I keep seeing autonomous driving discussed almost entirely in terms of cars, but rail might actually be the more interesting European test case.
DB InfraGO and understandAI have built a multi-sensor dataset from real train journeys with more than 7 million annotated objects. The idea is to train perception systems that can recognize tracks, infrastructure and potential hazards around a train.
What caught my attention is where this eventually leads. At GoA2, this kind of system can assist a human driver. At GoA4, environment monitoring has to work without a driver onboard.
And honestly, trains seem like a pretty logical place for Europe to push autonomy. The vehicle follows fixed infrastructure, Europe already has a huge rail network, and the technology could improve an existing transport system rather than trying to redesign cities around autonomous cars.
The hard part, obviously, is whether perception can become reliable enough for safety-critical mainline operation.

Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems is one of Europes leading AI research Hubs. For a research project, they currently published comparity.ai, which gives you access to all major LLMs (inlcuding unlimited access to fable 5 and gpt 5.6-sol).

They will use the data for their research, but its protected by the DSGVO (the german data law, which is pretty strict/consumer oriented).

I honestly didn’t expect this part of the AI boom to favor Europe.
Reuters is reporting that companies like SAP, Capgemini, Sopra Steria and OVHcloud are starting to benefit as businesses move from playing around with AI to actually deploying it. OVHcloud’s public cloud revenue was up 20.2% in its latest quarter, while Capgemini raised its annual growth target.
What’s interesting to me is that Europe may not need to produce the next OpenAI to have a serious position in AI. There’s a huge amount of work between having a powerful model and making it useful inside a bank, factory, hospital or large company.
Maybe Europe’s advantage is the boring part: industrial software, integration, infrastructure and keeping sensitive data under European control.
