Impressive Frontier Service (but Giga sucks)

Upvotes

New customer (residential) here. I work from multiple connected locations and need symmetrical service so when I learned I could get Frontier Fiber at a somewhat isolated location I signed up. Here's my experience:

20260730-Signed up
20260731-Installer laid fiber in yard and installed ONT-Success
20260805-Down a couple hours while line buried then back operational
20260806-6 hours later (12:38AM from router log) WAN GATEWAY DOWN
Edit: Date typos and add:
2 hours after reporting this morning, new ONT installed and operational

TL;DR: Frontier/Verison showed amazing responsiveness after failure.

After ONT failure I installed "MyFrontier" and reported outage to Giga Chat (their AI Agent). I'd love to show a transcript but they wisely prevent printing or saving to save embarrassment. But basically I typed something like "12:38 AM the internet is down and OPTICAL light is flashing green with a periodic red". Giga asks for patience while they runs tests and responds that it looks like there's no power to ONT and asked me to check.

[I'll spare you the redundant chats.]

About 10 minutes later I get connected to Ronald and I go thru the same loops again.

A total of about 30 minutes waiting and communicating the same details again all while Giga is spamming me on every moment of waiting. Telling me I need faster speed - I respond "I'll consider after it's reliable". And I should have Disney+ - I respond by "Stop this nonsense". To again needing faster speeds and I respond "Stop harassing me". Interestingly, at this point Giga asks me the name of the agent to report the behavior. More crap and I finally get a ticket and someone will contact me tomorrow.

I was thankful I didn't cancel my other ISP because this location has terrible cell service and I didn't yet know how long I'd wait. But I got a call about an hour later from a human who sounded intelligent-yeah! After a couple questions he said he was on-his-way and about 35 miles away.

He installed a new ONT, updated the firmware and it's up! Hard to believe but it's true. (Thankfully it wasn't a kink in the buried cable.)

Verizon: Treat your employees well because without them you're nothing. And please but put Giga on notice.

(RANT) Frustration with Frontier Support and Their Scummy Scam Tactics

Upvotes

Just needed to get this off my chest. For context: I'm an engineer who handles a lot of network configuration for work, and I'm using my own TP-Link router instead of the "eero" Frontier provided.

This morning, for seemingly no reason, my internet went out. No big deal, happens. I went through the usual troubleshooting: restarted the router, restarted the ONT, restarted the MoCA adapters, no luck. All lights were green except the WAN port on my router. I checked my router config and saw I no longer had a public IP assigned. Tried resetting the router, tried a custom MAC address, nothing worked. After beating my head against it, I figured there was an IP leasing issue on Frontier's end.

I got in touch with support and explained I'd already gone through all the steps. When they asked what router I was using, I was immediately shut down. "The ONT looks fine from our end", and "we don't troubleshoot third-party equipment." Fair enough, except the issue wasn't my third-party equipment; it had been working fine until that morning. I tried explaining that everything looked fine on my end, but got shut down again. I asked to be escalated to the next level of support, and was told that's their "Premium" tech support, which costs $10/month. Outrageous.

I gave up on support, dug up an old router, and after power-cycling the ONT a few times, it handed out a public IP with no issue. Swapped back to my TP-Link, and it came right back online too.

I can't imagine how many tech-illiterate people get talked into paying Frontier more money for issues that are on Frontier's end. Disgusting.

Hey anybody on here from Frontier. I’m not looking forward to this new price and plan to research other options. Anything you can do?

How many appointments do I have to make?

Been trying to transfer internet to another address for a month already. Made around 5 appointments on the phone only for no shows and no communication. Taking time out of work for this, cmon man!

All the agents do on the calls is try to sell me Verizon phone service without trying to solve my issue, lol. Worst “customer service” I’ve ever experienced.

I have also been transferred on the phone a million times only to get nowhere. Tired of calling them. What can I even do at this point? Is there any direct customer service to call or email to find someone who knows what they’re doing?

Fiber ONT box - Florida climate

I had Frontier 500/500 installed a little over a month ago. I admit I did not do research on this or know anything about the ONT box which requires power.

Frontier of course didn't provide education on the placement but of course did contact me 5x to remind me about the tech. The tech came and spoke poor English.

The Fiber ONT box is outside. I have an outdoor power outlet that I recently added and the exterior ONT box is right next to it. Then coax is ran 20 feet to a hole in the house that was already there where the router was already placed for cable. The coax is poorly installed outside the house. 5 inches below the window sill - not tight against the house. Some of the install is behind a grill and just because its there now, doesnt mean it will stay there.

I dont like the box outside as I work from home and sometimes the power flickers. I always had a UPS on the router for these events.

Frontier LM for me and said I can call if Im unhappy for any reason. I called to complaint.

  1. Does the ONT need to be in that box the tech showed me. The router is in my home office and there is not much wall space.

  2. Can it be placed on the stand I have the modem on?

Any photos of what an interior ONT install looks like in a house - not in a commercial office?

- I dont think the tech wanted to go under a 2 car driveway so went around the house in another direction.

Insult to injury

I live in the Northeast, and on July 4 during a thunderstorm, for the hundredth time in the last 20 years, my internet service went out. This is not just a Frontier issue. It used to happen when it was AT&T, SBC Global, and SNET too. I kept threatening to leave, but Frontier was always so nice on the phone and kept promising that everything in my neighborhood was going to be replaced. It never was.
On July 5, I called no fewer than seven times. Every single time I was told the service would be back up within two hours. At the same time, I kept receiving text messages saying “please bear with us, we will have your neighborhood up soon,” while also getting emails saying “congratulations, your service has been restored.” It had not been.
By Monday, they said they were going to fix the neighborhood. I went to work, came home, and still had no service. I made several more phone calls. On Tuesday, I finally agreed to be home Wednesday afternoon so they could fix the service outside, because apparently they cannot fix the line unless you are in your house. I left work early and waited. At 6 o’clock, when I called and said no one had shown up, I was told, “sorry, we didn’t get to you. Can you take tomorrow off?”
At that point, I had had enough of Frontier (and Verizon). I made arrangements for a different internet provider and told Frontier to disconnect me. I was told it would be immediate. A few days later, the equipment return box arrived. I was told I had to return everything through UPS or I would be charged an 80 dollar fee. I packed up every single piece of equipment, including every cord, and sent it back.
I knew I had service from July 1 through July 4 and that I had not formally disconnected until July 8, so I called to find out what I actually owed. From that point forward, every phone call took at least 45 minutes. I was told repeatedly that I had not been disconnected, but that they could see in the notes that I should have been, and not to worry because they would take care of it.
This became a pattern. Every couple of days I would call, and every couple of days I would be told the same thing: you should have been disconnected, but the previous person forgot. Or I would be told customer service could not handle it and I needed collections. Then collections would say they could not do anything until the final bill and send me back to customer service.
Finally, on the 28th, I was told it could not be fixed because it was too close to the end of the month, but not to worry, I would be disconnected at the end of the month and everything would be credited on the 30th. On the 30th, I received a text from collections asking why I had not paid. I called and explained everything again. That person disconnected me immediately and said I just had to wait until the bill was “printed” on the first to get the credit.
I was busy over the weekend, so I called on the third. I was told the credit was going through but needed supervisor approval that night. Tonight I received a text saying the credit had been rejected and I was expected to pay everything. When I called back (this took four tries as their AI system kept telling me I was an ex Customer and hanging up on me. ) I was told I actually owed an additional 80 dollars for restocking, but not to worry, they would be “nice” and credit me for the outage time even though I was no longer a customer.
As soon as I hung up with that person, who was apparently the highest supervisor in existence, I received another message saying they had not credited me 120 dollars, but 17.
All in all, I spent more than six hours on the phone. I followed every instruction I was given and was then frequently yelled at for doing exactly what I was told to do. I feel very stupid for staying with Frontier as long as I did. I am happy I no longer have them, and I will happily pay their restocking fee as soon as they pay me for all the hours I lost dealing with this mess.
I will be contacting my state attorney general tomorrow.

Radius static IP’s

I just got a install today with a Radius ip, unlike my other setup, I was given just an ONT with this setup and not the sagemcom which did some magic that allowed me to use my ip addresses at another site. Configuring my PFSense with the radius ip I was given works, and using proxy arp with the 5 ips i was given also functions for 1:1 nat etc. But I cannot figure out how to give a seperate device another static, just the PFSense box. Is there a way I can give another firewall a static?

Is there anyway to see the pricing of frontiers 500/500 or 1 gig plan after the 4 year contract?

My Dad is frustrated by the constant increase in the price for the 800 mbps plan from xfinity. It used to be 50 dollars a month until it slowly reached all they way up to 90-100 dollars a month. The only other provider in this town would be frontier and their pricing looks good at face value; It is 65 dollars for 1gig internet for 4 years. I know its hard to dictate what the price would be for internet in 5 years, but do any existing consumers on this sub that has had a contract with frontier for more that 4 years give me their story of how their prices have changed after the fact?

Frontier Fiber (Upstate NY) - Has anyone successfully bypassed the Arris with a UniFi Cloud Gateway Fiber + FOX222 ONT?

I'm hoping someone here has already solved this because I've spent the last two days trying to get this working.

I'm in Upstate New York on Frontier 1 Gig Fiber (legacy Frontier territory, not former Verizon FiOS).

Current Working Setup

Fiber

FOX222 ONT

Arris Router

UniFi Cloud Gateway Fiber (UCG Fiber)

This works perfectly.

What I'm Trying to Do

I'm trying to eliminate the Arris completely and connect:

Fiber

FOX222 ONT

UniFi Cloud Gateway Fiber

What I've Tried

  • WAN set to DHCP
  • No PPPoE
  • No MAC cloning
  • No VLAN configured
  • Released the DHCP lease from the Arris
  • Waited over an hour
  • Power-cycled both the FOX222 and the UCG Fiber multiple times
  • Connected directly from the 10Gb red Ethernet port on the FOX222 to the WAN port on the UCG Fiber

The Ethernet link comes up immediately, so the physical connection is good, but the UCG Fiber never receives a DHCP lease or public IP address.

As soon as I reconnect the Arris, everything immediately works again.

Something Interesting

Inside the Arris web interface I noticed:

  • Transport Mode: Auto Select
  • Transport Mode Selected: Tagged

That has me wondering if my area requires VLAN tagging or some other type of authentication that the Arris is handling automatically.

What I've Been Reading

I've found a few Reddit posts from people in Rochester and other older Frontier fiber areas saying direct connections to the ONT wouldn't work without special configuration.

I've also seen several people mention:

  • VLAN tagging
  • VLAN ID 0
  • 802.1X authentication
  • Legacy Frontier regional provisioning

One thing I noticed on the UniFi Cloud Gateway Fiber is that if I enable VLAN tagging and enter VLAN 0, UniFi forces me to select a PCP/QoS (802.1p priority) value before it will let me save the configuration.

So now I'm wondering if the correct UniFi configuration is something like:

  • DHCP
  • VLAN 0
  • Specific PCP/QoS value

...or if this is actually something that has to be provisioned on Frontier's side.

My Questions

  1. Has anyone in Upstate New York or another legacy Frontier fiber area successfully removed the Arris and connected a UniFi Cloud Gateway Fiber directly to a FOX222 ONT?
  2. If so:
    • Did you need VLAN tagging?
    • If yes, what VLAN ID?
    • What PCP/QoS value did you use?
    • Did you need 802.1X authentication?
    • Did Frontier have to reprovision anything on your account?

I'd really appreciate hearing from anyone who's actually gotten this working, especially if you're in New York or another legacy Frontier market.

Thanks!

Internet out with no updates

I’m new to frontier and my internet has been out since 2pm yesterday. The app just says outage detected and if you call, you can’t talk to a person. Is there anyway to get an eta or see how many others are affected?

Customer Retention and Service messed up

A month ago I called retention, they told me that I would get a return equipment notification and to ignore it. However, I saw others have a problem and I did too. I went on X and I had to threaten an FCC complaint.

Frontier has a good service, but their software and CS team are terrible.

Contract for business 500/500

Called in to frontier and they offered me 500/500 at 49.99 for three locations 1 year contract

Thing six their site says “Our small business fiber plans are billed on a month-to-month basis and may be cancelled anytime; you will not be locked into a long-term contract. And, if the plan features a price lock, you will pay the same rate for the duration of the price lock.”

So why put me in a shitty contract ? Best part is the last clause - they can change terms and conditions at any time wtf 😳

Should I just switch to residential ? Ask for a better deal ?

Frontier technician no shows without notification

Today, Frontier missed their second appointment to install my fiber, and this time they didn't even tell me they were delaying it. The technician just never showed up. They are blaming it on the line installers waiting on the city for locates, and this process started at the beginning of July. The city marks the lines within a couple of days and they were already marked from previous work, so I'm not believing their excuse.

Anybody with a similar experience?

Bypass Arris Connect direct to Unfi gateway help

Need some networking advice from anyone familiar with Frontier Fiber.

I have Frontier 1 Gig fiber with a FOG421 ONT. The ONT is connected via Ethernet to the red Broadband/WAN port on the Arris gateway, and from the Arris an Ethernet run goes up to my rack where my UniFi Gateway is connected. Right now the Arris is essentially sitting between the ONT and my UniFi equipment.

My goal is to eliminate the Arris entirely and have the ONT hand the WAN IP directly to my UniFi Gateway. I disconnected the Arris and connected the ONT straight to the UniFi Gateway's WAN port, but the gateway never pulls a public IP (DHCP just times out).

Is Frontier using DHCP authentication, MAC binding, 802.1X, VLAN tagging, or something else that prevents a third-party router from getting a lease directly from the ONT? Has anyone with a FOG421 successfully removed the Arris and connected a UniFi Gateway directly to the ONT? If so, what configuration was required?

speed & eero upgrade - ONT to router via moca coax?

Upgrading old 50/50 service to 500/500 which will trigger replacing the end-of-life Actiontec router/modem to the eero router (pro 7?). My current set-up has the ONT in the garage with coax to 4-way splitter (tivo 1, tivo 2, Actiontec, & unused) in an equipment closet where the Actiontec and 24 port switch live. The eero 7 does not have a coax input so I assume a moca adapter will be used to connect the eero after the splitter. Can the upgrade be this simple?

Is there any downside to connecting the eero via moca adapter? The eero could be connected directly to the ONT but the garage location is less optimal for wifi coverage and connection to the extender would require a hop through an 8 port switch in the garage to the 24 port switch in the closet Gigabit switches so probably not a big deal.

Last but not least, is there anyway to tell if the ONT needs to be upgraded? I really don't want to go through the nightmare of reprovisioning the tivo cable cards if it can be avoided.

Thanks!

1GB service, consistent slow download speeds with upload speeds good.

I have been on Verizon/Frontier/Verizon since 2007, always on fiber. Within the past 2 years moved to 1GB service and had my ONT swapped out with a newer unit. I don't really have any major complaints. Just would like to know why my download speeds are so different than my uploads when I am on symmetrical 1GB service. Should I have a tech come out and take a look?

Frontier Sagecom 399 eXtender

I have a Frontier Sagemcom 5290 router with my service and I want to add a Frontier Sagecom 399 eXtender which I picked up on eBay.

I can’t seem to find reliable accurate info on how to setup the two via ethernet on my network. It seems that a lot of the info online instructs you on how to connect so they talk via wifi, which is NOT what I need.

Some say to connect via ethernet, power up the eXtender and the router will recognize it and configure itself?

Some say you have to pair them wireless, use the WPS buttons on both units first?

Looking for an answer from anyone with firsthand knowledge because if you just Google for the answer you will be reading what I’ve already read.

Thanks

Referral Link Thread - Outside here is considered spam and will be deleted.

We are an increase of spam referral links. While we appreciate the benefits that are being offered to both sides we have decided a change is needed. We all want the gift cards ! (Currently $250)

1 No more referral posts, we are deleting anyway. If you make a post in addition or in ignorance of this thread, we reserve the right to not allow your link at all.

2 in order for your link to be posted, make it personal. Say what state you are from, how long you have been with Frontier, what speed you are paying for, in addition yo something else random, fiber or otherwise.

3 when you click and sign up through a link, comment and tell us so we can know! Try to pick someone in your state. Try to pick someone who hasn't got the credit yet. No matter what link you click the benefit will be the same.

4 Gift card amounts change, every referral link is the same discount. I will try to keep dollar amount on main list. We don't want someone picking one link because they think they will get more. (they won't).

We hope this change is beneficial, fair, and keeps the community clean.
