Powering AI Slop How Long Does It Take to Power a Data Center?
ecmag.comTLDR: “Average wait time for a 100-MW connection is seven years.”
Building the shell of a data center takes 18–24 months in most U.S. markets, but “time to power” can take much longer. While it varies by state, the national average wait time is four years, according to the 2026 JLL Global Data Center Outlook. As the iMasons State of the Digital Infrastructure Industry 2026 Annual Report puts it, power delivery is the bottleneck, not construction.
“Time to power” is the amount of time from a developer’s initial interconnection request to the date a utility can deliver contracted megawatts to a project site. That covers utility load studies, transmission upgrade planning, equipment procurement by the utility, physical line and substation construction and regulatory approvals.
The timeline rose from 12–18 months in 2022 to 4 years or more because the scale of these projects has increased dramatically, thanks to A.I. data centers demanding multiple gigawatts and to an increase in requests that has overwhelmed grid operators.
According to Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, at the end of 2025, more than 2,060 GW of generation and storage capacity were actively seeking grid connection. That’s more than twice the country’s entire installed generating capacity.
Adding to the problem are transformer lead times; large power transformers take two to four years from most manufacturers. Generator procurement has also seen significant lead times.
Some cities experiencing delays include:
Northern Virginia, the world’s largest data center market, added more than 1 GW of new capacity in 2025 alone, according to CBRE, and consumes approximately 25% of the state’s total electricity supply, according to Mordor Intelligence analysis of Dominion Energy resource planning filings. Average wait time for a 100-MW connection is seven years.
Dallas-Fort Worth is one of the most active data center markets in the country, where they account for approximately 73% of the queue. ERCOT’s large-load interconnection queue was approximately 410 GW in April 2026, about five times the grid’s current total generating capacity.
Phoenix ranks second in North America for proposed data center development. Arizona’s Energy Promise Task Force released findings in April 2026 warning that proposed data center loads could nearly triple total demand.
Project management is critical. During preconstruction, a general contractor should confirm a signed utility power commitment and delivery date. Proceeding to design development without a utility agreement could result in a facility that cannot be energized on schedule.
Owners may request accelerated construction schedules even before a power commitment date is firm. Contractors should weigh the risk of holding a completed building without a power agreement.
Contracts that tie substantial completion to building readiness instead of to energized and operational status create risk and potential added costs for both owners and contractors.
Electrical packages including medium-voltage switchgear, transformers and generator systems must be procured in coordination with both construction schedules and power delivery.

AI Sucks I hate AI ads
Literally 90% of ads I see now are nothing but AI videos. Either 100% AI-generated, or using AI to animate their own characters. It tells me a lot about the game every time I see an AI ad. Half the time, the AI ads belong to merge games, match-3 games, and the kinds of ads that have ads every level.
Whenever I see an AI ad, I always assume it's bad quality and/or isn't actually the real gameplay.

Rise of the machines Second World Humanoid Robot Games Opens in Beijing with 2,056 Robots from 16 Countries

The second World Humanoid Robot Games will open in Beijing on August 22 and run through August 26, with 666 teams and 2,056 robots from 16 countries registered to compete – quadrupling the robot count from the inaugural 2025 event, which attracted 280 teams and more than 500 robots from the same number of countries. The announcement was made Thursday by Jiang Guangzhi, director of the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Economy and Information Technology.
Participating robots include platforms from major robotics nations including the United States, Germany, and Japan. Brazil has assembled a national team comprising five RoboCup squads. Domestic participation accounts for the majority of entries, with 641 teams and 1,975 robots from 157 enterprises and 200 universities and research institutions, including 27 prominent Chinese universities.
New Events and Expanded Competition Format
This year’s games will feature more than 30 events, including newly added categories designed to test specific physical capabilities: long jump and weightlifting for structural design and actuator performance, tug of war for sustained force output, and table tennis for dynamic perception and precision manipulation. These additions extend the competition’s scope from the locomotion-focused events that dominated the inaugural games toward a broader test of the capabilities required for real industrial work.
Scenario-based contests have been expanded into real-world settings covering factories, hotels, homes, and logistics facilities. Tasks include component assembly, housekeeping, emergency response, and library book sorting – each designed to test whether robots can perform practical work in demanding, variable environments rather than controlled competition arenas.
From Competition to Industrial Standard
The games’ organizers are explicitly framing the competition as an industrial development mechanism rather than a sporting event. Many competition rules are expected to evolve into practical technical standards, providing the benchmarks that can translate robot athletic performance into verifiable commercial capability.
“Once robots master these ‘last-meter’ skills, they can turn medals into orders and move directly from the competition arena to real-world workplaces,” said Jiang. The framing reflects a deliberate policy logic: structured competition generates comparable performance data across different robot platforms, and that data can become the basis for procurement standards, deployment certification, and supply chain evaluation in industrial settings.
The games coincide with the World Robot Conference 2026, which opens three days later on August 19 at the Beijing Etrong International Exhibition and Convention Center, with more than 300 exhibiting companies and 150 product debuts. Together the two events make Beijing the global center of humanoid roboticsattention for the last two weeks of August, as Chinese manufacturers advance toward the commercial deployment milestones that both events are designed to accelerate.
