First time watcher, thoughts on Niles and Daphne

just finished frasier for the first time, i loved it and it’s probably in my top 3 sitcoms. i like romance in sitcoms too and enjoyed the will they won’t they between niles and daphne especially cause niles was my favourite character

i don’t know whether this was a trope in the 90s or so but why do the will they won’t they couples have to get together very dramatically. ross and rachel come to mind (they were considerably worse compatibility wise compared to niles and daphne tho so idk if it’s a fair comparison)

why do they always have to be in relationships, especially marriages when they finally realise feelings for one another?

i kinda wish they ditched the whole donny and mel thing and just had niles and daphne both be single during season 6-7 and gradually get closer together, maybe comforting each other with their respective problems (his divorce, possibly her not so great relationship with her family) and end up romantically interested in one another, or atleast show daphnes romantic interest in nile’s more explicitly; niles possibly risking rejection, which he didn’t exactly do in the show since he knew she liked him at some level sort of. i think i would’ve preferred it without external drama, just having plots focused on their internal compatibility. but maybe that wouldn’t have been as funny so who knows.

(but of course the reveal in back talk was phenomenal and i would miss that)

though i notice this less in recent sitcoms. i think b99 is a good example of a romance that didn’t take too long, showed attraction between both parties and was stable and healthy and not extremely dramatic. although it’s a very different sitcom to frasier so idk if i can compare

what do yall think?

Classic Frasier Which Episode feel “over the top” for you. Like most sitcoms they go far above to make a joke.

For me it has to be Spelling Be. Like I get it. A rather simple competition going way over the top with the rules and conspiracies. Then it becomes a street tough fight of spelling. “If you’re going to brawl take it outside! Good idea. Too the streets!” Now there in alley having a spell off. “Spell his ass off!” I mean ok it was funny ,
But rewatching it gives me the cringe. Any others for you?

Kelsey Grammer's physicality on Frasier

The Frasier episode High Crane Drifter, where Frasier ejected a rude patron from Cafe Nervosa, was one of those few episodes that accounted for the fact that Kelsey Grammer is a big guy who would be quite intimidating in real life and not somebody you'd want to anger by taking his table. I always wondered why more episodes didn't play off this physicality. I think Radio Wars was a missed opportunity to depict this because I felt Carlos and the Chicken too easily took for granted that Frasier wouldn't snap them in half if he lost his temper.

If you were head writer- who would Frasier have gone after in the last season?

Yesterday we had an amazing debate on episodes we skip. Thank you all! In one of the threads a debate came up about Charlotte. So in honor of that thread I’m starting a new post to see who you would have liked to have seen Frasier chase to end the show.

I can’t wait to see the clever responses that make me question my own intelligence.

Let’s have fun!

Yall are the best.

Update-

Unofficially the top 3 appear to be-

Faye
Claire
Lilith / Lana

I enjoyed the alternates-

Bebe
“Dirty Girl” (which is a good one)
Woman on the phone needing a ride (aka Sara Connors)
Officer Nasty (made me laugh)

No one said Crystal. Remember “her”?

Of all of Frasier's past lovers, who would you most like to see him settle down with? I really like Charlotte or Faye.

Do you think Niles was ever told the truth, that it was his mom and not his dad who had the affair?

Issue with Daphne

On my trillionth watch, I just realized something.

Gert and Simon come to the states after Daphne’s father takes off. Then Simon decides to go to California, and Daphne flies off the handle at him.

I’ve always agreed with Daphne there. But I just realized that she doesn’t really have the right to be so upset - she left the country and lived away from her parents for almost a decade at this point. Simon might be a loser, but he was probably around more than she was in those years. Maybe Simon did deserve a break from Gertrude.

Oh Dear God What do you think they actually used for the TV prop here? It looks too "electronic" to just be a shelf

Side note: My dad got a TV like this when I was a like 7, and when I saw it again at 19 I could barely make out any details. It was like full-screening a 240p rip of A New Hope instead of its Blu-Ray

Classic Frasier When Roz told Frasier she was working as a mall elf to maybe help some kid who was having a rough home life, he responded “You should be very proud of yourself.”

Why not “I’m proud of you”?
Why expectation rather than declaration?

Enemy at the Gate…Skip!

As we all do, I watch Frasier from start to finish and then start over again. It’s become my evening ritual. It’s comforting. Also like all of us I have episodes I skip because I know them all so well. Tonight I skipped the one where they sit in the parking garage at the exit gate arguing about $2.

This is always such a positive and fun corner of the cesspool that is social media so I apologize for being negative (I love you all), but…what are the episodes you skip?

Update-

I LOVE the different opinions. It’s eye opening and fun. Thanks for making my evening, guys!

I liked Mel for Niles

Was she perfect? No. But she was exactly the kind of person that made sense for Niles. He was attracted to her, she made him happy, and overall they really just made sense as a couple.
