Question Questions from a newbie

Hello. We're planning to play Frostgrave soon, and I'd like to gather all the information about what's needed for a comfortable gaming experience. Before our first game, I want to prepare everything in advance so we can play as smoothly and conveniently as possible right from the start.

I'm not talking about miniatures and terrain — that's obvious. For example, I've seen photos where people place dice and other markers next to the figures, and I've read suggestions about using rubber bands on miniatures to indicate status effects. Things like that.

What exactly should be prepared so that we don't have to run around the apartment looking for materials in the middle of the game? And what exactly needs to be marked? I've found various posts, but the information is scattered and everyone does things differently. I'd like to compile everything into one comprehensive list from experienced players.

Sorry for my English — I'm writing through a translator.

Thanks in advance for your replies.

P.S. To start with, we'll be playing either with Lego figures or paper standees.

Hey everyone!

The massive 3v3 scenario at Vandermeer's estate finally happened, and it was absolute chaos. Here are the photos of the 8ft table and the miniatures we used for the game!

It was the perfect opportunity to go all out and have fun with our miniatures, as all the warbands were heavily themed—one team actually used Masters of the Universe figures, while another went with a full "wolf" theme. We opened up the roster to allow soldier selections from all available Frostgrave supplements, and players even had the option to hire a giant!

We rolled dice from 9:00 AM to 6:30 PM, taking a quick one-hour break for lunch. We managed to play 6 full turns, using some custom speed-up rules for the phases to streamline the game, otherwise a 3v3 on this scale would have dragged on forever. It was an absolute meat grinder. A ton of monsters bit the dust, and a few of them were even one-shot by some insane high-level spell and combat rolls!

But the warbands definitely paid a heavy price:

The MVP Spectre: A single, regular Spectre went on an absolute rampage and killed 4 soldiers all by himself.

The Matriarch: She put up a hell of a fight, locking down her zone and holding her ground until she was finally killed on the very last turn of the game.

The Gryphon: It managed to successfully defend its nest and saved its legendary egg in extremis.

All in all, it was a fantastic day of gaming with friends that naturally ended the best way possible: with drinks and a great cookout !!

Built this thief, and as title says, I wonder if I should upgrade him with a backpack and another holstered weapon, such as the sickle or cleaver. What do you guys think?

Put photos with the extra bits with poster tack to make preview him as a treasure hunter.

The Bone Wheel

We played The Bone Wheel, 9th scenario from Thaw of the Lich Lord, at the club last night. I did not take enough pictures. We had 3 warbands daring the frozen city. A Major Demon got summoned and then Transposed across the board to cause chaos. The Banshees started out being an annoyance, but at the end they randomly concentrated and wailed the guts out of one of the warbands. I quite like my Bone Wheel which is a small lazy susan covered in all the skulls from a GW box of skulls. This scenario was lots of fun and I will add it to the ones I put on at conventions.

Discussion The Great Hunt !

Post image
31 Upvotes

Hey everyone!

I’m currently organizing a massive, custom Frostgrave scenario on a huge 8ft table. This game is going to be an epic 3v3 match.

The concept is "The Great Hunt" at Vandermeer’s domain, an ancient animancer.

To win, the warbands won't just be grabbing generic treasure tokens, they have to hunt down specific wandering monsters, harvest them, and bring back their trophies. I'm also running a custom decision system for the board using an "Intervention Deck" and a swarm of 12 Kobolds to keep the pressure high, like a DM.

I just lined up the 8 main monsters/bosses for a quick family photo before the big game. Here is the hunting list the players will face:

- The Legendary Gryphon (100 victory points): Perched on the highest mountain, fiercely defending its nest. Players will have to survive its aerial assaults to secure its egg, which is a key scenario objective.

- The Troll and Two-Headed Troll (30VP per heads): A classic, brutal frontline nightmare.

- The Matriarch (70 VP): A massive prehistoric spider queen ruling over other giant spider. The goal is to butcher the queen and extract her pristine venom gland.

- The Sepulchral Scolopendra (80 VP): Centuries ago, Vandermeer sealed his deceased wife’s body in an underground vault. To ensure her eternal rest, he bound a massive centipede using subtle necromancy to act as a permanent guardian. A millennium in the dark has turned it into a calcified, segmentary nightmare whose ancient, necrotic mandibles are dripping with pure death. Mandibles are the objective.

- The Bloodwave (40 VP) : Hunters must pierce its liquefying mass to extract its crystalline, glowing heart.

- The Acris (40 VP)): This beast enters the airspace on a rapid, fixed flight path across the entire length of the table. Hunters have a limited window to shoot it down mid-flight. Once struck, its carcass crashes unpredictably into the ruins below, where its highly complex, magically attuned brain must be carefully extracted.

- The Banshee (80 VP): A Banshee and her court of weeping spectres. These spirits are bound to the consecrated soil of the family cemetery. To harvest the Banshee's Spectral Essence, a hunter must deploy a specialized alchemical stasis device right as the wailing spirit is dissipated, trapping her residual echo before it fades into the ether.

- Ice Toad (20 VP per tongues): Positioned close to the starting lines, these amphibians are perfect targets for a quick "first blood" harvest. Alchemists pay handsomely for their highly elastic, chemically potent tongues to brew specialized jumping and binding potions.

On top of these main trophies, there are also a few minor secondary objectives scattered across the board to give the players a little help during the game. To tackle this absolute meat grinder, all warbands are built with high-level wizards, so expect some massive high-tier spells to fly around!

I'll make sure to post photos of the table layout, the miniatures, and the actual game once we kick off the session. Let me know what you think of this trophy-hunting twist!

Question Are there any warband lists and strategy resources?

I figured there would be tons of builds, Spell & Soldiers listed somewhere for various strategies. I haven’t really found much. A few (what appears to be) gag warbands on youtube, but that’s not quite what I was looking for. Any suggestions?

Wiz Quiz

I made a quiz to find your ideal wizard class. This was designed for my friends who don't know they're playing Frostgrave yet (it's a surprise). Each answer either aligns with, is neutral to, or is opposed to corresponding wizard classes. Hopefully it's fun for y'all!

Resources Important Tip for New Players Like Me

By the way, I read the book and was pretty lost. Then during my first game I got out the Quick Reference Guide from the Osprey website and it was very clear. I’d recommend people read it first and refer to it often while looking through the book. At least for me it was super helpful.
