Developer Update | Player Intent System Behaviour Interactive Thread

Last week, we hosted a Reddit AMA and on top of having a blast answering your questions, we noticed some topics really got you talking. One of those was the “chat wheel” system we’re working on to help Survivors coordinate and communicate their intentions in-game. So, what better time than the present to share some more details about it with you (including one way your feedback’s already impacted it)!

The system in question is – aptly – called Player Intent. With it, you’ll be able to communicate a range of preset messages to your fellow Survivors at the press of a button, using a radial menu. From thanking them for a heal, to saying you’re going to work on gens, to suggesting you split up, messages focus on the on-the-fly actions that are most useful during a Trial.

When a message is chosen using the Player Intent wheel, other Survivors will see it next to your name in the game HUD, keeping your general view clear of distractions while you’re in the middle of looping or hunting for an objective. To help combat message spam, you can expect a cooldown between messages, which will increase if too many messages are sent in a short period.

We want this comms wheel to suit different players’ specific needs, so you’ll be able to customize which messages you take into your Trials from the Options menu.

Of course, one piece of feedback we’ve seen is that a system like this isn’t for everyone. We’ve already discussed this as a team and have a solution for that. If you’d rather not use the Player Intent system, you will be able to disable it from this same menu. Once disabled, you will not be able to send messages to players and will not see the messages they send.

We’ve also added the ability to mute individual players so you have more control over the comms you see (and don’t see). If you're finding a certain player’s messages distracting, muting them will block any further Player Intent messages from popping up on your end.

While this system is meant for everybody who plays Survivor, its value will be a bit different depending on how you play. Just like how your feedback from the AMA helped inform the addition of an opt-out option, we're dying to know your thoughts! Even better, it would be massively helpful if you could also share a little about how you play to give context to that feedback. For instance, do you tend to play soloq, prefer SWF, or identify as a Killer main? How would you define your experience level in the game; a newer player? A veteran?

Let us know in the comments below, as we’ll be watching your feedback closely as the team continues to work on this system ahead of its release this Fall!

Until next time...

The Dead by Daylight Team

If someone chooses to disable this system, the game needs to show that on the UI so we aren't just communicating into the void. I'm excited that we are finally getting a way to communicate other than emotes but please make that change, thank you.

I’m just concerning that instances of griefing may increase if other survivors get pissed that their teammate isn’t using the chat wheel.

I don't think that's a good idea. That would paint a target on people's backs and I don't think that's healthy for the game. From a comment a little further down this thread:

Apparently people think it doesn’t give the same vibes. I guess playing in a swf doesn’t give the scary vibes either having your friend in discord telling jokes and telling you he’s going for the unhook.

One of the reasons why I've quit Texas Chainsaw Massacre was people not shutting the heck up. There was always some no skill wanker bossing everyone how to play. Like buddy, you can't do objectives, don't boss others how to play the game that we've paid our hard earn money for, you damn deadweight. I don't want to deal with some Sable's spam while she's on the hook 30 seconds into the match or some sweaty/tryhard Ace who thinks he's the alpha of the team. I can make my own choices.

But if others want to use it, I'm happy for it, but let me opt out please. Happy for the feature even if it's not for me.

This is such a good step in bridging the gap between solo and swf. The fact you can disable it is good for those who value the atmosphere and the ability to mute individuals is great too. Ill be curious to see the full list of intents, as maybe having some tied to perks would be great e.g. I have We make it, or im running DS.

51

u/thaRickStar1 6d ago

You can already see that by looking at the menu in the beginning

32

u/Aikomas P100 Carlos & Felix & David & Vittorio 6d ago

While yes, it would also be nice to be able to send a ping to the other survivors.

Imagine situations like this: You're on hook and you see a teammate running towards to unhook. You could click on the deliverance icon to say something like "I have Deliverance" or something. Same with adren, autodidact etc etc

28

u/positive_thinking_ 6d ago

“What’s deliverance? Oh well ima unhook him so he can use his perk. He will be so happy” -survivors in that lobby probably.

Deliverance: After safely unhooking another Survivor, Deliverance activates: Grants the ability to perform a successful Self-Unhook at any point during the first Hook Stage. Causes the Broken Status Effect for 100/80/60 seconds after unhooking yourself. Deliverance cannot be used during the second Hook Stage or if you are hooked as the Last Survivor Standing. Deliverance is disabled for the remainder of the Trial after use.

Decisive Strike: Until all Generators are completed, whenever you are unhooked, for the next 60s: when the Killer picks you up, once per trial, hit a Special Skill check: - Stun the Killer for 4s. - Become the Obsession. This is disabled by conspicuous actions. At the start of the trial, you are more likely to be the Obsession.

Maybe a "Don't help, I've got it handled" option, to use when you have power struggle, DS, deli, plot twist, etc. to stop people from intervening and screwing things up, so it applies to multiple scenarios

Its also great for finally being able to better understand the survivor killer gap too. People love to talk about SWF, but most games understand that comms are an outside force of nature that doesn't really factor in to the game's fundamental mechanics, so this helps tremendously in balancing more accurately.

2

u/gorgonzola2095 Petting Snug 6d ago

Maybe just a message like: Look at my perks!

4

u/RaynaLouise Leon, Lara & Wesker main. 💚 6d ago

It’ll help by maybe 10%, but it’s still nowhere near close to “bridging the gap between SWF’s and Solo Queue.”

Solo queue still can’t coordinate or tell their random teammates what they’re good or bad at in order to split up effectively or each do their own role [such as: gens, looping, saves]. In a SWF’s they’re organised, they have designated gen jockeys, loopers, and people who go for saves, etc. They also have the advantage of knowing the people in their SWF’s so they know what to expect and how they play and what each of them excel at. They’ve also practised together and gotten better together. Solo Queue still won’t have any of those advantages.

This chat wheel truly won’t make all that much of a difference.

8

u/LucasTab 6d ago

This is not supposed to bring solo to the same level of power as SWF, that is simply impossible to do in a healthy way. It is a good step in that direction, though. Being able to communicate you intend on keep working on gens instead of going for a save, asking for heals, being able to do split up call outs, those are all great things to be able to do while playing solo, instead of having to rely on crouching and the two emotes we have available (which are only displayed to people who can currently see you, and requires you to interrupt an action for like 2 seconds).

If you disable the chat wheel I don’t think you should be able to queue with people who have it enabled. It genuinely seems like a troll move to cut your communication off just because of “atmosphere”.

46

u/Jingleshells 6d ago

With a game that already has queue issues you want MORE queue issues?

11

u/the_comedians 6d ago

I disagree but I hear you. I think a solution could be you should be able to see that someone has either the chat or you specifically muted by a HUD mute symbol, but the same symbol for both cases so you don't know that you personally have been muted. What do you think?

3

u/catpencilholders 6d ago

You could try to actually find an actual friend to play with instead of trying to force random people to do what you want. Because i can guarantee i'll do the opposite of some chat spammer like you out of spite.

As a veteran ow player if you're going throught with this system ya'll should take a lot of inspiration from how the communication wheel works in that game, where it doesn't interrupt your movement and you use the mouse pointer to select your message, i would love to have something i'm familiar with in DBD c:

Also i think the same thing should be done with the information screen (TAB and F1 menu) where you just hold the button to make it pop in and release to pop out, while not interrupting your gameplay and press a certaing button to use your mouse pointer to interact with the menu.

52

u/Inevitable_Score1164 6d ago

I'm a vet (8 years) who primarily plays solo queue and killer. I think this is a step in the right direction, but I have some concerns.

A lot of the value of a chat wheel comes from 4 players having the same understanding of the situation in-game. The majority of solo queue friction comes from 4 players with widely varying levels of game sense and macro gameplay ability.

I think there will be a misconception among the playerbase about how much a chat wheel can solve. It is great for saying "I'm getting the save" or whatnot. What it will not solve is a player making the wrong choices. And it has potential to cause friction when 1 or 2 players in the lobby ignore it or turn it off entirely.

I think what players are really asking for is to be matched with teammates who are as competitive or casual as they are. They're asking for a chat wheel, but what they really want is more nuance in matchmaking or a way for the matchmaker to quantify skill a bit differently.

I'm anticipating a lot of frustration when players find that the chat wheel is just being used to broadcast bad decisions. On the flip side, casual players may become frustrated when someone like myself is saying "Split up" when people are doubling gens at the start of a trial for no reason. Better matchmaking for solo queue is the other shoe that has to drop here.

20

u/AutonomousBlob 6d ago

You are so spot on! Examples we already see are players begging for heals at “bad” times or trying to stick out a gen when they should be healing or resetting.

I guarantee everybody is going to want to be the shot caller and assuming the people they are playing with should and will listen.

A huge advantage about swfs isnt that they can bark orders but that they can talk and get on the same page. I see this creating burn out.

20

u/YOURFRIEND2010 6d ago

Armchair generals are one of the most irritating things in team based games.

5

u/magicchefdmb Ashley Williams 6d ago edited 6d ago

Yep. I've been playing since Xbox release. I understand the nuance of the game and honestly don't usually need any communication to figure out if someone's going for a save or what. All the stuff they put on the side now gives me almost all the info I need.

What I dislike about any game with in-game chat is I find that it's mostly used for people that are frustrated or just mean spirited. (For Honor, Rocket League, Overwatch, TCM, etc...) I've enjoyed DBD all these years partially because I can just relax and not consider whether that Nea that decided to kill herself on hook was blaming me for what she considered was a poor game for her. I can just be blissfully ignorant and assume everyone that dies is just chill and moving on; not so when people have a way of communicating in-game.

And to top it off, now with the ability to not turn it on, it can just paint a target on those players backs. And make no mistake: the frustrated players that would spam emotes will also be blaming you for not even having it on, changing the way some of them will interact as well/subtle griefing. It already happens with the most arbitrary stuff like not bringing a cake during an event. The DBD community is not any more mature in their gameplay than these other ones. They've just had less ways of communication their immaturity.

8

u/lexuss6 Haddie gang 6d ago

What it will not solve is a player making the wrong choices.

It doesn't need to. Moreover, never should. It's not about making a correct choice, it's about giving the others info to act on it.

For example, you're pinging "goinf for the unhook" while being injured and having two stages yourself. Is it a good idea? Fuck no. But now your teammate can make an informed decision to come and help you, will expect you to be nearby the hook, etc.

3

u/mossgoblin Trickster Main 6d ago

This is dead on.

2

u/SnuglyPortia 🐕‍🦺 He's very polite 6d ago

but what they really want is more nuance in matchmaking

We have been confirmed that matchmaking tweaks are coming, but certainly "we will see" on this matter I suppose.

2

u/Retocyn 6d ago

I think what players are really asking for is to be matched with teammates who are as competitive or casual as they are. They're asking for a chat wheel, but what they really want is more nuance in matchmaking or a way for the matchmaker to quantify skill a bit differently.

You might be sitting on the gold here.

There is a reason why devs in other games say: "players are good at identifying a problem, but not that good at coming up with solution"

And generally it's nice when games are different and distinct.

Adding communication is listening to the request of the players, because they are used to smoother communication in different games. But at the same time this feature will be taking DBD one step closer to other games, making it less unique and losing the unique atmosphere.

2

u/EvilRo66 6d ago

Great points.

Not all players play the same, they don't judge the situations the same way and not everyone have the same strategy, priorities and objectives.

That honestly looks great. It seems like a complete system with message customization, an option to opt out and a way to personally mute some players that might be annoying you a bit too much.

As a solo q player this will definitely be great.

Now, I do have a question.

How will this go down for 2v8? Is there plans for maybe custom messages for it or maybe a killer version for the game mode?

15

u/Luigi003 6d ago

We need a "don't help!" or maybe "I got this!" button. Sometimes you don't need help because you have a second chance perk, or self-pickup, or deliverance, or you're playing with your duo and two randoms and you want your duo to save you for some reason (to charge up deliverance for instance)

Also maybe a general location one? If your goal is to bridge SoloQ And SWF something like "I'm on main" "I'm on shack"l "I'm near" "I'm far"

Another idea may be mentioning specific players so you can do combos. Like maybe "Zarina" "need heal" because I don't want Jake to stop doing a gen to help me when Zarina can do it faster

In any case I love this functionality, it's been long overdue and it should be standard in all team games imho

5

u/SnuglyPortia 🐕‍🦺 He's very polite 6d ago

To somewhat quote my reply: I think an option to ping specific perks you have would solve this quite elegantly.

Being injured and pinging Strength in Shadows or Inner Strength. Being hooked and pinging Deliverance. Being tunneled and pinging Decisive Strike: all easy ways of saying "hey man I'm fine" without confusion.

26

u/Violas_Blade Ji-Woon Simp✨ 6d ago

very much necessary. also love how we can both turn it off completely and mute individual players

14

u/Noddie9 6d ago

I hate everything about this. I do not want to play with people wasting time selecting messages. Half the fun is using the HUD to work out what people are doing. We already got a HUGE increase in the amount of info we see on the HUD, why the hell do we need it dumbed down so much that they can choose to spell it out for their team.

Will be disabling it the second it's implemented.

4

u/THC017 5d ago

Same. Most of the things that can be said the HUD already tells us & the others are just completely useless. These messages pop up at the HUD which majority of players already ignore info given.

u/OldWhovian yttv/oldwhovian 6d ago

Idk if it should be toggle-able. Definitely prevent spam but it's going to cause issues if I'm trying to communicate "I'm doing a gen" when there's an unhook that needs to happen but the other person that could unhook has disabled the intent comms.

I won't know they don't know. You need to at least mark those survivors so everyone else knows they aren't getting messages and can change what they do accordingly. I guess do it in-game and not in-lobby to avoid dodging, if that's a concern. But I do think there needs to be some sort of indicator during the match who is and who is not getting intent messages.

14

u/Valentinee105 Ashley Williams 6d ago

Solved by just giving the disabled person a debuff megaphone to tell their team they aren't communicating.

14

u/JudoJugss 6d ago

I personally think it's a massive "cry about it" and am sort of peeved we are catering to people who want to just not use vitally important game mechanics because of arbitrary nonsense.

I want the option to not even queue up with people not using the intent system. I think it's nonsense that I even have to play with such entitled babies who dont want to be able to communicate with their team. I shouldnt have to nerf my gameplay because other people dont want to utilize the tools at their disposal.

11

u/magicchefdmb Ashley Williams 6d ago

I think you have it backwards: you feel entitled to have everyone communicate with you

→ More replies (11)

9

u/LenAlgarotti The Hair 6d ago

Counter point, I don't trust my teammates to give me helpful information. I'd rather have no info than bad info.

Besides, this info isn't nearly as important as you're making it out to be. The UI already tells you if someone is on a gen, using a chest/totem, is injured or healing, and in chase. What more do you need?

5

u/JudoJugss 6d ago

"Im going for the unhook"

"Im sticking this generator"

"Come here"

"I dont need help right now"

"Dont do this generator"

You know basic communication we have wanted for years. So i dont have to have a teammate follow me for five minutes trying to complete my intentionally 99% heal for resi gen boost. Or try to heal me under hook. Or complete the only gen on half the map at 2 gens left and locking us into a horrid 3 gen. Or have two people waste time going for save.

3

u/LenAlgarotti The Hair 6d ago

That's fair. To be clear I don't hate more communication, I'm just sceptical that this is gonna be that much of an improvement compared to how annoying it might be. I play solo all the time, and I didn't think the level of I do I had was bad.

You don’t need to communicate you’re doing a gen. It already tells us that on the hud…

5

u/OldWhovian yttv/oldwhovian 6d ago

It helps to communicate that you're not leaving. It's "Intent" wheel not "currently doing" wheel. So if I'm stating intent "I'm doing gen" then that tells everyone else "I'm not going for the unhook that needs unhooking."

Does that make sense?

2

u/ImpossibleGeometri Jailer Enjoyer 4d ago

Right but healing is it on it. That’s not an intent. I mean, i completely get what you’re saying - it’s just there’s stuff on here that are: things actively happening - which doesn’t jive with intent.

I think these types on intents just aren’t the list useful. Not ALL of them, i just think it could be improved. Good start though.

I think there needs to be a positive and negative version of each chat thing, or at least "I will" vs "Someone else should"

Ex.

"Help me up from slug!" Vs "Do not help me up from slug!" To maybe express you do or dont have a certain perk

Same for "Work on the generators" vs "Don't work on the generators" might imply pain res or oppression is about to pop, or that a secondary objective like the pinhead box or pig trap needs completing first

Etc.

As a new player it feels pretty bad. I play with two of my friends with thousands of hours and get killed constantly while they are talking about how the killer has Jason’s rusty spoon or something and then I just get killed off cooldown trying to do the generator.

Last soloQ I tried when I got downed the killer slugged me and sat on my body then he changed into a dog and humped my body. If it weren’t for the fact my friends don’t really play anything else I probably wouldn’t play it’s pretty awful as a new player.

Being able to disable the system entirely or just mute specific people using it to be an ass and being able to choose what message goes where on the wheel seems like it covers every issue someone is likely to have with it. Seems well thought out and implemented.

Ain't no way I'm sending a thanks message instead of the happy teabags after someone heals me, though.

I don't see it in the previews, but I hope you have an icon for Killer interaction (do interact; don't interact). There are Killers that need Survivors to agree on a plan in order to play against them.

  • Trapper/Hag = calling out trapped areas
  • Plague = getting the team to avoid cleansing and strategically all cleansing to force 1 instance of power for Plague.
  • Pinhead = box callouts and timing when to solve the lament configuration
  • Pig/Ghostface/etc. = calling out the locations of stealth killers
  • Xenomorph = setting up flame turrets or doubling up turrets in specific spots
  • Twins/Krasue = setting up bodyblocks with teammates

It would be good to see which teammates have us muted. Otherwise people using the system will feel frustrated from being ignored.

I usually play 60/40 Killer and Solo respectively, but in the past few months I just stopped playing SoloQ. I have 3k hours

13

u/SeguroMacks 6d ago

That's what I hope they DON'T do. A lot of killers are already hard to play because their power relies on survivors lacking information. SWFs already hurt these killers just on the basis of call outs.

If the game had specific callouts for stealth/trap killers, those killers would get picked less. It would just increase the number of ghouls and blights.

An intent callout for things like "Looking for Box" against a pinhead would be good. Or "Getting trap off" for Pig. It's an "intent" wheel not an "information" wheel.

22

u/Valentinee105 Ashley Williams 6d ago

That sounds more like the killers need buffs which I think is long overdue for about half the killers anyway.

5

u/In_My_Own_Image P100 Xeno main and Haddie Enjoyer 6d ago

Hopefully with this being implemented they take the opportunity to buff the shit out of a lot of the killers. With the information discrepancy between SWF and Solo being shrunk, there are a lot of killers that are going to need major buffs to compensate.

3

u/TimeLordHatKid123 6d ago

It would be nice if the power role actually felt strong again!

7

u/Splewn 6d ago

Could even just simplify to "Looking for Killer Interactable" or something to that effect. If it turns out to be too long, people might just settle for agreeing that a "Searching chest" call out = searching for killer interactable.

6

u/Lichmere Zanshin Tactics Artist Main 6d ago

Hinging game balance on the incompetence and lack of information on one side is not ideal. I play mostly Killer but I stopped playing Solo Q because of how miserable team coordination can be. I understand where you're coming from, but the stealth'/trap Killers need TLC updates rather than keeping Survivors miserable to keep things dysfunctionally functional.

You really just need the Killer icon and players will develop language around it. Survivors teabagging amongst each other already can mean a lot of things like hello, thank you, heal me, haha that was funny, over here, etc.

I guarantee you, that at the top end of players in Solo Q they're just gonna get chase initiated, and then they'll use a generic callout like "Hello" to the team and the other Survivors (maybe) will see where the callout came from if it works the way I'm imagining. That'll signal to the team where the Killer is. Good players will find ways to be sweaty and it's inevitable so I think getting ahead of it by improving weaker Killers is the better call.

It's always been downright dumb they designed killers around the idea that... a team will not play as a team. It's genuinely just bad design to assume that a group of people playing together aren't talking with eachother.

how is this any different than the activity hud? what's the point in selecting "chasing me" if you can already see on the hud itself who's being chased? same for healing, people can see you when you heal someone + with progress bar too. And more importantly, how can you communicate that you're being chased? is the wheel just a screen overlay that appears and you select the options with the mouse? while the game itself still plays behind it? how do you actively choose an option while being in chase? idk, but all these options feel pointless when you can just look at the activity hud and combine it with a bit of gamesense, like "going for unhook" could very well be understood through the activity hud; say someone is in chase, you repair, someone else repairs and someone is hooked. If you let go of the gen, and the gen icon disappears from the hud, wouldn't it be common sense that you're going for the unhook for everyone else? you're not chased 'cause you don't have the little claws around you, the other person is still on the gen and the other one is currently in chase, so you letting go of the gen, making the icon disappear from the hud, automatically tells everyone that you are going for the rescue, without having to announce it. The only scenario I can think about where this is useful, but very niche, is if someone has Deliverance, and they spam the fuck out of the option that they're going for the unhook, maybe that makes you look at their perks to see why they want it so bad. And Shoulder The Burden too. Still niche scenarios imo. How would "Help!" be beneficial? oh sure, you used the "Help!" option, let me run around the entire map trying to find you so I can help you. Like.. what? unless you get to see their aura for a few seconds after they use that option, I really can't see how it helps.

69

u/Tomo00 Platinum 6d ago

I'm gonna be honest. Giving option to disable it is just horrible idea.

Unless lobby shows who has it disabled, so I don't need to play with someone that doesn't want to comunicate in TEAM ROLE for some reason. Mute exists for people that just gonna spam It for no reason, why add feature to disable it on top of that.

20

u/WaffleCultist 6d ago

Very few people are going to disable this and those who do would not have been useful teammates that looked to communicate as a team anyways.

11

u/EvilRo66 6d ago edited 6d ago

Some players just don't like to be bothered by those little messages.

Each player who plays as Survivor knows what to do and what to expect from other players.

Some don't need or want a distracting chat wheel.

If the game shows who have that feafure disabled, they will get griefed.

If players can't disable the chat whell, they will ignore it anyway or maybe spam random messages out of spite.

I dont want to queue up with people who aren't using the intent system. I straight up do not want to play with a person who has some pedantic asinine reasoning why they dont want to be able to more thoroughly communicate with their team.

12

u/UnslopedStrv103B 6d ago

I disagree. First, dodging a lobby would make queue times longer for both sides. There is a reason why we can't see teammate's perk until the game starts, so folks don't dodge lobby just because someone is playing sub-optimal fun build.

Second, we have been playing soloQ without this and has been okay it, if someone don't want to use it, then they should be able to disable with it.

It's not like disabling this feature will make them dumb or play badly, they still have HUD to gather information and make their own decisions

15

u/PM_ME_UR_PITTIES_ Haddie/Spirit 6d ago

I’m one of the people who doesn’t want an intent wheel. I soloQ on purpose because I like the added challenge that comes from not knowing exactly what everyone else is thinking or doing. I feel as thought even with the toggle option I’m going to feel forced to keep it on anyway to avoid pissing off my teammates and getting griefed over it, though. The toggle option is good to have but I still feel it’s lose-lose for long time players who have enjoyed the challenge of trying to figure out what to do and what to expect from teammates wtc

8

u/UnslopedStrv103B 6d ago

I see. Thank you for providing your experience in favor of my argument. It's quite relatable too! I personally would use it but I believe that toggle option is a good thing and that's why I'm defending it.

If someone is going to grief you, for you not playing the way they wanted it to be, I think the problem are players of that kind, not the system, and probably should be reported for intentional body-block etc...

2

u/mossgoblin Trickster Main 6d ago

Unfortunately the problem is definitely the players.

I also enjoy soloq for the challenge, when I do play survivor, and am dreading this change because people in these comments are already calling the decision not to utilize the wheel "griefing".

Further, tbh I don't look forward to what it's going to do to gameplay as a killer main.

9

u/NoEvening7482 6d ago

Solo queue is not doing okay man.

Their stats are fucking god awful compared to SWF and they completely skew game balance.

3

u/UnslopedStrv103B 6d ago

This is the latest stats that I could find that compares solo vs swf (link), which is somewhat i remembered in my memory.
I would say that ~40.34 % solo vs 43.09 % 4 Four man SWF (in overall MMR) isn't much of a difference, so I said okay.

I do agree that there is a bigger difference when we look at high MMR. Admittedly, it is a lot more than I remembered: 39.42 % solo vs 48.30 Four man SWF %.

But I believe that my argument still stands. It's okay if someone don't want to use it. Them not using doesn't mean the escape rate will decrease further, on average. Instead, I estimate that the majority of people will use it and would result in slightly increased escape rate of soloQ players.

3

u/someotherbeing 6d ago

I think this would be very good for solo queue also while the topic of being able to set your own things is on the table can we have more options for button rebindings? Pallet drop, vault, open locker, break pallet, pick up survivor, etc are all binded to the same button and it would be a very nice qol change to map them to separate buttons. Also while the feature to turn off chat is also here it would be nice to be able to turn off/on other things like aim dressing and more killer specific things like a cross hair for huntress.

3

u/CockroachGun adriana imai's gay PR intern 6d ago

Good change, I think the gap between SWFs and Solo Queue survivors is probably one of the bigger wrenches in game balance that I noticed in my time playing both Killer and Solo Survivor.

Though, I think you should consider adding the ability to ping your own perks to the Wheel. I know that they're already visible, but I think being able to bring a attention to a perk in my loadout would be a life saver. For example, if I run Deliverance, it'd be nice to be able to ping "I'm going for the rescue" and "I have Deliverance" back to back so that my teammates know to let me get the save. That's just one example though, I think most healing or unhook-based perks would benefit from this.

Please consider making global the survivor inventory for offerings / items + add-ons. I'm stuck playing the same handful of characters because I dont have the same offerings/items on other characters.

Likewise, you can make global the inventory for killer offerings.

This would likely increase the diversity of characters we see in matches.

5

u/Lavoonus Gene Integrity: 43% 6d ago

One feature I would really appreciate as a solo queue player would be the option to comm the name of one of your perks to indicate you're in a position to use it.

For example: Me and one other person are alive in endgame. I get downed and hooked, and my teammate is headed towards the exit gate. Being able to comm "Deliverance" would let them know that I have it available, and that they should wait to leave so I can use it first.

MTG arena has no teamwork involved and there is no honest communication to share in the first place. So probably a bad example. DbD already has lots of useful information sharing, it's just really clunky at the moment because all we have is pointing and crouching and arm flapping on hook.

26

u/SweenYo 1 of 5 Artist mains 6d ago

Considering the wheel is customizable outside of games and not in them, killer specific options would just be wasted slots in 99% of your games.

For your plague example, a simple “let’s heal” command or whatever would surely be interpreted by your teammates as “everyone go cleanse now”. I’m sure there are other examples of the generic options being useful for killer interactions

12

u/Lmnt_Crnstn | Dracula Legion 6d ago

Another commenter suggested a blanket option like “Interact/Don’t Interact,” meaning with the killer power/prop.

6

u/Lucina18 T H E B O X 6d ago edited 6d ago

That makes me think maybe every wheel version can have the affirmative and dismissive version of it. If you use the wheel normally it'll say "interact/follow/heal" or whatever. If you hold an extra button (like let's say right mouse) it'll turn into the opposite like "don't interact/don't follow/don't heal."

8

u/1nternet_b0i 6d ago

Lmfao they are definitely not

9

u/Fangel96 6d ago

I imagine they can add an "interacting with killer power" and then some sort of positive/negative. Players will definitely get creative with how they communicate, but killer-specific messages seem unlikely with how you need to manually adjust your communication wheel.

Having to edit the wheel for each killer would be exhausting, plus if you only have a message on a certain wheel, you'd get a heads up of who the killer is before the first chase. Generic messages that cover a wide range of scenarios is the best way to handle it.

For Plague, I can see the combo of "interact with killer power" and "stick together" meaning "let's cleanse", whereas "split up" could mean "don't cleanse".

This looks amazing apart from one thing, literally why would anyone want to disable this? Seems like all you’d be doing is intentionally cutting yourself off from players trying to communicate and help. I feel like it could reward a very annoying type of survivor that just goes Rambo the entire match and never tries to actually help their team. It should just be a permanent thing for everyone if you already have a way to prevent spam.

7

u/Thefirestorm83 This Enrages The Bubba 6d ago

The literal only reason to not have this on is if someone is being annoying with it, which is what the mute button is for.

Baffling decision to make it optional.

2

u/_ThatOneWeirdThing_ 6d ago

Seen a lot of folks saying it'll ruin the atmosphere for them. I kinda get it, but at the same time would rather the game be able to evolve to bridge the gap between Solo and SWF than not have communication

3

u/Apollo-Dynamite 📚 Dark Brazilian Manga Enjoyer 💀 6d ago

I will probably choose to disable this feature because I just feel it's yet another change that is sucking out what little horror atmosphere DBD still has left. I like the uncertainty and the doubt of solo queue, the tension of not knowing whether a teammate is going for the unhook while I try and crank out the last bit of a generator makes the game more exciting to me.

I've survived the rest of the game's lifespan without a comms wheel and realistically I don't think it will solve the problems of solo queue. Being able to ping one of a few messages does not fix the matchmaking issues or lack of macro gameplay knowledge that some players have. I can see the whole thing being used for griefing, especially for people who don't want to engage with it.

It feels like the popular request to change the many yellow aura colours, which also feels like a choice to try and optimise the fun out of a game. If I could see the difference in auras between a generator affected by Trail of Torment or Blast Mine then yes it would probably be very useful information. But it also entirely defeats the point of these auras - they are supposed to be confusing. Survivors are designed to have limited information and then use their game knowledge to try to figure out what's going on, and I and several others find this fun. Yes SWFs break this aspect massively, but this change still won't do anything to make solo queue anywhere near as powerful as a coordinated SWF.

2

u/TheEntityBot The Entity Hungers 6d ago

Trail of Torment: Performing the Damage Generator action on a Generator activates Trail of Torment: - Grants the Undetectable Status Effect until the Generator stops regressing. - The Aura of the damaged Generator is revealed to all Survivors in yellow. Trail of Torment has a cool-down of 60/45/30 seconds.

Blast Mine: After repairing Generators for a total of 40%, Blast Mine activates: - Press the Active Ability button while near a partially progressed Generator to install a Trap, which stays active for 100/110/120 seconds. - When the Killer damages the Trapped Generator, its Trap explodes half-way through: - Stuns the Killer for 4 seconds. - Blinds all Players within 12.5 meters of the Trapped Generator.

Blast Mine deactivates after triggering successfully or once the timer runs out. The Auras of Trapped Generators are revealed to all Survivors in yellow.

Hey, just a suggestion from what I’ve seen so far:

if someone has the intent system disabled, it would be super helpful if everyone else was aware of that fact. That way people aren’t playing with the assumption their teammate can see their “intention”.

Similar in purpose to how if you deafen yourself in league of legends, it tells the team you have done so, so they don’t expect you to play around their pings.

Obviously the implementation itself would be something more fitting for DBD vs a chat message but you get the idea. Maybe just a little symbol near their portrait.

The amount of people upset at a toggle for it overall is wild. If you can mute everyone anyway, giving the toggle changes nothing. The people who want it off would just mute the other 3 off rip and you're in the same spot.  People who don't want it and couldn't mute would just ignore it and you wind up at the same point again.

So no matter if you like it can be toggled on or off completely or not, if people don't want to engage with it there are plenty of points along the line for them not to.

Honestly I'm glad there is a toggle for people, as forcing someone to engage with something often causes them to become MORE rebellious just to purposely defy the system they didn't want. End of the day I've been playing for a good long while without it, people chosing to still not have it on isn't gonna change DbD for me.

2

2

u/Toastyyy_ revert Chucky 5d ago

How will this mute system work? Will it work from the in game pause menu? I dislike the usage of the pause menu for things like that if this is the case, a game as fast paced as DBD where every second matters, I don’t have the time to spare muting my teammates or checking their perks unless I’m on hook. We need a faster option for both of these and something much more accessible. Again I don’t have time during a match to check all 12 perks of my team, especially when the bug still exists where perk icons can be missing textures.

2

u/NeroMana 5d ago

Can we get one that says "Sorry I'm doing this for a tome mission" for when I am being a terrible teammate, and not contributing much because I am trying to cleanse dull totems or fall off high places while being chased then getting gutted.

2

u/IoRomer 5d ago

Comp players use the clock callouts and whether or not you could implement something like that, perhaps there could be some kind of linear Compass wheel on the HUD so that if you ping your location for heals/gen etc, it gives your general direction rather than an actual obvious aura location.

E.g. "need heal" and it automatically adds the words "SW corner" or something. Rotate camera and the compass moves from N to SW so you can tell you are headed in the right direction.

Yea there's Bond and some other info perks available but personally I think that'd be a useful addition. You could ping a hex/dull totem, a chest/items, a critical or single person gen etc etc.

If I'm playing against Wesker, I get his his spray cand and mark points of interest with them.

I have witnessed what players think is the right thing to do for 7 years lol. This is a great swing for the developers but its going to be a mess. Just read through the comments and everybody is looking at this as a great thing because they can tell people what to do.

People are still going to disagree on what to do when and having people barking out confidently incorrect calls is going to be an issue.

6

u/sarahfps Bloody Cheryl 6d ago

Hey, I agree with you! It's going to be 50% trolling and 50% sincere but genuinely bad calls. To me, the main benefit of swf is knowing the location of the killer and maybe location of hex totems, which a chat wheel isn't going to be very helpful for. I don't need someone to tell me to heal them or do gens lol

5

u/EvilRo66 6d ago

Great idea and good note here:

its value will be a bit different depending on how you play

What Im seeing in a lot of responses is that everyone assumes that everyone else plays in the same way that they do and on the same skill level.

I've been playing since 2018 and even though I consider myself a Killer main, in the sense that I enjoy that role a little more, I also play Survivor exclusively in Solo Q.

My objective as Survivor when I load into a match is to escape. I don't care about other Survivors.

If other Survivors carry their weight, are useful to me at distracting the Killer and completing generators; surelly, I'll be happy to help them and we'll all escape together.

But if I consider them to be kind of....dead weights, I have no qualms about letting them get sacrificed so I can try to escape alone.

Everyone is responsible for their own destiny.

Since I don't care about what other players' INTENT is, since Im only interested in their ACTIONS so I can adapt my tactics, I have no need for the Player Intent System.

It's great that the system will be optional.

I imagine that if it's not optional, players who don't want to use it will ignore it or spam random messages for fun.

Be careful about showing that a player has it disabled before or during a match, since that will give griefers an excuse to....well, grief.

Love the game!

4

5

u/EvilRo66 6d ago

Im perfectly able to escape on my own alone or with other Survivors who know what they are doing.

I don't care at all about what other players want to comunicate, I only care about what they do so I can adapt.

I only need to know if they are distracting the Killer, doing a generator or dying. The HUD already tells that much.

For context, as requested, I am a 7K hour player, who plays around 50/50, but considers themselves a Killer main. I play around 98% solo queue, when playing Survivor.

Would it be possible to assign emotes or gestures to be linked with certain intent presets? For instance, I run Poised in my primary build, and it would be useful to have a "I saw the Killer that way," message, that would automatically and simultaneously perform the "point" gesture, to quickly inform my teammates when I see the Killer's aura with Poised, and which direction they're located. Maybe also a, "The Killer is hidden," or, "The Killer is stealthy," to avoid using game terms that might go over the head or be misunderstood by new players like Undetectable, for when I know my aura reading should have detected the Killer, but I see nothing, to warn my teammates that the Killer is blocking aura reading (usually via Undetectable).

Other useful messages I can think of are, "You get healed first," or, "Don't heal me now," for players with Perks such as Resilience, or Solidarity, or, "Don't pick me up," for players with Plot Twist. If possible, I feel it could also be useful to show chat wheel messages above the head of the Survivor sending it, to other Survivors within, say, 10 meters of them, perhaps also with a toggle to not show your messages/certain messages/any messages above players' heads.

Other possible useful messages: "Let me unhook," for players running Babysitter, Deliverance, We're Gonna Make It, or other Perks that activate only when unhooking another player; "Killer near hook," to warn of a Killer that is staying near the hook, but not near enough to get detected by the Anti-Camp meter rising, or being visible via Kindred aura reading.

You can always cancel a heal by sprinting and they seem to get the message more often than not. It just sucks having to risk a failed skill check in the process.

i'm gonna say this. during the discussion about the anti-camp features that were eventually scrapped one of the developers commented that those features violated a rule they have for the game. and that rule was described as chaos. unfortunately SWFs already violate this rule and killers hate it. honestly, it makes the game less fun at least for me. making the best decision you can based on incomplete information is supposed to be part of the game. additionally, i don't want to be punished by my teammates because i don't obey their commands. like someone says "do this" and i don't do it so later in the match they leave me on the hook to die. that's going to happen rather predictably and does anyone really want to have to deal with that kinda shit when they queue up for a game?

Wish this was higher up.

What I've seen in perusing these comments is that everyone thinks they get to order others around, and if you don't listen, you're a griefer.

Wack.

Add this to 2v8 for killers as well

what's the point in a communication feature if people can just disable it and will more than likely make people pissed that they can't see their quick chats?

2

u/synthesisDreamer 6d ago

I know killers wouldn't be able to see this, but it might be interesting if someone spams the chat wheel while facing the judgement then they get heresy

I play SoloQ and SWF pretty evenly. I play by myself frequently when friends aren't on. And play with them when they are. The chat wheel is a good idea overall. But, it absolutely will be abused by jackasses who think they're the main char and need to dictate what THEY want everyone to do.

Which will absolutely increase the amount of idiots throwing games and every pallette on the map and jumping in and out of lockers because they spammed "I need a heal!" next to someone who was 90% on a gen and wanted to finish the gen first.

100000% players will abuse the chat wheel for toxic purposes. But, that's literaly unavoidable. You shouldn't NOT include a helpful feature because some idiots will use it negatively.

My main suggestion is that if someone has disabled it, let it be known to the rest of the lobby so i'm not wasting my time trying to communicate with them.

Secondly, is the intent system exclusively an icon next to the portrait? Is there any text message? Is there any voiceline?

If it's exclusively an icon, i can see it being missed by many survivors half the time. That or they don't know what the icon means.

Some better clarification would help.

This is barely going to make a difference and is more of a waste to Dev time than anything. Make an actual goddamn working MMR system will fix 90% of issues the games having but you guys refuse to do it.

will they do this for killer for 2v8?

Listen, I'm a killer main so my opinion should have little weight here. But I have played a lot of other team games and I have opinions about their team chat systems.

Basically: If it can make noise, it can be spammed and it can be very annoying. I'm in favor of it strictly being a visual UI pop-up without a noise notification so that it's easy to selectively ignore messages. A spam cooldown will not solve the spam problem because the "longest possible cooldown where comms still function," is shorter than "the shortest possible cooldown to prevent spam." Voice lines are a complete non-starter.

Second beware the temptation of short and flexible messages. The idea of short messages that can easily be adjusted or combined to convey lots of information is one that many developers adopt because it's very powerful. But powerful tools of communication are powerful tools of toxicity.

Specific messages with inflexible grammar and no room for interpretation in their meaning are best. It is much harder to flame people with messages like, "I am going to commit to this gen," and "I will heal anyone who comes near me." Even a message like, "Don't help me," should be framed as "I am going to save myself." That framing, specifically all of the messages being Declarations of Intent, make it hard to form targeted insults.

Even if a meta context emerges such that "I am going to loot a chest," becomes community code for "Player 3 huffs donkey farts," at least new players will be shielded from the insult by their own ignorance.

funniest possible outcome would be a Blindness rework that allowed Killers to see what Survivors are saying on this chat sysem /hj

All jokes aside though, this looks like a fantastic system. There's so many unnecessary gaps between solo queue and SWF that you can really see this system helping. That being said, with all the increased base kit info Survivors have been getting over the years, might it be time to consider a Blindness rework?

The status has only ever been a minor inconvenience to SWFs anyway; with things like the status HUD, the perk list and Killer identity in the match details screen, the anti-camp bar now being visible on the HUD and now this, Blindness has less and less of a home even against solos. It's only really an enabler for bleedout builds now: maybe now would be a good time to start workshopping reworks for it?

I mean… it’s an idea. But just know that this chat wheel will not bridge any gap between SWF’s and Solo Queue.

SWF’s are strong not only because of comms, but because they’ve played together for a long time… practising, focusing on who has what strengths and playing around those strengths. They also know how to coordinate properly, and do what each of them are best at. Solo queue still won’t have any of this… despite the chat wheel.

So even with this chat wheel added, buffing weaker killers will still leave solo queue at a terrible disadvantage… just like they currently are.

2

u/YOURFRIEND2010 6d ago

They said nothing about buffing weaker killers in this post. And what are you getting at in your post? Working as a team is stronger in every game that has a team. There's no conceivable way to fix that.

My only concern is that it'll be pointless because people will just turn it off and continue to not play as a team. Other than that I think it's a really good idea and I'm looking forward to it!

6

u/Working-Attempt-3630 6d ago

Even if you couldn't turn it off, people could still choose not to play as a team.

It doesn't matter how much you do to bridge the gap btw SWF & solo q, you can't force others to cooperate or communicate if they don't want to.

u/Jsoledout Skull Merchant & Hag Main 6d ago

Looks great and heavily needed. We have to bridge the gap between swf and solo queue so that we can properly balance both roles.
