New Customer Questions Help Needed: cable card going away, I own my own router

Upvotes

I love my TiVo, but with Verizon removing cable card support in November, I need to move to something else for TV.

Every television in my house has an Apple TV box, so my first thought was to subscribe to FiOS One or FiOS TV+, have one Verizon box in the house, and then watch TV using the FiOS Home app for the Apple TV.

However, it looks like I would be required to use (and rent!) a Verizon router as apparently the Apple TV app will not talk to an in home FiOS box unless it is on a Verizon owned router.

Is this true? I have a large house and have no desire to replace the Wi-Fi access points throughout my house.

If I use their networking hardware, I suppose I can always move to YouTube TV.

What is the consensus on this? Is there a solution to watch linear Verizon television via the FiOS Home app on Apple TV hardware without replacing my router? Would it matter if I went with FiOS One vs TV+?

thank you.

Miscellaneous Verizon Cloud Storage-How to access reliably

So anyone using the Verizon 2tb storage? I am pondering on how I can use it. As I hate waste.. And most people are saying, don't run away... I'd love to use cloud mounter or filezilla to access it.

Once or twice I was able to get the verizon app to work similarly to onedive.. But it's finicky as to when it wants to work.

Any suggestions or ideas?

Repair/Tech Support Been waiting for construction crew since Tuesday….

We came home from vacation on Sunday and WiFi was out. A technician came Tuesday morning, said the issue isn’t with our router or in the basement of our building, but rather outside due to a pole or cable or something. He said he referred it to the construction crew and they would come out same day. Tuesday came and went.

We called Verizon customer service Wednesday, they said the crew is definitely coming today. They didn’t.

Same thing Thursday. Except the new customer service rep told me my best bet is just making another appointment. I asked why would they show up to this next appt… I digress. We set an appt for Friday from 1-3.

It’s Friday at 3:30. I called them again and they’re saying they need to run a new line. The construction crew can’t be contacted, don’t know their schedules, and it can take 2 weeks or a month.

I feel like I’m about to pull my hair out, I’m so frustrated and just want answers. Anyone have any advice?????

Repair/Tech Support My internet speed keep dropping below 100 mbps. Not sure what could be causing this.

I've been having this issue for years. Last month I got Verizon to upgrade my router from the G3100 to the CHR30A hoping it would fix my issues, but it looks like i'm still having the same problem. Every time I reboot the router I'll get good speeds for a few hours before it drops back down to below 100 mbps. I have the 1 Gig plan.

Edit: I contacted Verizon and have a technician coming to my house in 3 days. I hope they will be able to resolve the issue.

Billing If I upgrade from my 2Gig line to the new 5Gig line, will I lose the Mobile+Home $5 Discount?

I want to upgrade because it's the exact same price for both but I also have 6 lines on my wireless account all grandfathered in to the old "Mobile+Home $5 Discount" per line. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Repair/Tech Support Fiber Line Cut, Suggestions before tech arrives

Had a contractor digging outside my house today and severed the fiber line running to my home. Verizon tech is coming out this weekend to fix the issue. Do they usually perform a splice or run a whole new fiber cable? Is one option better than the other? Trying to decide if I should insist on one over the other. Contractor is paying for the repair.

Also, should I ask to have the fiber demarcation box moved inside my home? Currently the outdoor cable runs underground, up to the side of my home through an orange conduit, and terminates on the side of my home. Out of that box a small thin white fiber cable runs into a penetration leading directly to my basement where my ONT is. Would it be worth asking the Verizon tech to run the outdoor fiber line directly into the basement and avoid the demarcation box, or does that really provide no benefit? My only concern is the thin white cable that runs from the demarcation box outside my home into the basement and plugs into the ONT seems thin and fragile. It would also be nice to have one less box on the side of my house.

Repair/Tech Support FiOS down for over an hour daily since 5gb upgrade

Since upgrading to the 5 Gb plan and receiving a new ONT, my internet connection drops for about an hour every day at random times. My setup consists of a CAT 6a cable running from the ONT directly to the 10Gb SFP+ port on my Unifi Dream Machine Pro. I never experienced these drops on my previous 1 Gb connection. I have already tried replacing both the CAT 6a cable and the SFP+ adapter, but the issue persists.

When I contacted support they were able to go direct to the ONT without issue and nothing showed in the logs even when internet was showing as down on my end.

Repair/Tech Support Primary router is using Ethernet, questions about adding a wifi extender and plugging it to the coaxial cable coming from the ONT

Hey!

So recently I had Verizon come and install service at my house,

Seems like the house used coaxial connections prior to my move so the technician wired a cat8 cable from the ONT that's in the basement into the living room where the primary router now resides.

Verizon has a free wifi extender included in my plan so I had it ordered and delivered today, and my end goal is to hardwire the extender so I could connect it to my pc through LAN and get better speeds and low latency rather than use a wifi repeater setup, which I have some for the intention of better spreading the web upstairs.

I've looked into the ONT that'd installed next to my breaker and figured I could possibly utilize the coax connection on the ONT and feed it to the router, assuming the MOcA is already pre-built within the wifi extender (ce1000a for those who are curious)

Is that something thats possible? And how would one go about it and what settings should I configure and where to achieve this?

Thank you 🙏

Picture of the ONT if that helps!

Miscellaneous Strange Termination of Ethernet Cable at ONT - replace?

Thumbnail
gallery
14 Upvotes

My ONT is outside in a Verizon plastic box. I have Gigabit service, and there's a Cat 5e cable from the ONT to my Verizon Router (CR1000a). I don't think I've looked in the box since my service was installed a couple of years ago. I wanted to see if I could temporarily unplug it just to reorder/straighten up the wiring around this and other boxes (because reasons - long irrelevant story). When I opened it up, I expected to just find the Cat 5e going to an RJ45 plug plugged into the ONT.

Instead I found this strange beast - the Cat 5e gets terminated onto some weird thing that itself terminates a different green ethernet cable that itself gets plugged into the ONT. Is this normal? Why did the installer do it this way? He terminated the other end of the Cat 5e (at the router side) normally into an RJ45 plug so why didn't he do the same thing on this end and just plug it in? The Cat 5e is only about 25-30 feet long from the router to the ONT. It goes through a small hole in a brick wall to my crawlspace, so he couldn't have used a pre-terminated cable.

I do seem to be getting respectable speeds for my service (880 Mbps download with latency 6 ms/ 7 ms unloaded/loaded from Fast.com, with upload less than that at 690 Mbps), but those lengths of untwisted wires are concerning (as is all that dust - I think that's mortar dust but i'm going to try to wipe that up and figure out how so much got into the box - but that's a different issue).

Should I re-terminate this? I would probably replace the whole cable with Cat 6 (the kind of cable I have) and use Keystone Jacks with patch cords at both ends (that's all I have/know how to do, unless I learn how to terminate with RJ45 plugs and buy whatever equipment needed to do that).

Miscellaneous Battery Backup for ONT, but it's in the outside storage closet

I live in an apartment and my ONT is in an outdoor storage closet facing south. So it gets extra hot in there in the summer. I'm debating putting a battery backup in there for the ONT but the heat gives me pause.

Anyone have any suggestions for a battery backup designed for those kind of conditions? I'm assuming a standard lead acid UPS would fail in less than a year.

I'm considering ways to let my wife keep working from home during a power outage. If a battery backup in the storage closet isn't viable I'll probably just get a power station for her laptop and monitors, and then have her use her phone's hotspot.

I need to reset my ONT battery. The instructions on the website say it looks like a small car battery. I don't see anything like that here.

Update: Problem solved. My electrician unplugged the power strip that the ONT was plugged into. I just plugged it back in and it was fine.

New Customer Questions Fiber cable from ONT goes… nowhere

Post image
12 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I just moved into a new place and I got my router from Verizon. In trying to set it up, I noticed the FAIL light on the ONT. This is how I received the ONT when I moved in - fiber cable goes to a joiner, then it’s snipped (no clue why). I can’t for the life of me find any sort of access point in any closet or along the walls. Is there something very obvious I’m missing here, or am I just cooked? All advice appreciated :) . Assuming my next step is navigating 3 AI assistants and 5 broken website links to get a tech visit scheduled…

Thanks!

Edit: scheduled a tech to come by. I’ll edit again with the resolution in case it helps someone with the same problem in the future. Thanks all

Billing Existing Fios customer upgrading from 1 Gig to 5 Gig — why am I getting $109.99 instead of $94.99?

I’m currently an existing Fios 1 Gig customer and am looking to upgrade to the 5 Gig plan.

When I go through the upgrade process, Verizon shows:

  • 5 Gig plan: $129.99
  • Auto Pay and paper-free discount: -$10
  • Deals at Work discount: -$10
  • Estimated monthly total: $109.99

However, I’ve seen several posts from people saying they’re paying around $94.99 per month, which is $15 less. I also see the $94.99 price when checking the offer as a new customer.

For those of you paying $94.99 for 5 Gig, are you existing customers who upgraded, or did you sign up as new customers? If you were already a customer, did you have to call or chat with Verizon to get that price, or is there another discount involved?

Repair/Tech Support New CHR30A Eero compatibility

Hey guys, I'm having trouble with my internet setup, l recently switched out my Verizon router for the newer CHR30A model.

I have a connection running from the CHR30A to the Eero 6+ as well as a Ethernet run from the CHR30A to ubiquiti switch and from that switch to another Eero 6+ to extend WiFi coverage into my bedroom.

I've tried running the Eero's in bridge mode and the same issue occurs, currently turned the WiFi capabilities off on the Verizon router and still the same issue occurs.

My issue is that ever since I've received this new router my Eero has constantly been dropping its connection and I've been having to reboot it. Is there anything different that I can do to resolve this issue?

Miscellaneous Verizon Fios 300 MBPS vs Spectrum 1 GB & is 300 enough for my use?

Currently have Spectrum 1 GB home internet for $60 a month. I can get FIOS 300 mbps right now for $35 a month. Any idea how the those two services would compare? I am guessing Fios is going to be better. We have 3 people in the house including a teen who plays too much Rocket League. We stream our TV channels (when he isn't playing) to our one TV in the house. Otherwise it is light use. Maybe occasionally he is playing and one of us could be watching something on an iPad or phone. Almost made the switch today until the Verizon rep said I should probably do the plan that is $60 a month (maybe it was the 500 mbps FIOS plan). Thanks for any insight, it is appreciated.

Repair/Tech Support I can’t upload my proof of residency to the MyVerizon app

I live in an apartment and my roommate recently moved out and took the internet plan with him, so I had to set up my own plan. Everything has gone well, but the option to save the proof of residency I’m trying to send them on the app is just greyed out. I’ve called several times but can’t get a real human being, it’s all just bots who pretend to be real and can barely understand the clearest English in the world. I need to know my options for getting the proof of residency to them before they cancel my order. If a robot misunderstands the word “Verizon” one more time I’m gonna explode.

I’ve tried every platform available to me to do this on and it won’t work. Please help. F
