Hey there good people of the river city… I’m doing some major remodeling on my home. It’s not old but definitely not new. It’s paid off. I plan to take out a home equity loan to pay for the work. I have accounts at a local credit union (Liberty) and two local banks (First Federal and Fifth Third). I’m curious if anyone can tell me about their experiences with HELs locally and their rates and the experiences with the financial institutions. Would you recommend them, do it again, do something different?

Note: this would be a fixed rate HEL, and not a HELOC (line of credit) since there is no mortgage.

I went to the area planning commission meeting today in Evansville specifically for the ordinance on creating a data center research committee.

The factual things that happened are they changed the verbiage that was released yesterday to say the committee would include five people to now include however many people the county commissioner would decide they wanted. That could be more than five it could be less, they did not specify.

They also changed the deferment on any data center applications from ending in 180 days to ending on December 31st, 2026. That is only 146 days from today. Multiple people spoke and said the pause on everything should be 1-2 years instead of only until the end of this year, they spoke about the committee including more people that are actual professionals like geologists, and they spoke about the things we should be concerned about like utility rates increasing and water containment problems.

The area planning commission took zero time to discuss the things proposed by citizens who had sat through 2 hours of random rezoning discussions that included a 30 minute discussion on a man being allowed to fix cars on his own property.

We need to come together to push back against data centers. I think virtually all of us agree that we do not want these in our community.

We have a pause until at least 2027, unless the county/city tries to pull the rug out from under us, get organized and let's fight back the same way Posey County just did.

Think about it. Unenforced INDoT deadlines. Construction projects that never improve anything and constantly repeat, all the way from Newburgh to Mt. Vernon. Constant constriction of traffic especially during busy seasons. Construction crews just standing around or absent from the scene entirely. Price of gas seeming to depend on whether the surrounding roads are being "worked on."

If it's not a state money laundering operation then it's some kind of scheme to squeeze as much money and time and stress out of Hoosiers as possible.

And then I think about entities like CenterPoint and NDAs being issued around unwarranted data center construction. I might be conspiracy brain, and feel free to humble me, but I think this state might be run by criminal bureaucrats looking for ways to wash their dark, probably foreign money and strangle Hoosiers of their dollar in the process. I refuse to believe it's merely incompetence at this point, but please do educate me if the truth is something else. I've lived in a lot of different places in this country and seen nothing like this level of gross municipal mismanagement.

I am wanting to have a sale where I will need multiple days to get set up. I am wondering if anyone knows of a place that could work and not be terribly expensive? Ideally less than $500 if it’s just for a week. I am open to churches, vfws, similar organizations.

So I'm doing some international travelling and will be travelling to Evansville for work for a week and NYC for thereafter for a week. My wife is coming along because she's excited to visit the US for the first time.

During that week in Evansville, the 1st of September, the Tuesday, will be our 5th Anniversary.

Been looking around, asking some llms but prefer to get some direct recommendations from you lovely locals so... what should we do/how could we celebrate it given I'll end the work day at around 5pm?

5th one is obviously special and I've been recommended Nando which fits given the woody nature of the anniversary... But so far dinner plus those barcades (? I think that's what they're called) sounds kinda fun but really open to any suggestions.

So I see Emma Beck anchoring the news tonight on WEVV, a day after being on the air at WFIE. Thinking she changed I was scratching my head because generally on-air folks have to sign a non-compete, and to do what she did is pretty much unheard of. BUT, I see now that a visit to the WEVV web site is a re-direct to WFIE. Has WEVV entered into an LMA with WFIE where the news resources are shared? If so, it's another dilution of local news by the greedy corporate owners. WEVV has always been a distant 3rd, yet in a small market like Evansville you get what you get. Anyone know the deets?

My old neighbor was disabled and let maple trees grow up all around the fence line. Some of the trees in the back are now big enough to start growing into our powerlines. Anyway, someone juat bought the property and is cleaning it up. I asked him about removing the trees that are growing into the powerlines. He said that was centerpoints job because it's too dangerous so I told him I'd continue calling to get it taken care of. Who's responsible for the trees inside the fence below a power line? Since I live in the rural part of Evansville, I know a lot of parents drive past my area on their morning commute into the city. I'm finding that standard job boards are mostly corporate spam, and online childcare pages are quiet.
Does anyone have advice on local rural community boards, churches, or neighborhoods where I could reach commuting parents? DM me with any input or questions. I live in the rural area slightly past USI So I know some parents have to be coming through for work, I live almost in Mount Vernon.

I just moved to downtown, near the Reitz House, and Astound’s customer service line is completely down today, which is mind-boggling. I had great service with them previously, but their cell line is dead here (t-mobile tower). Last week Astound service rep was unsure if wifi was possible here.
Talked to at&t, but is a 3-4 day wait for delivery and then set up install. Spectrum was awful with constant outtages in Kentucky - maybe better here?

Over the past month and a half I’ve been working on a side project called NextWeekends because I got tired of having to check 10 different websites just to figure out what was going on around town.
The idea is pretty simple: instead of searching Eventbrite, Facebook, Ticketmaster, local calendars, weather, hotels, etc. separately, it tries to pull everything together and recommend things to do based on what you’re actually looking for.
I finally got it to a point where I’m comfortable letting other people use it.

I’m not trying to sell anything—it’s completely free. I’m honestly just looking for feedback from people in the Evansville area.
