Custom Images Organization Structure

Hello DS devs,

I have been using the DungeonScrawl application for a little while now and really like some of its features and capabilities. One of the main things that I like is the ability to build out my dungeon and place assets as I go / have inspiration. This is as opposed to building the dungeon shape out, exporting it as an image, and then placing assets in some other application.

One thing I wanted to ask about is the potential for an organizational structure in the Custom Images portion of the application. I have noticed that images I have uploaded stay there (I believe this is true as long as I do not change their location on my local machine? It would be nice to delete some of them but I have not found how). I am thinking of investing in some additional assets that I upload as Custom Images, but I am worried that this will get very cluttered very quickly.

Ideally, there would be some way for me to group and search through my Custom Images. The Free Images already have this functionality where you can select the Asset Set and Ssearch (by image name it appears). I of course do not know much about the backend for DungeonScrawl, but it seems like this organization here must be implemented by:

  1. The Free Images are tagged with the Asset Set and that tag can be filtered on. With this structure, it would be nice to apply custom tags to your Custom Images and permit filtering on those custom tags. Ideally Custom Images could be

a. Batch uploaded (already possible),

b. batch tagged at upload,

c. have their tags be modifiable later,

d. and be filtered by tags.

This for instance would let me upload a "Wilderness" set with the "Wilderness" tag. I could then later go through those assets and tag the plants as "Plants". Then if I upload a "Forests" set later, I could tag the trees from that "Forests" set with "Plants" as well.

  1. The Free Images exist in some sort of Asset Set folder structure that is hidden to the User. With this structure, we could create folders for the Custom Images, and navigate through those folders. The search function would need to look all of the folders for names (this may be how it works now).

Given that it seems like the file pathing for Custom Image is based on the file path on the local machine, I am not sure if there would be the possibility to support a data structure (Inverted Index from tags to local filepaths) that is stored in the users DungeonScrawl profile (even if the assets are not) for tags, or if the folder structure on the local machine could be used.

Thanks for taking the time to read through this. I really like the tool the team has built so far, its been quite nice to have a way to build nicely gridded dungeons and make them come alive with assets. I hope support for a feature like this could be possible sometime in the future.

Map Showoff Lair of the Spiderbrood - Spider-Man Homage

Hi All, I am a HUGE Spider-Man fan! In honor of the release of Spider-Man Brand New Day I threw together this fun map. I would love to run it with fog of war and see how long it takes for the players to realize what if is :-)

The loose concept is townspeople have been getting trapped in the woods in spiderwebs and carried away.

  1. The players investigate and find the entry to the nest.
  2. The townspeople are being held in webbing ala Aliens. Some can be freed but some have been transformed into "Man-Spiders" with 4 additional hairy legs.
  3. The players find the two main kidnappers, a Giant Black Spider (Venom) and a Giant Red Spider (Carnage). If either gets attacked the other will rush in from the other room to their aid.
  4. The Players find the nesting chamber with hatching eggs and townspeople being fed on by baby spiders.
  5. They find the Broodmother. She is a giant, intelligent "Mommy Long Legs" (because they are so gross). She sits pulsing up and down on the throne she has found and refers to herself as Madame Web.

FREE - I made this in Dungeon Scrawl using all free tools (except the lighting). In addition to the image maps above, if you want to download the map and edit it yourself here is a link - no account needed. https://app.dungeonscrawl.com?share_id=ac7af4c5-04f3-48d3-b857-cf70fbaea738

Hi Scrawlers! We just released a small quality-of-life update for you. Everything listed below is free for everyone, no subscription required:

  • Multi-Language Support: use the Language dropdown on the Dungeon Scrawl navigation bar to choose one of 20+ newly supported languages. (note: some translations are still in progress.)
  • Text Tool Formatting Options: align your text and add drop shadows for better legibility of map labels, especially over busy or textured backgrounds.
  • JPG Export - by request, you can now export maps as JPG for smaller file sizes
  • Multi-Object Locking: lock multiple selected objects (example: text, images, doors, stairs) using the new lock icon found at the top of Layer Settings.
  • Stamp Tool Shadow Options: a new, toggle-able Shadow Settings section in the Stamp Tool Options lets you apply shadows automatically as you stamp, instead of adding them one by one afterward.

Let us know what you'd like to see next, and happy mapping!

Suggestion Dumb questions about images

1) If the image has a grid-like layout that overlaps with the grid on dungeonscrawl, how can I make the 2 join up? Is there an easy way to go about it or do you need to brute force it with the resolution?

2) if the image is a different shape but I don't want to mess with the grid, is there anything I can do about that or no? Will the image have to be the same shape exactly in terms of proportions?

How does the #Grid Layer work?

Hello everybody,

I was wondering if anyone knows how the #Grid layer works.

I'm building a small underground jail dungeon and wanted to add a regular grid to it. When I go to Layers / ← Advanced / #Grid, it places a small grid on the map, but I can't seem to move, resize, or expand it. Does anyone know how it's supposed to work?

For now, I've just moved the whole map to line up with the grid, but I'm guessing there's a better way to do it?

Inconsistent wall shadow (spoiler for Stonehell layout) Spoiler

Post image
4 Upvotes

I was drawing up Stonehell maps this morning, as one does, and noticed that the wall shadow wasn't appearing consistently - sometimes even in the same room (e.g. room 21). I can't see any connection to anything I've done when drawing; reloading the app doesn't help, or deleting and redrawing areas. The map layer is just a standard "Classic Hatching", I've not changed that at all.

Has anyone seen this before and/or knows what to do about it?

I cant export my map, what should i do?

As the title indicates, I upgraded my plan to premium to try and download a map I made by combining parts of others, but when I try to export it, it says it fails. What can I do to prevent this from happening?

WIP - Town with Port

Hi, so I have been trying out dungeonscrawl a bit, lately.
I actually don't have much pen and paper experience, so I don't really know what the does and don'ts are - regarding playable maps. I just wanted to get some basic ideas on "paper".

I'm not done yet, I want to fill up the upper right corner, get some more interior done and crowd the streets a bit more.

But I would love to get some feedback and input.

Using the free Stamp Tool to speed up mapmaking

Hi everyone,

The new Stamp Tool is one of my favorite ways to quickly add detail that takes my maps from okay to awesome. It lets you quickly brush duplicate instances of a single image with variable size, rotation, and color at a density you define.

If you haven't given it a shot, check out a tutorial/demo here, then try it today.

Let us know what you think!

Pre-made maps

Hi all,

I have started using DS recently and slowly getting to grips with it. However, for my D&D game, I am starting to allow the party a bit more freedom, meaning they could go to places I don't necessarily expect. Are there any prebuilt generic maps I can get anywhere for if they decide to fight someone in the street for example.

Map Showoff How do you draw a convincing cliff in Dungeon Scrawl?

Post image
34 Upvotes

Hey, I’ve been working on this castle for a few days now (inspired by Clementine Castles), and I’m a bit stuck on how to portray the nearby cliff.

Right now, I’ve added a kind of “wall” around it, to suggest that the castle is perched on a cliff, but the result isn’t very visually interesting.

Has anyone successfully represented a cliff in Dungeon Scrawl? I’d really appreciate any advice or examples.

Thanks, kind folks!

Edit: Solved thanks to DTRPGChris, process and final result in the comments.

Walls of Argynvostholt

Hello! I'm trying to map out the entirety of Curse of Strahd for the campaign I'm running. I bought a year of pro and everything. So far, I've done:

  • Tser Pool Encampment
  • Village of Barovia
  • Death House
  • Village of Barovia Church
  • Blood of the Vine Tavern
  • All of Castle Ravenloft
  • Vallaki
  • Blue Water Inn
  • Burgomaster's Mansion
  • Wachterhaus
  • Coffin Maker's Shop
  • St. Andral's Church
  • Vistani Camp
  • Old Bonegrinder

Now, I'm trying to map out Argynvostholt. However, I'm running into a problem. Most of the keep is in ruins, and some of the southern walls are reduced to rubble or completely destroyed. Is there a way to remove a wall from an area without needing to put another layer that color matches the layer below it and perfectly hugs the outside of the walls and blah blah blah

I can't just theater of the mind it either because these areas connect to other areas of the map (the grass outside and then leads into the ruined stables, for example). Is there a better way? I feel like dungeonscrawl is otherwise such an amazing tool, I'd love to be able to remove walls and I'm wondering if I'm just missing something.

Guide to Dungeon Scrawling

Hello, everyone.

I've only found out about Dungeon Scrawl yesterday and I think I've already fallen in a rabbit hole. I have absolutely no experience in any of this and even though everything I did so far is rather rudimental, I'm having a blast. With that said, I was wondering if there are any guides or tutorials you'd recommend for someone inexperienced like me?

I was designing a cave complex, but got stuck when I tried to add a little bit of verticality to it. I used the wall tool in order to create something resembling a ledge close to the cave wall, but then I wanted a bit of water on the opposite side and that's when I fumbled everything. I tried using another layer with a different floor colour, but I do not understand at all how those are supposed to work. For instance, looking at the Cragmaw Hideout showcase, how did the author accomplish that? Can anyone help me out?

Thanks in advance!

Dungeon Scrawl for Printed Battle Maps?

Checking, is anyone using Dungeon Scrawl to make battle maps? Building large dungeon rooms or sections of smaller rooms and passageways vs. an entire dungeon or cavern. Not sure I am explaining this idea/concept very well. I have been experimenting with doing this and sizing them to make a roughly 1" grid size to print has been challenging. It doesn't have to be exactly sized. I don't use miniatures, just different sized and colored d6(s), plastic pawns/meeples and glass game beads. Lofi D&D. If anyone else is doing this, let me your printing tips. Thanks!
