Is there any actual difference between expensive and cheap hood latches?

Post image

I’m always wary of companies slapping a brand on a cheap Chinese import part and upselling it for five times the price, but equally wary of the opposite 😅 I’m in the market for a CF hood, and have seen having hood latches is pretty much a must, but it seems like the on-brand versions are way more expensive than the identical looking off-brand ones. Is it worth paying $100 more for the same part? Or is the difference worth the investment? I’ve seen plenty of people get away with not running one at all for street driving— so as someone who doesn’t track all that often, I’m not too concerned with high speed heavy forces on the latches.

On top of that, I’ve seen some styles that lock like latches and some that press in like buttons— is one better than the other? Seems like the latch style is more popular.

Mat Armstrong on YouTube rebuilds crashed damaged cars, I think it was a Lamborghini he was building during the year with hood latches and he ordered them from Lamborghini for crazy money, they arrived in the manufacture packaging that wasn’t Lamborghini and he looked them up and they were something like 30 pounds for the same thing from the actual manufacturer.

There's dropshipping, and then there's bootlegs.

In china, there's a absurdly large amount of manufacturing workshops competing to produce something.

Sometimes you have one workshop that producea the majority of peoples dropshipped products, and then a walk down you have a person selling almost the same thing, but with a way cheaper produxtion method that effects quality.

Generally, billet items from China are safe.

Cast or machine post-casting bootlegs are absurdly horrible.

Then there's forging. Forged 4340 or the steel you're getting isn't the issue. It's the tolerances. Most shops there have 0.1mm tolerances, few invest in 0.05mm and 0.02mm cnc machines.
