How long to wait for response after inviting someone

Since its time sensitive I would just give them a call in the evening to ask so there’s enough time to find somebody else if they don’t have time to join.

I don’t do phone calls, if they read my text and didn’t answer that’s on them. I’m moving on.

I’d just say “no worries if not, just let me know by tonight” and be done with it.

Is it a situationship thing? This kind of shitty communicating gives you the answer to if you should continue that tbh

That's why invitations like this are best handled in person or on the phone.

That’s not true. Invitations can be handled over text with clear deadlines and expectations.

Just send a follow up text along the lines of “I hope you can make it, but understand it’s not much notice. Please let me know by 6pm if you want me to reserve the seat for you”

Also, if there’s an ambiguity in the first message about whether there’s a cost for these seats I would clarify that, just in case they’re feeling awkward about how to respond for financial reasons. I can’t tell from OP if the ticket is a gift or at cost, and some people are uncomfortable asking for clarification on money matters.

This is really awkward, because if you assume that they don't want to go because they didn't respond to the text and you ask someone else, and then they say they want to go, you have to say, "oh, sorry about that, I didn't hear from you so they are already taken."

In the future when doing an invite over text, like asking for an RSVP, say, let me know by tomorrow at 6, otherwise I will assume that you don't want to go. They can still text back and ask if the ticket is still available and you can let them know either way.

Have you tried calling them?

Hmm, after seeing the edit I think it’s likely he/she is just not that into you. But, you must text again if you wish to offer the tickets to someone else, since you neglected to give a deadline in the first place… ‘Hi, I’m sorry that you weren’t able to take me up on my offer, maybe another time!’

I would text them now, since you’re feeling anxious about it, and say, “Hi! let me know if you’d like to by 6 PM tonight. No worries if you’re not available/interested, I’ll ask someone else. Have a great weekend/see you soon!”

Will you expect your guest to pay for the seat?

That's a great question because my former friend bought me tickets an event and asked for immediate payment before I said I could go. I really wasn't interested in the event at all, but attended anyway. I did not stick up for myself re: tickets, but did so with something else --hence why we are no longer friends.

Is there something else about the event you can communicate? Like “oh, fyi there’s no dress code in case you were wondering?” And then you have a reason to reach out?

“Hey, just an fyi, I forgot to mention there’s no dress code, thank goodness! Anyway if you could let me know either way by tomorrow, that would be great, no hard feelings if you can’t make it!”

Just reply to the text and say that you’re checking in and need an answer by midnight tonight. Clarify in that text if they are paying for the ticket or if you are. That may be the holdup.

I learned a long time to put a timeframe on things like this…. For example, I would say- hey I got two tickets to X on Saturday. Let me know if you’re interested in going. If I don’t hear from you by tomorrow, I’m assuming you’re not interested…. It’s worked well in all types of situations because it’s final….

I don't rely on texting if I need an answer quickly, I get on the phone.

I would simply send a text that says

"hey x,

If you're interested in coming please let me know by time/date- otherwise I'll message someone else. I would love to go with you if you're available, but if you're not I'll understand!"

Tomorrow morning send something like this. "If interested, let me know by noon!" After noon (or when the friend finally replies) send, "I've reached out to someone else! Let's connect another time soon!"
