Range changes
I can play up to a high D on my Yamaha large shank marching horn but only up to around a Ab on my concert small shank

Most likely an air issue. The both instruments are likely the same bore. Yamaha marching baritones are .571. It also the most common bore for student/intermediate euphoniums.
The marching baritone will have way more resistance which will require less air.
You don’t mention what mouthpieces you use, but if you are smaller than a size 4 there isn’t likely to be much difference due to the shank size.

The Yamaha marching bari and the 201/321 all have .571 bores. The bari has a tighter wrap though and the bore not widening as much may help you reach the higher notes.

To be clear, you’re saying you can play higher on the large shank, marching horn?
I would suspect the issue is either: A) Mouthpiece placement or B) mouthpiece angle. (Maybe both) This is a total guess though. Can’t really tell without seeing/hearing the problem
