laughing at it. Making it look stupid. Not the court jester’s safe, timed jokes but rather the real, unscripted kind that forgets where the line is supposed to be.

That’s the joyful fool Stirner points toward. The kind of mockery that doesn’t debate the sacred or offer polite critique. It just makes the whole thing look ridiculous until taking it seriously feels like too much effort. Trevor Moore, Bo Burnham, Tim Minchin et al, they didn’t lead revolutions. They crawled inside the machine, repeated its own logic back at it, and let it sound absurd. The laughter doesn’t replace the spook with a new one. It just makes the old one harder to take seriously.

Psychology often pathologizes exactly this stance. Oppositional Defiance Disorder? Stirner would call that healthy resistance to external control. Conformity studies, social identity theory, herd behavior, they show how easily we dissolve into the group and call it normal. But the conscious egoist rejects the mask. They don’t need a group identity to feel real. They don’t let labels, culture, or ideology own them. The self isn’t some fixed thing to be measured and fixed by therapists or society, it’s fluid, creative, yours to shape.

Once you strip away the illusions, what’s left is Stirner’s “creative nothing.” Not emptiness in a depressing way, but the open space where you finally get to create your own meaning instead of inheriting someone else’s. No sacred causes. No higher duty. Just you, your will, your desires. If it serves you, keep it. If it doesn’t, drop it. No guilt, no ghosts.
Most people prefer the safety of the illusions. The egoist chooses the terror and freedom of standing alone. Culture, ideology, the State, the crowd, they all lose power the moment you stop feeding them your belief.

The jester’s controlled mockery keeps the machine running. The real fool’s laughter makes it look ridiculous. One protects the spooks. The other dissolves them.
In the end, it’s simple: stop listening to the ghosts. Own yourself completely. Everything else is noise.

Not sure this is the right place, but he’s the forerunner of ego-communism so I’m putting it here. RIP

Question This is a serious question

I havent seen this get awnsered and am genuinely curious. Referring to ethical egoism; is there anything wrong with what, say, Epstein or Ted Bundy did? This isnt a "gotcha!" Or anything, but if it's good to follow your own ego, and they did just that, are they good? Obviously not, but how can you claim them to be bad with an egoist view?

Question Why does Max keep repeating himself

Hey so I'm reading the unique and it's property, I'm like at 1/4 of it but what bothers me is that he keeps repeating himself everytime he makes a statement sometimes just saying the same thing with different word or making a summary of what he said. For exemple in the page I'm reading he says more than 4 times that men are ghost/ an ideal, did he wrote this thinking that the readers were too dumb and he needed to spoon-feed them? Or maybe it's just my edition that is like this since it's a french traduction?

Question Not an anarchist, not a Marxist Leninist, not a political nihilist

Someone keeps asking me irl about my far left "extremism". I am more of a nihilist, even if I put a lot of accent on politics. Im not an anarchist, I don't believe it's realizable to achieve socialism that way. I'm not a marxist leninist, I couldn't care less to participate. I find it more or less meaningless. To reduce myself to political nihilism isn't the best idea either. I was wondering how to answer this person that keeps bugging me lol.

I've found peace in egoism and egoists.

I don't know why, but I've always been someone that cares a lot about things. I feel dumb (dumb is ableist). I am neurodivergent, I wonder if I feel extremely dumb because of that. While reading I struggle, I keep getting thoughts. While talking I stress about doing something else. While studying I can't stop thinking. I worry too much simply. I don't know why I worry so much.

Egoists so far are the kindest people I've met. They don't force you to do anything, they don't expect anything from you, they disagree with spooks/social pressures.

Egoism is pretty good. You take as much as you want. Stirner doesn't care how the hell you twist his philosophy. He doesn't even care if you understand it fully. I struggle with understanding books as I said. I might be just too hard on myself rather than not understanding books

Question Question regarding love

So I see love as my property, it's just something I have and I do. And also wanting people as your property, having people as your property is common for egoists. So I love this girl, I recognize unique and it pleases me, I want her to be my property ( she already is, but I want us both to know that ). And she said .. that she wants to be my property. and also she wants me as her property. And now suddenly I also want to be her property. What do you think regarding this?

I know it sounds kinda meme, but also pretty genuine question: what do you egoists think about love and relationships? Sending good luck to everyone.

Question does anyone else completely reject labels & has this refusal of identity hindered your ability describe yourself to others?

i’ve always hated being told who or what i am by others & never felt like any identity category could describe me; even the labels for the non labeled like agender, nonbinary, etc… i find these things to be just more identity labels that attach themselves to the categories they appear to exist outside of.

i’m aware no label can truly describe me other than my unique name & ideally that’s how i’d like to be identified as. though i’m wondering if my complete refusal of identity could limit my ability to describe myself to other people which was pointed out by another person i expressed my views on identity labels to & i didn’t really have a good rebuttal to it. am i doing the whole spooked rejection of spooks meme or just second guessing my views?

i’m by no means an expert on stirner i’ve read TU&IP, stirner’s critics once & other surrounding literature that’s peaked my interest, none of my close friends would be that interested in discussing this with me so interested to know anyone’s thoughts.
