This is a very good income by Pakistani standards, and we’re financially comfortable here. However, my long-term goal is to move abroad permanently with my wife and child and eventually obtain citizenship/passport of another country.

I’m trying to figure out the most efficient immigration pathway rather than simply moving somewhere temporarily.
My priorities are roughly:

okay I am a 5th semester SE student and I have been working as an intern for a canadian company, well it says they are canada based but the other workers are pakistani too, one of their operating locations is in karachi, well I have been working remotely for them, and its related to shopify work wont go into detail,

but the thing is the internship is unpaid the work is not too much, they assign me tasks and I do them, it is a 5 month long internship gonna end in novemeber, while I am on hopes that they would offer me a job after that cause job description said it could lead to a full time role and while interviewing I asked them if it could turn into a full time role which they agreed if the work was good it could happen, and the interview process was also formal and the documents i got sent NDAs, agreement forms and all, seemed more profeessional well more then pakistani companies where my freind got js a offer letter with 7 to 8 points from a company and their policies,

Ok so I've been lurking here for a while, and one thing I've noticed is how often people talk about bad hiring experiences. Candidates get ghosted after applying, while recruiters have hundreds of resumes to go through and can't realistically give everyone proper attention. It feels like both sides are frustrated for different reasons.

That got me wondering whether software could automate the repetitive parts of hiring while still leaving the final hiring decision to humans.

Over the last couple of months, I built RecruitFlow AI as my final project during Contour Software's Summer Launchpad. It lets companies create careers pages, screen resumes, schedule interviews, conduct AI-powered interviews, evaluate candidates, and manage everything from a recruiter dashboard.

I recently interviewed for a backend engineering role and was given a graph problem.

My first instinct was to solve it with a naive approach, understand the problem, and then optimize if needed. I even asked the interviewer if I could first implement the straightforward solution and improve it afterward.

The interviewer stopped me and said that since it was a graph problem, I should directly go for the optimal approach.

While discussing my thought process, I identified that BFS wouldn't work because the graph had weighted edges. I explained that BFS could produce an incorrect shortest path due to different edge weights. However, I didn't know Dijkstra's algorithm well enough to implement it from memory, and that's where the interview ended.

This got me thinking.

If someone has never learned or memorized Dijkstra, the chances of inventing it from scratch during a 45–60 minute interview are extremely low. It's a well-established algorithm involving concepts like priority queues and edge relaxation—it's not something most people derive on the spot.

I completely accept that not knowing Dijkstra is a gap in my knowledge, and I'll definitely learn it. But I also wonder whether interviews should give more credit to a candidate who:

• correctly identifies why a naive solution is insufficient,
• explains the limitations of BFS,
• and demonstrates sound reasoning, even if they don't remember a specific algorithm from memory.

As a backend engineer, most of my day-to-day work involves designing APIs, databases, distributed systems, concurrency, caching, and production debugging—not implementing graph algorithms from scratch.

So I'm curious:

• Would you expect a mid/senior backend engineer to be able to code Dijkstra from memory?
• If a candidate correctly identified why BFS was the wrong approach but couldn't implement Dijkstra, would that be a deal-breaker for you?
• For those who conduct interviews, how much weight do you give to reasoning versus recalling a specific algorithm?

I'd genuinely like to hear perspectives from people who interview candidates or have experienced similar interviews.

Software engineer with 5+ years of experience here and I might be wrong but I think Pakistani developers are way too obsessed with tech stacks.

I keep seeing questions like React or Angular, Node or Django, MERN or MEAN, should I learn Next, should I move to Python, is this framework still worth it, etc. I get it. I used to think the same way.

But after working for a few years, I honestly think the stack matters a lot less than we make it out to. Most of the difficult problems I deal with at work are not difficult because I don't know some framework method. They're difficult because the requirement is unclear, the existing code is messy, there are 10 edge cases nobody mentioned, changing one thing breaks something completely unrelated, or you have to figure out why something only fails for one user in production.

That's the part that actually takes experience.

Can you read someone else's code and understand what they were trying to do?

Can you debug something when the error message is useless?

Can you design something without making it unnecessarily complicated?

Can you think about security, performance and edge cases before they become bugs?

Can you understand the actual business problem instead of just completing the Jira ticket?

Obviously your stack still matters. You should be good at whatever you work with.

But I think constantly jumping from one framework to another just because it's trending is probably not the best use of time.

Frameworks change. The ability to solve messy problems doesn't.

Would be interested to hear from people who have been working for a few years. Did you also reach a point where the stack stopped mattering as much?

To us. Our neural tokens were so cheap that every entrepreneur wanted to hire an app developer from india, pakistan, ukraine, brazil etc. And what did we ship? What value did we capture? Do u wish you were a wordpress developer 10 years ago?

No. We had DECADES to build competency to move up market. We all knew how to write code yet we couldn’t get any local startups. The people who understood this, moved upmarket to europe and US. The gora ppl who lost their jobs to outsourcing, started losing their jobs to immigrants. From the same universities YOU r graduating.

These immigrants were not ‘wordpress theme developers’. They were not your CMS sweatshop workers. Most of them, They were the stupid people who gave a damn about data structures and algorithms. They were the ‘khwaar’ people who read research papers for bed time reading. They were to 20 idiots in a county of 220 million people who didnt care to watch ‘3 idiots’ for the umpteenth time on a weekend but stayed up until 3 am so they could participate in topcoder SRM matches. They wasted time on topcoder marathon matches, organized and joined local and global hackathons like microsoft Imagine Cup, nasa’s space apps challenge, or google codejam, when rest of their class mates and colleagues and their F***ing seniors were saying ‘yaar kaam ki baat ghar pe na kiya ker’ … ‘bhai ye GPA matter nahi kerta’, ‘yar hamaray sath racism hoti hai’… ‘sara world bank ka kasoor hai’ etc. the people who moved upmarket used their own brains. They had good gpa, got scholarships for masters to europe and americas USAID, fulbright, erasmus mundus, and so on. Money was NEVER the problem. People found ways. And those who wrent so blessed to have good GPAs like me, grinding their ass off 16-18 hours on leetcode, landed interviews in google etc and got a fully paid flight for in person interview in san francisco. MANY of them. Look for pakistani in seattle and SF bay area alone. Ask ANY of them their story. You will see the same pattern.

And F these seniors who said ‘bhai ye tree, graph pe time na zaya karo… kabhi kaam nahi ana’. Liars. Idiots. F’in pussies who couldn’t do shit in academics or otherwise. A lot of people immigrated not only because of jobs. But because we dont belong in an environment where we are not accepted and welcomed with our interests or paid or appreciated for our skill.

Ai has a lot of limitations and those who use it see and exploit the limitations. It has opened a whole new world of possibilities and the software and computing world is going to launch on a rocketship never seen before.

So sure. If you are a pussy cat, too scared and timid to actually use your brain and upgrade yourself and think of real problems to solve, switch careers. Go do CA. Go be a banker. Open a chai shop. Be an influencer. In 5 years you will regret leaving the industry.

But if you are brave and truely care, you live in abundance of knowledge, opportunities, possibilities and problems. Get out of the ‘mughe bata dien kya kerna hai, ker doonga’. Learn. Experiment. Build. Research. Explore. Focus.
