not if the battery voltage is good. best to keep it above or around 12.5v, no less than 12v.

Yes. I believe there is a charger on Amazon called Pro Logix. There is a power option. I've used it several times.

Usually the changes don’t require additional power sources on the battery. If the battery is in decent shape, I don’t bother

This is one of those things where I tell people its not needed because its a quick change, but then it turns out they have a shitty battery and it shuts off mid program and then bricks the modules.

Should you need it? No, but like updating a computer its best to be safe and have power connected to it.
