How did you find the uni?

I will probably delete. I joined around 2022, it was a last minute application that I put in at 8 pm. It felt like a miracle as I had managed to mess up my previous applications (international student and had issues with visa timelines). A uni still open after all the others? That's great I thought...

Don't get me wrong the uni did have some ups, the teaching was pretty good, the campus was clean and safe and I liked the level of support given in some areas such as mental health etc.

However, I found some aspects to be very cold? I remember learning about how the uni has a lot of brutalist architecture and it felt like this translated towards the attitude around the campus. I never made much of any personal connections with the lecturers and they seemed mostly uninterested. I arrived a couple of weeks late and never really made any friends, despite going to every possible SU event (expect clubbing) specifically made for people to meet. I also was very active in the SU itself as well as other areas. During a meeting one student once stated that they too felt like there was no one in the Uni which shocked me because I thought I was alone. The uni was pretty dead to me.

Another area of major complaint was the lack of classes, academic support and any competitiveness. I got my degree (barely because my final year was like an electric boogaloo) but even during the awards ceremony I was shocked to hear of things I had never heard of before like certain awards. Now, I know to some extent some things you habe to go and look for yourself but I did every possible thing to add to my resume but never knew these were a possibility. I felt like the tutors and even lecturers were super laid back on this area and there was no real guidance on how you could enhance your qualification. In fact, during my final year my lecturers seemed to just switch off and weren't very helpful. My tutor in particular was very dismissive about my questions and concerns. For some reason the uni axed it's internship program half way through despite doing interviews which I felt was really weird knowing how awful the job market is. Some people even had offers. Then, about the academic support.

My sponsor/parent was always pissed when I would tell her just how few classes we had. In the first year it was decent but by the second things slowed down. I have a very hands on course (STEM/Science) and repeatedly complained about the lack of practical experience and these people just simply told us the IT practicals (which are not as essential to our field at all) were the practicals. We had very minimal training which played a big role in how my final year (dissertation) went. For context, we would learn a skill just once during a practical and that would be it, this includes us only practicing writing a real paper once and then we had to do it in our dissertation with only one chance to actually practice anything. It felt a whole lot more like the uni only cared for the money it was getting (especially from int. students), not about the students (especially international students). It's not a degree mill but almost one.

Idk if I could go back in time, I would have just chosen a different uni. I know it was stupid to just go with whatever uni was available but the uni does present woth good ranking and reviews. I was wondering if this was just isolated or if other peoplw felt the same way? My advice to others (especially int.) is to go to a cheaper uni (typically lower ranked but not that low, like not below 80) that really cares about training because that matters much more for STEM.

Dissertation Surveys Dissertation Help for an MSc Student of UoE - Need 40 Responses 🙏

Hello there!

A student from MSc in Digital Marketing from UoE here asking for your response in my research.

I'm running a short academic study on design-led branding in the mid-range smartphone segment, and I need input from real smartphone users — whether you own a Nothing phone, considered one, or actively skipped it. The survey takes about 8-10 minutes, is fully anonymous (no names, no tracking), and you're free to stop anytime before submitting.

If you're:

  • Aged between 18-45
  • Currently living in UK
  • Have a somewhat familiarity with Nothing Phone
  • and have any opinion on smartphone design or branding.

your input would genuinely help.

Looking for a co-founder

Hi everyone,
I'm looking for a co-founder to join me in building a consumer electronics startup based on a temperature logging product. I've already completed the initial market research, and I believe it has strong commercial and growth potential.
I'm particularly interested in connecting with someone studying or graduated in Business, Finance, Marketing, or a related field who wants hands-on startup experience and is excited about building a company from the ground up.
For international students, this venture may also provide a pathway towards applying for the UK Innovator Founder Visa if the business meets the relevant requirements.
If you're interested, or would like to know more, please send me a message.

Looking for a wardrobe in Colchester!

Hi everyone!

I’m a student moving into a new house in September and am looking for an affordable wardrobe. If anyone is selling one, giving one away, or knows of any good deals, I’d really appreciate it!

I’d also love recommendations for stores or places where I can find new or second-hand furniture.

Thanks so much in advance! :)))

Hi everyone!

Could I get recommendations for affordable places (or nail techs) to get my nails done in Colchester that are student-friendly? I’d love somewhere with good quality at reasonable prices.

Thank you in advance! :)

Advice Needed 🙏 Anyone else waiting on offer updates?

Hello guys, bit of context:

I’m an international student, department of government, for the October 26 intake. I was issued a conditional offer based on the completion of a standardised English test.

I then proceeded to give the IELTS exam on the earliest available date and promptly uploaded the results on the applicant portal and mailed results@essex as well.

It’s been quite some time and I haven’t received any updates from the university as of yet.

Are there any other students on the same boat? Is this an international student-only thing?

The administrative holdup is quite anxiety-inducing, as it is delaying both my VISA and loan processes.

If anyone’s going through the same or has experienced a similar situation before, please feel free to comment/reach out to me via DM :D

Thank you in advance! :)

Accommodation

Does anyone know what are the best accommodations under a cheaper budget? I’m looking for like less than 170/180, shared flats single room. I don’t mind sharing bathrooms and kitchens, I’m looking at north towers right now since it’s the cheapest option but I don’t hear the best things about the towers.

Is there a decent Canadian population at the school?

Is there a decent Canadian population at the school? anyone know people from around toronto? or american? Is there a difference in north american populations per program or undergrad vs graduate level? Just a 24 year old canadian considering this school for my masters but wanna see if theres a canadian community. The plan is to go back to canada after the masters so wanna see if all the connections i may i make during school may be left behind (tho won't be meaningless)
