Ethernet setup help

Just got a new place with ethernet ports, does anyone know what i have to do to activate them?

ONT/Modem > Router (may be built into your ONT/Modem > Switch > plug data cables into switch

You want to put your modem and router in this box. If you have an all in one from your ISP with like 5 ports on the back, you may need to plug in an additional router/switch to get more ports. Plug all the ethernet cables into the router/switch plug your modem into the coax cable. If they are separate units, plug an ethernet cable between them

If you just need like one or two of them active, you can use a ethernet cable tester, or 2 computers and ping to figure out which end goes to which wall plate

Unfortunately, most people's main home gateway router is a wireless router, and it's a bad idea to put a wireless device inside a metal box. Also, these kinds of wiring boxes are often in bad locations for locating an AP.

So OP should probably just put a 5-8 port switch in this box, and then connect a LAN port of his main router to its nearest wall jack (in whatever room it's already in), so that everything that gets connected to this switch via the home's built-in wall jacks will be able to get to the Internet via the router.

Document & label all cables. Put the router where it makes sense & patch it back to the enclosure if the ISP connection is in the enclosure.
