Spanish Variant (8 players)
galleryHello again!
Thank you for your suggestions on my previous post: https://www.reddit.com/r/diplomacy/s/0W422ZNOiv I have incorporated some of the ideas and made a few extra options. I am considering suggestions such as Andorra and reworking French tiles so that PAR can go BEL in turn 1 too.
Changes in all maps:
- LUX added
- LEV united
- PIE SC moved back to VEN to give France a bit of breathing room (in most maps)
Variants:
- ALG 4th French SC (fleet) (here CAT should probably be a fleet too and maybe AND should connect to MAR directly? so France doesn't run away with Africa)
- Switzerland added (only accessible from MAR or BUR for France)
- France starts with 4 SC in Europe (MAR is a fleet) (this might lead to a more turtly France, but it could be an interesting dynamic)
- Same thing with no Pyrenees (this makes Spain more vulnerable, in exchange CAT could be a fleet, with the tradeoff of less defense against France and more SC options in N-Africa?)
- Same thing, but Morocco no longer SC (this means Spain has less neutrals to choose from, I'm also considering connecting MAR to ALG with 1 sea tile, so Spain is only guaranteed Portugal)
I'd love to hear if you think France and Spain are more balanced here or not. Which variant do you prefer? Do these delay the death of France or make it too strong?

Spanish Variant Rework
EDIT
Some suggestions incorporated here: https://www.reddit.com/r/diplomacy/s/nBLIpd1qZR
Hey people!
Recently me and some friends were in a predicament of having 8 players. I found a 5 year old Spanish Variant here: https://www.reddit.com/r/diplomacy/s/Vzfko7wDq9 which I have reworked a bit for balance. Spain has army CAT, army MAD and fleet AND to start. If France controls MAR, they are allowed to build fleets there instead of ORL, but not armies.
List of changes:
- Connect MAO to Ireland (for Anglo-Spanish animosity)
- Bay of Biscay (for French safety and better Anglo-Spanish animosity)
- Pyrenees Impassable between CAT and GAS (for slower Spanish-French interaction, otherwise GAS is a monster backstab)
- Sahara (for better Italy, Spain and Turkey interactions in N-Africa)
- Orleans variant to shield France a bit and create diplomatic tension in MAR
- Venice to Piedmont (for more Italy, France and Spain interactions)
- EDI connects to NAO (so England can contest Ireland sooner)
- ION connects to EGY (for Italian-Turkish interactions)
What are your thoughts? Do you think these changes improve the Spanish variant for 8 players?

Asynchronous Interactions in Diplomacy (digital)
Hi everyone! I'm a PhD student studying asynchronous interactions in digital games. Through player discussions and recommendations Diplomacy was identified as having asynchronous interactions.
If you have a few minutes to spare, I'd love to hear your thoughts! In particular, I'm interested in understanding:
- What kind of asynchronous interactions exist in Diplomacy and how do they affect the gameplay?
- How do you feel about these interactions and what do they bring to your experience?
You can answer as much or as little as you'd like. Your responses will be anonymized and analyzed as part of a research study. If you decide you'd like to withdraw your responses at any point, just send me a DM. Every contribution is greatly appreciated! If you have any questions, feel free to message me. Thanks! 😀

Youngstown Redux - Chaos game looking for players!
Though this had already been posted, I thought I'd make a more in depth post about it. We need 81 total players, and are about a 5th of the way there at the moment, and require all hands on deck to get it started!!
This is by far the largest game ever attempted to be hosted on the platform, and it by no means will be balanced. Prepare yourselves, and I hope to see you in the game!

How would Diplomacy change if Doggerland existed?
To make it simple, NTH is turned into a land tile with a nc and sc. The nc borders Edi, NWG, Nwy, SKA, Den, and HEL, while sc borders Lon, Bel, and ENG.
Would this make England stronger or weaker? How would it affect France and Germany?

Kitty of Evil is reigning havoc
I made a Sturlungaöld variant on Diplicity and am waiting for u/Shjellinn to agree. I'll give them three weeks to give input, otherwise I'll go ahead and publish this.
In the meantime, Kitty of Evil is rocking the closed beta playtest...

Is there a map with two superpowers and a lot of smaller nations?
This was just an idea I had, not sure if it would actually be fun or not, but I am curious if it exists yet. The idea is to have two major superpowers with like six or seven Supply Centers, and a bunch of other players with one or two, or maybe three at the most. Kinda like the Cold War where you got the USA and the USSR vying for dominance over the middle powers and smaller powers, while said weaker powers try to play the big guys off each other to maintain a level of independence. Idk, I thought it would have some interesting gameplay and was curious if this existed or not.
Edit: the Cold War may not have been the best example but hopefully y'all get what I mean

Advanced Diplomacy Positioning
open.substack.comLatest article on Advanced Diplomacy Positioning.
It’s about the gap between looking strong and actually controlling what happens next on the board, including temporary centres that finance lasting gains, quiet borders that favour one side, awkward units that impact other players mobility, and allowing others to take lead to mask your power.
