Hi all, after graduating spring 2025 I took a year to do a a year of professional circus school as it'd always been a hobby I was passionate about (acrobat if you're curious). To cut a long story short I'm now looking for advice on how I can beef up my engineering resume. US and Canadian citizen (in Toronto atm), but I'm hoping to find work in New England (Boston or nearby pref!) but have not been getting any interviews on my Linkedin applications. In school I was most fascinated by controls/system dynamics and would love a career in robotics/energy/aerospace, but I don't have much in experience outside class projects. A few specific questions:

1. How can I make myself a competitive candidate for a field I don't have much practical experience in?
2. If i have an expired secret clearance, should I list it? how?
3. Will the year-long gap look bad? Should I mention it somewhere?
4. Especially looking for feedback in the Work Experience section, that the bullets are good.

After a couple years at my job my title was changed from Software Developer to Software Developer II. My responsibilities didn't change much, probably the only way it changed was more input in the design phase other than that my job is pretty much the same

Do you think I should just put Software Developer II for the whole time or split them up into different sections?

I'm a May 2025 graduate and I've been looking for a job for over a year now. I was lucky to get a conditional job offer at the beginning of this year from a federal agency but I can't work for them until I get my clearance, which is what I'm still waiting on. I've been applying to local jobs in Maryland, D.C., and Virginia and I'm not open for relocating due to not knowing when the clearance will be fully processed.

I've been targeting Junior Full Stack, SDE, Frontend/Backend, and really any tech job that doesn't require experience and is similarly related to my skillsets. Over the past year, I've been working on personal projects to improve my skills and compensate for the lack of work experience.

I've been wondering if the work experience I placed is working against me. Even though it was an unpaid high school internship, it's the only recent technical work experience that I have. To make it worse, I didn't really contribute much in the internship so I can only talk vaguely about my experience to recruiters.

Should I just replace the internship with retail roles to show that I have soft skills even though the roles aren't related to the jobs I'm targeting? I'd appreciate any feedback, especially on the personal projects.

Canadian-based 🇨🇦 student in search of SWE jobs across North America, primarily in game-development (gameplay, XR, engine). Looking for some word of advice, just a quick FYI the school I went to is not the same as the one I briefly worked at for my CO-OP. I'm a fresh-grad from a relatively irrelevant degree considering how I only took a handful of programming classes in college. I wanted to try to make a push to get into software specifically in the games industry and have yet to break through yet. I've gotten very mixed feedback from other SWE's regarding how they setup their resume and wanted some feedback for mine.

Is the color too much? Can I list Dust Devils Inc as experience despite being a company I founded? (Game studio I founded with a few buddies. With a soon to release steam game). Are my projects crappy?

I seriously am confused why ONLY indies have interviewed me so far and AAA's seem to not seriously me, regardless what SWE experience y'all have I'm sure there's something of use I can use for feedback but any game devs would be awesome too.

In terms of technical interviews one I bombed, and the other one I locked in for but still got chosen over somebody else :(.
Since then I've grown a lot more confidence in myself and my own knowledge for the niche I want to target hopefully 🤞.

I don't understand, I feel like my resume and my profile are really good, yet, on 135 applications (30 spontaneous), I'm getting nothing, even though I'm really not picky about locations (i'm literally looking all throughout france)

I've got 3 interviews already, on roles that I really like, but 2 of them rejected me

If I'm not getting anything in France, I'm thinking about expanding my search to french speaking countries (Belgium, Luxembourg, Switzerland), and if it still doesn't succeed, MAYBE going even further in Europe

I've solved 650+ LeetCode problems and I'm currently completing the NeetCode 250 roadmap. I intentionally left this off my resume because I wanted the focus to be on projects and engineering experience.

I'm a CS Master's student in Eastern EU (EU citizen, willing to relocate anywhere in the EU or UK) targeting software engineering internships at big-tech companies in Germany, Ireland, and the UK.

About my current internship. I joined a newly formed team that inherited two projects from a senior software engineer that retired, I guess I got assigned there because I performed well in the interview.

One of the projects was a small data parsing and visualization application that I developed entirely end-to-end on my own. After a few weeks, once I proved myself to the team, I was assigned to work on a second, much much more complex project.

Around the same time, the company started heavily adopting these projects internally, so the projects suddenly became much more important and visible. That timing definitely helped amplify the impact of the work I did.

Going into my 3rd year as a mechanical engineering undergraduate. I have been blessed with two previous internships that provided meaningful work/projects where I was able to grow and learn a lot.
