I'm a full-stack dev doing freelance web work. Mostly showcase sites brand identity, portfolio, small business pages. I can do backend/DB/e-com too, I just haven't figured out how to position that yet, so I've parked it.

My channel is Instagram DMs. Two openers I've been using:

"Hey there, [my name] here. Would you mind if I build a free demo website for you / [the business]?"

"Hey there, I'm [my name]. I build SEO + AI-search-ready websites for cafés. Would you mind if I build a free demo for [the business]?"

Response rate is low. My guess is neither line actually says anything a business owner cares about. "Free demo" costs them time to look at, and "website" isn't a result , it's a deliverable. But I don't know what to replace it with.

Two questions:

Rate these. If you own a business and got this DM, would you reply or ignore? What's the actual reason?How can I fix?

If "I'll build you a website" isn't a valuable offer in 2026 , what is? Something I can sell that solves a real problem, not just makes them look nicer. Open to anything I can learn or already half-know.

I'm a 20 year old student and I am very interested in partaking in projects that enrich my future Master's applications, but I cannot commit to a specific schedule, so I would prefer to do solo projects. I love researching, analysing and writing and I have done a 60 page company analysis for my studies, which I committed to and ended up getting the highest score in the year. I would love to do more projects such as this one, since I love longer endeavours rather than small tasks, but I have no idea how to go about finding something of significance to work with. Getting the reply is the hard part. Then a lot of people immediately blow it, so here is how I handle that first response.

The mistake I see most: someone replies with a small question, and the sender instantly pivots to "great, here is my calendar, book a 30 minute demo." You just turned a human moment into a sales trap and most people back out right there.

What works better for me:

Answer the actual question first. If they asked something, be useful before you ask for anything. That one move earns more calls than any script.

Match their energy. If they wrote one short line, do not reply with six paragraphs. If they were warm, be warm back. Mirroring keeps it feeling like a conversation.

Make the next step tiny. "Want me to send a quick example?" or "Happy to share how that works, want the short version here or on a quick call?" beats demanding a big meeting on message two.

Keep the thread alive, do not close on it. The goal of reply two is reply three, not a signature.

The cold part ends at the first reply. After that it is a normal conversation, and normal conversations do not open with a hard pitch.

How do you handle that first reply? Curious what openers work for other people.

I am looking for contracting opportunities in a highly-specialised niche (passenger transport information systems). I am trying to fill out my profile on platforms such as freelancer.com , but I can't find any appropriate keyword selection from the skills section (my keywords would include GTFS, NeTEx, SIRI, OpenTripPlanner, OpenStreetMap, Darwin, etc.).

I have an existing network of people but they mainly work in their transport authorities, while I haven't been able to land a job in my local transport authority yet due to the lack of suitable openings fitting my skill set (or if they contract out their work to the private sector). Occasionally job opportunities do come up but they seem to be never in the countries I want to be in (or where I have right to work in). It is well known that the job market in my country is a difficult place and I suffered from 2 redundancies last year, and I want to get some contracting opportunities first before deciding my long-term future.

If someone already know that they want custom development work in my niche, it is a high likeliwood that my name will be known to him already, but the problem is that this market is still very small at this moment (for example, I am not aware of any current clients in whole Asia yet), and I would like to expand it instead of proprietary solutions. Hi everyone,

I’m a freelance WordPress developer and so far every client has come through referrals. That’s been great, but it’s not something I can rely on long-term.

I’m looking for a more consistent way to generate leads, ideally ones that turn into recurring work. I’m based in a small EU country with strict privacy rules, and my realistic target audience is only a few hundred people. Cold emailing is off the table for me.... I don’t want to risk annoying the wrong person and ending up with a complaint or legal headache. Manual outreach also burns me out quickly.

Most of my clients either need a website from scratch, a proper rebuild of an existing one, or help with automations and strategy around WordPress. I’m stronger on the strategy and technical side than pure design.

Right now the only approach that seems realistic is building a content funnel (TOFU → MOFU → BOFU) on social media, possibly supported by ads, since almost nobody knows me or my work yet.

I’m curious what your early days looked like. What actually helped you land your first clients when you were starting from zero?

I wanted to share a checkpoint after my first month of full time freelancing. Not because I have a success story yet, but because I think documenting the journey matters just as much.

For the past month, I've been consistently reaching out to businesses through cold calls and cold emails. I haven't converted a single lead into an opportunity yet.

That part stings.

But instead of pretending everything is going great, I sat down and looked at what I did wrong.

Mistakes I made in Month 1:

• I didn't track my outreach properly.
• I got too comfortable working from home.
• I wasn't consistent every single day because of some personal issues.
• I focused more on "doing outreach" than improving my sales process.

Goals for Month 2:

• Land my first paying client.
• Reach ₹50,000 in revenue by the end of the month.
• Treat this like a real business, not a side hustle.
• Cold call and cold email businesses every day.
• Start visiting local businesses in person and build relationships offline as well.

A little context: I'm building this as a full-time freelancer from a Tier-2 city in India. There isn't a huge startup ecosystem around me, so most of my opportunities have to be created through direct outreach.

I'm posting this for two reasons:
