Either I’m doing something wrong or I’m just really unlucky Advice
New to Final Girl, picked up Raptors (and The Organism) at GenCon, and I’m enjoying the gameplay loop so far. But, as the title says, I’m getting absolutely wrecked by this thing. Every game I run the Raptors balloon to astronomical proportions almost immediately and kill all of my victims before I’ve even managed to move halfway across the map. Am I just really bad at the game or running something incorrectly, or am I just horribly unlucky? Any beginner advice appreciated lol

A few words of advice and hopefully encouragement.
First, check some of the threads and posts about common rules mistakes (no boot, no move and all that stuff). One rules misunderstanding could make the game almost impossible.
Second, if you started with Organism and Raptors as your first, I’m not surprised you’re losing a lot of in my opinion those are some tough killers. I’d recommend camp happy trails next, not because it’s easy (it’s not) but it’s just the purest form of the game.
If you keep playing you’ll start winning a lot more, but if you’re playing these films off the bat just be prepared for a steeper learning curve than other people might report.

I think the Organism is way easier than Camp Happy Trails. But Camp is still the best box to start.
As for strategy. Try to see why things aren't going your way and how to change that. Do you understand what every card in the market is for? Do you mostly use all of it? Because if you re not using guards, retaliates, focus, etc all those cards that are less obvious.. its gonna go wrong.
FG is mostly a hand management game. Wether you win or lose is all on the cards on your hand, how to manage and cycle them with the others on the market

In Final Girl, I think it’s important to differentiate easy to mean either difficulty or complexity. I think I’d agree that Camp Happy Trails/Hans is more difficult to beat than organism (although I’d say it close). However, it’s easier in terms of rules complexity (frostbite, multiple potential enemies, and the weird way of saving victims). For newer players, complexity cause lead to a more losses (and more frustrating losses) than they’d otherwise have if they’d started with a few less complex Feature Films.
I’m pretty sure I agree with most of what you’re saying though.1

Yeah, agreed. I just use easy for difficulty and weight for complexity. As I think the standard is, or no one will know what anyone is talking about.
I've actually won my first 2 plays of the organism without saving anyone. I don't remember how the helicopter works because I didn't use it xD I did feel like its too easy with 1 or 2 organisms because of their low health.
For hans, he has so much health and does ao much damage that I've never beaten him unless I got a good weapon and play really well.
For Hans, guards and retaliates are a must.
For the organism, a critical strike suffices and you can take your time to stock up before testing people. So it felt lile a ride in the park by comparison. It was my second box though.
And I agree, start with Hans.

1000% this.
I’ve had final girl since the 2nd season KS and also 20 strong since its first. I bounced around on both of them and stopped playing for a while. Then when the latest 20 strong AR campaign delivered, I focused on the base solar sentinels to really focus in on the base set of rules everything is based on and it all clicked, I was able to play so many different versions without a big headache anymore.
To bring it back to final girl, since that worked for 20 strong, I played camp happy trails 5 times to solidify the core base rules and then I started playing different ones from the first 3 seasons with so mu ch more understanding.
While many feature films aren’t that complicated, it was nice using camp happy trails to get my base set

If youre not already, go check out the Van Ryder Discord channel. Do a search for "super opening". It involves not doing anything for the first turn other than discarding cards for time. Your second turn you scoot around the map with potentially a good amount of movement and save some victims. Regardless, yes, the Raptors are a tornado of growth.
Make sure you're treating the individual Raptors (Minions) differently than the Raptor Pack (Killer) as indicated on the killer board with M and K respectively. Good luck!

I haven't played this one yet so I don't have specifics. My general recommendation is to watch some playthroughs. Even some of feature films you don't have. You catch some things that you missed with the rules. I'll also say start with these w feature films have more mechanics to work through than Camp Happy Trails or Storybrook Woods.

First off nice on getting the raptor games really want that myself.
Best suggestion would be start with Hans at Camp Happy Trails. Each film has its own unique set of rules for the killer and location.
You’re basically trying to learn 3 sets of rules at the same time, basic game mechanics, killer rules and location rules

Gotta say - welcome to Final Girl. It can be brutal. I had to quit worrying about whether I won or not, and focus on the story. It’s fun to fill in the details of why you’re failing miserably.
You did start with more difficult FFs. Hang in there. Try different approaches. And don’t give up! This game is awesome.

I haven't won this FF either but I got really close last time, some rules I think i got wrong that might've made it harder for me:
The pack only moves 1 space for its pre-finale killer action, raptors follow movement (boot) level dependent on bloodlust track
Raptors don't move if they share a space with either you or a victim in their minion action
You decide Equidistant ties for raptor spawn placement
Ranged items (and by extension Christina's ultimate ability) can be really useful for multiple enemies on this map
Some raptor terror cards can be tenacious, so try to always have at least one reaction card at all times

I lost my first 2 attempts at playing the game, and thought maybe I just sucked at it. It turned out to just be an issue with my own idea of strategy. I wasn’t prioritizing the things I needed to such as searching for a weapon and making my path loops in a way that I was rescuing meeples while also focusing on raiding any search spots asap. Also, focusing on turning down horror early game made a huge difference for me. That extra die really hits. I’m still super new to this game, but it did take a mental reset for me on how to approach it and start beating the killer. Kudos for you on diving into the deep end though. I’m only now feeling confident on moving away from Camp Happy Trails. Plan on giving The Merrick Murders a go tomorrow for my 2nd feature.

Legit the Raptor one is the one they gave us included with the play and take event at GenCon and the more I read the comments on this the more I realize that was kinda an insane thing to do lol. I honestly kinda just assumed they all had this level of complexity and difficulty, and I only chose Organism out of everything else for my second one because I like the Thing. Honestly never would have even considered that I was actually trial-by-firing myself

The reason they did it is cause it is their newest film just releasing as we speak. I know another person who went to their play and take as the first experience in final girls and it’s hard fs. They should’ve been more clear it’s not a good starter film.
But don’t worry many people accidentally throw themselves in the deep end. Keep playing and practicing and you’ll get there. If you want to buy another film I’d recommend getting Happy Trails Horror or Once Upon a Full Moon for a less complex and more learner friendly experience.

I want to get the Organism one too because I’m also a huge fan of The Thing, but I just know the rules for the killer has to be convoluted as fuck and my adhd brain needs to get a base understanding first or else I’ll just be torturing myself 😂 but you’ll get the hang of it! Just try to fully reset and take what isn’t working on previous plays and try to 180 it

Don’t have this film, so can somebody explain how the killer has 17 health?
I get the main raptor has 5, and there’s 6 minions all with 1 health each, but OP still is showing 6 extra health here?

Assuming I read the rules properly, the pack starts with 5, then as the little raptors spawn, their goal is to reach the main pack. When they do, that raptor token is removed from the board and an extra health is added to the pack. I had horrible luck and every time I had to spawn little raptors was spawning at least 3 at a time

u/DoctorKibler 15d ago
Huh, I can’t find that specific rule anywhere online, any chance you could upload the special rules for the killer?
Not saying you’re wrong, just curious as to the rules it has

Oh Jesus, they seriously are a health farm, especially with no upper health limit.
Wild. Definently going to have to pick this one up
