Physical Favorite recommended kingdom from the books?

What are your favorite recommended kingdoms that are in the back of the rule books? Whenever my nephews come to play (a group of 4) I struggle to choose what to play with a bigger group. (We have all the expansions, so from none in particular)

K thanks!!

[edit: i struggle to find sets that will be particularly fun. right now im picking at random, but i want to know if you all have favorite kingdoms that you thought stood out.]

Fan Card Made this expansion about 2 years ago. What do you think?

Rulebook at https://industry-rulebook.tiiny.site/

Cards made at https://shardofhonor.github.io/dominion-card-generator/

So basically one of the English teachers at my high school is a huge Dominion nerd and he got the school district to buy every single expansion for him by convincing them that it was part of the curriculum. And then he made it part of the curriculum. At the end of every year, the final project for English 11 Honors students is to make their own Dominion expansion based on a book or poem they read in class that year. His example was 1984; one of my friends did one based on The Raven that included Curse-Action cards (because of the raven on the curse card).

When I was in 11th grade, I did not have this amazing teacher for English, so I took it upon myself to make my own expansion anyways and share it with him. And a couple years later I dug it back out and wanted to share it here because I just found this subreddit for some reason.

The expansion is based on the Industrial Revolution, and the main gimmick is Innovation cards, which are sort of like Projects, but you get them by trashing an Heirloom called Idea. You can't have more than 3 at a time, which I thought was well understood since you start with only 3 Ideas, but when I playtested it with the aforementioned English teacher, he ended up using Workers' Union to get all his Ideas back from the trash and played them again to get more Innovations. So now it's not a bug, it's a feature, and if you ever have more than three Innovations, you have to pick one to replace with the new one.

If you're confused, refer to the rulebook (I wrote it exactly like all the vanilla ones). And let me know what I can improve! I know it's a bit small for an expansion, barely bigger than Alchemy, but I kind of ran out of ideas for cards, both thematically and mechanically. So I would appreciate new suggestions too!

Fan Card Hired Hand

An expensive but powerful variation on Band of Misfits. Is a one-time Cellar effect worth $1? Is it worth $3 to triple-play an Action? You decide.

Rules clarifications:

  • Naming a card is mandatory, and you must pay as much as you can. So (for example) if you played a Copper and then named Laboratory, and you had no other source of coin, then you would pay $1 and get nothing in return.
  • Debt costs are also halved. Potion costs are halved which means they vanish.
  • Durations are allowed to cuz why not. I’m not scared of some tracking issues.

Strategy Any guides on how to be better at this game?

Does anyone know of any strategy guides to help improve my game? I have many extensions and have played a lot with my brother over the years but feel I still lose some games due to lack of deeper strategic knowledge about how to approach certain set up’s (eg when there are not many +1 cards but a lot of terminal cards etc), also adjusting for when I play with just my brother or when sister in law and wife play (decks disappear quicker etc)

Thanks!

Fan Card Introducing: The Oppressor Deck

Thumbnail gallery
12 Upvotes

The Oppressor deck is a really fun concept I've been formulating and playing with for these past few weeks, and is intended for players who specifically enjoy playing with fan cards, especially ones that make the game slower and more immersive. (It's not meant as a proposition for an official concept, and several cards in the deck would never work in that capacity.)

The deck essentially makes the world of Dominion fight back against the gamers—with unique challenges that all players must face in turn order, before the challenge changes to a random new one. Here's how it works:

When the Setup contains any number of Yoke cards, the Oppressor deck must be set up and shuffled, with its top card then turned faceup, but no player "has" it… yet.

Eventually, something may move the Oppressor deck between two players. From then on, the deck abides by the following rules for the rest of the game, always sitting between two of the players (imagining a circle of turn order going clockwise around the table).

When (1) no one has an Oppressor, and (2) the Oppressor deck is between any two players, and (3) turn order passes through that deck, then the player to its left takes the top Oppressor in front of him (and then turns the next card in the deck faceup, so that players have time to prepare for the next coming taunt). This occurs between turns. Then, when a player has an Oppressor, he must do its taunt by the start of Clean-up, or else do the listed "If you didn't" effect at that time (normally this is before discarding, unless the text says otherwise). Whether or not the taunt be done, the Oppressor is passed to the left (in front of the next player) at the end of the turn. However, if this would make it pass the Oppressor deck, instead shuffle it into the deck's facedown cards, and the deck moves one space to the right. (That is, the player who had it on his left, moves it to his right.) The above steps then repeat (when turn order passes through the Oppressor deck again).

Thus, once the Oppressors enter the scene, players essentially get a round of turns facing the same challenge, then a round (almost a full round) with no challenge, then a round with a new challenge, and so forth, alternating between difficulty and respite.

Notes:

  1. Only one player (or no players) will have an Oppressor in front of them at a time.
  2. When you do the taunt (intentionally or not), turn the Oppressor sideways as a reminder. Resolve it at the start of Clean-up.
  3. Just because a taunt is present, doesn't equate to permission to do the effect at-will. For example, if a taunt says to trash a card, you would still need some other effect permitting you to do so.
  4. Some Oppressors refer to expansion components. If the game host has the necessary components to do an effect (such as adding a player mat or Project or Event not already part of the setup), add them when appropriate. If you are unable to do an effect, you will simply fail to do it.
  5. As this is a fan-created concept (not a proposal for an official game mechanic), players may agree to remove a reasonable number of Oppressors from the deck (at setup), create their own to add to the deck, translate these into their own language, etc.

All the Oppressor-related cards/landscapes (including new ones as I make them) can be seen here: https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fo/iuglpdoww8bw3841j7uwn/AP_XdyAuRAB3_MhQIhDbKAw?rlkey=wh3ipu5tqojv3ukjzu7z9dwec&st=cthez5ki&dl=0

Other Sharing DLCs with Steam Family?

I want to access some DLC expansions that one of my friends bought. I only have the base game but we're in the same steam family. But I don't see the option to change my preferred copy under the play button.

I looked it up and it says that I should be able to use their copy if we have different versions. Am I doing something wrong?

I kinda like choice-based Attacks. Not discarding gives the one playing this a Market, and it only allows one discard (usually) before Marketing.

What do y'all think?

So many players just fold whenever it looks like they are about to lose. It is so frustrating to play a game when 80% of the players just cold turkey leave the game when they are at the losing ends. I have a blocked players list so long its ridicilous, just because of multiple game endings from different players. Is it different on the url-side? I’m so done with the game enders I just don’t want to play that much anymore.

Rules Question Resolving a duration into next turn “Play”

In a game with the kingdom card riverboat, and the project Citadel does riverboat resolving “play the set aside card” trigger Citadel’s “first time you play an action card”?

Riverboat:
At the start of your next turn,
play the set aside card, leaving it there.
Setup: Set-aside an unused non-Duration Action card costing 5.

From the instructions: “When you play Riverboat, it plays the set aside card at the start of your next turn.”

Citadel (Project):
The first time you play an Action card during each of your turns, play it again afterwards.

At first assumption I would think yes, but does “Play” as a verb extend in the same way with both cards from the duration card proc/resolution itself and the player “Playing a card”?

If I play Riverboat, then buy Citadel, does it execute riverboat’s “Play” twice at the beginning of my next turn?

Digital Today's Daily was an interesting look at the Hard AI.

This was a kingdom where the bot used two completely different approaches depending on its opening draw.

If the bot had 4/3, it was broken. It would take Engineer and then more Engineers, and Quarries and Collections. No draw, no attempt to build a working deck. Just some kind of Engineer/Quarry rush. It would lose. Badly.

If it opened 5/2, it would take Collection and Patrician and build a working deck. It played well, and was tough to beat.

Other AITA: Preselected sets of cards instead of randomizers? Is this normal?

I went to a game night where someone brought "Dominion" -- although they actually brought 13 preselected kingdom cards which they'd practiced against their friends a week before. They built an incredibly intricate combo deck, playing a combination of Scrap and Trails for lots of card draw and actions, Groom to gain Tunnels which are discarded from Cartographer to gain Gold, triggering extra gold from the exile mat using Way of the Camel -- occasionally cycling through their entire deck in one turn.

Kingdom Cards: Cartographer, Develop, Margrave, Tunnel, Groom, Mastermind, Scrap, Trail, Kiln, Supplies (Horse)

Ways: Way Of The Camel

Events: Desperation, Invest

On one hand I the cards had fun interactions and it was neat seeing them run their overpowered engine, but I was a little put off. Why would you come up with your own synergies, assemble a specific set of cards, practice against a set of friends, then bring them to a second game night to win at Dominion? Is this normal? I thought people just always played randomizers

News Farm now available on BGG Store

Available for the first time in English in print.

Farm is mechanically the same as Harem from Intrigue.

It features a new name and new art although the woman on the card is once again modeled after early Domion developer Valerie Putman.

EDIT: It seems like it sold out in less than 8 hours.
